Mickey Rourke to Build Animal Shelter in Romania

By Lisa Spector

The stray dogs of Romania have been a problem since the 1980′s. Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu banned Romanian citizens from having pets. It didn’t take long for unneutered homeless dogs to create an epidemic that has turned into 50,000 dogs living on the streets of Romania. Some starve to death, others freeze, and all would benefit from human companionship, a warm bed, and dog food.

In November of 2011, the Romanian government passed a law that made it legal for any homeless animal to be euthanized. Care2 members, known for their passion for animals, started a petition asking the government to educate the public on the benefits of spaying and neutering instead of killing innocent dogs.

On January 31, 2012 the Romanian court declared the euthanizing of stray dogs as unconstitutional. While animal rights activists were pleased with that turn of events, they have still be wanting to help all of the stray animals.

As luck would have it, Mickey Rourke, a huge dog lover with a pension for helping dogs in need, was in the country filming “Dead in Tombstone” when a stray dog walked onto the set. He decided to adopt the dog and donate $250,000 of his own money to build a shelter the size of a football field for the strays.

When accepting his Golden Globe award in 2009, Rourke thanked his current and deceased dogs. He has also been quoted as saying, “I truly believe God created dogs for a cause. They are the greatest companions a man could ever have.” It’s so heartwarming to remember that one person can truly make a difference.

Although I don’t have Rourke’s pocketbook to fund a shelter, I do what I can to help homeless dogs by donating music that is clinically demonstrated to calm the canine nervous system to shelters and rescue organizations. Dogs in 1,500 shelters in the U.S. and abroad are being calmed to my piano playing on the Through a Dog’s Ear recordings. It’s helping create a quieter shelter environment, which encourages visitors to stay longer, and consequently adoption rates increase. While the music won’t solve the homeless canine problem in Romania, it will hopefully help the dogs move quickly from the shelter environment into their forever homes.

Watch how the dogs in the Santa Fe Animal Shelter respond to the music. Even though I don’t know how to say sit or stay in Romanian, music is a universal language, and I hope music can be a part of Mickey Rourke’s new shelter in Romania.

Croatia: Sibenik is a Town in South. Croatia – The Communal Dog Kill Shelter Is Now Full – Animals are At Risk of Death.

Dear All,

I’ve had this from Colleagues in Austria today.

Sibenik is a town in Sth. Croatiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0ibenik

And it has a communal kill shelter, which is full now.

The dogs presented below are in acute danger of being killed, very soon.

The German page to this call for help is this

http://notfallhunde.blogspot.de/2012/02/niemand-hort-ihr-bellen-sibenik-die.html

Please, if you can assist, do – with a new home, with a foster home, even financial help (details below). These are wonderful animals who do not deserve to die.

I know – we see this every day, and no animal like this ever deserves to die. They are all priceless creatures. Unique and precious, every one of them …

I beg you, if you can help them, or at least a few of them, it would mean the world.

Please contact either perugia09@gmx.de  or me – I will translate, of course.

Please also pass on to anyone who might be able to assist.

Thank you so much!

Diana

Hi all

Diference – distinction between euthanasia and “euthanasia“ is in these 3 :
– a way
– a present/absent indication
– a present/absent Wish to die by person whose life is on the table ,
by a person who be euthanized or killed .
All 3 must be `pozitive` or there is not euthanasia, but killing by any way.
Please help these poor dogs, and push authorities of Croatia for doing a new regulation in agreement to The Written Declaration on dog population management in EU-13.10.2011., by putting down 60 days dead rows ( or any other limitation), and by doing that : responsible ownership be a way of control of dog/cat population .Thanks.

Serbia: 16/12/11. Latest News and Pictures From Cat Shelter ‘Felix’, Belgrade. Can You Help the Cats This Christmas ?

Website:   http://novisadcats.blogspot.com/

A Christmas message from Danica Mirkovic, President of Felinologic Association Felix and the owner of Cat Shelter Felix.

Please try and make a special effort this month by either giving a donation or by an adoption of one or more of the cats – full details below.

Danica has kindly sent us some latest photos of the cats at Shelter Felix; enjoy them.

The message from Danica is as follows:

Felix cats need your help! There are several ways to support almost 100 kitties from a private, no-kill, cage-free cat shelter in Serbia. Make a difference today!

If you care about Felix kitties, please consider donating as much as you can. The situation is difficult right now. Gas bills are mounting although the real cold weather hasn’t even begun.  Last year, I took a loan to pay for the heating system and when it was finished I thought that my kitties’ health problems were over. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a solid fuel storage and the fuel itself was nowhere to be bought. I couldn’t keep the fire going all night, more than 30 cats were sick and the most sensitive ones didn’t survive. It was necessary to install gas heating system which is much more efficient but it is not paid off yet.

Every cat lover knows cats are heat – seekers. Most of my kitties barely go outside these days, they all prefer to sit on radiators. Their rooms are comfortable and cozy and seeing them enjoying their time makes my heart sing. And I hope you can recognize this feeling, because I cannot cover all expenses without help of caring, benevolent people like you.

Winter is very harsh here, with lots of strong, icy cold and bitter winds. The outside night temperature was -13° C already and I fear that the worst is yet to come. I remember that last year’s lowest temperature reached 27° degrees below zero. Considering that I have almost 15 chronically ill kitties, and 25 older than 15 years, it’s essential to keep them warm. Please, help my kitties make it through the cold months. We can’t let them down now, can we?

Me and my kitties have always been grateful for your unselfish support and are now, more than ever. Every donation counts! If you decide to help us, please use the PayPal button on my blog: http://novisadcats.blogspot.com/

If you’d rather virtually adopt one (or more) of Felix kitties, you can find their photos in my albums Cats for virtual adoption on my care2 and FB profiles. All Felix cats need nutritious food and quality medical care. For 30 $ per month you can sponsor a kitty you choose (each cat can have multiple sponsors) and I’ll send you all the information about and photos of “your” kitty on a regular basis. When you sponsor a cat, your donations are used to help all cats in my care.

You can also buy those beautiful flairs to support my kitties.

The message from Danica is as follows:

Hello, Mark,

Winter is  almost here and it’s getting harder and harder every day. Old cats and chronically ill ones are most delicate, I wonder if they’ll survive till spring. Many kitties are sick right now and the money is running down low…

Winter is approaching fast, it is getting colder and colder every day and this chilly, wet weather affects almost all of my kitties so they are getting sick more often. Especially sensitive are the oldest cats, the chronic patients, and the new kitties that arrived this year and are not yet fully adapted to the life in the shelter. A virus is making rounds, causing fever, sneezing and discharge from the eyes. Older cats are not eating well and are lethargic – I honestly hope they can survive till spring. The fact that some of them are over 15 years old makes me even more preoccupied. One of my chronically ill kitties with FUS is in crisis again, like last year when he barely made it through the cold months. Many recently arrived kitties are already under treatment.  With every new day new problems appear and it’s hard and  exhausting for me but I won’t let my kitties down. Every kind of help is greatly appreciated and more than welcome.

Last winter was harsh, the shelter was snowed in and heating did not work. This year, the heat is on, but the number of cats is much greater and it will not be easy – there is a lot of work and a lot of worry again. I must admit I’m getting tired, but for the sake of my kitties I have to carry on fighting…

My kindest regards

Danica Mirkovic

Uk (England): FRIEND Farm Animal Shelter – Kent; Home of SAV.

http://www.friendsanimalrescue.org.uk/

F.R.I.E.N.D. was established in the early 90’s to give a permanent home to abused, unwanted and orphaned farmed animals, so they can live peacefully for the rest of their lives. We currently look after about 150 animals. Pigs, cows, geese, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, dogs, cats, ferrets and a horse are enjoying as natural a life as we can offer, given that we live in the heart of the Kent countryside, and they are permitted to run freely and communally over the 10 acre site.

Original Message:

Will you please inform me is there any way I can post on your site?

My name is Danica Mirkovic and I run ‘Felix’ Cat Shelter in Serbia. ‘

When Etela’s shelter in Backa Topola, Serbia,  was destroyed by the fire, I took more than 20 of her cats and they’re with me still. I’d like to post some information about them (with recent photos) and the rest of my cats (I have about 100 of them right now) and to ask for help.

It’s almost impossible for one person to defray all their expenses. I didn’t mean to make a site, just to log in here, but evidently this is not how it works.

 I do have a blog, though: http://novisadcats.blogspot.com/

I hope that you’ll contact me soon. My best regards, Danica Mirkovic
