SAV Comment – we find this video very disturbing. Is this the way young children should act with dead animals ? – are there now not enough methods of learning about the structure of any animal without having to physically cut one into bits ? – and where exactly did the high school obtain all these dead cats from ? – Dangerous, very dangerous; will kids like this look at human death in such a trivial way in future ?
He who disregards the suffering of animals at an early age often disregards the suffering of humans in later life – or they even become responsible for it !!!

PETA has obtained a disturbing video that was apparently filmed at Oklahoma City’s top-ranked Harding Charter Preparatory High School.
The footage depicts heartless students wearing lab coats and playfully dancing with dead cats slated to be dissected in their biology class.
The video of the choreographed display was posted on social media, and the students’ teacher was even tagged in the post.
Students learn faster and better by using non-animal methods such as interactive software programs, and with these modern tools, they don’t learn to treat or think of animals as equipment to be used and discarded.

Help the World’s Loneliest Orca
Nearly half a century ago, Lolita was taken from her family in the wild. Now she lives here:
Wild members of Lolita’s family are highly social, stay with their mothers for life, travel up to 100 miles per day, and dive hundreds of feet below the water’s surface, all while Lolita is imprisoned at the Miami Seaquarium in the smallest orca tank in North America.
And Lolita hasn’t seen another orca since her tankmate died after ramming his head into the side of the tank more than 35 years ago.
Lolita’s family members, who still swim in the area where she was captured, were listed as endangered, in part because dozens of orcas were stolen from the ocean around the same time as Lolita.
Following a petition by PETA and others, the National Marine Fisheries Service granted Lolita those same protections under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). We believe that confining Lolita to a small, shallow, and barren concrete tank—where she has been unable to swim any meaningful distance, dive, forage, or carry out virtually any natural behavior for more than 40 years and where she is without an orca companion or protection from the hot sun—violates the ESA.
PETA, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Orca Network, and two concerned individuals have notified the Miami Seaquarium of their intent to sue, as required by the ESA, in behalf of Lolita and seeking her freedom from the facility.
Lolita could be released to a sea pen in her native waters for rehabilitation and to live out the remainder of her days near her family in as natural of a setting as possible.

Please do not go ahead with this plan.
Why is this important?
In a modern, civilised society, there is no place for this grotesque and cruel pastime. The previous government banned the practice, but the new government is planning to legalise hunting foxes using dogs.
This is a barbaric and outdated activity that should stay where it belongs – in the past.
We have a choice in this life, we can be kind, or we can be cruel. I think the choice is easy…

The pig industry is about to succeed in getting Europe to approve fully slatted floors. We have just weeks to stop them.
Please, will you take a moment to demand that European Agriculture Ministers reject fully slatted flooring as the ‘best available technique’ for pig farming?
A European reference document to define ‘best available techniques’ for the intensive pig industry is being negotiated. A threat looms: fully slatted flooring for pigs risks being recognised within this document as the ‘best available technique’, despite it being the worst system for the animals. We have just weeks to prevent this huge backward-step for pig welfare in Europe – please, act now.
For many years, Compassion supporters have campaigned to improve the conditions in which pigs throughout the EU are reared. Thanks to you, last year we submitted a petition with 475,576 signatures to Europe’s Agriculture Ministers. This called on them to ensure that the rules set down in the EU Pigs Directive are respected and that pigs are protected from the worst excesses of factory farming.
Now, a European document that defines the ‘best available technique’ for intensive pig farming is being negotiated. The pig industry is about to succeed in getting fully slatted floors approved within this document – and we have just weeks to stop them.
Pigs are curious and intelligent animals that use their snouts to explore and root around. This decision will result in Europe’s pigs living in a completely barren environment without a single activity to occupy their time.
How can fully slatted floors be the ‘best available technique’?
The worst cannot be ‘the best’
In reality, these floors are not compatible with good animal welfare: European law, in place since 2003, requires pigs to have materials like straw in which they can explore, rest comfortably and nest before giving birth. Fully slatted floors can make the provision of straw impossible. By declaring that fully slatted floors are the best available technique, the European Commission will be endorsing an environmental practice that goes against its own laws on animal welfare.
The argument, that fully slatted floors make it easier to dispose of pig waste and keep areas clean, is also weak: pig waste is 10 times more polluting in water than human waste and has been a major cause of an ecological disaster in Brittany, France, where vast algal blooms have plagued the sea along the coast.
Fully slatted floors are not permitted, or will be phased, out in the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland. This is because, in reality, this system has no environmental benefit and is the worst available technique for the pigs’ welfare.
It is unacceptable that European authorities are prepared to sacrifice animal welfare laws and the environment to endorse a method of production that would simply benefit the intensive pig farming industry.
Please write to your Agriculture Minister today and call on them to reject fully slatted floors as the ‘best available technique’.

This image shows a bold protest at the end of last month, with local Tibetans blocking diggers and tractors from starting a construction project that threatened their livelihoods.
They had previously petitioned the Chinese authorities against the project, asking for compensation for the destruction of their homes and the land on which they depend.
Several protesters were arrested and interrogated but for the moment the construction is on hold.
The Chinese government wants the world to believe that Tibetans are content under its rule. Stories like this help to expose the reality – can you help us get the news out?

Here is just one typical story;
Eli was kept in a city pound on a very short chain – The chain was so short that she couldn’t reach the dog house.
She was rescued, taken to safety and to the vet for a full assessment. It took her some time to recover, but NOW she is a happy and healthy girl. Under the loving care of volunteers, Eli has blossomed in a true golden retriever beauty and she is as lovable as a Goldens can be.
This is what Eli has to say:
” Hi my name is Eli, I’m here with my friends and it is so safe and nice. They are so kind and loving. They say that I am the kindest, most gentle and loving girl EVER!!!
That I am a perfect dog for the perfect family….
Life is beautiful and I love every minute of it.

The shelter was opened on 28/01/2003 during the time when Subotica legally permitted euthanasia of dogs and on Fridays people could bring their dogs to be euthanized for free.
This is the first no-kill shelter in Serbia.
The shelter covers the area of 12000m2 + an additional land next to the shelter (approx. 3600 m2) that still isn’t fenced nor used.
Currently in the shelter there are more than 500 dogs.
Around 70% of the dogs are old (some have been in the shelter since 2003/2004).
There are only 2-4 people taking care of the shelter and its dogs.
The shelter is funded exclusively by donations, which are not regular or reliable.
The shelter requires building materials, cleaning supplies, food (granules and canned food, salami, bread, etc), blankets, fleas/ticks products and money to cover the vet costs, bills, etc.
