PROTEST against EUTHANAZIA EUTHANAZIA FOR  70 DOGS
IN THE SHELTER OF BECEJ, SERBIA.

If we don’t gather for action, 70 dogs will die.

WE CAN NOT ACCEPT THAT :

Becej shelter has a welcoming capacity for 120 dogs. Today, despite a huge effort for massive sterilisation, the number of dogs has increased and got to 187 dogs, which led the municipality to order the following action : before the end of march 2010, 70 dogs will be killed.

Seeing the efforts from the international volunteers and investment of associations in the shelter to improve everyday the condition of dogs in this shelter, and according to the more and more numerous people interested in this cause, to the increasing number of adopted dogs abroad, we determine that killing the dogs is not a solution to street dogs and surpopulation in shelters.

Hand the efforts from the international volunteers and associations of investment in the shelter everyday to Improve the condition of dogs in this shelter, and according to the more numerous and more people interested in this case to the Increasing number of dogs adopted abroad, we determined that killing the dogs is not a solution to street dogs and overcrowding in shelters.

A new fur farm investigation was published in Finland last Wednesday. It
included 30 different fur farms which were visited during the summer and
autumn of 2009. The results show widespread animal abuse, intense suffering
and neglect. Friday 26.02.10 will be an international day of action. We are hoping that as
many countries as possible will do something (demo at embassy, some
action..)

The reputation of the country is very important for the Finns,
that’s why it’s very useful if this gets international attention.

In Finland approximately three million animals are killed annually at fur
farms. The footage shows the everyday life of these animals. It’s time to
ban fur farming in Finland and put an end to this suffering.

We launched a new fur campaign Wednesday evening in Finland. A very
respected current news program “A-Studio” did a great, long piece on it,
 showing a lot of footage which a veterinarian commented at the same time.
After that there was a debate between an animal ethicist and a
 spokesperson for the Fur Breeders Association.

 Then on Thursday we did a press conference and since then we have been all
over tv-news, newspapers and media’s websites. We are getting lots of
support and it seems everyone here has seen the pictures and videos.We also held a public discussion in the parliament today where the head of the green party and the head of the left party said they supported a ban (which is our aim of course). 

Yesterday (Thursday) we published pictures of a farm which belongs to the head of the Fur Breeders Association.

This was understandably big news.

The fur farm discussion is suddenly very big here now (less than a week ago
it was non-existent) and it seems that – although they desparately
 try – the fur farmers are not getting a lot of sympathy.

 ————–  30 FUR FARMS INVESTIGATED IN FINLAND

Finnish animal rights organisation Oikeutta Eläimille and Animal Defenders
International have released a joint investigation into Finnish
 fur farms. Investigation included 30 different fur farms which were visited during the
summer and autumn of 2009. The results show widespread animal abuse,
 intense suffering and neglect. Many animals were suffering from
eye-infections, injured limbs, open wounds, bitten off tails, deformed limbs
and ears, mouth diseases and overgrowth of gums among others.
 

Animals also suffered from stereotypical behavior, fear and apathy. 

Also, the prolonged suffering was proved by visiting some farms many times.
One particularly bad farm was filmed three times, in a period of
 four months. In this farms there was a breeding male fox, whose head was at
a strange angle, eyes and mouth were infected, claws were over grown
 and his ear was withered. 

After four months the animal was still there, and his condition was as awful, if not worse.

The activists also filmed a fur farm, which belongs to the head of the
Finnish Fur Breeder’s Association. This farm was the worst mink farm of
 the investigation. He also had foxes in the farm. Mink had eye-infections, open wounds and bitten-off ears. Foxes were very frightened, one fox had an injured ear and some of the cages were dangerously broken so the animals could injure themselves. This shows that these are not individual cases: systematic animal abuse takes place in all Finnish fur farms.

This man killed my loving creature, my little kitten Nikki. He took her alive to the neuteralization, and he brought her back dead into my embrace. (I also have other two cats: Kiara and Mrvica, that both had the same operation, and are still alive and well). It happened at the beginning of last year, on January 6th, 2008. Before the operation I had asked the above mentioned veterinarian why Nikkis breathing was irregular, panting like, after running and playing (it seemed abnormal to me). He told that it was noting, she just got tired. Only afterwards I found an information, in medical books, that its a disease indicator. That was also confirmed by a veterinarian who was treating Kiara and Mrvica who were disturbed and fell ill after Nikkis death. Nikki had a weak heart. If Id known that, I would have never taken her to the operation under those conditions, yet I would search a cure and solution for her illness.

Few days after Nikkis death, the vet came (on my demand) to explain me what went wrong, during the operation. He gave me some stupid citations from the textbooks, but what really happened – he didnt know. I cannot exactly remember my words then, but I do remember his words- please Danijela dont, I have to live from this work.

Soon afterwards, he came again, and he brought a sack of my cats favorite food. My ex boyfriend took it while I was laying in the bad and crying.I couldnt stand to see this man and I would threw him and the sack out,but when I got up it was too late so I gave away a sack of food to my friend, who also has cats. Perhaps it was an act of -cleansing conscience- of the incompetent doctor who commited a medical crime? The agony of grief is still present. Its impossible to describe in few lines what all three of us were and still are going through. Almost every day I am soaked in tears.

A 6 month ago, I reported the doctor to the veterinarian inspection, but i still havent got an answer. Despite of my immense pain, I m resolute to go to the state institutions till justice hasnt been served. I realize that it wont bring Nikki back, but I do belive that it would help to bring the justice, not only for Nikki, but for all other animals that could, by the same accident, end up with the similar fate. With this kind of veterinarians, we, who love and take care of the animals, should study the School of Veterinary Sciences. Should this be a reality? Should the above mentioned expert, who doesnt know neither the diagnosis nor the surgery, continue to play the doctors?

At the end, Id like to add, the neuteralization might not be a natural, but certainly a human act towards the animals that were abandoned or thrown away from home where once were pets, before growing up and having a sexual instinct.

I reported this man three times to the veterinarian inspections-no respond.

I went to the police-didnt help.

I wrote to the president of Serbia and some ministers-no respond!

I ended up in the hospital at the beginning of this year couse my body crashed- I couldnt stand that tremendous pain any more.

Last month police finally called me couse of my letter to the Ministry of Internal Affairsrs(big thanx to them).I went there and make my statement.They told me that will call the vet and let me know what to do next.Yesterday(09.07.2009) I recived a call from the officer who told me that vet denied everythig and that Im wrong.Yet,he told them bunch af lies and they believed him!Of course-he is a MR.DOCTOR and Im a crazy woman who loves animals and fights for justice!

The following is a direct copy of the letter received on 16/02/10 by SAV, from Macedonian campaigners: 

Dear friend of animals,We ask for your help again in order to stop the massive killing of the homeless dogs and the inhuman treatment in Skopje, in the holding facility Vardarishte.  

Despite all efforts to change the condition, nothing has been changed for better, there is no consideration for the reactions by the Macedonian citizens who are disgusted from the principle of massive killings, disgusted from the standards for the dogs stay in the holding facility Vardarishte, disappointed from the functioning of the facility.   

   

Although as a public institution it is obligated to operate transparently in front of the citizens, it hides public data, it is closed for public and for visits, except for the total 6 hours per week (of which 3h on Friday, from 9-12h when people are at work), there is prohibition of free movement within it, the recording and photographing are the most strictly prohibited in order for the glamorous camp photo of the 21st century not to be seen.  

1. Currently, in the holding facility almost all small puppies are dying from freezing, pneumonia, viruses, because it is very cold and temperatures are below 0, and the holding facility is half closed type of facility, without any possibilities for working in winter!  

And the few dogs that have surgery done / sterilized, die because they are outside, freezing. The dogs lie on frozen water, frozen concrete, with no place to hide or get warm even for a moment. They continue washing the cages with heavy flows of water, without removing the dogs from cages. The dogs stay in the cages and die in tremendous torments!  

Simultaneously continues the practice of massive killing, officially around 70%, unofficially much more.  

 

2. People who catch dogs are completely incompetent, rude bullies (with the exception of maximum 5 out of 36 dog catchers). Hunting massively, saying that there won’t be any dog on the streets, not even leaving the dogs that are quiet and for whom the people take care of, vaccinated, sterilized….They say that it has been ordered and that every stray dog is to be caught – believe it, there is massacre and genocide, and only in Skopje there are around 10 000 homeless dogs! 

 

3. The dog-catchers also carry bats while catching, going in 8 teams, in three shifts, with unmark vehicles, massively and roughly catching a part of the dogs, and part of the dogs they don’t even take them to the holding facility but surely kill them in other places – for this we testimonials by citizens whose dogs have been caught and who had gone the same day to look for their dogs.However, the dog-catcher have been telling them that their dogs had not been caught (despite the photographs of the dogs being caught) or that they have been adopted, of course, without giving them information about location!  

4. The latest strategy in the holding facility is that on every cage they put papers on which it is written that the dog is too aggressive – we claim that it is a disgusting lie in almost all cases, because they never want to say who concretely (including name, analysis and evaluation) has put the paper.Believe me, almost all dogs marked like this, even those who are so dear, peaceful, social, with randomly written label – ‘AGGRESSIVE’  to justify the killing, declared without any official document to show, official evaluation by competent person.  

 
    

  

    

 This is the main excuse for the death of almost 90% of caught dogs, dogs that we didn’t manage to save.
  

Despite all our reactions, calls, meetings with the authorities, organized protest (under the slogan No to Bloody Skopje), we fail to stop or change anything, we have never succeeded anything because obviously this is a fixed defined “strategy” for solving the problem of excessive dogs population.  

 There is no holding facility on the entire Macedonian territory, where the CNR program should performed! Instead, here rules the system of massive poisoning, dog tournaments, torture, murder with guns.  

Please help us in any way, please start to put pressure once and for all to put an end to the violent and extremely cruel principle – we will do everything for this to be stopped, everything that you think that could and should be done. We ask for your support because without assistance from abroad, the struggle for salvation and life of over 10 000 dogs in Skopje, and many more in other places in Macedonia, is lost in advance.

Vet: Gray’s horses were ‘appallingly thin’

A VET has likened some of the ‘appallingly thin’ horses, ponies and donkeys owned by farmer James Gray to survivors of Belsen or Auschwitz concentration camps.

Paul Jepson, veterinary surgeon at The Horse Trust’s Home for Rest for Horses, examined 14 equines taken into the charity’s care at Speen, near Princes Risborough.
He told a court: “One gets quite used to seeing scruffy ponies but I was quite shocked when I saw these animals – shocked an appalled to be honest. What came to mind was the visions one sees on the television of Belsen and Auschwitz.

“The animals I was looking at, they struck me as appallingly thin but I think, overwhelmingly, the apathy they were exhibiting, that struck me the most.
“My stable manager, who is quite a hard nut, actually cried when she saw these animals, and that is unusual.”

Mr Jepson, who has 38 years experience and is a former director of veterinary services for the Ministry of Defence, also spoke of the progress made by the animals after they were seized from Gray’s farm in Chalk Lane, Hyde Heath, in January 2008. His evidence was part of appeal proceedings held at Bicester Magistrates Court, Oxfordshire, which is sitting as Aylesbury Crown Court.

James Gray, 46, his wife Julie, 42, and their daughters Cordelia, 21, of Spindles Farm, Chalk Lane, Hyde Heath, and Jodie, 27, of Park Road, Ashford, Middlesex, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, were last year found guilty of failing to ensure protected animals’ welfare needs were met.

Gray and the teenage defendant were also found guilty of nine counts of causing unnecessary suffering under the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act. More than 100 horses were removed from the farm in January 2008 in one of the RSPCA’s biggest investigations.

He told Judge Christopher Tyrer, who hearing the appeal with two magistrates, on Monday: “Within four hours their demeanour had changed significantly. They started taking a real interest in their surroundings.”

When asked by Michael Fullerton, defending, whether the equines’ thinness was because they were still growing, Mr Jepson said: “I do not accept the body condition of these animals is due to some quirky growth phase or directly due to parasitism.”

Petition  ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

Dear Sir or Madam,

with big dismay this news from Romania walks around in Europe.

 
During an interview was suggested by Mr. Mihai Atanasoaei, prefect of Bucharest that the only way to handle with the street animal problem, would be to kill again.
Large parts of your population feel disturbed by the street dogs.
It is scandalous to even consider, to legalize slaughtering again completely instead of seeking for other alternatives.
I point out to you the fact that, partly extremely brutal slaughtering methods are carried out since decades in South and East Europe without solving this problem.

One single bitch can generate in 5 years approx. 2700 descendants!
Hence, the only logical solution is the realisation of a consequently castration programme.

At the same time has to be considered that the protection of animals can create also an economically positive aspect.
The occupation “animal keeper” would create jobs at animal homes and contribute to the reduction of unemployment.
As a teaching field a clarification with a deferential and responsible contact with other living beings would take place which also contains the creation of new jobs.

Unfortunately, Great Britain with his killing methods is stated as an example for imitation, but one forget quite obviously that the UK has no problems with street animals in such magnitudes.

I would like to point out Hungary to you, because the situation there corresponds to the Romanian.

  • Hungary began in autumn, 2009 a state castration programme
  • Hungary will introduce “protection of animals” as a school subject
  • Hungary will built up “animal care” as an official occupational picture

The authorities in Hungary are certainly willing to stand aside to a neighbouring country in an advisory capacity.

 
Moreover, numerous animal welfare organisations in Romania and other EU countries are active and willing to perform assistance if your country would admit it.
Long-term seen the problem of the stray animals would be solved and Romania would be able to pursue good and responsible animal welfare.
I expect from politicians of a member state of the EU the readiness to inform themselves about this subject instead of falling back into old practise which did not prove itself.
In the name of humanity and the respect compared with other living beings I ask you to refrain from the planned law changes and to consider alternatives which are worthy to an EU member country in 2010.
Homicides are not!
