America‘s wolves need our help!

America’s wolves were nearly eradicated in the 20th century. Now, after a remarkable recovery in parts of the country, our wolves are once again in serious danger.

Federal sharpshooters are preparing for aerial wolf killing in Northern Idaho.

In Montana, the anti-wolf Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife are offering a $100 bounty per dead wolf.

Wyoming is moving forward with a plan that would allow wolves to be shot on sight across much of the state, including in National Forests and in some of the best available gray wolf habitat in the state.

Politicians in the Southwest are preventing the release of Mexican gray wolves into the wild – despite critically low wolf numbers that threaten a second extinction in the wild for these rare wolves.

Wording:

To the president of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto. Mr. President, you can stop this. For the sake of Mexico you need to stop the “Torneo de Lazo” in Yucatan. To witness this level of violence promotes more violence. Your country is already punished by an ever increasing wave of violence. The people of Mexico are suffering this violence every day. Tourism in Mexico is suffering the effects of this violence by the decreasing numbers of tourist visiting Mexico because of it. Torneo de Lazo only adds to a tarnished image that you as president must improve. Besides repairing Mexico’s image this is the decent and humane thing to do. We expect you to do the right thing. The murder and torture of innocent animals should not be entertainment for your people. This is neither culture nor tradition, this is public, shameful sadism. The people who organize and participate in “Torneo de Lazo” must be sanctioned severely. This spectacle is horrible and cruel. Please stop it now.

Why this is important to me

The pain and suffering inflicted on the horses is immense. The fact that this is a “public event” witnessed by all, including children is very harmful to all. THIS EVENT TEACHES THAT VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY IS FUN.

They call it a feast. In the state of Yucatan, Mexico there is a “rodeo” type event called “Torneo de Lazo” where bulls ram horses and eviscerate them. THIS CAUSES A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF PAIN TO THE HORSES. These horses usually collapse and while still alive continue to get trampled by bulls and other horses during the length of this violent and cruel event where horsemen try to lasso the running, charging bulls (the bulls are specifically bred and trained to ram horses).

Although it is against the law, this is only in name. Mexico’s federal government as well as the local authorities do nothing to stop this. This event takes place state wide all year round.

Please demand the Mexican government to put and end to this barbaric event.

Captain Paul Watson:  Legal Victory in the Faroe Islands

The Danish Court in the Faroe Islands has ruled that the seizure of the British registered Sea Shepherd vessel “Spitfire” by the Danish Navy was illegal. The “Spitfire” has been ordered returned to Sea Shepherd U.K.

The Prosecutor has appealed the court’s decision and the court will decide tomorrow to accept or reject the appeal. The Faroe Islands police presently hold four Sea Shepherd boats. 1. Spitfire. 2. Loki. 3. B.S. Sheen. 4. Mike Galesi.

Sea Shepherd expects all the boats will be released as the charges are minor punishable by relative small fines and the boats are worth considerably more than the fines. Sea Shepherd will be pushing the issue of the deportation of Europeans from the Faroes with the European Parliament.

Sea Shepherd will also be challenging the European Parliament to demand compliance with European regulations protecting cetaceans as a condition for the Faroes to continue receiving subsidies from the European Union.

Great news! All across the United States, people who seriously abuse animal companions are more and more often receiving jail time rather than a slap on the wrist. While we’re not mentioned in this great first article link below, IDA frequently offers rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of animal abusers. We’ve had success as well. In one very recent instance, we offered a $2500 reward after 920 chickens were found bludgeoned to death on a California factory farm and the next day four people were arrested in connection with this crime.

Animal Experimenter Resigns in SHAME

They were left under heat lamps and heat pads for hours, completely forgotten by negligent staff and later found with third-degree burns. Their burns were so bad that their skin had peeled off and muscle was slipping off their bones.

Not only that, but while investigating this cruelty, PETA was able to snag proof that Charles Rupprecht, then-chief of the CDC’s rabies program, injected monkeys with a dangerous strain of rabies without protecting his staff from the disease.

The good news? Charles Rupprecht has been banned from all CDC animal laboratories and, because of PETA’s investigation, was forced to resign from his associate dean position at Ross University!

The animal abusers may run, but because of rock stars like YOU, they cannot hide. And PETA means business. The CDC’s negligence has been exposed to the world, and now we’re looking at you, National Institutes of Health.

Let’s make sure that no more monkeys ever suffer again. Tell the National Institutes of Health to STOP psychologically traumatizing baby monkeys now.

The second reading of Jim Fitzpatrick’s Bill to ban the use of wild animals in circuses was blocked on the 5th September in the House of Commons. This is common practice and something which is disappointing, but not unexpected.

The second reading has been rescheduled for the 17th October, and that day is fast approaching!

If you have not done so yet, please write to your MP to ask them to support the Bill at its rescheduled second reading on the 17th October.

Background to the Bill

On the 3rd September 2014, Jim Fitzpatrick MP brought forward his “Ten Minute Rule Bill” to ban the use of wild animals in English circuses.

The “first reading” carried out in Parliament is the first of a number of steps needed if we are to see Jim’s Bill become the long-awaited law which will see an end to the suffering of wild animals exploited by the circus industry. The Bill passed on that day to the second reading stage unopposed, which is promising news, but there is still much to be done

It is widely accepted that Bills introduced by backbench MPs are notoriously difficult to get onto the statute book so it is absolutely vital that we take every step possible to support the Bill before its second reading on the 17th October.

That’s why we are asking you to write immediately to your MP to ask them that they support Jim Fitzpatrick’s Bill to ban wild animal circuses.

Said CAPS Director, Liz Tyson:

“Despite promise after promise, the government has failed to come good for the animals still being exploited daily by UK circuses. This is an opportunity to make our voices heard. We know that you have written time and time again to officials on this issue but we need you to do it again. Please act now if you haven’t already”.

CAPS and campaign partners at the Born Free Foundation, British Veterinary Association and the RSPCA, along with other animal protection groups and individual campaigners, have worked to see this ban implemented for decades.

A public consultation in 2010 saw 95% of respondents calling for an end to the use of wild animals in circuses.

Silently, billions of bees are dying off and our entire food chain is in danger. Bees don’t just make honey — they are a giant, humble workforce, pollinating 75% of growing plants. But in days the US could move to ban the toxic pesticides that are killing them off.

We know we can get a ban — after a mega Avaaz campaign last year, the EU banned this group of poisons that multiple scientists blame for bees’ rapid demise.

Bees are vital to life on earth — every year pollinating plants and crops with an estimated $40bn value. Without immediate action to ensure bees’ continued pollination, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves and ⅓ of our food supply will be gone. 

Recent years have seen a steep global decline in bee populations — some bee species are already extinct and just in California — the biggest food producer in the US — beekeepers are losing a third of their bees each year. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. While some studies, often funded by the chemical companies, argue this may be due to a combination of factors including disease, habitat loss and toxic chemicals, powerful independent studies conclude neonicotinoid pesticides are to blame.

It is this startling evidence and super effective campaigning by Avaaz and partners that won the EU ban. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required by Congress to regulate toxins, but under the influence of big chemical companies, for years they’ve fudged the law. Now the White House’s ‘Pollinators Health Task Force’ could get the EPA to cancel the pesticides’ registration so they can’t be sold in the US. This is our chance!

The proposed event would take place every winter for five years, when wolves and other wildlife are most vulnerable out foraging for food in the snow and extreme cold.

This is not hunting; this is simply mass killing for fun based upon hatred and fear.

Dear Mark,

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is now seriously considering allowing a five-year predator-killing derby on our public lands in Idaho.

If you care about wolves and other wildlife as much as I do, please help by telling the (BLM) that you do not support a free-for-all killing spree on our public lands.

A “hunters’ rights” organization wants to hold this multi-year wolf and predator-killing derby on national public lands, including those being studied for designation as wilderness!

Turning wolf killing into a competitive sport is bad enough. But this proposed derby would also sweep many important species of predators and other wildlife in Idaho into its gun sights, rewarding the killing of wolves and others predators.

Last year’s wolf and coyote-killing derby, sponsored by this same group, included prizes for killing the most coyotes and killing the largest wolf. This is not hunting; this is simply mass-killing for fun based upon hatred and fear.

Events like these are the same kinds of barbaric extermination-era tactics that drove wolves to the brink of extinction in the Lower 48 in the first place! This is not modern wildlife management, and it has no place in our society.
