8th / 9th May – NEWS – 8th / 9th May NEWS – IMPORTANT ACTION NEEDED IMMEDIATELY
In yesterday`s news on NOVA TV, Croatia, the Mayor of Benkovac said that the authorities will decide about the fate of the dogs (and the cat and rabbit) at the shelter in next few days.
These dogs are not vaccinated and marked, but they are not guilty of how they have ended up, because Republic Municipality Budget – the same as in Serbia- MUST PAY BY LAW for this vaccination and microchiping- not Mr. Ozakovic.
PLEASE, please , contact the Mayor and the others in authority.
We MUST keep sending e mails in about this; the way these animals are bing treated is unacceptable.
On 8th May SAV campaigners were sent a letter written by the Mayor. A copy is given below.
The letter declares (exactly as writtem – SAV change of Low to Law in one place:
“Two years ago City of Benkovac has constituted shelter for abandon animals because it was necessary on our territory. After that animals are accommodated according the Low (Law) and City of Benkovac give financial help to the shelter”.
“Linked to protests of animal organisations in which is aimed that City of Benkovac intend to euthanasia the dogs from the shelter. We claim for sure that no euthanasia there was not and there will not be”.
9th May – Drama continues today at the Benkovac shelter. Who knows what will happen in the end. There were 83 dogs at the shelter but now there are around 50.
Mr. Ozakovic is desperate because the authorities still ban him from the shelter, and the padlocks have been changed. he has tried to see how many dogs are still at the shelter but he is unable to do any accurate count.
Further, SAV have learned that the authorities purchased some dry dog food sacks on the 14th JANUARY for 83 dogs, one cat and one rabbit. The authorities have have not paid for any veterinary intervention and the dogs have not been microchipped or vaccinated. SAV understand from very reliable sources that during the last three years, the authorities have purchased food for the shelter animals just 3 times – each time being 20 sacks of dry food.
If the food was last purchased in January, do the authorities really tyhink that 20 sacks of dry food is enough to feed 83 dogs until now at least – May !!
The Mayor declares in his letter that they are giving financial help to the shelter; SAV say that 20 sacks of food for 83 dogs over the period January to May is not enough; very much not enough. SAV declare that the authorities are contributing the absolute minimum towards the upkeep of the dogs at the shelter, whilst writing to everyone to say they are giving financial help.
The authorities way of dealing with the dogs at the shelter is to kill them; if not, what has happened to the 23 dogs (83-50=23) which do not appear to be at the shelter ?
This appears to be a crime aimed at the animals at the shelter. They are given inadequate amounts of food by the authorities, they are provided with no veterinary treatment and now they are allegedly being padlocked in the compound awaiting death, while the man who could try to help them in some way (Mr. Ozakovic) has been locked out of the shelter !
The Veterinary Inspectors have not done their job; they also entered the shelter during the absence of Mr. Ozakovic; and they have now padlocked him out of his shelter.
This situation cannot remain as it is – we are fed up with being lied to by the mayor and the authorities – action is required now; please act by sending the following letter:
*** SAMPLE LETTER *** – Based on one provided by Maria in Belgium.

Honourable Ladies and Gentlemen,
We all know that Croatia is eager to join the European Union… We all know that tourism is a notable source of income during the summer for Dalmatia…
Nevertheless, in spite of the international uproar the killings, ordered by the BENKOVAC authorities (Zadar County), at the non-kill dog-shelter provoke, the responsible Croatian authorities don’t seem to care.
They did not take action to prevent Mayor MIRKO ERSTIC and his shinter-gang to go and kill several dogs.
Honourable Ladies and Gentlemen, just in case you shouldn’t be aware: in Europe we don’t appreciate animal-haters. The Benkovac-shelter case is another proof of backward, psychopath BALKAN behaviour towards dogs, cats and other animals: no respect or compassion for the innocents whatever.
Do you know what ridiculous pretext the Benkovac authorities used for murdering the defenceless dogs? ‘They were fighting’!
Let’s suppose this was true – which we seriously doubt – , if we follow this logic, Mr. Mayor could proceed to the killing of half of the Benkovac citizens. They are fighting each other all the time: yes, we did some research on the internet…
In the meantime, the shelter has been padlocked, leaving the remaining animals without care, preventing the caregiver/owner to enter. What for????? So the dirty killing job can be done without witnesses?
Honourable Ladies and Gentlemen, may we ask you once more to take IMMEDIATE action to stop this madness? The Benkovac killings are already seriously tarnishing the image of Croatia.
Please, save the lives of the remaining animals! Stop the cruelty!
Call the Benkovac Mayor to order. MOST URGENT!
In addition; The veterinary inspectors entered the shelter during the absence of the owner, Mr. Dinko Ozakovic.
Reminder: trespassing is unlawful in all Democratic countries, including the EU. Now the EU parliamentarians will be informed of the actions within Croatia.
