In the spring of 2017,PETApublished images that showed how baby elephants in the Hannover Adventure Zoo have been beaten and tormented so that they can perform circus-like tricks for visitors. The zookeepers use the elephant hook – a stick with a pointed metal hook – to make the animals docile. PETA subsequently filed criminal charges.
dealing with elephants in zoo hanover
During the ongoing investigation, an eyewitness told us about further maltreatment of elephants at the Hannover Zoo. She also watched the elephants being beaten arbitrarily and violently by the zookeepers. Here is an excerpt from her report:
“The orderlies entered the enclosure and immediately there was stress among the animals. What I saw then still makes me very angry and incredibly sad today. […] I saw a zoo keeper directly approach an elephant and forcefully (he hit his arm) rammed the hook into his skin. “
Peta has forwarded the eyewitness’s observations to the relevant prosecutor and filed a criminal complaint.
What happened after that?
Summer 2018: Attitude without elephant hook begins
In the summer of 2018, the Zoo Hannover has begun with provisional measures to switch to “protected contact” in which the elephants are no longer beaten with the elephant hook.
However, the zoo also sent a family of five Asian elephants to the Belgian zoo, Pairi Daiza,to make way for the enclosure.
For show performances and daily riding, the zoo in Brussels trains the elephants with the elephant hook – so they are exposed to further maltreatment there.
And we mean: The Hannover “Adventure” Zoo received grants worth three million euros from the city in 2010. New data on state subsidies are not available.
One thing is certain: this prison is (also) supported by the state.
The director must go – and the perpetrators must be punished. Because these do not work as a passion, they torture with enthusiasm.
To the pain of the animals comes the fear. The elephants are helplessly at the mercy of the psychopaths who torture them. The adult elephants can only watch their children being beaten. It stresses the life in the zoo anyway extremely. While hiking in freedom up to 80 kilometers a day, they are locked in these prisons in the smallest of spaces.
There are a few stupid parents who think that they can teach their children the life of the wild animals, when they visit with them the inmates and look into what a miserable life we humans have condemned these animals.
The only animal that causes the captivity of other animals and still finds it great, is the human being!
New research shows that people eating red and processed meat increase their risk of bowel cancer even if the amount they eat falls within government dietary guidelines.
Vitamin C – are you getting enough?
Vitamin C is necessary for growth and repair. It helps make collagen, one of the basic components in skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. It is also needed for wound healing, for healthy bones and teeth and helps us absorb iron from our diet.
Fat lies and bad science
The pro-fat lobby are determined get butter, cheese and beef back on the menu. Bad science, poor journalism and commercial interests are at the heart of this issue which has left many people confused.
Feeding the planet
A new study investigates which foods are truly sustainable and can feed the growing population.
Beef up without meat
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t bulk up by eating muscle (meat). Muscles develop by being used and the best diet to fuel this is a wholegrain, vegan one. This 7-day menu plan will help you gain muscle mass in the healthiest way possible.
Dodge dementia through diet
Can diet protect our long-term mental health and prevent Alzheimer’s disease? There have been many claims but even though important, it’s not something that often comes up in the pub or over a family dinner. I had a look at the scientific research and it turns out, it’s not that complicated! The research all points in the same direction.
Bite-size fact
Probably the most nutritious, health-protective foods in the world, berries are true heroes. They contain a wide range of essential nutrients and a whole lot more – a wealth of health-defending antioxidants which have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties and are great for your digestive system.
Even though berries are sweet, they don’t contain much sugar because much of their volume is pumped up by water. What little sugar they provide is well-balanced by the amount of fibre in them so it’s a healthy equation. Berries won’t cause sudden blood sugar spikes and as such are a great food for diabetics.

Despite numerous meat scandals, the meat industry has more than doubled in recent years in Germany. Germany is one of the largest meat exporters in the world.
Although there are over 26 million pigs in Germany, pigs are even imported and slaughtered at German slaughterhouses. And: because of overproduction, meat is also produced for the dumpster.
Did you know that the small piglets from different countries are being carted to Germany? Or that Germany exports meat to China and imports cheap meat from other countries? Everything has to be cheap!
More than 16 million pigs are imported from abroad each year to Germany. In Germany, it is already stinking “to the skies”, because Germany was transformed within a very short time to a country where animal suffering is the order of the day.
But not everything that the German meat consumer uses to meat comes from Germany. While Germany is one of the world’s largest meat producers, meat is also imported from other countries, such as the USA, Latin America or Asia.
A report from the meat industry in May 2017 confirmed that demand for pork in Germany and the EU is shrinking.
Then we ask ourselves: why slaughter more pigs? The meat industry also has an answer to that: exports to third countries increased by 35 percent in pork. That’s why!
My comment:
“Once upon a time there was a land of POETS and THINKERS Now we are leading on export of WEAPONS and ANIMAL CADAVERS”

Nepal isn’t known for its metal scene, but Undersidehave emerged nonetheless and they aren’t just playing awesomely heavy music – they are also protesting the beliefs of the country and religious doctrine they grew up with.
Their latest track and subsequent video is specifically targeting religious festival, Gadhimai, where thousands of animals are killed in the name of a god.
“Gadhimaiis a festival where hundreds of thousands of animals are sacrificed in the name of god. If you put that in perspective, it’s hard to imagine that it’s still happening you know.
“We see it as ignorance and a perfect example of how religious doctrines blinds you and that killing innocent animals are justified.
“We want to send our message that we don’t support killing of animals and this video is rather symbolic where Gadhimai (goddess) finally wakes up and kills all her ignorant followers. The whole concept started from challenging the existing practice and us imagining would ‘God’ really want blood of these innocent animals if all the creatures were created by god as they say?”

The ZOOXXI Platform warns that the campaign does not end here and encourages all zoos worldwide to “cross the doors to the 21st century”
During today’s plenary session at the Barcelona City Council, the last session of this term, the ZOOXXI Citizens’ Initiative has been passed.
The initiative proposes a modification of the Animal Protection, Possession and Sale Ordinance, which affects the Barcelona zoo.
After more than 10 years of investigation, mobilization and socialization for this project, this animal rights platform, now known for launching the first Citizens’ Initiative in Barcelona, has seen the ordinance be finally passed. It will drastically change Barcelona’s current zoo model.
The proposal includes a paradigm shift that can allow the zoo “to open up to nature” and invest most of its efforts on in-situ conservation for the protection of natural habitats.
The Platform also suggests the application of Compassionate Conservation and the creation of the first Scientific Studies Center on Animal Sentience.
The new zoo model will encourage an educational model based on empathy towards animals, which according to scientific studies and various pilot studies, contributes to the prevention of bullying and results in better prosocial behavior while creating a “culture of peace”.
My comment: An interesting initiative and certainly an improvement over most of the current zoos.
However, the prerequisite is that we consider a zoo to be necessary, ethically acceptable and justifiable.
Nowhere we have read about the rights of these individual animals imprisoned for the stupid fun of the masses.
We also have not read about keeping iconic animals because they are a public magnet, like big cats, elephants, giraffes, etc.
Nowhere have we read about the conditions and the reproduction of natural habitats.
Perhaps there is much more information than in this small part, but this report has given the impression that it is more an improvement of slavery than a radical reform.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the debate on the cage size of lab rats instead of banning the systems that capture and use them.
