Serbia: ‘Tug o War’ Video Using Horses Requires Actions – Please e Mail Using Sample Letter Below.

Serbian Flag

UPDATE 14/1/14 –

We first had this disgusting video footage sent to us this last weekend – now we have followed up urgently and we are pleased to say that:

The police of Valjevo city have now been following up this footage – as a result they have worked with the Public Attorney of Moinica City who gave an official report of the incident on National television on 10.1.2014.  We understand that all persons involved in this incident who undertook this animal abuse and caused suffering have now been arrested and will be charged under Article 269 of Serbian law for animals.  This has a maximum punishment of 3 years in jail.

Whilst we do not expect anyone to be sent to jail for 3 years, it is hoped by us and many others that the prompt action since the weekend will send a clear message to the communities that animal abuse will not be tolerated.  If Serbia wishes to join the EU as a member state, then it really / seriously needs to address the issue of working to the good animal welfare laws which it currently has in place; rather than keep ingoring them.  We have shown enough examples on this site where the laws are just ignored for the benefit of some, whilst the animals continue to suffer.

This is a start of actions which we very much hope will now continue.

Well done the Serbian campaigners who have worked so hard with us over the last few days to get a quick and positive result.  They know who they are.

———————————————————

On 12/1/14 we have been provided with the following very disturbing abuse of horses in a kind of ‘tug o war’ type event.

You can see the video here: (note you may need to copy and watch on Google; or try the video link in the Sample Letter below)

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYF06B8tRGo&feature=youtu.be

At first we were unsure what country this event had taken place in.  We consequently made contact with Serbian activists.

With their very valuable help we have now identified that this abuse of horses is taking place in Serbia; at a village known as Milavac.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milavac

and  http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milavac

And also   http://webot.org/?r=e&search=Milavac

Milavac is a village situated in Ljig municipality in Serbia.

Serbian activists are now making a written charge to both the Ministry of Agriculture and also to the Ministry of Internal Policing.

This crime showing clear abuse of animals is punishable by Article 269 of the Criminal Code of Serbia.  Proof of this video has now been made as evidence of the crime, so that it can be presented to the police.  Without a hard copy of the evidence the police will dismiss this crime; and so we have to copy in onto a reliable database for safe keeping and future evidence.  If a record is not kept, the police will ignore and dismiss the evidence presented – thus the abuse will be un-recorded and the police will take no further action to investigate and punish those undertaking this abuse.

This information is only now being posted onto this SAV site, once copies of the video have been made – now we have clear evidence of the abuses that the authorities and the police cannot ignore.  This evidence is being presented to them in the form of a charge, asking them to take action.

We hope to be able to give you an update on the situation in the future.

We request that you all write a few lines expressing your disgust at this video, and demand that the police and the authorities take action.

You can write your own e mail, or alternatively, copy and send the following short sample letter:

SAMPLE LETTER.

Dear ladies and gents of the Serbian police and government authorities;

I write regarding the following video which I am informed was filmed in Milavac village, Serbia.

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYF06B8tRGo&feature=youtu.be

I now request that you undertake full investigative action to ensure that all those involved in this clear abuse of animals are prosecuted under Article 269 of the Criminal Code of Serbia.

This type of animal abuse does not do your nation any good regarding its global audience.  You need to act and act now to ensure this does not happen again in future.  This is also not a good advertisement for Serbia and its wish to become a future member of the EU.

I may consider that is necessary to provide this video footage to the EU Parliament / Commission for their review.

Pending this; I ask once again that you act to prevent this kind of event ever taking place again in the future.  Today in the 21st Century, Europe must grow up and ensure that animal abuse becomes a thing of the past.  If it happens now, then you should be taking action to ensure that it does not happen in the future.

Thank You;

Yours truly,

Stop the export of Canadian sheep for cruel ritual slaughtering

canadian sheep

In October of this year (2013), for the first time in Singapore, Canadian lambs were killed in the annual korban ritual during Hari Raya Haji celebrations. Identifying a need for another supply chain, Singapore had explored Canada as an additional source of sacrificial animals. The Canadian Federal Government obliged and 500 lambs were shipped to their inhumane deaths. This method of ritual killing has been increasingly criticized due to animal welfare concerns. The animals slaughtered are primarily goats and sheep who are killed by having their throats cut while fully conscious. New Zealand has already banned the live export of animals for slaughter, and Australia appears to be well on its way to doing the same.

The BC SPCA’s position statement for humane killing includes “In reference to slaughter of farm animals, it is imperative for animals to be rendered unconscious and insensible to pain prior to slaughter, notwithstanding religious or ethnic custom.” They further state that scientific evidence indicates there are greater risks of suffering of animals during ritual slaughter conducted without prior stunning than for conventional slaughter; this suffering is due to increased restraint, pain experienced during throat cutting, and pain and stress experienced by the conscious animal during subsequent bleeding out.

Even a draft document of the Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep (2013) states that the acceptable methods of euthanasia for sheep are gunshot, penetrating captive bolt, non-penetrating captive bolt guns, IV barbiturate overdoes, and blunt force trauma. Being slaughtered alive by using a knife to their throats is not stated as an acceptable procedure.

Please Sign this petition and tell the Canadian Government that Canadian sheep should not be exported for purposes of religious ritual.

England (UK): Badger cull cost £4,100 per badger, claim campaigners.

Subject: Badger cull cost £4,100 per badger, claim campaigners

By Western Daily Press  |  Posted: January 05, 2014

The cost of the badger cull pilots in Somerset and Gloucestershire has been put at £4,100 per badger shot, campaigners claim – and put the cost of a four-year trial at £19 million.

Animal charity Care for the Wild almost doubled its previous estimate, made in October, of £2,200 per animal, and now puts the total cost of the cull trials, which began in August at £7.3 million.

Taxpayers will pick up £5.8 million of that, with farmers paying directly to cover the direct costs of shooting the 1,771 badgers.

badgers animal aid.org.uk

badgers this is somerset.co.uk

The figures increased after the culls were extended, with both coming to an end last month – the Gloucestershire cull being abandoned due to a failure to achieve its targets.

Charity spokesman Dominic Dyer called it “one of the most disastrous and expensive wildlife culls in history”.

He added: “This is being done to the sound of scientists almost universally saying that culling won’t have any significant impact on TB.”

Derived from answers to parliamentary questions, statistics from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Freedom of Information requests, the figures out the cost to farmers who paid for the culling itself at £1.49 million. The policing bill was put at £2.66 million, made up of costs for manpower, transport, equipment and accommodation.

A further £3.17 million was attributed to costs at environment quango Natural England, the Food and Environment Research Agency and Defra, and included trapping, monitoring and data collection.

A spokesman for the NFU said: “If marksmen had been allowed to go about their lawful business, there wouldn’t have been any policing costs.”

The annual cost of bovine TB to the taxpayer has been repeatedly put at £100 by the NFU and Defra. A large chunk of this is compensation paid to farmers who had TB-infected cattle slaughtered. This reached £34 million in 2012-13, up from £30 million the year before that. The costs go further, however, with the plummeting value of cows under restriction and the huge mental strain on farmers who see swathes of their herd lost. Some of the costs to Defra are regained through the onward sale of infected carcasses.

A report from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee last year put the cost of an injectable badger vaccine at £2,000-£4,000 per sq km, with the vaccine itself expected to cost £5-6 per dose and the DIVA test (which differentiates between infected and vaccinated cattle) costing £25, in addition to existing testing costs.

Direct Action Against All Forms of bloodsports

Subject: OPINION: £7.3m badger cull is most disastrous, expensive wildlife cull on record

By Western Morning News  |  Posted: January 05, 2014

By Dominic Dyer, Care for the Wild International

In between taking calls from senior editors of national newspapers asking me if I could confirm reports that Environment Minister Owen Paterson was on a skiing holiday in France, leaving David Cameron to face the anger of flood victims, I spend some of my Christmas break getting to grips with the outcome of the badger cull pilots.

Using a number of key sources including freedom of information requests, answers to parliamentary questions and leaked documents from Defra and Natural England, I put together a picture of a badger cull that went wrong from day one and has proved a complete disaster.

To start with the free shooting of badgers at night by National Farmer Union-employed pest controllers has proved a complete and utter failure.

Despite claims by the Environment Minister that this method would deliver a quick and efficient way of killing badgers, within 10 days of the culls commencing only 90 badgers had been killed in both cull zones by free shooting.

This resulted in panic in Defra and a major deployment of Government-employed traps teams with heat seeking equipment to increase the kill rates.

At the end of the initial six weeks for each of the pilot culls, no more than 25% of the badgers killed were as a result of free shooting.

It also quickly became apparent that four monitors in two cull zones the size of the Isle of Wight was completely inadequate to gauge the humanness of the shooting operations.

As the culls progressed, wounded badgers were picked up outside of the cull zones, badgers were left overnight in cages in freezing muddy damp conditions, cages were not cleaned down between kills and the shooters found they had the wrong type of ammunition, to kill badgers at point blank range in a caged environment.

The aim of the pilot culls was to kill 70% of the badger population in each of the zones, however at the end of the six weeks trial, only 19% of this target had been achieved in Gloucestershire and 20% in Somerset.

Rather than accepting defeat, Mr Paterson played for time and faced public ridicule with the claim “the badgers had moved the goal posts”.

He then announced a shock 66% drop in the estimated badger population, which he blamed on bad weather and disease, although most experts in the field believe the sabotage of hair traps by anti-cull activists and the illegal killing of badgers by farmers and landowners was a more likely factor for the huge decline.

Despite serious concerns from Natural England’s chief scientific advisor and a number of its board members, the decision was taken extend both cull pilots.

However, the NFU contractors and government trap teams could still only reach 65% of their kill targets in Somerset after nine weeks and 39% in Gloucestershire after 11 weeks.

Also by going beyond the six week trial period, it is widely accepting by leading scientists and badger behaviourists that the trials have significantly increased the disruption to badger colonies and the risk of perturbation and TB spread.

Then we come to the staggering costs of the badgers culls which Mr Paterson has done all he can to hide from MPs and the public.

If we take account of policing costs, Government trap teams and equipment, Whitehall staff costs in Defra, Natural England and Food and Environment Research Agency and badger sett monitoring and data collection, it is estimated that the total costs of both cull pilots is around £7.3 million.

If we divide this figure by the total number of badgers killed (1,771) we are looking at a cost per badger of £4,121.

If the culls are to be extended as Mr Paterson plans for a further 3 years we can add a further £12 million to the costs giving a total figure of £19.3 million for four years of badger culling in West Somerset and West Gloucestershire.

This figure is all the more worrying, when you consider based on DEFRA estimates that even if the cull pilots were 100% successful and reduced the increase in the spread of bovine TB by 16% over nine years, this would only deliver a knock on benefit of £2.5 million to the tax payer.

So based on current projections the costs of the badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire outweigh the benefits by over seven times.

Taking this into account, it comes as no surprise to see Owen Paterson become as elusive as Lord Lucan since the end of the badger cull pilots, leaving his inexperienced junior Farming Minister George Eustice to take the heat in the media and Parliament, for what is increasingly seen as a disastrous policy.

Defra officials are now playing down any talk of roll out to 10 more zones in 2014 and the director general of the NFU has recently stated that even a limited extension of the culls into Devon and Cornwall in 2014, would be a bad move.

Pressure is now building for a full debate in Westminster and a further vote on any extension of the badger cull pilots.

Talks of secret reports and efforts to influence the Independent Humanness Panel behind closed doors, has also further weakened Owen Paterson’s position and credibility.

Many Tory and Liberal Democrat MPs are now becoming increasingly concerned about the growing public anger the cull has generated as thousands of protesters take to the streets of cities and towns across the UK from Manchester to Leeds and Brighton and Bristol in what is now called the “Badger Army”, which is one of the fastest growing wildlife protection campaigns in Europe.

At a time when families are seeing the biggest squeeze on incomes in over 40 years with many having to make decisions about heating or eating, this Government has delivered one of the most disastrous and expensive wildlife culls on record.

In 2014 David Cameron should listen to scientific and public opinion and stop the disastrous badger cull policy for good.

The Government must now focus on bringing farmers, landowners and wildlife protection groups together to find a long term solution to reducing bovine TB.

This new approach should be good for both farmers and wildlife and be based on tighter cattle movement controls, improved TB testing and TB vaccination for both badgers and cattle.

India: Please Sign Petition Asking Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police: Indepth investigation of abduction & disposal of dogs in Mogappair.

India dogs 1

Dear all;

I just signed the petition “Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police: Indepth investigation of abduction & disposal of dogs in Mogappair” on Change.org.

It’s important. Will you sign it too?

Here’s the link:

http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/tamil-nadu-s-director-general-of-police-indepth-investigation-of-abduction-disposal-of-dogs-in-mogappair?share_id=HLyQPHceZR&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

Thanks!

Mark (SAV).

Petition wording:

Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police: Indepth investigation of abduction & disposal of dogs in Mogappair

We want an in-depth investigation on the heinous capture and loading of the community pets of Mogappair West Garden Area. We want to know where the dogs have been held or released and demand that they be returned to their original community at Mogappair West Garden.

On 28th July 2013, in Nolumbur, a Chennai Corporation employee abducted more than 20 community dogs in a tricycle used to collect trash. One passerby managed to click some photographs, as the employee was not in uniform and had no id on him. When asked he claimed that he had the necessary permission for transporting these dogs.

Due to the inaction of the officers at V7 Nolambur police station, we continued undaunted in attempting to discover the fate of these 22 dogs.

Prabudass, the only corporation employee we could clearly link to the crime informed us that the dogs had only been captured and moved to another area, which in itself is illegal. However, we were reluctant to believe this information as he was refusing to tell us into which area he had the dogs released.
In the meantime, the residential association had barracked the police station, threatening the police officers and the animal welfare activits and volunteers with dire consequences if they should continue to investigate this case. Unmoved by these threats, we continued in the quest to discover the fate of the poor innocents. We discovered a shocking sequence of events whereby the homeowner’s association had sanctioned to “arrange” the abduction and round up these dogs and remove them from the area.

The next day, 15 of the association people came to the V-7 Nolambur police station at 22:30 hours and told the Inspector they supported the association with the decision to abduct the dogs.

In our investigations we found only one dog remaining in the vicinity of Mogappair West Garden area. The dog was found with a wound on his head that could only have been inflicted by a rock flung at him with some force.

Most distressing is that fact that the police of V7 Nolambur police station are still unwilling to take up the case or even file an FIR as a senior former judge is a resident member of the association.

We implore every person who sees this post to please take up the ghastly atrocity as a cause worth fighting for and bring pressure upon the police to prosecute the guilty parties.

Again, we emphasize:

Please, sign this petition to force the Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police to carry out an indepth investigation on the heinous capture and loading of the community pets of Mogappair West Garden Area. We want to know where the dogs have been held and demand that they be returned to their original community at Mogappair West Garden.

Also, please call up the Nolambur Police Station on 9176528259 or 9940596447 and add your outraged voices to ours.

Please, share to as MANY PEOPLE as possible.

The following are words written directly by Lesley:

Dear EU officials, CVO´s and Member State authorities, highway police and fellow NGO´s,

In June 2013 Eyes on Animals and Animal Welfare Foundation sent a team to check on some of the slaughterhosues where many of the EU animals being exported by the EU had been previously slaughtered.

We are only sending our reports out now to all of you, as up until now we wanted to give the slaughterhouses and Turkish CVO some time to react and make improvements, before going public with them.

We have just now come back from a second inspection in Turkey to re-visit these three plants and also check on new ones. Some minor improvements were made but welfare problems remain very serious.
Hopeful news is that the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture has a team drafting welfare legislation at the time of slaughter- which may come into existence in about 2 years. In the meantime we are trying to advise the slaughterhouses on how they could reduce suffering and are in communication with authority in Turkey about our observations.

For now, here are our reports from June. In early 2014 we will send you reports of other slaughterhouses we visited in December 2013.

Best wishes,

Lesley Moffat, MSc Ethology
Eyes on Animals
Director and inspector

Turkey is not currently a member state of the EU.  Regardless, we are attempting to ensure that animals at Turkish slaughterhouses are treated with the utmost respect.  Turkey aims to join the EU in future, and so it is our aim that by the time it becomes a member state, Turkey will have to install and operate CCTV in all of its slaughterhouses, as we hope will be the situation throughout Europe and all EU member states.

This directly links in with our campaign which is now underway to try and ensure that CCTV is fitted in the future to ALL slaughterhouses within EU nations.

You can read more about this, and support the petitions by clicking on the following link:

Simply click on the national flag link and then move on as required using the ‘TO PETITION’ link which is given at the end to take you through to the petition.

Please note that we are in the process of updating this continually to meet the demands of other nations.  At this very moment, we are having the petition translated into Serbian so that Serbia (another NON EU member state at present); can be worked on to ensure that CCTV will be installed in all their slaughterhouses before they become EU members.

It will not be a quick or easy campaign; but we are determined to ensure that CCTV in all EU slaughterhouses happens in the future.

UK (England): Fox Saved From Death At Dig-Out.

England

Subject: Fox Saved From Death At Dig-Out

Hunt Saboteurs Association News Release 30/12/2013

On Saturday December 28th hunt saboteurs from Yorkshire (England) attended a Pony Club meet of the York & Ainsty South Foxhounds at Escrick Park.

Three foxes that were deliberately hunted were aided in their escape by the sabs through the course of the day and, as the sun was going down, three terrier men were found just as they were about to finish digging the second fox out of an active badger sett.

The sabs began to obstruct the men from continuing this illegal activity and the situation began to escalate, with about 8-10 more men with spades soon arriving at the scene. One sab was smashed in the head with the pistol the men planned to shoot the fox with and was also knocked down in a field by the men’s pickup truck. The sabs were not deterred by this, fought off the attackers and stood their ground.

Sab1

On stopping the dig-out the sabs had to prize a terrier from the fox as it had locked on to the fox’s face. Sabs then had to help the fox free from the earth as the earth around it had been caved in, leaving only its head exposed. The fox escaped with little visable injury, the terrier’s face was badly wounded from fighting the fox.

Sab2

Sab3

The group are now preparing to prosecute the hunt for their actions and ask Escrick Park to stop facilitating these criminal activities. Anyone concerned by the activities of the Y&AS hunt should contact Escrick Park ( www.escrick.com/contact-us) to ask that they refuse the hunt access from now on.

Sab4

Sab5

Lee Moon, spokesperson for the Hunt Saboteurs Association, stated: “Only two days after Boxing Day we see the real face of fox hunting. Boxing Day is the sanitized, media friendly press stunt that the hunting community use each year to pull the wool over the eyes of the British public. This is the grim reality of what occurs the rest of the time when the media spotlight is elsewhere. Escrick Park are a major supporter of the York and Ainsty South Hunt and are just as guilty as they allow these illegal acts to take place on their land. We call on them to ban the hunt from their estate before they become embroiled in any legal action taken against the hunt.”
