This weary traveller has walked a lot, hungry, thirsty and very sick.

DECEMBER 2016 PETITION – Please Support Thank You.
https://www.change.org/p/nicolae-barbu-bitte-verhindern-sie-die-euthanasie-von-hunden-im-tierheim-giurgiu-rum%C3%A4nien
Petition in deutsch, english, romana
https://www.change.org/p/nicolae-barbu-bitte-verhindern-sie-die-euthanasie-von-hunden-im-tierheim-giurgiu-rum%C3%A4nien
To Mr. Barbu, Mayor of Giurgiu and all the city councils from the PSD
We the signers of this petition challenge you not to begin with the killing of dogs in the Giurgiu public shelter and to continue the co-operation with the German animal protection group DsN.eV to continue caring for the dogs and work towards a sustainable and permanent solution for Giurgiu’s street dog problem.
The contractually regulated co-operation between the Giurgiu town administration and the DsN.eVhas been in effect for 2.5 years. The contract stipulates that among other things the DsN e.V secures the complete supply of food, the standard treatment of dogs (inoculations, chip implants, castration and de-worming). The DsN e.V also contributes to the costs of constructional changes and supplies consumer goods such as washing powder, water bowls and food troughs. In return the town desists in killing the dogs.
This co-operation has been running for 2.5 years. In this time the DsN e.V has invested around €350,000 of donated money in the shelter and the region of Giurgiu. If one takes into account the purchase and extension of the property for our dogs, we have invested a sum in excess of a half a million Euros.
The town has saved this money, and according to the town employee, Mr. George Palalau the shelter has a budget of 20,000 Euros per month. What happens to this budget we can only guess. The wages in the shelter are not high, excrement is not properly disposed of. It is simply tipped into the bushes next to a recreational area. The refuse disposal comes irregularly and rubbish is disposed of in the country. The veterinarian who should be paid by the town for all other treatment, tumour operation, treatment of bite wounds etc has not received payment for several months. We challenge you to use the available money sensibly and sustainably eg for the castration of strays and dogs with owners.
A new shelter construction to west European standards has been promised several times in as many meetings. Use the money for that!
Romania has the duty to set chip implants, registration and castration of the dogs. Please ensure that this is enforced and controlled in Giurgiu, as so often discussed.
Other towns in Romania have understood that only blanket castration can stop the problem effectively. The shelter management under Ms. Isaia and Mr. Palalau is causing the shelter to deteriorate. The cleaning work is unacceptable, there is no pack management practised and death through illness and injury are consciously accepted. Mr. Barbu, you gave your word. No more rounding up of puppies, mothers with puppies or dogs that have already been castrated.
Mr Barbu you have the choice, whether you want to be one of the innumerable communities in Romania who go the seemingly simple way of killing, or if you want to continue with an exemplary project in German-Romanian animal welfare and find a long term sustainable solution for the stray dog problem in Giurgiu.
Other towns and cities in Romania would be happy about investments and the positive image in Europe that goes with it.
Please make the right decision for Giurgiu, for the dogs and for your own conscience.

30/8/16. We are currently deciding g if this section of the site needs a makeover. Much of what you see here is published (maybe in a slightly different form) on the main ‘Home’ page.
Thus, do we need to repeat it all here ?
So at the moment this section of the site is not being updated; although we have not removed anything that has been published up until now. SAV.
———————————————————————————-
This section is given to animal welfare shelters in Serbia and other Balkans states (newly added 12/14 – Soi Dogs Thailand – at end
– Updated 25/1/16) which ask for your help and support.

On the Facebook site you will find many Serbian shelter issues and groups which are not covered on this SAV site; but each of which saves animals and is in dire need of your help and support.
The Facebook page is very much an open forum which is run and contributed to by you, our vast supporter network. Please feel free to contribute anything that you feel could be viewed as useful or supportive by others.
THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF ALL THE ANIMALS

APPEALS, NEWS AND PICTURES
14/4/16 – Kasper Is Very Ill – Latest News.
Lovely Kasper, who was saved from a shelter that burned to the ground in 2011 and has been through hell and back already is seriously ill. He’s had episodes of diarrhea every six months or so for years now and it was as though he had some gastrointestinal disorder, but when his stools have become loose and watery again, for the zillionth time, a UV scan was done and showed Kasper’s real problem is CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). His kidneys are failing and that’s why he’s had diarrhea on and off for ages. He’s currently being fed a specific veterinary therapeutic diet with a restricted protein and phosphate content designed to support kidney function and minimize the complications of CKD.
We’ve ordered Ipakitine, a chitosan-based phosphate binder and uremic reducer from Hungary for him and Sneska, as we can’t find it here in Serbia. At this point, it’s impossible to tell how much time he has left, but we’ll do our best to improve the quality of his life and slow the progression of the disease.
Any help for this sweet kitty boy is more than welcome!

The following message is from Danica at Felix Shelter, Serbia:
All Funds Raised!
Dear friends, We are delighted to inform you that we’re finally able to pay for a new tank of gas which was ordered yesterday!
Thanks to your outstanding support, all of the Felix kitties will have the proper heating over the next two and a half months 🙂
We can hardly find the words to express our most sincere gratitude to the amazing Laura Simpson and her wonderful organization The Great Animal Rescue Chase and Harmony Fund who stepped in again in the very nick of time!
We would also like to thank each and every one of you who found it in your hearts to help us provide our furry little fighters with everything they need!
We are almost ashamed to ask for help over and over again, but with so many helpless creatures which depend on us for food, medical care and a home, we have no other choice and we just can’t do it all on our own.
Dozens of the Felix kitties are either above 15 years old, chronically ill, or generally in delicate health and they’re simply not able to withstand the cold; desperate times call for desperate measures.
May the kindness you’ve so generously bestowed on us come back to you all a thousand-fold!
Thank You again – Danica and the kitties.

19/1/16 – Can you help with funds to vaccinate 28 rescued dogs ?
The Story
We are 4 women from Novi Sad (Serbia) and we try to help abandoned dogs.
In this moment we take care about 28 dogs and several cats and rabbits.
We urgently have to do regular vaccination of all our dogs because their vaccines stand out, and they are close proximity to the dogs who are suffering from distemper.
Some dogs already vaccinated, and we owe to our vet, and the other will be able to vaccinate when we pay.
Please help us to protect them.

The Story from the shelter:
It looks like real winter has begun. After a short period of weird, sunny, spring-like weather, totally atypical for this time of year, the icy cold started to tighten its grip and the outdoor temperatures plummeted far below zero a couple of days ago. We haven’t had any snow yet and no paw prints are visible across the hard and mostly bare ground that’s covered in a layer of frost, but it’s freezing nonetheless. Central heating has been working day and night over the last couple of months to keep the kitties warm as we fortunately still had some heating fuel left from last year’s purchase, but our gas tank is emptying rapidly and right now we have just enough gas for 10 more days. If we fail to raise the funds for a new tank of gas in a flash, we’ll have no choice except to switch to the electric heaters which can’t warm up the house and all of the cats’ rooms sufficiently, not to mention that the electricity bills will be skyrocketing. The costs of cat food and vet care alone are enormous all year round and when you add the cost of heating fuel during the cold season, it’s a complete disaster.
Winter is always hard for a cat sanctuary with a three-digit number of fragile and delicate little furry creatures, many of which are well beyond their golden years and without proper heating
We woke up to a deep freeze on Monday…
What is this wet cold white stuff?
Some cats are having fun in the snow 🙂
Some cats find joy in everything they choose to do…
And we have just enough heating fuel for one more week 😦

We know we should have asked for help earlier as this is the worst possible time for fundraising and we totally understand that most people have wiped out their savings and are struggling to get their finances back on track after the holidays, but we’re dealing with a true emergency and we hope you’ll be able to lend us a helping hand yet again.
Whatever amount you are able to give will be received with heartfelt gratitude, because every donation is literally saving lives!
We are doing everything we can and then some to stay afloat and give each of the Felix kitties a fighting chance to see another spring, but we will be lost if you don’t step in!

1st January 2016.
https://www.youcaring.com/for-our-animals-449539#
Our little sanctuary of animal love needs your help! After many years of witnessing cruelty to animals in Serbia we decided to move to a small village in an old house – where everyone is welcome.
Having a mild heart condition I needed peace – peace with my animals. We lived within our means and everyone was happy. As times passes by, our furry family expanded – many mornings we would wake up and another injured or old dog was left on our door step, then a cage with hamsters, then we got a call if we can take some degui squirrels and chinchillas – we couldn’t say no.
Now our “animal kingdom” consists of: 10 dogs, 5 chinchillas, 2 hamsters, 2 hens, 2 ducks and 5 chicken (that shall be laying eggs when they reach adulthood). – most of them are available for adoption to good homes (except chicken and ducks – I don’t want them to finish in someone’s plate) – lots of animals to feed and we try our very best – but still short of 300E/month (about 400$).
We appreciate any help, including old towels and sheets, fleas/tick treatments but most importantly we need to by food for them.
Any donation is appreciated. You are also very much welcome to visit us – anytime, our doors are always open.
THANK YOU!!

News about costs and how money is spent – https://www.betterplace.org/en/projects/19979-small-shelter-nis-serbia-dog-food-veterinary-care-project/news
We will be using this Project to raise funds to provide food and veterinary care for the dogs and cats at Small Shelter NIS.
We currently have 24 dogs and numerous cats at the shelter and on the streets whom need food daily. We provide vet care to any animal in distress and we also contribute to spaying the animals. Neutering at this time in NIS is still free for male dogs. Our funds are limited and resources stretch so every penny donated is so much gratefully received, we could not continue without your support, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
However we can never be complacent and try to ensure we raise funds ourselves with our wonderful BUY IT NOW page on FB. We have an amazing selection of goods on sale donated by our supporters, why not pay us a visit at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/smallshelternis/ (copy & paste into your browser)
In addition, we have a new expense which is a monthly payment for the use of the land the shelter is on. This fee is 40 euros a month.
We also have had to employ the services of a dog walker, NISA. He is a great help to the Shelter and provides long walks twice weekly (the dogs on rotation) in lovely surroundings not far from the shelter, which also boasts a lovely river if any of the dogs wish to have a SPLASH ! and cool down from the hot summer. This is important to their routine and very much welcomed and also gives them quality time away from the day to day tedious routine at the shelter. This fee is 21 euros every 7 weeks.
Please visit us on our Facebook page where we have daily updates: https://www.facebook.com/SmallShelterInNis?fref=ts (copy & paste into browser) and please feel free to scroll through our photo albums which shows life at the shelter and also where we post all our receipts for food and vet care: https://www.facebook.com/SmallShelterInNis/photos_stream (copy & paste into browser)
Please continue to help this Small Shelter reach their monthly fund raising goals.

June 2015 – Things have reached a very critical situation at shelter ‘Alex’.
If you can help this dog shelter which has been running for years to help animals around the Subotica region, then please do so. It does not matter the size of your donation – anything at all will help with the dailt costs.
Andrea, who is a volunteer at the shelter, sends the following plea for help:
Today, things have escalated in shelter “Alex” to the point where the only person who runs the shelter has no strength to run it anymore and is willing to surrender it to other people. The pressure comes from another which is getting lots of support.
The shelter is full. No matter how hard we try to advertise the shelter, to share our dogs, to introduce other people with the work of the shelter, and publish each donation we receive to be as transparent as possible, simply it doesn’t go. There is no money.
Alex, with kind heart helps the dog, but in vain. Nobody else steps in with a minimum donation or a can of food, or to provide a ride to the vet or provide a temporary home for a dog. Nobody helps. Adrijana and Dragan kill themselves from all the work they do during winter and summer, hot and cold temperatures, rain and sun, while I only maintain the fb page of the shelter.
There are 500 dogs at the shelter.
In shelter “Alex” there are dogs who have been saved going back to 2003 and they are still alive. Everybody is welcomed in the shelter “Alex”. People can come and see the dogs, pet them, take them for a walk.
At this present time things are extremely difficult. Adrijana has helped at the shelter for many years but she is now finding it almost impossible to continue as financial donations are few and far between; yet the animals need to be cared for – veterinary costs, food costs, shelter maintenance costs, etc, etc.
Without Adrijana or more help with donations, the fate of all the animals at the shelter is uncertain. Please somebody help!! – give anything that you can to help, please; we do not know what more we can do than to simply ask people if they can help the shelter with a donation of any size – THANK YOU.
Andrea Sreiber
Volunteer at shelter “Alex”
About the shelter:
It is currently run by a lady named Adriana Nadj; this has been the case since 2010. She acts alone with big help by her boyfriend – that is great, but very difficult.
It was the first ‘no kill’ dog shelter in Serbia, founded in 2003. So this shelter has a long history and was involved with the original formation of SAV in England. As you can see from the following links, the shelter and SAV go back many years. In the earler days the shelter was run by Slavica, who is part of team SAV. When it was operated by Slavica, the shelter was known as ‘EPAR’. Here you can see some early SAV post links to the shelter when it was EPAR:
Things have not been easy for the shelter; in 2010 city officials attempted to gain access to the shelter in order to take the dogs so that they could all be killed.

The shelter has a historically important meaning for Serbia. There have been up to 1000 stray dogs living there in the past; some of which were re-homed and some which died at the shelter by natural death.
There are currently around 500 dogs at the shelter.
The shelter was opened on 18.01.2003.
At the time, Subotica legally permitted euthanasia of dogs and on Fridays, people could bring their dogs to be euthanized for free. The shelter couldn’t allow this, so people from the shelter took those dogs and carried them to the shelter instead. This was the first no-kill shelter in Serbia. Its goal is protection of animals and the environment.
The shelter covers the area of 12000m2 + an additional land of app. 3600m2 next to the shelter which Adrijana received as a gift to expend the shelter.
As both SAV and Serbian campaigners have always spoken out iat length about sterilisation of animals (strays and owned animals); ALL the animals under the care of the shelter have been spayed and neutered.
A large number; approximately 70% of the dogs, are old (some having been under the care of the shelter since 2003/2004). Old dogs often lose control of their legs or suffer from an illness of some internal organ; and so the vets are regularly called on to help – and this costs money all the time.
The shelter does not have sponsors to cover medical costs. It is now looking for donations and / or sponsors to help with daily operating costs.
Small boxes at the shelter contain up to six dogs grouped by personality, to prevent fights. Dogs are also spread across six fields, also grouped by personality, around 10-20 dogs are on the fields. Each field also has a small pond. There are covered boxes, which contain dogs known for attempting to jump over the box walls. The small boxes and the fields require repair of old covers and installation of new covers, to provide shade.
Since it was originally founded, the shelter has helped thousands of dogs, having rescued, adopted and treated them. Dogs will only be adopted out after a mandatory inspection of its potential new home. Adoption is not possible if the owner intends to keep the dog on a chain. Adoption also comes with a mandatory contract. In the case of any dog being found to be in inadequate conditions, the dog is taken back into the shelter. The owner is also permitted to return the dog to the shelter at any time if there are reasons that they cannot continue to have the animal.
The shelter is funded exclusively by donations, which are neither regular or reliable. The City of Subotica currently only provides a free garbage dumpster and provides nothing in the way of financial help, even though the shelter is doing the city a big help by taking dogs from the streets.
The shelter also purchased a van to carry food three times a week from a nearby factory, and the fuel costs vary between 8000 and 10000 RSD. Electricity costs are around 15000 RSD per month. The shelter requires building materials, cleaning supplies, food (granules and canned food, salami, bread, etc), blankets, fleas/ticks
products and money to cover the vet costs, bills, etc.

So, after having hopefully given you an insight into the opertions of te shelter, all we kindly ask is if you would consider giving a donation; no matter how small, to help with the operating costs of the shelter.
Here at SAV, we do not like to keep asking supporters for financial help; but the situation (as you can see) of trying to help around 500 dogs is a very costly one.
Please give anything that you can;
Thank you very much. SAV

Here is just one typical story;
Eli was kept in a city pound on a very short chain – The chain was so short that she couldn’t reach the dog house.
She was rescued, taken to safety and to the vet for a full assessment. It took her some time to recover, but NOW she is a happy and healthy girl. Under the loving care of volunteers, Eli has blossomed in a true golden retriever beauty and she is as lovable as a Goldens can be.
This is what Eli has to say:
” Hi my name is Eli, I’m here with my friends and it is so safe and nice. They are so kind and loving. They say that I am the kindest, most gentle and loving girl EVER!!!
That I am a perfect dog for the perfect family….
Life is beautiful and I love every minute of it.
I love people, other dogs, children, everyone!.
They say that I am pretty close to perfect!“……..
Eli is spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, she has passport – just in case ….
We are looking for a loving home, where Eli is going to be loved forever and ever . Please SHARE

And a link to shelter Alex Subotica;
http://alexsubotica.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/shelter-alex-who-we-are-see-our-photos.html
The shelter was opened on 28/01/2003 during the time when Subotica legally permitted euthanasia of dogs and on Fridays people could bring their dogs to be euthanized for free.
This is the first no-kill shelter in Serbia.
The shelter covers the area of 12000m2 + an additional land next to the shelter (approx. 3600 m2) that still isn’t fenced nor used.
Currently in the shelter there are more than 500 dogs.
Around 70% of the dogs are old (some have been in the shelter since 2003/2004).
http://alexsubotica.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/shelter-alex-who-we-are-see-our-photos.html
There are only 2-4 people taking care of the shelter and its dogs.
The shelter is funded exclusively by donations, which are not regular or reliable.
The shelter requires building materials, cleaning supplies, food (granules and canned food, salami, bread, etc), blankets, fleas/ticks products and money to cover the vet costs, bills, etc.

15/4/15 – Injured cat Ostoje in need of your help
Just when we thought we have all vet bills settled and can focus on Princess’ hernia operation, we received a phone call……
April 9th – Around midnight, on a tip that an injured cat is lying on the entrance of a village Zednik, Subotica, volunteers of shelter “Alex” went to see what is happening. What they discovered was more than shocking.
Young cat was lying helplessly, almost like he already surrendered. We immediately took him. He has wounds on his mouth, hind legs, was in complete state of shock and he didn’t meowed at all. We carefully put him in transporter and tucked him in, ‘cause he was already getting cold.
We called the vet ambulance T&T from Palic because we couldn’t wait until the morning. This way we are expressing our gratefulness to them as they told us to come right away, even though it was around 1a.m.
Cat was fully examined. He has no fractures, but the wounds are horrible. He was named Ostoje and was already in the state of hypothermia.
We warmed him up, his wounds were cleaned, he received an IV, antibiotics, vitamins. From earlier he has diarrhea and the beginning of mange.
Currently he is at our volunteer’s home, tucked in next to the furnace and surrounded with love.
April 10th – Ostoje’s condition is still critical because his temperature varies and he won’t eat by himself. He received therapy which again included IV and antibiotics. He mostly sleeps so his chances are 50/50.
April 11th – Ostoje’s condition is improving. His temperature is now 38.3, he eats on his own, yet he doesn’t want water (probably because he receives enough fluids through IV). He again received therapy and is alert enough to bite and scratch.
You can see his full album here:

We post photos every day and will post more updates along them.
Please help us. Even by sharing.
Shelter “Alex” takes care of 500 dogs while trying to respond to each call and help as many animals as possible.
Unfortunately, we are running out of the funds collected for the care of our dogs in shelter and we fear what we will do then.
Can you please share this appeal and donate whatever amount you can?
No amount is too small and we appreciate it hugely.

22/2/15 – Victor’s story.
Victor was saved in 2008.
On a tip that a dog is in poor condition, that only serves as a guard dog, and that nobody cares for him, volunteers of NGO “Alex” immediately went on the field and took the custody over the dog. They named him Victor.
Horror is a mild word for the poor state the dog was in. Starved and weak, he had a heavy chain around his neck, food and water was nowhere to be seen, and he had a bad skin disease Demodex.
It took a long time for Victor to recover, to learn that he is no longer limited by a meter long chain, that food and water are always available to him, and that every day there is someone who will come and pet him, talk to him with a gentle voice and nice words.
Victor began to flourish. He got better, but kept his position of a housekeeper.
He doesn’t like other dogs and cats, but with people he is simply wonderful. He likes to go for walks and enjoys being in the center of attention.
Victor is now 8 years old.
He hasn’t found a home yet.
Volunteers of “Alex” would give everything if he could go to a family that will love and cuddle him for the rest of his life.
But, if that does not happen, Victor is grateful that he got a second chance in life. We don’t even want to think of the fate that would have awaited him if he had remained with that chain, and in those conditions for one more day or one more month… one more year he would not have survived.
Victor is a dear dog. He acts as if he wants nothing more than what he already has. But we think he deserves a home.
If anyone is interested in adopting him, it would be the most beautiful news for him and for us.

Why are some people so cruel ???
Young, alone and injured…left to die. This poor little guy has had a really rough start to his life. Barely 4 months old puppy was found on the side of the road in town of Subotica. He came in with multiple puncture wounds, Demodex mites, chemical burns and a painful body. Currently he is in medical boarding while we try to get him comfortable and treat his wounds and skin.

Danas smo pronasli malog, maleckog pincha. Jako je mlad. Tek menja zubice.
Donacije mozete uplatiti putem kredit kartica. Hvala vam! I molimo vas dijelite ovaj post!

We want to ask you please to review the info here about Alex shelter; and if there is any way you can help.
Alex was originally founded as EPAR FRIEND shelter by SAV principal member Slavica – read more on her at: serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/ – just scroll down quite a long way until you come to “Dr. Medicine Slavica Mazak Bešlić – Subotica, Serbian Republic”.
Introduction
From 2003.to 2010, Alex shelter was known as (EPAR) FRIEND shelter.
Here are a few SAV links from the past about this:
serbiananimalsvoice.com/2010/12/21/serbia-211210-subotica-city-officials-try-to-take-700-stray-dogs-at-epar-shelter-to-kill-them-please-watch-video-below-of-todays-events/

serbiananimalsvoice.com/2010/07/02/serbia-june-2010-new-pictures-of-the-rescued-stray-dogs-at-epar-shelter/
During this time the shelter was run by Slavica Mazak Beslic.
Now the shelter has been renamed as no kill shelter is ‘ALEX shelter’.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Drustvo-za-zastitu-zivotinja-ALEX/643285729076760
Today it is run by a lady Mrs. Adriana Nadj; this has been the case since 2010. She acts alone with big help by her boyfriend – that is great, but very difficult.
It was the first ‘no kill’ dog shelter in Serbia, founded in 2003. So this shelter has a long history and was involved with the original formation of SAV in England. As you can see from the above links, the shelter and SAV go back many years.
The shelter has a historical meaning for Serbia. There were up to 1000 stray dogs living there; some of which were re-homed and some which died at the shelter by natural death.
There are currently around 500 dogs at the shelter.
Past history – further reading:
The shelter was opened on 18.01.2003.
At the time, Subotica legally permitted euthanasia of dogs and on Fridays, people could bring their dogs to be euthanized for free. The shelter couldn’t allow this, so people from the shelter took those dogs and carried them to the shelter instead. This was the first no-kill shelter in Serbia. Its goal is protection of animals and the environment. The shelter covers the area of 12000m2 + an additional land of app. 3600m2 next to the shelter which Adrijana received as a gift to expend the shelter.
The shelter has 500 dogs, all spayed and neutered. Around 70% of the dogs are old (some have been in the shelter since 2003/2004). Old dogs often lose control of their legs or suffer from an illness of some internal organ.
The shelter currently does not have sponsors to cover medical costs. It is now looking for donations and / or sponsors to help with costs.
Small boxes at the shelter contain up to six dogs grouped by personality, to prevent fights. Dogs are also spread across six fields, also grouped by personality, around 10-20 dogs are on the fields. Each field also has a small pond. There are few covered boxes, which contain dogs known for attempting to jump over the box walls. The small boxes and the fields require repair of old covers and installation of new covers, to provide shade.
Since it was founded, the shelter has helped thousands of dogs, rescued, adopted and treated them. Dogs can only be adopted after a mandatory inspection of its potential new home. Adoption is not possible if the owner intends to keep the dog on a chain. Adoption also comes with a mandatory contract. In case the dog is found to be in inadequate conditions, the dog is taken back to the shelter. The owner is also allowed to return the dog to the shelter at any time.
The shelter is funded exclusively by donations, which are not regular or reliable. The City of Subotica currently only provides a free garbage dumpster.
Even though the shelter was officially registered in 2004, the state is requesting that the shelter re-registers to adjust to new regulations.
The shelter also purchased a van to carry food three times a week from the nearby factory and the fuel costs vary between 8000 and 10000 RSD. Electricity costs are around 15000 RSD per month.
The shelter requires building materials, cleaning supplies, food (granules and canned food, salami, bread, etc), blankets, fleas/ticks products and money to cover the vet costs, bills, etc.

SAV comment – Please help the shelter in any way you can; thank you.
In the past the shelter has also been home to ‘Klementina’ the pig, who was given as a sick and injured animal to the shelter to be killed and given as meat to the dogs. NO WAY was this going to happen; instead we pulled out all the stops to help get Klementina as good as she could be.
We recorded this at:
serbiananimalsvoice.com/2008/12/24/serbia-epar-shelter-saves-klementina-the-pigs-bacon/
Once she had been given veterinary treatment she was a very happy pig as you can see from the following link:
serbiananimalsvoice.com/2009/03/30/serbia-klementina-the-pig-at-epar-shelter-requires-donations-to-pay-for-her-operation-can-you-help-please/
Today there is a Facebook site for the shelter –
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Drustvo-za-zastitu-zivotinja-ALEX/643285729076760
Here you can get information and see lots of pictures of the dogs.
Please help in any way you can. Things are currently difficult for shelters as we are constantly being forced to take action against the regional authorities who are NOT providing the facilities and shelters for animals that they should.
The events of today (10/12/14) are so very typical. Read more about this at serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/12/10/serbia-101214-crisis-authorities-now-seek-retribution-to-animal-shelters-for-past-exposure-and-charges-of-criminal-veterinarian-read-on-for-more/
Thank you all for your continued help and support for the animals in Serbia. We are also doing what we can here at SAV in England, along with jean at SOS for Serbian Animals: serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/11/16/england-sos-for-serbian-animals-please-take-a-look/
The fight is a very long and hard one for Serbian animals – but we never give up – WE WILL WIN for them !

SPECIAL APPEAL 22/2/15 – Please Help With This.
U R G E N T !!!
Nearing the deadline for payment of the debt, and we have not even a quarter collected.
More and more I’m afraid that the dogs have to return to the street, because we have no other solution currently.
Everything what we did for them so far, will be in vain … their lives will again be are jeopardized. Can someone help them to stay safe ???
16 DOGS ARE IN BOARDING KENNELS AND THEIR FUTURE IS NOW A VERY UNCERTAIN.
WE ARE PAST DUE ON THEIR BOARDING FEES ARE FIND WE ARE IN REALLY BIG TROUBLE… WE ARE APPEALING TO EVERYONE TO HELP US KEEP THESE STRAY DOGS OFF THE STREETS AND SAFE!!!
Lina’s Animal Rescue is organisation for animal welfare from Serbia . . We have 17 dogs in small private unfinished shelter, 20 dogs in 2 boarding kennels and 15 kitties in one rescuer’s home.
Funds are desperately needed to pay the boarding kennel fees. We have debt for December for 10 dogs and still unpaid January for 16 dogs. The life of street dogs everywhere is difficult, but here in Serbia the dog catchers kill them rather than rescue them. Finding homes is very difficult as the culture in Serbia is not to adopt dogs, but rather buy a puppy then turn it out in the streets later when it is grown.
Ideally we want to adopt the dogs outside Serbia, but this involves blood-work, lab tests and transportation fees. The average Serbian salary is 200€ and each dog’s boarding fees are 60€ per month ( 40 boarding kennel + 20 food ) . With 20 dogs currently in boarding facilities, the debt is too great to even think about renovating our shelter.
First we must improve our housing situation as boarding costs are too high, pay bills and veterinary fees and then join forces with international rescue groups to finds these animals ‘furever” homes outside of Serbia. .
Please donate , this is URGENT APPEAL !
Spread the word!
Youcaring is a perfectly safe site in Canada where you can donate to causes such as this.

Shelter ‘FELIX’
CHANTAL’s STORY – Shelter Felix.
Above – Chantal today – a beautiful cat full of life; very different to the little kitten in October.
We have no idea of where or when Chantal was born, or how she ended up on the street all alone; what we do know is that she was found lying motionless near the pavement, most probably hit by a car.
She was the embodiment of utter despair, a tiny and seemingly hopeless creature with filthy, matted fur and wide terrified eyes that was totally unable to get up.
Her first X ray scan showed that she had a fracture of her right femoral head and all of us were puzzled to see that she was still able to put weight on her right rear leg, yet she was dragging the other one, so another X-ray scan needed to be taken and it turned out that she had a broken spine as well. Someone even mentioned putting her down, but we wanted to try and give her another chance, regardless of how slim it was, so we put her in the cage; she was being given painkillers together with vitamin B complex every day and we all just waited to see what would happen next.
Fortunately, even though her vertebrae were broken, the spinal cord remained unharmed and she promptly began to walk – staggering, stumbling and falling but she walked. A stroke of good luck in her life (which had been miserable so far) was that she befriended a healthy kitten we’d taken in around the same time. Slightly a little younger than she was, her new friend quickly became her therapist, her strength and the force that pushed her forward.
In just a couple of weeks, with huge help of her little pal, Chantal managed to beat all odds and emerged a winner 🙂 She keeps improving by the day, she is already capable of climbing onto the bed and she spends most of her time doing more or less everything a healthy kitten would do – she’s playing with cat toys, defending her place in a cat tunnel she’s proclaimed to be hers, wrestling with her kitty friends and her days are finally full of joy.
She is not filthy and pitiable anymore; her long hair is shiny, sleek and soft and she’s already showing what a gorgeous, luxurious furred beauty she will become when she grows up.
At such a tender age she was forced to endure something that no cat, much less a kitten should have to go though in a lifetime, but she fought like hell and she won because at least sometimes “fortune favors the brave”.

Figaro’s feeling much better after just two days of medical treatment.
His body temperature has returned to normal, he’s got a healthy appetite and he behaves like he always has, half playful and sweet, half grumpy. If he stays this way, his leg surgery and neutering will finally be done next week.
Hopefully he’ll recover smoothly, without any additional problems; heaven knows he’s had enough of those already.

Serbia: Latest Felix News – 7/7/15.
http://www.youcaring.com/danica-s-cat-shelter-felix-374463
With the summer heat in full swing, life at the shelter seems quite uneventful as most of the kitties are spending their days passed out all over the place, rightfully feeling it’s too hot to even move around. However, it’s not only that their needs remain the same, but now is also the time to start and finish all of the minor repairs at the shelter.
Almost all of the platforms, ladders and wooden wire spools the cats are having so much fun with while playing in the yard need to be replaced now, after being exposed to all kinds of weather over the last few years. Autumn rains and the winter cold have taken their toll and no matter how well these wooden items were protected by paint or stain, they can’t last forever. And our kitties just love them all big time!
The old outdoor fence which became wobbly three years ago is miraculously still holding up, but the posts keep crumbling and deteriorating with every passing day and it’s been ages since we could close the gates properly. It would be fabulous if this summer we could manage to raise the funds to rebuild the brick-made pillars and the small wall between them, clean and polish the old iron fence above and replace the sheet metal part of the gates. It’s got to be done this summer before the rotten posts completely fall apart and the whole fence goes down, that is…
And last but not the least, not by a long shot – the kitties must eat every day and now the time is rapidly coming for the mandatory yearly vaccinations against rabies. The problem is that donations regularly slow down as summer approaches and while we totally understand everyone’s busy planning their vacations, our situation is always unenviable at this time of year. The same thing has been happening forever; when the weather is nice, we’re barely keeping afloat, and when we have enough funds to do something, it’s impossible to work outside due to the weather conditions. We should’ve gotten used to it by now, I guess…
Anyways, if you have a little extra you could spare to help us out please do so! Even the smallest donation means a lot, as they all add up and get us closer to our goal. A three-digit number of lazy, relaxed kitties and a couple of their tired humans will be immeasurably grateful for your vital help!
Take a look at our website and our blog to see who you’re supporting!

Sorry we haven’t been posting much lately, (although we wish we could), we’ve had many problems over the last few months.
We’d really like to thank all of our wonderful and caring friends who are helping us, even if we don’t have enough time to regularly ask for the help which is always needed and more than welcome.
Our urgent appeal for the funds required to feed the kitties and pay off the vet bills was launched in mid-April, but we’re still more than $800 short.
Please share and help if you possibly can, every little bit counts!

Our debt at the vet’s is up around 400 euros already and will get larger as the additional cost of de-worming and de-fleaing all of the shelter kitties is awaiting us next week. The even more serious problems are our expenses for food (which are always high) are becoming literally frighteningly high during the transitional season, when the temperature differences between day and night are vast and even the toughest kitties easily get sick if they’re not fed properly and abundantly.
Honestly, we don’t feel comfortable asking for help over and over again but the truth is we can’t do much without your support. Is there anything more heartwarming than the sight of content, happy kitties which don’t have to wonder where their next meal will come from? All of the Felix cats know what hunger feels like, they’re all familiar with neglect and the danger of life on the streets and when they found their safe haven, their first and only home, can we possibly all gather together to provide them with what they need most?
If you’re able to donate any amount please do so, as everything adds up and keeps these wonderful creatures’ eyes bright and their purrs loud! If you’re ever questioned if and how much the kitties appreciate your kindness and generosity, just look at them!
As to us, their staff, we are grateful beyond words for all of the help we get!

15/4/15 – Latest News and Photos From Shelter Felix.
We send our best wishes to Danica as we know she has not been feeling very well recently; the days are long and tiring for her looking after all the cats – and as you can see from the photos below; they are all looking so beautiful and content.
Quite rightly, Danica must be very proud of them all.
Here is part of the message she has sent to us this week – please help with a donation if you can – whatever amount – it all helps !
Pay a visit to the Webshop – link given below – and see the whole range of fab cat items which you can purchase; and support the shelter at the same time !

Dear Mark;
We’ve been quite lucky weather wise this winter after all, but some of our oldest and sickest kitties sadly didn’t make it through the cold season. Winter is always a time of troubles, losses and grief, it somehow seems the most delicate cats simply can’t endure the dark, gloomy months, depressing for them and ourselves alike.
The biggest problem of running a cat sanctuary is exactly the fact that we provide all of the rescued cats with a lifetime of care, which means we’re here to offer them everything they need until the end of their days and when the time comes, we tearfully pet them for the last time and say our final goodbyes.
Our hearts have been broken countless times so far, but we must go on…
Right now some days are sunny, some are not, but even when the weather is nice the sun is deceiving and although the kitties enjoy spending their time outside during the day, all of them sleep in their properly heated rooms at night.
Luckily, thanks to all of our donors and friends, we’ll be able to keep the central heating running for as long as it’s needed.
Many kitties are shedding these days and looking shaggy and unkempt, some of them have lost some weight, but now when the real spring has finally come we’ll do everything in our power to help them thrive again.
The weather forecast is somewhat worrisome, it’s supposed to rain heavily in May and although the kitties won’t be cold, we all hope to avoid the horrible floods we had last year. Cat Shelter Felix wasn’t affected then, but no one can know what the future can bring…
We greatly appreciate your support!
To Everybody – Thank you so much for being there for us!
Sincerely
Danica

21/3/15 – New Gas Arrives Just In Time !
Over the last few days, night temperatures have been below zero again, so the arrival of the gas delivery truck was more than welcomed yesterday.
Just when we were down to around 5% of the total volume of the gas tank left, heating fuel arrived and all of the kitties’ rooms are warm again!
Thank you all a million times over for coming to our rescue again, this wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for your caring generosity!

Serbia: Great News From Felix Shelter – Funds For Second Tank Of Gas Fully Raised In Less Than A Week – Well Done All Those Who Gave !!
Re our very recent appeal for Danica and the cats at Felix for a second tank of gas (or see post immediately below dated 11/3/15 also):

Well in less than a week the target amount for the new tank of gas has been met and greatly exceeded ! Fantastic work by all; and big thanks to everyone who donated to raise money for the fuel; especially as a couple of really large donations were given – Thank you all !!
Here is a message from Danica about the help that she has been provided with:
Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix
Dear friends,
Thanks to you all and due to your overwhelming generosity, all of the funds needed for the new tank of heating fuel have been raised in just a couple of days!
By the end of next week, our gas tank will be filled up again and the kitties will be warm and cozy regardless of the state of the weather outside.
Such a huge weight off of our shoulders!
You guys are absolutely amazing!
All of us here have been left speechless by all of your incredible kindness and we’re humbled and honored to have such wonderful friends!
You all rock!

11/3/15 – New Appeal To Help With Next Tank of Gas
Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix
Please share and help if you can!
No matter how hard we’ve tried to raise the funds for one more tank of gas for central heating, we’re still far from reaching the goal.
Wonderful Laura Simpson and her awesome organization The Great Animal Rescue Chase & Harmony Fund have stepped in again and have done as much as they could, but we’re around $1000 US short nonetheless.
The additional problem is that the gas delivery trucks have to travel more than 200 km in both directions in order to deliver us the heating fuel and naturally, the gas company won’t even consider sending it on such a long trip if it’s half empty.
It’s not that cold right now (although it’s not warm either), but we’re expecting a drop in temperature accompanied with strong wind and sleet next week, so we’ll have to switch to electric heaters until we succeed in raising the entire sum of money needed for a full tank of gas.
A significant number of the Felix kitties are 18 -19 years old and they simply can’t handle the kind of cold that young and healthy cats can.
Once again, we’re reaching out to all of you to help us keep the cats warm and comfortable!
Even the smallest donation means a lot as everything adds up and gets us closer to our goal! Our gas tank’s gotten almost empty now and this is really a time sensitive emergency!
To donate please go to:

Come on folks – lets get it filled again quickly !! – Thanks, SAV.

19/2/15 – ‘Utata’ Is Newest Member of SAV Team.
For the last few weeks there has been a lot of thought given here (England) to undertaking a virtual adoption of one of the cats at ‘Felix’ shelter which is run in Serbia by our good friend Danica.
No final choice was made as there are so many appealing faces at the shelter.
Then on Sunday night, more news and photos came through from Danica about some of the cats at the shelter. There was one little lady who immediately grabbed attention; Danica wrote:
Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix
‘Utata’ is living a happy life at the shelter, but there’s one little thing missing. She needs a virtual “parent” who will perfect her happiness and show her she’s special by choosing to sponsor her, just her. Is it you?
Utata needs a sponsor ! – Utata is about five years old, I found her as a tiny kitten. She was stubborn and had a mind of her own from the beginning. Although she cuddled with me she was generally distrustful towards people, until some time ago when she has suddenly become cuddly and lovable with everyone. She gets along perfectly with other cats.
—–
So, that was it – no more messing around and never making a choice; immediately it was decided that little lady Utata was going to be adopted virtually by SAV. On 16/2 we made immediate contact with Danica and informed of the decision. Today, 17/2; we have (via the Felix Blog site), given Danica our first months money to pay for the adoption of the newest member of the SAV yeam.
Utata poses for her picture to be taken
Utata now joins little ‘Twinnsie’ at SOI Dogs; who we also sponsor.
You can see more about Twinnsie on one of our fairly recent posts:
https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/12/27/thailand-hello-twinnsie/ – or on the following link you can go direct to the video we had from twinnsie this last Christmas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29FaTYldzHU&feature=youtu.be
– it has to be those wonderful big furry ears and those very appealing eyes that won Twinnsie over as our SOI Dogs adoption. She is a beautiful little dog with big, furry ears.
We still have to make formal sections for Twinnsie and Utata as part of the team in the ‘About Us’ section on the site; but it will be happening real soon; so keep watching.
Both SOI Dogs (Thailand) and Felix shelter in Serbia have many loving animals who are in urgent need of a sponsor to help them get through their lives, by providing regular food and also by helping to cover any veterinary fees all within the monthly sponsorship cost. Could that sponsor be you ? – Please try and help by adopting an animal – it makes such a huge difference to the teams at the shelters as it provides more financial security for the animals.
Please see the message from John at the SOI Dogs Foundation (Thailand) website – https://www.soidog.org/Default.aspx
or from Danica at Felix Shelter (Serbia) via http://novisadcats.blogspot.com/ – just scroll down until you see ‘cats for virtual adoption’ on the right hand side – http://catshelter-felix.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=72&lang=en
Then make your choice and start your adoption(s) !
I have a very strong feeling you will be seeing more of both Twinnsie and Utata in the coming months. We welcome them both as the latest members to the SAV team.
We will continue to post regular updates on all the other cats at Felix shelter, as well as the dogs with John and the crew at SOI Dogs in Thailand.
Regards for now – Mark.

Fiona’s doing great, even though she’s a tripod kitty now 🙂 Before it started snowing, she was cheerfully hopping through the yard, scratching cat posts and having fun as if nothing had changed, but now that everything’s white, cold and wet outside, she’s spending most of her time indoors.
A huge thank you to all of you who contributed towards the costs of her surgery and post operative care, thus enabling this beautiful girl to enjoy life again!

Yet another snowstorm has hit us yesterday. It’s a heavy, wet snow that never stays around for a long time because it’s just not cold enough.
Although the actual outside temperature is around 0 degrees Celsius, the “feels like” temperature is much lower. The stinging wind that brought us the snow chills you right to the bone and most of the kitties are tucked up in their nicely heated rooms; the radiators have suddenly become everyone’s favorite snoozing spots.
However, some of them are sneezing and having eye discharge, it seems to happen every winter, so please, if you can, help us provide them with high quality food and vitamin supplements to make them stronger for what lies ahead.
This year’s cold season is evidently far from finished.
Thank you all in advance!

Both the following from 18/1/15
Utterly sad and totally heartbreaking, but we should’ve seen it coming 😦
Our wonderful, sparkling, loving boy Tak, the only survivor out of the three kittens that arrived from a construction site in Belgrade in September has FIP. It’s a fatal and incurable viral disease which has already killed his sister Tok, and now thinking of it, it’s highly probable that the non-effusive (dry) form of FIP claimed the life of his brother Tik.
It seems all of them were doomed from the start…
We don’t really know if these three cuties were blood related, as we’ve received confusing and contradictory information about them for months, but at least one of them, if not all, were probably born to a mother who was a carrier of coronavirus.
It’s impossible to say if Tak, Tik and Tok got infected from her or from each other and if genetic or husbandry factors were involved. But the sad reality is that all of them got sick with a horrible disease with a virtual 100% mortality rate for which not only that there is no diagnostic test, but also no effective treatment.
FIP is still mysterious and the only thing that’s known for sure is that it usually starts in little kittens and strikes suddenly, weeks, months or years after the initial infection.
Just a week ago, Tak seemed to be a happy, cheerful, energetic kitty boy with no problems in the world. Without warning he began to slow down, became lethargic and his belly looked slightly swollen, but none of us wanted to see what the vet confirmed – that he too has FIP. He’s been under treatment ever since, he’s being given IV fluids, antibiotics and is being force fed as we’re hoping to make him as comfortable as possible and trying to achieve at least temporary palliation of the clinical signs.
Things couldn’t look darker at the moment and the prognosis couldn’t be worse, but maybe a miracle will happen tomorrow…

SAV Comment:
Please help Danica and all of the cats this winter if you can by looking at our other post of today You can also see directly below (in ‘Shelters’ Page) , which has a video of feeding time for you to enjoy
– Thank you.
https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/01/18/serbia-18115-can-you-help-keep-the-cats-fed-this-winter/
Our real winter has begun a week ago. After a couple of sunny and rather mild days for this time of year, a bitterly cold blast arrived and we were caught in its icy grip, with temperatures plummeting to 10 degrees Celsius below zero.
Although the central heating was on day and night and despite the fact that all of the kitties had grown really thick winter coats, they were eating astonishing amounts of food and the last food delivery literally disappeared in a blink of an eye.
Actually, kitties are always eating more than usual during the cold season and even though the weather isn’t so hard on us these days, it’s becoming harder and harder to keep all of the Felix residents properly fed. This winter is predicted to be brutal and it’s highly probable the worst is yet to come, so even deeper freezes are sure to be coming our way and the first big snowstorm can easily cut us off from the rest of the world.
We simply must have ample food reserves in case this happens and we get snowed in just like we did twice last year.
All of you know that we don’t usually ask for help to buy the cats’ food, but we can’t possibly feed a three digit number of kitties on our own.
If you can donate even a little, please do so, because everything adds up and it really means a lot!

SAV Comment – As Danica says below; not the start to a new year that anyone wants. But saying this, we know that as you can see, little Tik finally got to know love, warmth and a tummy full of food, all thanks to Danica who has to be admired by us all for her dedication to helping felines in Serbia.
Below we are showing some pictures of Tik when being cared for by Felix shelter.
Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix
We all strongly hoped that this year would not begin with heartbreak but sadly, our wonderful and audacious little Tik gave up the ultimate struggle for life.
He was just too small and too weak and he ultimately came to the point where his exhausted body simply couldn’t carry on. Possibly he got tired of fighting a desperate but apparently hopeless fight that seemed to last forever, and it was easier for him to just let go.
He fought the hardest he could, we did everything we could, but sometimes not even everything is good enough.
Fly free now, my sweet little angel, I know we’ll meet again one day 😦

Please share and help if you can!
Fiona arrived at the shelter about four years ago. She was one of 17 strays which had been living in a joint yard in my hometown where their caretaker was feeding them and taking care of them the best she could. That is until a cat hating neighbor hired two brutes to round up all of the cats, put them into bags, take them away and probably kill them.
All 17 cats found their safe haven here at the shelter and have been living nice, quiet and safe lives ever since, Fiona among them. She wasn’t exactly people friendly, understandably, but she’s mellowed a little over the years.
A few days ago she started to behave strangely, she was somehow too quiet and it turned out she had seriously hurt her left hind leg. Nobody has any idea what had happened, but her paw was smashed and the vet had no other choice but to amputate, which was done two days ago.
The costs of surgery and postoperative treatment will be huge, around the 250 euro mark (a little more than $300 USD) and with so many kitties to take care of, we simply can’t pay them off on our own.
Please, help this gorgeous girl who’s already been through so much!
Tripod cats can have full, quality lives and she will have that for sure, once she adjusts to walking on three legs.
Whatever you are able to give really means a lot for her!

Little Tok Is Very Sick.
Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix
Little Tok is not doing well and sadly it seems we’re losing her.
She’s still eating and cuddling, she likes to be held, but she is getting weaker by the day. Her fur has become bristly, she is at least two times smaller than her healthy litter mates and knowing that FIP is a terminal diagnosis, all of us doubt there’s much hope left.
We’ve already tried everything we could possibly do to make her feel better, to no avail and now it’s just a matter of days, maybe even hours until she lets go.
We never gave up, she’s been trying so hard and the very best she could for weeks, but it looks like she simply lacks the strength to fight anymore.
At least she got to know how it feels to be pampered, fed and loved, if only for a short time.
So very sorry, little sweetie.

The kitties are still a bit confused and don’t know exactly what they’re supposed to do with them, it’s been ages since the last time they smelled catnip, but they’re very interested and will soon find out how magnificent their gifts really are!
Thank you so much, Claire! These are probably the most wonderful gifts the Felix kitties will receive this Christmas!

Please crosspost to anyone and everyone that you know – we have very limited time on this.
Now, here is the main issue of this post; a message from Danica that the first gas has arrived at the shelter.
Danica writes:
The first tank of gas purchased this winter has arrived at last, thanks to the amazing Laura Simpson, The Great Animal Rescue Chase & Harmony Fund, and the simply outstanding support of our friends!
Although the days are dark and gloomy, with freezing rain and a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius, there’s luckily no snow yet and the gas delivery truck pulled into the shelter with no problems at all.
Our gas tank has been filled up with 1500 liters of gas, and the central heating is finally on. All of the kitties are enjoying the warmth of their home and will continue doing so over the next two and a half months! 🙂
Thank you just doesn’t seem enough to express our gratitude to all of you who have all pulled together and generously contributed towards the costs of the heating fuel!

We’ll order heating fuel tomorrow and the gas delivery truck should be pulling into the shelter on Saturday.
No more shivering and freezing here over the next two and a half months! We hope we’ll soon be able to cheer your hearts with the new photos of Felix kitties sitting, lying and sleeping on the pleasantly warm radiators.

We should’ve posted an update on Shalimar sooner, but with so many things going on and a frantic struggle to raise funds for the first tank of gas for central heating needed this winter, we simply weren’t able to inform you about everything, no matter how much we wanted to. Well, after a few weeks of receiving drugs firstly by injection, then orally, combined with topical treatments of his eye with antibiotic ointments and eye drops, our gorgeous blue eyed boy (photo above) is doing just fine.

MORGAN
Watch the video of Morgan here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avkp8fqZdTY&feature=youtu.be
Despite the very serious problems he has, Morgan is fighting with all of his might. His eyes look terrible, the skin around his eyes is already irritated due to the topical treatments he’s been having for months. His nasal blood vessels keep bursting whenever he sneezes, his cute little face is smudged with blood, but he eats, purrs and cuddles and his desire to live is tremendous. He continues being under treatment which has already lasted forever and everyone is doing everything that can possibly be done to help him.

TOK
Little Tok is holding on, she is still eating RC Recovery canned food and she’s begun to eat dry cat food as well. Her belly is still swollen and she is being given Lasix among other drugs. She is sweet and nice, enjoys attention, loves to be cuddled and even though she’s not out of the woods yet, hopefully these are signs that she’s getting better.

TIK
Tik has improved significantly, he doesn’t have a fever anymore but he’s still being given antibiotics through injections. He sleeps a lot, I’m guessing this weather makes him sleepy but he is also eating and playing and he’s already mastered walking on three legs.

The Harmony Fund
The Harmony Fund offers a lifeline to so called “underdog” animal rescue squads across the planet. Our partners are the small but incredibly courageous and effective animal rescue teams who operate in parts of the world where funding is very hard to come by. Our supporters are helping us to dramatically impact the capacity of these rescue teams to touch thousands upon thousands of animals who might otherwise be unreachable.
Gratitude and respect are at the cornerstone of our relationship with our supporters. We do not expose our supporters to graphic photos of animal suffering or distribute dire forecasts about animal suffering. Instead we focus on a spirit of joy and determination as we pursue essential operations to provide food, veterinary medicine, shelter and protection from cruelty for animals worldwide.
Danica Mirkovic cares for over a hundred rescued cats, all taken from the streets of Serbia. Most of them have experienced great physical trauma. They know what its like to be cold, really cold, and most face chronic health vulnerability due to their former life. Do you think we can surprise this sanctuary with a delivery of fuel? PLEASE READ DANICA’s PLEA:
__________________________________________
“We’re in a deep crisis. We’re desperately trying to raise $2,300 for the first tank of gas needed for the heat. We’re freezing in the meantime. We have no money to purchase heating fuel, and according to the weather forecast, a severe drop in temperature, violent winds and icy rains are coming in this week.
If we don’t succeed in raising the funds for the first tank of gas before snow comes, it’s possible that the gas truck won’t be able to push its way through because the snow usually makes most of the roads in this region impassable.
Harmony Fund was the first organization that has ever helped us significantly and frankly, I have no idea who else to turn to. When the snow starts to fly, we’ll be cut off from the rest of the world just like we’ve been every single winter so far. Without proper heating, it’s questionable how many kitties will manage to survive the upcoming long, cold months and live to see another spring. It’s a dire emergency and without your help, I doubt there’s much hope for any of us here” – Danica Mirkovic, Felix Cat Shelter

Danica writes:
Honestly, things have never been worse. We’re desperately trying to raise 1.800 euros for the first tank of gas for central heating and we’re freezing in the meantime.
We have no money to purchase heating fuel and according to the weather forecast, a severe drop in temperature, violent winds and icy rains are coming in this week.
I have to admit I’m worried sick about all of the sick kitties that are currently freezing inside the house. The cats’ rooms in both parts of the yard are a bit warmer and the kitties are snuggling together to heat each other up but without proper heating, even those which are still healthy will get sick in no time flat.
It has never happened before, we usually begin to raise funds for the first tank of gas for central heating in early autumn but this year’s phase of shelter repairs has lasted forever and sadly this is the result.
And what’s even worse, if we don’t succeed in raising the funds for the first tank of gas before snow comes, it’s possible that the gas truck won’t be able to push its way through because the snow usually makes most of the roads in this region impassable.
I wish I had better news, but the overall situation is pretty dire.
Please give anything you can, no matter how small. Do you know anyone or any organisation that can make a bigger donation to help keep the cats warm ?
Danica has worked so very hard to get the shelter into excellent shape; as you can see from many of our previous post. But all the cost of the work has taken its toll – this is a shelter after all which relies on donations to survive and does NOT get anything in the way of support from the government.
All of this hard work must not be undertaken in vain – funds are urgently needed to keep the cats warm this winter.
Please give anything that you or others you may know, can.
Thank you.

28/11/14 – Tok update:
Tok has finally begun to fight back a little and even eats on her own, although I also have to syringe feed her to make sure she’s swallowed enough food.
The problem is that she’s horribly skinny and weak, and her belly is still swollen, maybe slightly a bit less now. She’s receiving injections every day, eats RC Recovery canned food and is being given vitamin supplements.
We’re all aware that the prognosis is not promising, but even if just one out of ten cats with the same problem manages to pull through, we’ll do everything it takes to ensure she becomes that fortunate one.
For as long as she’s not suffering, which she doesn’t seem to be for the time being, we refuse to give up on her.

Dear all
Danica has kindly contacted us today to give us an overview of the situation at Felix shelter.
So below is a short summary of events. As you will see; keeping a good supply of gas (via large bottles) is the next big issue to ensure that all the cats are kept warm during the harsh Serbian winter. If you feel you can donate any amount, then everything is always most welcome. Donation links are given at the end of this post.
So here is a short summary of the current situation from Danica:
-
Many kitties are not feeling well, they must be affected by the weather just like we are, so the oldest, chronically ill and disabled ones are having a hard time.
-
Those with acute health problems are under treatment, but all we can do for the geriatric kitties, (we have quite a lot of them), is to feed them high quality food and give vitamin supplements to help them get through the day and stay with us for as long as they can.
-
Tik’s leg amputation surgery was performed a couple of weeks ago and everything went well, he was also neutered at the same time as I wanted to avoid the risk of putting such a young kitty under general anesthesia twice in such a short period of time. He’s been receiving antibiotics and had his bandages changed daily for a week and is recovering extremely well.
-
Unfortunately, his little sister Tok is seriously ill, and the vet suspects she has FIP. Prognosis is poor if he’s right but I still hope he’s wrong and I’m doing everything I can to help her.
-
Tufnica and Njanja look a little better although they’ve suddenly become picky eaters, which is not good as they are both very skinny. It’s not that they’re not eating, but their food preferences are changeable and I never know what kind of food they will be willing to accept.
-
Echo is still being fed Royal Canin veterinary urinary SO food, and I hope the surgical removal of her bladder stones won’t be necessary.
-
Morgan is slightly improving, he’s finally eating but his nose keeps blocking up despite the drugs he’s receiving that are helping to clear the mucus out. Whenever he sneezes droplets of blood are coming out of his nose but he seems to be breathing a little easier afterwards. He’s still under treatment and everyday’s visits to the vet are the norm already, but he’s a genuine fighter that refuses to give up and his chances are increasing with each passing day.
-
Tink was spayed a couple of days ago and everything went well although she had a little trouble waking up from the general anesthesia. Her wound is healing nicely, she behaves normally and her life is back into its cozy routine.
Now we’re trying to raise funds for gas for central heating, we should’ve begun weeks ago, but we had to finish the shelter repairs first. Not a day goes by without new problems…
With sincere thanks
Danica

Little Tok is seriously ill.
She had been badly injured before she even arrived at the shelter, one of her eyes had leaked out and a part of her lip is missing. But now her abdomen is swollen, filling with fluid and the vet suspects she has FIP. 😦 A few days ago she had a high fever and has been receiving powerful drugs since, so right now her body temperature is normal, but she’s refusing to eat and seems to be giving up already.
We all know there is no known cure or effective treatment for FIP at this time, unfortunately, but there’s also no definitive diagnostic test to confirm it’s actually FIP we’re dealing with. Knowing that Tok’s brother Tik was born with a deformed leg which had to be amputated, the vet has come to the conclusion there was something horribly wrong with the entire litter from the very beginning.
Anyway, while there is life there is hope and even if this little sweetie is not much of a fighter, we’ll fight our hardest for her and do whatever it takes to save her if possible.
Please consider donating towards Tok’s vet care! Our vet bills are mounting but this precious little girl needs all the help she can get!
This tiny angel needs a miracle!

Taking everything into account, we came up with the brilliant idea to put up transparent window blinds (instead of those useless tarps we had) to protect the sheltered area beneath the roof eaves and also the newly made corridor below from the icy northerly winds so characteristic for Vojvodina – all the while nonchalantly ignoring the fact we have no money to turn our irrefutably good plans into reality.
The necessary materials have been purchased on debt and the work is more than half done already; once it’s finished, hopefully less fuel will be needed to keep the kitties’ rooms properly heated. Even if it doesn’t happen, all of the cats are obviously enjoying their new sheltered spaces and most of them are not just watchers, but they’re active participants and helpers while the work is still ongoing.

Please, share and help if you can!
Tik, Tak and Tok are siblings, three unwanted babies that had been living at a construction site in Belgrade since they were born. Their mother was a stray which disappeared a long time ago and they were forced to fend for themselves in that dangerous place, fed by locals but totally on their own and unprotected.
They were approximately three months old when they arrived at the shelter at the beginning of September, skinny and confused, with voracious appetites, but cuddly, curious and sweet.
Unfortunately, only one of them, a little tuxie boy named Tak, seems to be healthy. His brother Tik has a congenital birth defect, he was born with a deformed right rear leg which needs to be amputated.
Their sister, a tabby and white girl we named Tok, has only one eye as her other eye has already leaked out because of some untreated infection (probably herpes, chlamydia or both) and what’s left of it will have to be removed.
Although we thought Tok also had a harelip when she was brought to the shelter, we’re now more inclined to believe she was actually seriously injured some time ago, as a part of her lip is missing and she doesn’t have a cleft palate.
All three of them have fit in nicely right away and are getting stronger every day, so it’s time to start thinking about their surgeries.
The amputation of Tik’s leg and the removal of what’s left of Tok’s right eye will cost around 300 euros/$430CAD.
We need all of the help we can get in order to fix the serious problems these sad and neglected babies have the best way we can and enable them to live the long and happy lives they deserve.
Every donation counts, no matter what the size!

Introducing ‘Freddie’
From Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix
Freddie is a young kitty boy who had the misfortune of being shot by a hunter with a shotgun in February of 2014.
He was found seriously injured, with a completely shattered front left leg and a broken front right leg.
Both of his injured legs were operated on months ago, but his body is still chock-full of buckshot.
After the surgeries, he spent four months in a cage with a metal rod put into one of his broken legs while the other one was splinted and two more months recovering once the metal rod was removed.
He was kept in foster care, and was not allowed to move very much . He was brought him to our shelter in August 2014, as his foster caretaker wished to give him the chance of a fulfilled life in the company of other cats.
Unaccustomed to the curious crowd of kitties, he is still somewhat withdrawn and shy, but he’s able to walk, although he’s limping and his front left leg is kind of stiff.
Hopefully time will heal all wounds.
Please give anything you can to help with his recovery – thank you.

11/8/14 – ‘Felix’ Shelter – Emergency Call for Funds for Roof Guttering ! – Can You Help ?

Please network, share and help if you can! It’s an emergency!
Dear friends, I guess you already know that we’ve been struggling with the roof renovation for more than two months now and the biggest problem, as usual, is the lack of funds.
Last years’ generous donation (for which we’re immensely grateful) covered the costs of the new roof itself, but with so many problems arising one after the other since the repair work began, we’re running into big debts yet again and there’s no end in sight.
As if it weren’t enough, the weather is definitely not on our side; it’s been raining extremely heavily over the last couple of weeks and we still have no gutters on the new roof, nor the money to purchase about 34 meters of it!
Our backyard is turning into a swampy muddy mess whenever it rains, all of the dividing walls and the brick watering station with the faucet are now covered with moss, algae or whatever this nasty, slimy, green sludge is, the first neighbour’s garage is now flooded and all of this because we have no gutters to manage the water!
We urgently need around 540 euros to purchase the gutters so that life can get back to normal again. I simply can’t borrow any more money right now, I’m already in debt up to my eyeballs!
Every dime and nickel helps and time’s running out on summer.

The Shelter of Sasha Pejčić
May 2013 – GREAT NEWS UPDATE –
Under the section / Tab – ‘Shelters’ at the top of our site, we recently provided a Care2 link regarding Sasha, the Serbian man who has been rescuing stray dogs for years, and who very recently was in dire straits in helping them all; simply feeding them for a start.
Our article (which you can still see under ‘Shelters’ stated:
Subject: This Man is Running Out of Food to Feed 400 Rescued Dogs
Link:

Written by Jovana Ivastanin
Sasha Pejčić is a rare kind of man who has been rescuing dogs in Nis, Serbia for years.
His animal shelter is absolutely breathtaking. The dogs all follow Sasha around and it’s amazing to watch their interaction with each other. They all eat together peacefully, play, run and sleep together.
Most of the dogs have been taken off of the streets and nursed back to health (as well as spayed and neutered) and now live in a large pack in a disused riding school. At night they sleep in stables in groups of about 15.
However, Sasha is now facing a major crisis over how to feed these dogs.
The Austrian organization that was supporting him is no longer able to cope with all the financial needs and the dogs did not eat for two days recently. Sasha has now run out of food totally. His four workers who help with the feeding and cleaning have not been paid since the New Year and the rent hasn’t been paid for four months.
Well now (16/05) we have some brilliant news !
Have you heard the news?
Thanks to the amazing Harmony Fund supporters across the planet, 400 dogs living at this cage-free oasis in Serbia are now safe.
Last month, they couldn’t eat for two days due to a financial crisis that gripped the shelter, but with your donations, we sent the first $10,500 this week and another $12,000 will go over to Serbia in June. After that, we’ll be helping on an ongoing basis with a couple thousand dollars a month for the long term to buy food, veterinary care, electricity and worker’s wages to make sure that the dogs here never go hungry again.
The shelter’s founder Sasha does not speak any English, so the news was given to him by translator. It’s heartwarming to see this stoic man who has become so accustomed to suffering try to hold back his emotion as he receives word that the dogs will not go without food ever again.
At the very end of this video clip, Sasha has just a few simple words to express how he feels.
You can watch it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzaaNNeS6vg&feature=youtu.be
Be sure to stay in touch with us at www.HarmonyFund.org
Bless you all for making this dream come true – and also thanks to all from SAV.

His four workers who help with the feeding and cleaning have not been paid since the New Year and the rent hasn’t been paid for four months.
How the Shelter Was Born
Over the years, Sasha has witnessed so much suffering amongst the Serbian dogs and it has affected him deeply. Ever since he can remember, he always felt sorry for little puppies and would always try and feed them whenever he saw them. It was in 2008 that he really started to notice that many of dogs he was trying to help were disappearing – what he realized was that the Nis pound was killing more and more dogs daily as a way of ‘managing’ the population.
Sasha would often notice that his friends, the street dogs he fed on regular basis, would suddenly go missing. They were being caught by the dog catchers and murdered (the methods used to ‘euthanize’ dogs are unspeakable).
One day, Sasha found four puppies near a very busy street and he moved them somewhere safer as he was so scared they would be killed and he began feeding them in that safer place. A few days later, he found another eight puppies on the way to feeding the first four. He bought them a couple of dog houses for shelter and came back every day to feed and water them. People noticed this and started to drop off more and more puppies. In no time, there were 70 of them. Sasha managed to finance all of this on his own as he was working full time. If he was ever short due to an illness of the pups or something similar, he’d turn to friends and family for help and they’d lend him the needed money for the treatment.
Sasha managed to find a disused riding school that he could rent and the owner agreed he could keep dogs there. A homeless man, Zoran, noticed him feeding the puppies and started to help. Since Sasha was working, he offered Zoran a part time job so that he could look after the weaker puppies while Sasha was at work. Together, they started to help the really sick and injured dogs. Sasha would nurse them back to health and bring them to the ‘shelter’ Zoran and he had started building. When he first rented the disused riding school, it was overgrown and the roof of the stable was in a bad way. With the help of friends, family and a lot of hard work, Sasha and Zoran transformed it into the shelter that it is today.
Years later, Sasha is now responsible for more than 400 dogs who he has rescued. Several of them came in via a former humane organization who rescued dogs from the pound as they were being spayed but not stitched up properly after surgery before being put back on the street, which led to a terrible end for so many dogs. Some of the dogs have been left outside the gates, but Sasha is not actively rescuing more dogs now as he has reached full capacity. Sasha cannot manage on his own and he has some workers who come and help him (Zoran is one of them still).
As there are 400 dogs to be fed, the food bill is now very high. To start off with, Sasha could buy the food but as the numbers grew, he depended on donations from local abattoir and bakeries. This was a great solution for a while, but eventually they couldn’t keep up with the amount of food that Sasha needed for his ever-expanding pack.
To feed the dogs every day, Sasha needs between 100 and 120 kg worth of kibble. The cheapest kibble available in Serbia (dog food is a novelty, most people feed their dog stale bred dunked in their own leftovers) it is about Euro 16.4 ($21 US dollars) for a 20kg bag. The shelter mixes meat, dry food and donated bakery goods at a total of Euro 3,600 a month. A couple of years ago, he managed to find an organization in Austria who started to help him, but sadly this year they have not been able to cover all the costs and for the first time since Sasha has rescued his dogs, they have no food.
Here’s What’s Being Done to Help Feed the Dogs
While volunteers try to begin networking on Facebook to build a base of supporters to help with regular contributions, the Harmony Fund is offering to help raise immediate funds to feed the dogs as well as to pay the rent, the veterinary costs and the workers’ wages.

Below – The Major Roof Repairs
7/7/14 – We have had the following news in from Danica at Shelter ‘Felix’.
Please remember that so much update and construction work has been undertaken at the shelter – work which is simply there to provide safe sanctuary for all the cats who once lived on the streets, along with all all the dangers that came with this. Now they have a forever home; but unless funds can be raised for extra work which has had to be completed on the roof; things are in more danger.
At the end of this post you will see some pictures of little ‘Shadow’, who was saved from the market and who has now been restored to a beautiful little cat at Felix shelter.
We know there are appeals all the time for different projects and issues, but it is essential that in order to continue with a forever home for Shadow and the others, the extra funds are raised for the work which has had to be undertaken.
So please, give anything that you can to help Danica and the cats survive this situation.
Look at the photos of little Shadow below – is that not a good enough reason the give a donation ???
Thank you – SAV.

Serious Problems with the Roof Replacement
Why doesn’t anything ever go easily?
As you already know, the massive renovation work at Cat Shelter Felix has finally started as of a couple of weeks ago. We kept silent as long as we could, wishing to pleasantly surprise all of our friends and supporters with good news on the shelter’s repair progress. Everything seemed to be going along well, just as it should; workers had finished building the four small dividing walls between the support columns, removed the old roofing, lifted the new roof beams, made the entire wooden frame, our hearts were already singing with joy, but then…
To our incredible disappointment, it suddenly and unexpectedly turned out that we have about one meter of empty space between the top of the walls and the roof beams, through which all of the kitties can easily climb up to the attic and make it all the way through to the section under the roof of the main building. Once they’re there, the whole wide world is theirs; they’ll have dozens of ways to escape and happily wander the neighborhood and curious as they are, they simply wouldn’t be able to resist the challenge. Our happy optimism turned into utter despair in an instant. We could all just sit down and cry.
Although we knew there would be some gap (the pitch of the roof has changed due to the extended roof overhang that protects the walkway), no one could’ve imagined, not in their worst nightmare, how big it would turn out to be! Evidently, the problem is that the walls of the cat’s rooms (and the walls of all of the buildings on this property) are made of rammed earth, some reed and some random bricks, so they were literally crumbling while the workers were lifting the beams and this enormous gap is the result.
All of the cats from the backyard are now enclosed with tarps in a sort of improvised shelter between the side entrance to the yard and the biggest of their rooms, as the top wire mesh (chain linked fence) had to be temporarily lifted. Unfortunately all felines are escape artists and it will be literally impossible to keep them from making their way out of such a weak enclosure for an extended period of time. The only thing we can do is to fill the empty space above the walls and under the roof beams with wooden cladding, if we miraculously succeed in raising the funds to purchase all of the necessary materials – until then, we can’t dream of releasing the kitties back into the yard! We can’t use bricks or any heavy material for that purpose because the existing structure, even strengthened, wouldn’t be able to bear the additional weight and everything will just come crashing down.
The old roof was in such terrible shape that it’s really surprising and a true miracle that it didn’t fall in on the cats a long time ago. Parts of the new roof that have been done so far look good and sturdy, but the mere thought of that gap, that big gap is like a dark cloud over our heads. At the moment, we have absolutely no solution to this problem. The kitties are already nervous because they’re accustomed to having plenty of open space and all of them are definately not impressed with this restricted area they’re now forced to live in. While they’re constantly trying to escape back into the yard, which the most skillful ones have already done a couple of times, (catching them wasn’t an easy task and no fun at all), workers are beginning to install the tiles. The insulation layer or more precisely the foil insulation is already in place (we’ll also have to put wooden cladding over the oblique roof beams to protect the insulation layer from tearing) and in just a few days we’ll have a new roof above the kitties’ rooms. A new roof and a huge gap underneath.
As if all of this is not enough, new problems arose. The portion of the roof that’s being replaced right now is higher than parts of the old roof that will remain in place, because the pitch of the new one has changed. At the end, if we don’t put two triangular wooden gables between the edges of the dual-pitched roof, nothing on Earth will prevent the kitties from having a promenade all over the roof. One wooden gable should be made above the door between the two parts of the yard, so the kitties won’t be able to cross from one part of the yard to another over the door as they please. The other one is necessary to stop them from escaping through the gap between the new roof and the old roof of their biggest room in the backyard, which is made of sheet metal and tiles but is much lower than the new one.
The only good thing is that if we by some incredible luck manage to raise 2.300 euros needed to purchase the timber cladding, fill the gaps and thus ensure no cats could escape, all of them will have more space on the roof than they have ever had before. Their paradise will finally be a real paradise. But until then, this is a complete disaster.
How long will we be able to keep the kitties in that improvised shelter, when they are incessantly trying to break out? They’ve hated it from the second they were rounded up and forced to be in there. What will happen when they succeed and start fleeing in all directions? I’ve already caught at least a dozen of them who have breached what we naively believed would be only a temporary enclosure and I was forced to use a humane trap for the least approachable and most insolent. Not one of them will step into the humane trap again, that’s for sure, and if they escape just one more time, there would be nothing I can do but to wait for the runaways to find their way back home, which they hopefully will, at one point…
If we fail to raise around 2.300 euros as soon as possible, there’s a huge chance our long struggle won’t end well for the 117 shelter kitties. Workers will finish their job and go away and then what? Is it even possible to raise this kind of money on such short notice? Is there anyone out there who believes it’s worth a try? Many questions, and the answers are sadly nowhere in sight.
I’m totally aware summer is a bad time for fundraising, with holidays, etc, I know people are strapped for cash. The sum of money we need is huge and even more importantly, it’s for shelter repairs, not for saving a few mangled and abused animals, each of them with a sad story and heartbreaking graphic photos. But what we’re trying to do is to ensure a good, secure life for a three-digit number of kitties! Is it not a vital and worthy mission? It’s also a very time sensitive emergency so please, help us with whatever you can afford and share our plight! Every little bit helps as all donations add up and ensure a bright future for these lovely creatures! Our kitties have no one but us, and we all have no one but you!

Many of you will remember the recent post that we did regarding little ‘Shadow’; the kitten saved from death by Danica. See our recent post at:
Well now Danica has sent us some new photos of little Shadow, and we want to share them with you.
Danica has sent us the following message:
Thank you so much for posting the videos of our little Shadow 🙂
She was such a sad little critter when I picked her up at the beginning of June from the flea market where she somehow appeared a few days earlier. Oblivious and uncaring people at the market had been kicking her and stomping on her for hours, until one of the sellers scooped her up and hid her under their stall. She had obviously been away from her Mom for a while; she was scared, emaciated, painfully skinny and didn’t even eat solid food yet.
But she is an incredible fighter and managed to pull through a major crisis, beating all odds.
She is healthy and happy now, playing with her best friend Tinker Bell (which I took from a pet seller at that same flea market a month earlier, after a pretty heated argument and a call to the Communal Inspection) and both of them will undoubtedly be spoilt rotten 🙂
I’m sending you a few pictures of Shadow, some of which were taken when she arrived at the shelter and the others were taken a few days ago. Our friend Kim named her Shadow as she was just a thin little wisp of black when I took her in.

Here is the latest (June 2014) messge from Danica regarding the latest news from Cat Shelter Felix.
There have been huge updates and repairs undertaken at the shelter, and it has still not finished as you can see from some of the photographs below. Once all the repair work has been completed; it will mean that this dedicated shelter will be able to provide a life long home for at least 117 little living beings who once existed on the streets.
If you are able to provide anything to help with the costs of repairs; or wish to support the shelter in many diffeent ways; please make your selection from the links following:

Let the Pandemonium Begin!
Last autumn, when we happily received an incredibly generous donation which would enable us to cover the costs of replacing the roof of the auxiliary cats’ rooms, we couldn’t have dreamt it would take us so long to even begin with the new and hopefully final round of shelter repairs. No construction companies were willing to start the massive repair work back in rainy September and we had no other choice but to reluctantly hold up, cross our fingers and wait for spring. A long, frigid, snowy winter arrived and left again, followed by the unrelenting rain of an unpromising spring, and now after a couple of stressful and hectic months it’s finally time to get shelter repairs underway again.
Many things have happened in the meantime, we sadly lost some of the oldest and sickest kitties in spite of trying to help them the best we could and doing everything that could have possibly be done. A few new sad, unfortunate and desperate furry ones arrived, and the time has passed almost unnoticeably. And yet for the last couple of weeks we’ve been anxiously preparing for the biggest challenge since the shelter was founded, quietly and with no fuss, impatiently waiting for the weather to stabilize, with huge expectations and hope in our hearts. Although it’s just the beginning of summer, the temperatures are already skyrocketing but more importantly, the sky is finally clear and blue and our long agonizing wait seems to be over. Let the show begin!
The existing supporting structure wouldn’t stand a chance to bear the weight of the roof, so we had to build five strong support columns last autumn even though we haven’t managed to finish them completely. A new concrete path between the front entrance into the backyard and garage was also made, instead of the old deteriorated path composed of soil, cracked concrete and decaying paving tiles. The entire path would turn into a muddy mess whenever it rained, so the cats that were coming and going out of their rooms were stepping directly into the mud. We’re planning to extend the roof overhang in order to protect the new path below from precipitation, but that’s not all. Construction workers are currently building four small dividing walls between the support columns which are supposed to help keep the new path dry, whatever the weather throws at us, and it also provides the kitties with some additional sheltered space which is so necessary during the winter months.
As always, funds are the persistent problem and even more so because of the unexpected expenses of treating several seriously ill kitties; thus we found ourselves in a paradoxical situation of undertaking costly shelter repairs without trying to raise funds for the above. But some things simply can’t wait if we are ever going to make the shelter into a livable and secure place for its 117 furry residents, so we are running into debts and huge ones again, that we can’t dream of paying off on our own. Long story short, the cost of the roof replacement itself has been covered by last year’s huge donation, but nothing else has been and there’s a lot of work yet to be done while the weather’s nice.
No matter how hard we try not to endlessly bore you with countless appeals for help and find the way to do what we have to do without begging around, we have no chance to finish such massive repair work unless our friends and supporters all step up. Anything that you’re able to give makes a huge difference and means the world and life itself for a three-digit number of once abused and sadly forgotten little creatures! Even the smallest donations add up and help their safe haven be what it’s meant to be!
We are all eternally thankful from the bottom of our hearts to each and every one of you who’ve been supporting our work for years and never failed us in our times of need. If we all pull together, we can finish up this shelter once and for all and give these kitties the safe and happy home they so much deserve!

We have some very sad news to tell you today – little ‘Archi’; one of the well known and very much loved little kitties who was given a home at shelter Felix, has passed over the rainbow bridge.
Danica has written a very moving account of little Archi, and you can read it by clicking on the following link:
http://novisadcats.blogspot.com/2013/10/another-angel-has-gotten-his-wings_25.html
Little Archi, in his all too very short life, became a very prominent symbol for all the excellent work being undertaken by Danica in working to help stray cats and kitties in Serbia.
You may have seen Archi’s ‘rascal face’ being used quite frequently on this SAV site.
He also became even more of a star when he was used as one of the ‘Felix shelter’ 2012 Christmas card kitties used on the KAALE website – http://www.kaale.org.uk/files/Downloads/Card%202%20Xmas%202012.pdf
To see the others, go to http://www.kaale.org.uk/ – the ‘Links’ and then ‘Xmas cards 2012’.
With Winter just around the corner, it is essential that the shelter is able to provide continual heat and warmth for all the kitties living at the shelter. Four gas bottles, each costing 1,300 Euros are required to ensure that the animals stay warm and healthy this winter.
If you are able to give something in memory of little rascal Archi then please go to the following and then click on ‘Ready to help – Donate Now’ on the left hand side.
Please give anything that you can – it all helps, no matter how small a donation.
Here we will leave you with some wonderful pictures of little Archi who was given everything he needed by Danica at the shelter – LOVE, WARMTH and REGULAR FOOD.
And for a little stray who started life on the streets of Serbia, that meant the world.
RIP Archi – you were, and are still a star !
You know, there are many days; every day; when you sometimes question if what you try to do is worth anything. You go from animal suffering in Serbia, to animal abuse in Romania, and then move on to animal suffering in Bosnia as we will see a decision on maybe today (28/10). Animal suffering is a global issue and it is something that needs to be rectified now, today.
When you feel low and think that maybe you are not getting anywhere with your campaigns; you just have to look at the face of little Archi; rescued by Danica and provided with so much love, care and attention; and then you are given the much needed lift to continue to fight for what IS right – for ending animal suffering around the globe.
The passing of rascal Archi has really affected us here at SAV today; but we gather strength from this little guy who has now given us even greater strength to work harder and campaign even harder for justice and for what we know is right – that all animals be treated with respect and compassion.
Archi, you were, and still are, a star shining bright !
Hi all;
Here below you will find the latest (September) information from Danica at shelter ‘Felix’ in Serbia, which provides a forever home to cats which originally endured a life on the streets as strays. This is a message of hope and generosity, and it proves that despite all the animal abuse stories which we unfortunately attempt to inform people about – good people, better people, there are sometimes silver linings to dreams – and this is one such (in the words of Danica) “futile and hopeless” situation which now, via a more than kind donation by a supporter, somewhere (who wishes to remain anonymous) – the entire rof at the shelter can now be replaced. Now the cats will have somewhere safe and warm to spend their winter this year.
We cannot thank the generosity of this anonymous donor enough in bringing the shelter back from the brink, as you will see in Danica’s letter below. So a massive ‘Thank You’ to whoever the good Samaritan is, someone who has literally saved so many lives.
I love the statement by Danica at the end of her message:
“‘It’s impossible’, said pride. ‘It’s risky’, said experience. ‘It’s pointless’, said reason.
‘Give it a try’, whispered the heart.”
Even if you have tried and your work brings you back no dividends, you have given ‘it’ a try – and that is the main thing.
Remember the words of Edmund Burke – “Evil Flourishes When Good Men Do Nothing?”
Enjoy Danica’s message of hope and very good people;
Mark – SAV Founder.

Frankly, a couple of weeks ago, when we published our latest update on the shelter repairs desperately pleading for help, things were bad to say the least and the overall situation seemed rather futile and hopeless. With 117 living beings to take care of every single day, with many sick kitties in need of vet care, medicine, special food, with a pile of unpaid bills and living under the shadow of the constant threat of the roof caving in, we literally hit the wall and there were no solutions to our problems anywhere in sight. We were already giving up hope that the horribly damaged roof of the auxiliary cat rooms would be replaced before the onset of winter, as raising the $4,000 needed for the roof replacement sounded like science fiction, no matter what we tried.
When nothing goes as planned, I guess that people inevitably begin to question themselves.
Did we bite off more than we could chew? Is the idea of maintaining a cat sanctuary in Serbia totally unrealistic?
What are we doing wrong? Is there a point to posting yet another appeal for help if dozens of similar ones have passed almost unnoticed?
Watching all of the shelter kitties lying around, carefree and relaxed, blissfully oblivious to the dangers ahead was truly heartbreaking. Lulled into a false sense of security in their home, they had no idea that their fairytale existence could be cut short at any time and I somehow felt I had betrayed them, offering and promising them safety I obviously could not provide. I’ve been at my wit’s end for months now trying to find a way to get all of the kitties plus the shelter through another winter unharmed, but time was running short and each new day was just bringing bigger worries…
And then, when things were at their darkest and there was almost no hope left, a gift of incredible kindness and generosity from the other end of the world restored my faith in humanity. I’m thrilled to share the best news ever, the news that stunned me and left me breathless – a wonderful lady who wishes to remain anonymous sent us the entire amount of money needed to replace the roof!
The massive repairs will begin as soon as the weather permits and with a little luck, all of the Felix kitties will be warm and dry this winter!
They will still need food and vet care, and we’ll have to raise funds to buy gas for central heating, but our new roof, once finished, will certainly be able to bear the weight of snow and endure the upcoming winter and many more winters ahead. What a huge relief!
There are no words to express our immense gratitude to this wonderful lifesaver of the Felix kitties, but also to all of our supporters who appreciate our work, share our appeals for help, contribute with their donations whenever they can and caringly show they believe in us! A huge thank you to all of you who are helping our dreams become a reality!
It takes a village to make a difference, I know, but with true friends like you, the sky is the limit!
And yes, we might be dreamers, but dreamers of a better future!
“‘It’s impossible’, said pride. ‘It’s risky’, said experience. ‘It’s pointless’, said reason.
‘Give it a try’, whispered the heart. “
If you can give anything in the way of a donation to help with food or veterinary costs it will be very much appreciated.

Everything is looking so good now, and the work on the shelter has been endless and expensive. As Danica says, many of the cats are also sick with a virus and so veterinarian costs are also having to be found.

Between Hope and Fear
The time has come and we’re now finally about to face our biggest challenge yet – the roof replacement! Thanks to a couple of generous donations, we have enough money to start the most important phase of the shelter repairs, although it’s still uncertain how we’ll finish it. Everything else aside, if we manage to replace the roof of the auxiliary rooms before the cold weather sets in, it would be the jewel of our efforts and your success as well!
Since the beginning of year, we’ve fixed three of the cats’ rooms, thanks to a grant for shelter repairs we received last winter. The weather wasn’t really on our side during the spring, so the indoor work was all that could be done. Considering that shelter repairs have been ongoing for more than a year now and that we’ve faced a myriad of unexpected problems so far, the possibility of reaching the final goal sounds both thrilling and scary. If we fail, everything will seem pointless. But if we succeed?
The biggest problem is that there are 117 kitties here that need to be taken care of while repairing the roof. Running a cat shelter has never been an easy task, but frankly, it’s now becoming harder than ever. Many cats are sick with viruses and needing daily treatment; all of the shelter tenants have to be vaccinated against rabies as soon as they’re able to withstand the vaccination; providing all of the cats with adequate food according to their age and health, plus necessary vet care costs a fortune! We’re regularly not facing just one problem but several of them simultaneously, including major shelter repairs on top of everything else. Nothing of this would’ve been possible without your help and the plain and simple truth is that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something…
While raising funds for the roof replacement, we couldn’t just sit idle, as there were plenty of minor issues that needed to be addressed. Fixing the hydrophore tank, placing new water pipes through the backyard and building new faucets are finally finished and an adequate water supply outside is ensured. Judging by the cats’ behaviour, a new water faucet in the backyard was indispensable and one might wonder how did they ever live without it. Most of the kitties spend their time sitting on it, guarding it, climbing on it, drinking from it, it seems they consider it to be the best toy ever.
The roof replacement will be costly, but before we even begin, a new concrete path between the front entrance into the backyard and garage has to be made and new columns need to be put in place in order to support the roof. The old path quickly turns into a muddy mess when it rains, so the cats that come out of the cat rooms step directly into the mud. Most importantly, the existing supporting structure is simply not able to bear the weight of the new roof as it’s as old as the hills and wasn’t even constructed properly in the first place. The roof overhang also needs to be extended in order to increase the base of support for the new roof and to protect the new path (and thus the entrances to the cats’ rooms) below from the rain run-off. The larger the area the base of support covers, the more stable our new roof will be. Only then we can start replacing the roof that was made 50 years ago and has not been touched since.
I know that there are far too many animal shelters and sanctuaries in need of help and zillions of homeless animals everywhere but would you please consider donating towards the roof repairs at Felix shelter? Once that our biggest problem is solved and the new roof is in place, we can rest easier and all of our efforts and sacrifices will finally make sense. The greatest gift is a secure future, a safe and happy life and it’s in your hands!
All of you know that Cat Shelter Felix is not just a shelter, it’s also the only cat sanctuary in Serbia, a unique cat haven with plenty of open spaces where all of the rescued cats are provided with a lifetime of care in a cage-free environment. As none of the cats are, nor will be, put up for adoption, this is the only home they will ever have.
Please, help the Felix kitties face the coming winter without worrying that the roof will collapse in on them! It all comes down to love and it all depends on you!

Shelter Felix is run by our friend Danica.
Winter 2012 /13 – Serious problems with a damaged shelter
We’ve been repairing the shelter since last spring, but in spite of our best efforts the repairs are far from being finished. Instead of replacing the entire roof of the main building (which would have been a very costly, but only permanent solution), we managed to install additional supports and strengthen the roof as much as we could. Had this winter been as snowy as the last one, the roof would’ve surely collapsed under the snow load. It must be replaced this year at any cost, as it can’t possibly endure another winter. Moreover, we didn’t even touch the roof of the auxiliary rooms in the backyard. The entire structure is worn out and some of the roof rafters and beams are cracked and half-rotten. The old roof tiles, partially covered in moss, are moving and sagging and with the melting snow and heavy rains, water has started making it’s way in. What would have happened had the precipitation been more abundant, I dare not imagine.
As to the auxiliary rooms themselves, they have originally been made of bricks and rammed earth. If we want to fix them permanently, special nets should be adhered to the inner walls and Bavalit applied afterwards. Bavalit is a kind of mortar, a mixture of hydraulic binders, mineral aggregates and additives. Then the new insulation layer can be added to the ceiling and we would have a nice and safe indoor enclosure. The only cat room in the front yard is in the worst shape, with a huge bump in the ceiling caused by moisture, and a number of cracks in the walls. If enough of the ceiling gets wet, it will become too heavy to support itself and will collapse on my unsuspecting cats! We have to fix it ASAP!
The outdoor enclosure is another matter. The perimeter of the whole yard and the roof should be enclosed with some fencing with a stronger, but finer mesh. The existing fence is too weak and is actually chain-link fencing with links that are too large to prevent little kittens and skinnier adults from escaping through the wire. Although there wasn’t as much snow this winter, the wire mesh dangerously sagged at one point, as it was already droopy after it barely help up through the last year’s winter. Another heavy snow load would have knocked it down. We’ve been lucky so far, but who can guarantee we will be equally lucky next winter? I won’t even mention that paved paths through the yard should also be made…
Another big problem is the outdoor fence. The posts had already started to deteriorate and crumble. They became wobbly last year, and this year’s snow and ice further degraded them and caused extensive additional damage. Not only that, the gates can’t close properly. These rotten posts will fall apart and cause the whole fence to fall down any day now. It’s not an exaggeration, it’s an inevitable reality and a dire emergency!
Please, help us! We’re overwhelmed and doing everything we can, but we just can’t do it without your help! The need is great, but no amount is too small. Thank you in advance for anything you may be able to provide!

Thank You – SAV.
Felix – 23rd May 2013.
Here is the latest update from Danica about the situation at Cat Shelter Felix.
As you can read, the repair work is just ongoing, and so donations towards helping with the costs are always welcome.
If you would like to donate, then please go to the links at the end of the latest news from Danica.
This year’s round of shelter repairs is currently well underway. Paving of the sheltered area under the eaves is finally finished and we’ve already undertaken our next challenge – fixing the only cat room in the front yard. Not until the workers began to rip out the ceiling were we aware of its true condition and the real reason why that huge bump had formed in it months ago. The old saying “You never know what lies beneath” takes on a whole new meaning during repairs at Felix shelter.
Like all of the other auxiliary rooms, the one in question has originally been made of reeds and rammed earth, with random bricks scattered here and there. The ceiling sagged down because the roof was leaking water and not only that, the rammed earth and reeds became wet and heavy, which has caused one of the beams carrying the weight of the roof to frighteningly bend down in the middle. That particular beam lies on top of the walls and supports the structural roof beams so it can’t be replaced, as the entire structure would fall down otherwise.
Nevertheless, it can stay as it is without causing any additional problems. OSB sheathing has already been placed above, and an insulating layer of Styrofoam will be attached beneath. After that, special nets will be adhered to both the inner walls and the ceiling and Bavalit, which is a kind of mortar, will be applied afterwards. New electrical installations of cables, plugs and wall sockets will replace the old ones and the best news is that all of the costs of renovating that room in the front yard are covered. Unfortunately, this is just the beginning…
The biggest problem is the roof of the auxiliary rooms itself – half-rotten and cracked in places, it must be replaced entirely, not a single part of it is worth saving. The only cat room in good shape is the last and the biggest one in the backyard, as it was built out of normal building materials just before I moved in a few years ago, so it’s still quite new. Raising enough money to replace the roof sounds like science fiction at the moment, but if we miraculously succeed, there will be plenty of hard work ahead. Additional layers of bricks will be added onto the existing walls and after that, the wooden frame will be placed on top of the bricks to allow the concrete to be poured into it. Once the concrete frame is finished, it will be ready to carry the new roofing. Roof beams and rafters will be set in place to make a new roof structure, which will then be covered with an insulation layer and the final step will be putting up new roof tiles. With this new roofing, all of the auxiliary rooms will be ready for next winter.
However, if the lack of funds prevents us from accomplishing what we have planned, Felix kitties will be facing an extremely uncertain future. We can try and put a nylon cover under the old roof that is already leaking in multiple places, hoping that the water won’t continue soaking the ceilings of the auxiliary rooms, but this patched up roof can’t reasonably be expected to endure another snow. The longer we wait, the greater the risk we run that this rotten roofing will collapse in on the cats and everything will fall apart. It’s been said a long time ago that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…
Please, help us if you possibly can! Felix kitties look pampered and happy, without a care in the world, but their lives will change dramatically if the roof above the rooms they eat and sleep in caves in. Some of them are very old or chronically ill, while others are very young, they have all been through a lot before they arrived here, and now the question is just how many hardships these delicate, brave little creatures can endure in their lifetime. After all of the misery, fear, violence and hopelessness they were forced to experience, they have found their safe haven that gave their lives a completely new dimension. It would be so unfair to let anything shatter their hope again…
Together, we can make their fairy tale last! Every little bit helps!

Here below is the new update from Danica regarding this last winter at shelter Felix.
As you can read; several young animals are very poorly and in need of veterinary treatment, which is costing a lot ! There is also the need for constant funds to keep the gas bottles loaded up so that they can supply warmth to the animals at the shelter.
If you can help with a donation, no matter how small or large, please do it and help the animals at shelter Felix.

Danica writes as follows:
These last few weeks have been nothing less than hectic. After a somewhat balmy start to this winter, a cold spell and snowstorms swept through Serbia and blizzards wreaked havoc at the beginning of February. Many vehicles were snowed in, the roads were blocked and had been rendered impassable by blasting snow and powerful winds, so a state of emergency was declared. Military helicopters were deployed to rescue travelers that had gotten stuck in drifts. The army, police, firefighters and rescue teams were all in the field, the border with Hungary was closed while the Felix kitties, cozily tucked in their rooms, were awaiting nicer weather in their snowed-in home, cut off from the world by snowfall…
Real winter came briefly and went away again, a few days of spring-like weather followed just to be replaced by rain, but as long as there’s no new snow, we have nothing to moan about. Hopefully March won’t bring some unpleasant surprises but one can never know… Central heating is on, thanks to the tremendous generosity of our friends and supporters – we managed to fill our gas tank for the second time this winter a couple of weeks ago and not a minute too soon, as there was almost no fuel left when the gas delivery truck pulled into the shelter at last. Unfortunately, the health conditions of the most delicate, oldest and chronically ill kitties are a completely different story.
Joca’s eye injury was the first in a series of serious problems and started with a scratch on the cornea that quickly evolved into a corneal ulcer and he had to undergo eye surgery, using a third eyelid flap. The third eyelid was actually sewn shut over the eye to protect the cornea and promote healing, which was done in an attempt to save his eye and avoid enucleation. When the sutures were removed, it turned out that not only has his eye has been saved, but there’s vision in that eye as well! Joca is living in the house at the moment, cuddly and sweet as always, he is still under treatment but the worst has thankfully passed.
The next to fall sick was Shalimar, my recently rescued Siamese. Found in terrible shape, he was bouncing back entirely too slowly and seemed to be nervous and uneasy whenever I tried to pick him up. It seemed kind of odd until it was discovered that the two huge scabs I found on his body were in fact two large abscesses. The vet said he probably got injured some time ago but his abscesses were passing unnoticed until they fully matured and were practically ready to burst. A lot of pus came out of them after squeezing, they were drained, cleaned and debrided. The skin was stitched and gauze sutured into both wounds to keep them sterile and to facilitate drainage, without using drainage tubes. His stitches were removed a few days ago and both of his wounds are healing nicely. One less thing to worry about…
But the biggest problems were yet to come. Out of five kitties that are facing serious health issues right now, four are the members of the squad I initially brought to the shelter when we moved here and although I knew this winter would be stressful, this is entirely too much! Kmeca has a number of life-threatening health conditions: a dangerous renal papillary necrosis, kidney stones, sand, liver and duct bile problems, a wound of her tongue, some viral disease, inflamed gums, an unidentified mass in her colon… She is bone skinny, with seriously compromised kidney function and anything could happen at any moment. Frca is heartbreakingly weak as well and it is suspected she has a pancreatic disease, but although she is being given medicine and special food, things don’t look very promising. We’re taking it one day at a time as it’s all we can do with both of those fragile beauties.
Marka and Kus Kus, a couple of oldies but goodies are struggling with the usual difficulties of the elderly, more or less – Marka has some bone and joint problems of the elderly (which is not a surprise considering she is over 18) and refuses to eat when her condition is painful. Kus Kus is having gum problems again which is nothing new though, as it has been happening to him on and off for years now. After a major crisis he went through two years ago, he still hangs on, brave and dignified.
Njanja’s mysterious problem is still unsolved, mostly because he is not showing any other symptoms apart from being thin. It has been going on for months and there must be some underlying cause to his gaunt look but we haven’t yet succeeded in discovering what it is.
Circumstances have reached emergency level! Vet bills keep piling up, the special food costs a fortune and the fight for their lives has just begun. Please, consider donating whatever you possibly can to help these amazing felines recover!
Every donation, regardless of size, is of immense value and gratefully received as they all add up and really make a difference for these valiant furry fighters! On their behalf, thank you in advance!

Forgotten Dogs in Romania Waiting for Death
After the passing of the kill law dogs are waiting in freezing temperatures and hungry for death. Please Help! Share this Article.
Romania: After the passing of the kill law dogs are waiting in freezing temperatures and hungry for death.
Romania is drowned in snow up to 2 meters high, an icy wind blows across the land; in many places there is no getting through.
Trucks have to discontinue their journeys, because even the main roads into Bucarest are impassable.
Mobile networks are disrupted and the thing animal activists have dreaded since September 2013, has finally happened.
With the onset of winter at the beginning of this year the situation of the dogs has come to a head.
Since September of 2013, when Romania declared an all-out-war on strays, the animals have been hunted with unprecedented cruelty – being caught with wire nooses and taken to council “shelters”.
The „adoption law“, which legalises killing after 14 days, is, in reality, a kill law.
Not only is she short period of time allowed for adoption a mayor hurdle – it is also not very common in Romania to adopt street dogs and the councils arbitrarily make it difficult for people to adopt.
What this means for the dogs is difficult to imagine. They are being penned up: small and large dogs, old and sick dogs and pups.
In many of the council shelters the dogs waste away, without food and care, until they are, as recently happened in Craiova, beaten to death.
A third of the dogs incarcerated there were “euthanized” in this way over night (see image of cleaning up afterwards).
Many shelters were cut off from the world by the massive onset of winter, and contrary to those dogs in private shelter, where activists fight for every single life, these dogs were left to their fate.
It is beyond comprehension that this sort of thing is allowed to happen in an EU member state.
Unpunished and unhindered Romania violates every agreement concerning animal welfare and recommendations for sensible population control.
Animal activists are fighting a losing battle.
The volunteer, who have gained access to these “hell shelters”, to see how the dogs are faring and to try and help, suffer extreme emotional distress and will never forget what they see. Nevertheless they do not leave the dogs to their fate.
The Romanian state shows its most ugly face in these days and the European community is silent and tolerates the mass murder of dogs.
A Romanian activist reports: it was noticed on Saturday already that the kennels at the council shelter of Craiova were empty. And where, in the beginning, 6 to 8 dogs sat, only one or two remained.
Activists of the privately-run initiative SPERATNA PENTRU ANIMALE /Craiova went to the local shelter at Breasta on a daily basis in order to feed the dogs there (between 700 and 800!) with their own food – or else they would’ve had nothing to eat.
Due to bad snow fall they were FORBIDDEN to enter the shelter Breasta / Craiova for several days.
When the situation relaxed weatherwise, and they were allowed to return on Saturday, they found a third of the dogs gone.
Every day now the number of dogs diminishes. From yesterday to today another 100 dogs disappeared – they are killing them over night.
Many Romania and foreign activists and organisations are fighting for every soul and urgently need your help.
