Dear friends,

Thanks you for signing the Stop Donkey Misery in Nepal petition on Gopetition.com!

Last week we handed over the petition and more than 1000 signatures to the Ministry of Agriculture. It was the first time in the history of Nepal that the Ministry received a petition related to animal welfare. We believe the petition will have an impact, especially when we keep on lobbying and pressurising. For now we will close the petition.

You find more info about our work with abused donkeys on http://animalnepal.org/adoptadonkey.html

Thanking you for your support,

PRESS RELEASE

Over 1000 signatures to ‘Stop donkey misery in Nepal’ submitted to the Agriculture Ministry

Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) on May 19, 2009 handed over a petition signed by over a thousand people from all over the world to stop donkey abuse to the Joint Secretary at the Ministry for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dr Hari Dahal. The petition titled ‘Stop donkey misery in Nepal’ was signed by 1036 people from countries like Nepal, India, US, UK, Italy, Australia, France, Germany, Norway, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Netherlands, Belgium and others.

Pramada hands Over the Donkey Petition

The purpose of the signature campaign is to raise awareness to stop cruelty on working animals like donkeys. The petition demands concerned authorities and donkey owners to introduce a care system for these animals that suffer from malnutrition, open sores, lacerations, and general neglect.

Members of AWNN also urged the Joint Secretary to implement the Animal Transportation Act and wished to participate in drafting of the Animal Welfare Act. Mr Dahal was positive about these concerns and expressed commitment to take initiative on monitoring the execution of the Animal Transportation Act or the Pasu Dhuwani Mapdanda 2064. AWNN Chairperson Pramada Shah, after handing over the petition hoped that the ministry would cooperate in raising animal welfare issues and that the Animal Welfare Act would soon be drafted.

Established in 2008, AWNN is a network of six genuine animal welfare organisations that work to increase the effectiveness of animal welfare in the country. AWNN’s vision is to create a cruelty free society in which all creatures can live in peace.

Subject: Last chance to save Blaikiewell Animal Sanctuary. Please sign the petition before the 30th June 2009

Hello Everyone,

I know you are all busy and most of you have signed already, but would it be possible for you to forward our petition to your mailing list?  It has 1471 signatures at the moment but for it to make an impact at all we had hoped for a lot more.  We will have to send it to the Scottish First Minister at the end of June as we expect the results of the Public Enquiry to appear later in the Summer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Many thanks, and best wishes,

Mavis.

There are plans to build a Peripheral Route, with a dual carriageway running through our land.

Blaikiewell Animal Sanctuary stands to lose 20 acres and the road would have a devastating effect on the sanctuary and on the environment. There is a strong public feeling that the road is not necessary or in the wrong place and we await the finding of the Public Inquiry held last year, but even if the Reporter recommends that the road should not be built, the Scottish First Minister can overturn his decision. One of our neighbours, Liz Bracegirdle, has drawn up a petition to the Scottish Government.

We are hoping to get a huge number of signatures from all over the world and your help would be so gratefully appreciated.

To the many good people who have signed so far.
Please accept my sincere thanks.

Most of you I have never met but I will never forget any of you. I am overwhelmed by your support and it is a constant source of strength at this trying time.

Every good wish to you from all at Blaikiewell.

Egypt Killings: 22/05 Update – WARNING – Disturbing Video Footage

egypt

ciwf

Picture – CIWF

TV Report done by Al-Masry Al-Youm on the culling of pigs in Egypt.

Contains very graphic video of pigs being slaughtered and badly handled.

There has to be a government response to rectify this behaviour and make it unacceptable and punishable by law.
It gives a bad image to Egypt, contradicts the teachings of Islam, is inhuman and barbaric by all the civilized norms and international laws. Australia stopped for a while exporting live sheep to Egypt because of the way the animals were treated and handled before the slaughter. Export by Australia was restarted again recently. This can also affect tourism in Egypt. The treatment of stray animals such as dogs and cats is also on the list of complaints by foreigners who visit or live in Egypt.

All this is causing nothing but damage to Egypt’s already bad animal cruelty reputation abroad.

WARNING – The following video contains very graphic footage of animal suffering.

As each hour passes more pigs are being rounded up and killed.

Philip Lymbery, Compassion’s CEO describes the scenes from Egypt:

“Hundreds of pigs are dragged from their smallholder pens and dumped live and fully conscious into a huge dumper truck. Fighting to breathe, the animals writhe on top of each other. From a distance, the scene almost looks like a tin of maggots. Come closer, and the true horror is clear. The animals are then driven to mass graves where they are covered in caustic chemicals before being buried. Media reports tell of the pigs screaming at the pain of the chemicals for half hour or more before they are dead. This is the intended fate of all of Egypt’s 400,000 pigs.”

So far, 1253 people have joined us in calling for this cruelty to stop but we need thousands more for our concern and anger to be heard. If you can, please use this form to forward this action on to friends, family and colleagues and ask them to lend their voices too.

The true horror of the situation is shown in this film. Please be warned this is DEEPLY DISTURBING footage.

We have just a few days to mobilise public opinion and stop this cruelty.

Compassion is calling on its animal welfare allies from around the world to bring this slaughter to an end. Please ask your friends to join us in our urgent action to end this suffering now.

If you would prefer to email people without using our form the link to send on is: http://www.ciwf.org/egypt

What have we done so far?

  • Yesterday, Compassion’s Philip Lymbery and Joyce D’Silva handed in a strongly worded letter and film to the Egyptian Embassy in London. They also met with Barry O’Neil, President of the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) to lobby him to urgently intervene in Egypt.
  • We have asked our 37 European partners and our international contacts to lobby their Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs). The CVOs are members of the OIE and will be attending the General Assembly meeting of the OIE in Paris next week.
  • Compassion in World Farming joins the Egyptian Society of Animal Friends (ESAF) to strongly urge the Egyptian Government to end this horrific killing immediately and we offer ESAF our full support in the campaign for humane treatment of Egypt’s pigs.
  • Compassion in World Farming is working together with its partners at RSPCA and WSPA to strengthen the call to end the dreadful suffering taking place in Egypt right now. All three organisations are using all our collective influence to persuade both the Egyptian authorities and the OIE to halt the brutal killing of these animals, and to ensure that they can be assured of a humane future.

Thank you for all your help.

TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT’S SCANDALOUS PIG SLAUGHTER

Link:  CIWF (Uk): http://www.ciwf.org.uk/news/factory_farming/egyptian_government_cruel_pig_slaughter.aspx

Appalling scenes of horrendous mass pig killing taking place in Egypt right now have sparked international protest. From media footage, we have seen hundreds of live pigs being thrown on top of each other into huge dumper trucks. Some must surely suffocate right away or break their limbs. They are then driven to a mass grave, thrown into it and covered in what appears to be quicklime, where they must endure a slow and agonising death.

Egyptian media reports that “When each lorry is filled with 400 pigs on average, it sets off for the burial ground in Abou Zabal. Once there, something like soft sand is sprinkled on the pigs inside the lorry. This material is made up of factory wastes. The pigs start to scream because of the searing pain until they die some 30 or 40 minutes later.”

Before you play the film, be warned this is DEEPLY DISTURBING footage:

What is Compassion doing?

We are protesting in person at the Egyptian Embassy in London today and calling on the Ambassador to urge his government to halt the slaughter immediately.

We are calling on the World Animal Health Organisation (the OIE) to urge its member state, Egypt, to halt the slaughter and to abide by the OIE Guidelines on humane slaughter, which Egypt endorsed in 2005.

How can you help?

Please write urgently to the Egyptian Ambassador in your own country, calling for a halt to this inhumane killing. Please point out that such inhumane treatment of animals not only contravenes the OIE Guidelines but is also contrary to Islamic teaching which regards animals as “communities like you” (Qur’an 6:38).

Please email the Egyptian Ambassador to the UK here.

Spain: Your (Print and Photograph) Help Needed to Support Shelter Under Political Threat of Return to a Killing Station

spain

We need to pile on the pressure – Can you please do the following to support this campaign:

This is about the Perrera of San Javier (Spain). Since 2008 efforts have been underway to turn it into a shelter, much of it being paid for by animal welfare and donations.

Money is forever short in supply, and the city of San Javier is now seizing the opportunity of the lease contract running out in summer this year for going back on its promise and returning the place to what it was: a killing station.

It is also a political issue with local parties, and hence the pressure is immense for AR.
There are 100 dogs there at present – feed, vet costs, transfers to the airport to fly the animals to a safe future are all paid for privately, and the demands of the council as regards the continuation of the contract simply cannot be met at present.

Please make a statement that you support Angeles’ work and do not want to see another perrera doing its dirty work when there is hope for change.
