The latest news from Slavica today (23/05) is that there is very little in the way of positive change.

Poz10

We made contact with Lucy here in London yesterday; and Lucy has sent us some great information about the work she is doing for the Pozega dogs.

Lucy has established a Facebook page called ‘Help the Pozega Dogs’ and the following are all links which we encourage you to view and help with.

About This group is created to help volunteers from Belgrade HumAnimal who rescue dogs from the Pozega horror shelter in Serbia. It is estimated over 7000 dogs have already been killed there and it is well known the animals are tortured and literally starved – we are trying to save as many as possible by reserving them vetting them/placing them in private kennels and finding them fosters or adopters.

We will raise funds, build awareness and assist with lobbying the government.

This infamous torture dog pound ironically called “Our Home”:

– is catching dogs from 7 cities in Serbia
– after a few weeks dogs are killed with t61 injenction and no preparation
– or they are strangled or beaten!!!
– dogs are literally starved before they die
– most dogs can no longer walk
– and can barely lift their heads

Pups only couple of months old are curled up on the ground and do not react any more to the human voice.

It is well known that the shelter supervisor and the veterinarian torture the dogs. There are 20 criminal charges against the management of the pound, but they continue to catch and kill these poor animals.

– it is thought around 300-400 dogs are killed per month.
– Local Authorities pay 100 euros per dog to the pound!
– it means they earn around 400.000 euros for year

**  In the last 2 weeks 57 dogs have been saved by Belgrade group HumAnimal and we are now raising funds for 20 more!!!! (10 more this week/10 next) **

– many of those saved have a serious health problems, due to being saves and sterilisations performed by incompetent veterinarians.
– some are fighting for their lives
– 4 have very sadly died due to having been starved or distemper

PLEASE HELP IN WHATEVER WAY YOU CAN TO STOP THE HORROR!

HumAnimal has saved over 250 dogs from Pozega so far and also from other kill shelters and or where dogs are being killed but live in horrible conditions as Stara Pazova, Rakovica in Belgrade etc – approx 400 dogs rescued in total.

Over 250 dogs have been adopted in Italy, some in Germany and some in Serbia.

We will not tolerate any profanities or arguing on this site. We are all here to help these poor dogs and will use all our energy and resources solely for that goal.

Pozega petition

Re our very recent post on the dog pound at Pozega:

There is now a petition which can be viewed and signed via the following link:

http://www.change.org/petitions/local-and-state-authorities-in-serbia-as-well-as-the-european-union-shut-down-the-horror-dog-shelter-in-pozega-serbia

Petition wording:

The infamous dog pound, ironically called “Our Home” in city Pozega in Serbia is catching dogs from 7 cities in Serbia. After a few weeks in the shelter dogs are being killed with t61 injection with no proper sedatives or preparation.
Dogs in this shelter are beaten and literally starved before they die. Most dogs can no longer walk and can barely lift their heads. Pups only couple of months old are curled up on the ground and do not react any more to the human voice.

Due to a sterilisation performed by incompetent veterinarians dogs die infection. Instead of surgical thread, rope is used to saw sterilisation wounds.

It is well known that the shelter supervisor and the veterinarian torture the dogs. There are currently 13 charges against the management of the pound, but they continue to catch and kill these poor animals.

– It is thought that around 70-90 dogs are killed every week!!!
– Local Authorities pay 100 euros for each dog to the pound!

This means the shelter earns around 400.000 euros per year.
– The pound charges volunteers 28 Euros per dog to get them out of the horror shelter

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO HELP US SHUT DOWN THIS CORRUPT SHELTER FOREVER AND TO CHARGE THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS HORROR.

EUUN0001

Please crosspost this petition and get as many people to sign as you can.

If you are an EU citizen then please go to out ‘EU Links’ tab at the top of the page and use the links provided to provide this information to your national MEPs.

Explain that you are very concerned about the killing of dogs at this (Pozega) pound and that you wish all EU funding to be stopped that supports the abuses at this shelter.

At a meeting on 17th April in Belgrade we were unofficially informed via Milos Skalicki of the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, that the Serbian authorities were going to call for ‘better implementation of animal welfare laws’.

If the pound at Pozega is not somewhere where the Ministry should be acting immediately, then we don’t know what is !

You can see the Ministry response to the meeting below:

Response from the Ministry of Agriculture to letter DO NOT CHANGE ANIMAL WELFARE LAW IN SERBIA

TRANSLATION

On 04/09/2013 you sent an e-mail to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in which you expressed the view that the Conference about the welfare of abandoned animals, organized by TAIEX and Veterinary management on 17.04.2013, should not be held because it is an attempt to make changes to the Animal Welfare Law, relating to the ban of killing animals.

We inform you that the Conference on this issue is of great importance and it is opportunity to meet Directors of Veterinary management from this region, representatives of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), representatives of the European Commission and the RSPCA – all to talk about the problem of abandoned animals. The aim of this Conference was to share experiences of countries in the region related to the problem of stray animals, control of their population, the role and responsibilities of government agencies and non-governmental organizations.

The allegations from some animal welfare organizations are incorrect – who are calling for protest rallies and petitions against the Serbian authorities, NGO organizations and speakers at this Conference – because, as stated above, this Conference hasn’t been organized as “attempt” to make changes in the existing Animal Welfare Law, but rather for better implementation of same.

Veterinary management has good cooperation with many well-meaning animal welfare associations and non-governmental organizations, of which some actively participate and provide help to us in achieving our mutual goal of animal welfare.

Sincerely
Milos Skalicki

Bulgaria: UPDATE 31/03/13 – My Name is ‘Borko’, a Year This May I was Beaten so Badly That My Spine Was Broken. Please Take Action for Me and My Friends.

My name is Borko, a year this May I was beaten so badly that my spine was broken.

I was taken in by a loving family, my Daddy is a Bulgarian Doctor and a very kind man. Now my Daddy is being vilified in our village because he helps the poor… strays like me.

The people want my family and me out and there was a mob sent to our home with a film crew. I was attacked and beaten again in my own garden.

PLEASE share for us and let the world know that the Government in Bulgaria are not enforcing acts of cruelty and that they are allowing the kind people who help animals like me to be persecuted and removed from their home.

Watch my video here, please don’t ignore my CRY for help

A message shared by K9 Rescue Bulgaria:

Thank you so much everyone for your incredible support of Borko and his family.

Borko is much loved by his family and he loves them too, so we do not want to take him away from them, yet of course, they also want his safety, and this is the purpose of our appeal – to finally have legal protection for Borko and all the other animals in Bulgaria.  This is why we want to gain as much publicity as possible, so that it is picked up by the international media and the Bulgarian Government are embarrassed into finally taking action against animal abuser.

Bulgaria has an excellent animal protection act, yet it is totally unenforced and this is what we want to see change, to stop the mob culture like this, that we keep seeing time and again happen against animal advocates in Bulgaria, who are targeted daily for feeding, helping, rescuing and accommodating strays.

The fact that the TV crew think it’s acceptable for the ТTV 7 Film Crew to simply film and report this atrocity as the most normal thing in the world, without criticism of Borko’s abuse, only criticizing that the village doctor has animals on his property and patients have to put up with them, speaks volumes about the culture towards animal abuse as being normal and acceptable in Bulgaria.

It’s time for change, and maybe, just maybe, Borko can be the voice of that change…

Please help Dr Litov and Borko to grab the international media’s attention to embarrass the Bulgarian government into finally enforcing their Animal Protection Act.

100,000 + galgos abandoned at the end of hunting every year – work it out for yourself!…….

People say the figure of 50,000 galgos abandoned every year is exaggerated – usually i…t’s the hunters who say so, of course, as they don’t want the bad press.

Vera of Galgos en Familia, Malaga province in southern Andalucia says, ‘Co-inciding with the end of the hunting season at this time of year, more than 5.000 galgos are abandoned by hunters in our province.
It is estimated that 1,500 galgos are collected each year from the streets of Malaga province and the majority of these from the valley of Antequera, where they are used as tools to capture hares, a hunting activity that is banned in other european countries but is still very much allowed here in Spain.

The galgos, classed as useless and not worthy by the hunters are punished beaten and abused for not doing what is expected of them before being left to their fate on streets, motorways and countryside of Malaga.’  Vera saves many galgos and podencos from Malaga perrera, El Paraiso.

So, 5,000 just from one province in the region of Andalucia. This link, lists the 50 provinces in Spain, including the Canary Islands. Most of the names you will recognise as suffering from abandonment of galgos and podencos.   So, even reducing the number down to, say 30 – that still qives a figure of 150,000 abandoned at the end of hunting every year!

Subject: NEGATIVE UPDATE – (RO) Brasov: <European Youth Olympic Festival> in Brasov 2013 – but No Fair Play for Street Dogs

We have just received the information that as of yesterday, Dec. 14th, the mayor of Brasov has banned AW advocates from feeding the dogs at the shelter Brasov-Stupin. The animals will die.

Please spread and take decisive action.

European Youth Olympic Festival» in Brasov 2013 – but no fair play for street dogs!

The Olympic Winter Festival of the European Youth takes place in Brasov in 2013.

The Olympic village and all venues lie close to this town in the South East of Romania. The communities participating are Predeal, Rosenau (Rasnov), Poiana Brasov and Brasov itself.

To expect the setting of a humane example and fair play is difficult owing to the fact that over 30,000 dogs have been killed in the area in the last few years, and even now hundreds of dogs are starving to death in the local and council-run pounds of Brasov Stupin and Rasnov.

The council funds end up in the pockets of dog catchers – first and foremost amongst those the known animal abuser Flavius Barbulescu (see photo above) and his unscrupulous vet  Filip Ailin.

The impounded dogs, at this moment some 400 animals, receive no veterinary attention whatsoever, and proper food only when it is fed and paid for by AW activists.

Mayor Scripcaru holds a very cynic view on the matter and is happy to let the animals starve. The mayor of Rasnov also has made himself a name as dog hater and by completely ignoring current animal welfare legislation.

The German ARD TV station has shown a documentary on Dec. 8th 2012 about the machinations of Romanian dog catchers titled “a dog’s life in (Ro) shelters)”

Hi Mark,

“Winter has just struck with all of its fierce power. We’ve been literally snowed in for the last couple of days and a state of emergency has been declared for Vojvodina.  When even the highways are buried in snow drifts, what can you expect of the local roads? And yet my shelter, although not fully prepared for the winter weather, is holding on in a small snow-covered village…

We’re in the grip of a deep freeze, with continuing snowfall accompanied by frosty, biting and stinging northerly winds.  Luckily, this heavy snow can’t contrive to pile up on my chain link fence, but the heaps of snow do build up on the rooftop. I guess it’s a good thing that I still don’t hear ominous cracking sounds from the roof as it is successfully bearing the burden of extra weight, at least for now.

The yard resembles a winter wonderland. It’s not so magical, though, for those of us who are shoveling paths through the deep snow so that the others, the furry, four-legged ones, can run and jump easily all over the yard.  The youngsters are having a great time and loving the snow (yeah, it’s easy for them to love it), but most of the older kitties are definitely not impressed. Some of them took a brief walk through the snow on that first day, decided they didn’t like it and are now resting in their warm rooms, while the others didn’t even desire to set foot outside. The only exception is Speki, whose fascination with snow is well known, but he won’t be so delighted if the food delivery truck doesn’t manage to push its way through.

Although we’re in mid-December, the snow caught everyone by surprise. When things get back to normal again, all of the doors of the kitties’ indoor enclosure and the gates will have to be strengthened and fixed. This winter is obviously going to be brutal, with above normal heavy snowfall and frigid winds. We must do everything within our power to prepare for the cold months coming ahead the best we can.

Please, help us with whatever you are able to give! It’s a dire emergency here and there’s no more time to waste!”

Warm wishes

Danica
