Message: Thank you for reporting on Mercy For Animals’ undercover investigation into animal abuse at an illegal backyard slaughter facility.

I am writing to notify you of an update in the case. Roberto Celedon, who illegally butchered animals in his backyard, pleaded guilty to one felony and one misdemeanor through a plea agreement, and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Yesterday (June 26, 2012), he began his sentence. In addition to jail time, Celedon received 5 years’ probation.

He must pay nearly $4,000 in fines and attend 48 animal cruelty classes.

Celedon is prohibited from possessing or owning animals, operating a meat-producing facility, attending auctions where animals are sold, and selling meat products.

I hope that you have a great day.

SAV Comment:

News like this means we will have a great day ! – a prosecution like this shows so much why the US  ‘Ag Gag’ legislation needs to be scrapped.

** Danica’s message to us is as follows:

Hello, Mark,

I just wanted to share some news with you.

Believe it or not, I have 12 new kitties, including that poor mother cat and her babies!

All of them arrived from Belgrade. My new kitties are Giuseppe (a grown up male dumped on the street, well rounded and neutered), Klea (rescued from some concrete backyard where a pack of dogs was killing cats on a regular basis, she is a blue-eyed white female), Alethe and her newborn kittens, five of them (she gave birth in a pizzeria) little Kami (a tortie kitten) and three siblings Edan, Ivor and Arrow (their owner didn’t want them anymore).

Alethe’s babies are doing well and getting bigger every day. Kami, Edan, Ivor and Arrow are kept indoors while all the other kitties are in my backyard, enjoying the summer.

Roofing repairs will start this weekend; wish us luck!

There’s always a lot going on here…

Warm regards

Danica

Building materials arrive and the work starts !

India: Excellent News ! – 120-Year-Old Tradition of Animal Sacrifice Ends After 12 Year Battle.

120-Year-Old Tradition of Animal Sacrifice Ends After 12 Year Battle

Bijaya Kumar Kabi of Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA)

Every year, Rajo Sankranti (a mass festival in Odisha, India) is a feast day for the villagers of Srirampur and its neighboring villages under the Pattamundai police limit, where hundreds of animals are killed for the Deity Maa Ramchandi, Srirampur.

The Deity’s temple is situated on the campus of a school with 428 students who bear witness annually to hundreds of animals being killed by s slaughterer (ghatak).

The innocent kids, ranging from 5 to 13 years old, are shocked by the event every year. Thanks to Jilla Pashubali Pratirodha Mancha, there was a district level forum for the prevention of animal sacrifice and the animal welfare organization Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA).

Jointly we have been campaigning for abolition of this heinous superstitious tradition for the last decade. Fortunately this year, just a few days ago, the animal sacrifices were completely stopped.

Education is a critical part of any animal welfare reform initiative.

Police arrested one slaughterer named Chaitany Rana of nearby village Damarpur and our volunteers along with some village youth started an awareness campaign, distributing leaflets and picketing in front of the temple. Together we brought 120 years of tradition to a close.

We would like to thank the district administration, local tahasildar Mr.Pabitramohan Dash, IIC police station pattamundai Mr. Amitav Mohapatra and the village youth for their timely cooperation. Last year more than 320 animals were sacrificed in that place, and now the bloodshed has ended.

Brought to you by the Harmony Fund international animal rescue squads.

Chile: 500,000 Pigs Left To Starve – Then To Be Slaughtered ! – Take Action Now – Petition Link Included.

Petition Link – please sign and crosspost to all your contacts:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/482/965/395/save-500000-starving-pigs-abandoned-in-chile/

Hi Mark,

Residents of Freirina, Chile have been rioting against the unbearable stench emanating from Agrosuper, one of the largest pig farms in the world. In the interest of their own safety, Agrosuper workers fled the plant, abandoning 500,000 pigs to starve.

Many of these pigs have died as a result of limited food and water access. »

The waste of the unattended pigs also poses a human health problem, as it seeps into local community water supplies.

Rather than finding alternate care for the pigs, Agrosuper plans to have all of them slaughteredThis is a complete waste of life.

These pigs should not have to starve nor be senselessly slaughtered to pay for the company’s mistakes. Urge Chilean leaders to immediately provide food, water and care for the pigs and take action to minimize environmental dangers resulting from the plant’s disaster so that this never happens again. »

Thanks for taking action!

Kathleen
