Germany: A Look Back At Hunting Issues.

We at SAV have looked into German hunting issues quite a lot in the past. Many of the photographs in this particular post are from our own files; as undertaken by ‘D’ in Germany. Please read the excellent info from Venus in this post which is a current, personal feel.

At the end are several links to some of our main articles from the past. Sorry but many of the pictures are very bad – but that is the actual reality of hunting; and we make no apologies for showing animal abuse in such detail. Almost all of the following contain distressing photos, many of which are from ‘D’ – our German investigator – SAV:

The psychopaths who call themselves “hunters” in Germany are about 361,000. 0.4% of the population kill 5 million wild animals each year, creating a bloody reality in the forest, from which most people have no idea. 5 million animals every year – that is 13,700 every day, 570 per hour, almost ten animals per minute. Every six seconds, an animal is killed in Germany by the hands of a hunter.

The fox is the most hunted in Germany. In fact, there is no more a protection time for the fox.

600,000 foxes are shot in Germany every year! The three” hunters” reasons for this: rabies, fox-worm, exterminating important breeders (birds, etc ..) The rabies is eradicated and the probability of infecting by fox-worm t is far less than a 6 in the lottery. Foxes are not just carnivores, foxes eat everything. To this extent, foxes cannot eradicate any animal species.

But no one talks about animals that are endangered by extermination (lynx, wolf, badger …) for which the hunters alone are responsible.
So what are the real reasons for the fox hunt? From the various journals, we read: “Lust for reenactment and heritage,” “Waidmann’s joy to roll a fox in a shot-shot,” the “charm of the winter fox hunt” Hunting-Fever “and” Kick “, is what the hunter-psychopath experienced during the fatal shot. Our European neighbors Luxembourg is much more rational with the fox hunting. And forbade them. In Germany the huntsmen are composed of quite high strata. Lawyers, doctors, judges, city administration Officials are hunters.

It is no wonder that trials against hunters always fall into the hands of the hunters In Germany there is a saying: “who is rich or hunters is always in the right”! Our opponents in the fight against hunting are, therefore, rich, influential persons who are protected by politics. But the majority of the population is in Germany against hunting.

Our 14 dogs who don’t have any help for years have debt for their accommodation for October in amount of €550.

Please help us!

Free Fly isn’t organization. We are only 4 women who try to help innocent and abandoned animals.
We have over 25 animals as Free Fly and over 20 dogs or cats under care of each of us.

But these 14 dogs don’t have any help. We didn’t pay for October and November and our kennels and private accomodation ask from us to pay, but we don’t have how.
We desperately need your help.

Two things happened this week that will change the future of fox hunting in Scotland and, in turn, the rest of the UK. I wanted to share them with you because as a OneKind member, you’re helping make this happen.

On Sunday we released the horrific details as to how a fox had been killed by a Scottish hunt. On the 5th of November, a fox carcass was handed into Hessilhead Wildlife Hospital in Ayreshire. The fox had extensive injuries and Hessilhead were keen to establish the cause of death, so they contacted OneKind and we arranged for a post-mortem to be carried out by SAC Consulting Veterinary Services. As far as we know, this is the first time the carcass of a fox killed in this way has had a post mortem. This is what the pathologist concluded:

“The shotgun pellets appear to have missed the vital organs so in my opinion the shot was not instantly fatal and death will have been due to a combination of respiratory failure, blood loss and shock. This will have caused significant unnecessary suffering to the fox.”

For years the proponents of fox hunting have tried to claim that the death of a hunted fox is instantaneous. The fate of this poor animal shows what really happens, which is why we were delighted to see the story widely reported by the media, including the front page of the Times. You can read more about this horrific incident here.

The following day, the Scottish Government published a landmark review of the fox hunting ‘ban’. OneKind has long considered the ban unfit for purpose, and we are delighted that the review confirms this.
The review was carried out by Lord Bonomy and it is a comprehensive analysis that lays bare the failures of the law. Scottish hunts have continued their activities after the ban by claiming that they offer a pest control service, which is permitted by the Act. Lord Bonomy notes there is evidence that this is a “decoy” for the continuation of traditional hunting. He also suggests the fox we had post-mortemed was by no means unique. Approximately 160 foxes are killed by hounds in Scotland each year.

Lord Bonomy made many recommendations to improve the law. It’s now over to the Scottish Government to close the loopholes in the Act and end fox hunting, as the Scottish Parliament intended. This will mean implementing all of Lord Bonomy’s recommendations, and more.

Last Summer, when the SNP bravely announced that they would vote against weakening the Hunting Act in Westminster, Angus Robertson, the SNP leader in Westminster, and now deputy party leader said “We totally oppose foxhunting”. We will be working hard over the next year to make sure they deliver on this.

My office has no communication with the Mayor’s office in Gangneung and I was not aware this was an issue specific to them. After you brought this to my attention, my office has communicated your concerns to the local president of our Sister Cities Association. She relayed to me that while the two cities have been associated since 2003, there has been no designated representative from either city for the past two years and the partnership is considered “dormant” at this time. Once a relationship has been reestablished, your concerns and petition will be shared with the appropriate representative in Gangneung.

Hallo Rita,

am 26.11. findet erneut eine Drück-und Treibjagd zwischen Lampertheim-Hüttenfeld und Viernheim statt. Bei der letzten Jagd waren wohl 85 Personen an der Jagd beteiligt, dazu die Treiber.

Mehr als 80 Tiere, in erster Linie Wildschweine, aber auch Rehe und Füchse wurden

erschossen. Es musste wie immer eine Nachsuche durchgeführt werden, um Tiere die

sich dann schon über Stunden schwerverletzt gequält haben, den Gnadenschuß zu verpassen.

Dass die Jagd völlig unnötig ist, brauche ich sicher nicht zu erwähnen.

Um nun 2016 endlich mal etwas dagegen zu stellen, habe ich persönlich zwei Kundgebungen angemeldet. Am kommenden Samstag zwischen 10 und 12 Uhr direkt in Lampertheim, Sedanstrasse/Kaiserstrasse beim Wochenmarkt.

Wir haben ein Transparent und ein Plakat, sowie ein Megafon dabei.

Viel viel wichtiger ist es aber bei der Kundgebung Nummer 2 in möglichst großer Anzahl vor Ort zu sein. Diese ist angemeldet in Hüttenfeld, am Verkehrskreisel Ortausgang Richtung Viernheim und Lampertheim.

Zeitpunkt von 7 Uhr bis 17 Uhr. Die Jagd startet um 8 und soll um 16 Uhr enden.

Wenn wir hier eine Zahl plus 20 zusammen bekommen würden, kann man bereits über eine Störung der Jagd nachdenken, sind wir zu wenige, dann kann man auch hier die Kundgebung durchführen, gerne eigene Flugblätter verteilen, Auofahrer, die umgeleitet werden damit informieren usw.

Ich soll bis zum 25.11. ein Freitag der Ordnungsbehörde in Lampertheim mitteilen, mit wie vielen Personen man rechnen kann. Deshalb wäre es wichtig rechtzeitig Rückläufe von interessierten Personen zu bekommen, wobei selbst wenn sich viele ankündigen, würde ich der Behörde aus taktischen Gründen eine wesentlich niedere Zahl nennen. Grund: Sind es viele Leute, kommt auch viel Polizei, sind es wenige kommt eben nur ein Fahrzeug und dann haben wir die Möglichkeit die Jäger zu erreichen. Bitte sagt allen Leuten die kommen wollen, dass Sie sich der Witterung entsprechend kleiden sollen, Getränke und Essen mitbringen sollen und wenn möglich Fotoapparate, Filmkameras zur Dokumentation dabei haben sollten, so vorhanden.

Ich hoffe Ihr könnt kommen und bringt noch einige Aktivisten mit.

Die Duogynon-Opfer kämpfen noch heute gegen den Bayer-Konzern vor Gericht um eine gerechte Entschädigung.

Am Montag, den 28. November zeigt die ARD um 22:45 Uhr den Dokumentarfilm „Der vertuschte Skandal“, der am Mittwoch, den 30.11.2016, im Bayerischen Fernsehen ab 21:00 Uhr wiederholt wird.

Anlässlich dieses Dokumentarfilms demonstrieren die Duogynon-Opfer am 29.11.2016 in Berlin am Brandenburger Tor.

A New Snow Leopard Population Estimate Has Scientists on Edge

While some experts defend higher estimates of the elusive cat’s numbers, others say it’s bad science that could hurt the species.

A new estimate of the global population of snow leopards—a rare big cat thought to prowl about 1.2 million square miles of remote, rugged mountain terrain across 12 Central Asian nations—would appear to be an uncommon bit of good news for wildlife conservation.

Published last month in Snow Leopards, a 644-page compendium on snow leopard science and conservation, the estimate puts the global snow leopard population at 4,700 to 8,700 animals across 44 percent of the species’ range, compared with earlier projections of around 3,900 to 7,500 animals in total.

There was not enough information available to estimate how numerous the ghostly spotted leopards might be throughout their mountainous habitat, said Peter Zahler, the coordinator of the snow leopard program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, who coauthored the Snow Leopards chapter containing the population estimate. “As scientists, we know what we know, and we have not looked at the quality of those other areas—the other 56 percent,” he said.

Other experts say the available data don’t support the revised figure even across a subsection of the animal’s range, and they worry that it could create complacency among government officials and the public about curbing threats to the snow leopard’s survival.

Mongolia Approves Vast Reserve for Snow Leopards

“This will have a tremendous (negative) impact on snow leopard conservation throughout its range,” Som Ale, a biologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s cat specialist group, wrote in an email. “I envisage that [the] snow leopard would be listed as low priority and [a] low-funding species while the opposite is what is necessary.”

Ale, whose research and conservation work have focused on snow leopards in the Himalayas, is among the nearly 200 authors who contributed to Snow Leopards.

This disagreement among big-cat experts follows an unusually public controversy over the global tiger count. An upbeat report released during an April meeting of government officials from tiger range nations claimed a 20 percent increase in the species’ global population since 2010. But the announcement was criticized by tiger conservation organizations as a science-light publicity exercise.

Both disputes highlight the challenges of studying elusive big cats in their native habitats and how conscious all sides are of managing the public’s enthusiasm for saving them.

“To me the exciting part is—and it’s not a terribly complex story—is that there are more of these animals than we thought, and that is rare in these times,” said Zahler. “Tigers have lost over 90 percent of their population over 100 years, and lions have lost 40 percent in the last 20 years. The signs are pointing down fast. So it’s a piece of good news in the big-cat world where there hasn’t been much.”

The count was based on field data and observations shared in 2008 at a conference in Beijing attended by government officials, scientists, and conservationists. Improved technologies for assessing snow leopard populations, including more durable camera traps and satellite tracking collars, “have given us a better idea of what snow leopards’ home range is,” Zahler said. “The fact is, suddenly you could really track snow leopards—where they’re going and how far. At first there was no way to do it.”

Zahler and Tom McCarthy, the executive director of the snow leopard program for the conservation group Panthera and coeditor of Snow Leopards, both anticipated criticism of the revised population count.

“I know some people that will argue that ‘Well, we still do our camera trapping in only the best possible places, because we want to get good pictures of snow leopards,’ ” McCarthy said. “That might have been the case 10 years ago. But what we’re seeing now, particularly with Panthera—we’ve got five or six hundred cameras out in snow leopard range, and we don’t just target high-level population areas. We target a number of places where we’re not even sure snow leopards occur. So that argument doesn’t hold a lot of water.”

Gustaf Samelius, assistant scientific director of Snow Leopard Trust, lauded Snow Leopards as “a fantastic source of information put together” but said that the authors of the book’s population estimate chapter “have been a little uncritical at how they arrived at the numbers.”

While some of the data were gathered via tracking, camera trapping, or genetic sampling of snow leopard fecal samples, the studies are being conducted across too small an extent of the cat’s range to justify the higher population estimate, he said. The rest is still guesswork, even if it comes from people working on the ground in snow leopard range states.

“I teach a wildlife biology conservation class,” Samelius said. “We talk about estimating abundance a lot. I tell them, ‘We can land on the moon, but we have a very hard time estimating abundance of animals.’ ”

McCarthy agreed that with an animal as difficult to observe as the snow leopard, informed guesses continue to play a big part in estimating the size of the population. “I would not say that what we have still goes much beyond a guesstimate,” he said. “But the key takeaway here is [that] for once much more of the population figure was based on camera trapping, or genetic assessments, using fecal counts, sign surveys, rather than just more wild guessing.”

All the researchers agreed on at least one thing: With snow leopards facing multiple threats—including poaching of both the cats and their prey, retribution killings by herders for livestock losses, increased mining and road building in their habitats, and climate change—it would be a mistake to cut back on conservation efforts.

“It’s important to make sure it’s not lost that regardless of the total count of snow leopards, we know that there are some real threats out there, and they need to be dealt with,” said Zahler. “They are not going to go away without concerted effort.”

Our original award-winning ‘Dumb Animals’ poster and cinema advertising led to the exposure of the cruelty of the fur trade and prompted society’s rejection of fur wearing in the UK.

We now plan to launch a new global ‘fur for animals’ campaign using effective social media messaging to raise awareness that fur is cruel and buying fur perpetuates animal suffering.

We will work with the world’s TOP design and creative colleges and sponsor a global competition to produce a new ‘Dumb Animals’ campaign fit for the 21st Century. The world has changed since the first wave of anti-fur campaigns and so has the way and where fur is sold.

Two things happened this week that will change the future of fox hunting in Scotland and, in turn, the rest of the UK. I wanted to share them with you because as a OneKind member, you’re helping make this happen.

“The shotgun pellets appear to have missed the vital organs so in my opinion the shot was not instantly fatal and death will have been due to a combination of respiratory failure, blood loss and shock. This will have caused significant unnecessary suffering to the fox.”

Lord Bonomy made many recommendations to improve the law. It’s now over to the Scottish Government to close the loopholes in the Act and end fox hunting, as the Scottish Parliament intended. This will mean implementing all of Lord Bonomy’s recommendations, and more.
