Serbia: October News From Cat Shelter ‘Felix’ – Winter Is Approaching.

Dear all;

Below is the latest news from Danica at Cat Shelter Felix.

This is a big ask, but if you are able to provide any financial help then it will be more than very much appreciated.  We are currently trying different other ways to get in much needed financial help so that all the building repairs can be sorted and paid for before the winter really arrives, but some of these applications are being delayed.

With over 20 new cats arriving at the shelter, this means that there are 20 additional mouths to feed, as well as paying for the building work.  So please give anything you can; we do not like to have to ask for money, but with Winter just around the corner, every penny will be spent very wisely helping the cats and paying for essential repair  work at the shelter.

“ ……… good will but we had no other choice, so we ended up with a big debt which I hope we’ll be able to pay off some day. It’s been said a long time ago that fortune favors the daring…

More than 20 new kitties have arrived at the shelter over this year, so there’re many more mouths to feed, which wouldn’t be such a problem if it wasn’t for the enormous costs of shelter repairs.”

Here is a message from Danica:

Dear friends and supporters everywhere;

”With winter rapidly approaching, we are racing against time to get the shelter ready for the cold months ahead.  The new insulation layer has been added to the interior walls of the indoor enclosures, the exterior doors of the cat rooms have been strengthened and everything is hopefully strong enough to endure whatever nasty weather comes along.

Our brilliant plans of fixing up the shelter completely have become only a partial reality, as we haven’t succeeded in raising enough funds. Or rather, everything was in worse shape than we thought at the beginning. Even back then when the repairs first started, I was very much aware that we were biting off more than we could chew but I also knew that we must try to fix as much as possible or we wouldn’t have a chance to get through another winter. The entire ordeal has lasted for months and even now it’s far from finished but at least we’re facing the future with hope. It may have sounded risky to start such a huge project relying only on personal means and other peoples’ good will but we had no other choice, so we ended up with a big debt which I hope we’ll be able to pay off some day. It’s been said a long time ago that fortune favors the daring…

More than 20 new kitties have arrived at the shelter over this year, so there’re many more mouths to feed, which wouldn’t be such a problem if it wasn’t for the enormous costs of shelter repairs. I’ve already reconciled to the fact that most of the people who find a cat or a kitten can’t keep it, but instead try to find another temporary or permanent home for that animal, and forget about it instantly as soon as it becomes someone else’s worry. Out of more than a dozen people whose kitties I’ve taken in this summer, only a few have ever asked about them. What do you know! Nihil novi – nothing new under the sun.

All of the kitties in the shelter are safe and loved for life, but they do need help. I’m not posting dramatic pictures, my cats aren’t skinny and sick generally, they do not fend for themselves, their lives aren’t hanging by a thread but their future depends on donations, and the kindness of strangers, nevertheless. While every appeal for help can pull on people’s heartstrings, it’s obvious that everyone is more compelled to donate when the animals look horrible and it’s somewhat comprehensive.

Felix kitties are fattish and relaxed and don’t seem to have a care in the world but on the other hand we all know that cats are supposed to live for a very long time and need constant care and food regardless of what they look like. My kitties’ lives weren’t always a bed of roses and all of them have come a long way since the days they fought to survive somewhere out there, alone, abused and utterly unimportant…Please, help them stay happy and healthy now that they finally know how it feels to have a home!”

Thank you so much for helping my kitties!

Warm wishes

Danica

Norway: New Horrific Images in a Decisive Year for the Fur Industry – Close Them ALL Down !

New horrific images in a decisive year for the fur industry

Once again horrendous animal suffering has been exposed on Norwegian fur farms. After ten years of delay, the fur industry has failed in its last attempt to save its own skin.

Photos from our investigation

See a small collection of photos collected during our 2012 investigation.

Link for images provided at very end.

The fur industry has been given countless opportunities to “improve animal welfare”, says Odd Harald Eidsmo from Animal Protection Norway. – Yet for the fourth time since 2008 we are able to uncover gross and widespread animal cruelty on Norwegian fur farms. The fur industry has failed completely in its attempt to improve the conditions for the animals. Animal Protection Norway and Network for Animal Freedom today reveal new horrific images from Norwegian fur farms.

24 fur farms from Troms in the north to Agder in the south have been inspected unannounced during the summer and the autumn. Thousands of pictures and hours of video documentation show that mink and foxes suffer on Norwegian fur farms every single day.

The government must shut down the fur farms

The inspections document how the fur industry’s attempts to clean up have been fruitless: Injured and suffering fur animals were found on all the inspected fur farms. Some of the findings were animals with legs, tails and ears bitten off, painful bite wounds and compulsive behaviour. On a farm in Hedmark, fox pups were living in a cage with their dead, rotting mother. In Telemark the inspectors found six mink with their hind legs chewed off. In Trøndelag several mink lived with severe flesh wounds on their heads from being attacked by other mink over a prolonged period of time.

-In 2002 a united parliament supported the claim that the fur industry had to achieve considerable improvements in order to avoid being shut down, says Per Arne Tøllefsen, press secretary of Network for Animal Freedom. Ten years on, the animals are still living in the same shameful conditions. We now expect the government to initiate the dismantling of the industry.

A ministerial committee is currently evaluating whether the industry should be banned in Norway.  YES – NOW – IMMEDIATELY – STOP THE ABUSE !!

*** WARNING *** – Extreme Animal Suffering Shown in Video Footage on the Following Link:

http://www.burgerkingcruelty.com/

Are your Burger King purchases funding horrific animal abuse? A new Mercy For Animals investigation reveals sadistic animal abuse at a major Burger King dairy supplier in Idaho that has led to three workers being charged with cruelty to animals.

This undercover investigation documented:

Workers and management viciously beating and shocking cows and violently twisting their tails in order to deliberately inflict pain

Workers and management repeatedly shocking a downed cow and then dragging her by her neck using a chain attached to a tractor

Extremely unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including feces covered floors that cause cows to regularly slip, fall, and injure themselves

Sick or injured cows suffering from open wounds, broken bones and infected udders left to suffer without proper veterinary care

More Information

In August 2012, an undercover investigator with Mercy For Animals documented heartbreaking animal abuse at Bettencourt Dairies, a major Burger King dairy supplier, including:

Workers and management viciously beating, kicking, punching, and shocking cows and violently twisting their tails in order to deliberately inflict pain

Workers and management dragging a downed cow by her neck using a chain attached to a tractor

Extremely unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including feces-covered floors that cause cows to regularly slip, fall, and injure themselves

Sick or injured cows suffering from open wounds, broken bones, and infected udders left to suffer without proper veterinary care.

Expert Opinions

After reviewing the undercover footage, Dr. Temple Grandin, the world’s leading expert in farmed-animal welfare, stated: “The atrocious treatment of cows at this dairy is an indicator of a total lack of management supervision.”

In a joint statement, Dr. Bernard Rollin, a distinguished professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University, and William Wailes, a dairy specialist and head of the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University, declared: “Of the dozens of such videos that we have watched, this one was the most horrific and the most upsetting. … Never have we seen such outright sadistic pleasure taken by workers in animal suffering.”

Ditch Dairy

Far from leading the carefree lives portrayed in the dairy industry’s “happy cow” commercials, cows exploited and killed for Burger King’s cheese endure lives of near constant misery and deprivation.

Treated as mere milk-producing machines, these intelligent and social animals suffer almost unimaginable abuse from the time they are born and ripped from their mothers’ sides until they are so physically worn out from repeated pregnancies and constant milk production that they are sold for slaughter.

Although horrific cruelty and violence are standard practice for Burger King’s cheese suppliers, caring consumers can help end the needless suffering of cows and other farmed animals by choosing any number of healthy and humane plant-based alternatives to milk, cheese, and ice cream. Visit ChooseVeg.com to learn more.

http://www.burgerkingcruelty.com/act-now.php

Act Now

Ditch Dairy! – Every time we sit down to eat, we can choose compassion over cruelty. Adopting a diet free of dairy-as well as meat and eggs-is perhaps the single most important and powerful action you can take to prevent needless cruelty to animals.

Visit ChooseVeg.com for helpful tips, recipes, and more information about choosing healthy and humane plant- based alternatives to milk, cheese, and ice cream.

Tell Burger King to Stop Torturing Cows – Urge Burger King to immediately implement meaningful animal welfare standards that prohibit dairy suppliers from kicking, punching, and shocking cows, dragging and abusing “downed” cows, and painfully cutting off cows’ tails, and to require facilities to provide a safe, clean, and sanitary environment for cattle.

Subject           MFA Investigation Sends Shock Waves Through Dairy Industry – Prompts Historic Change

Date                11.10.2012 14:12

Dear Friend,

A breaking Mercy For Animals investigation of Bettencourt Dairies http://www.burgerkingcruelty.com/  – a cheese supplier to Burger King – was shown on news outlets across the country and overseas yesterday, exposing millions to the harsh reality of abuse inflicted upon animals imprisoned by the dairy industry.

Our hidden cameras revealed workers viciously beating cows, and repeatedly shocking a downed cow and dragging her by her neck, and sick and injured cows suffering from open wounds, broken bones, and infected udders left to suffer without proper veterinary care.

As a result of our video, three workers—including a manager of the dairy—have been charged with criminal cruelty to animals.

But that is not all.

The corporations buying products from Bettencourt have taken notice! Our investigation has prompted Kraft to ban the cruel and unnecessary practice of tail docking from its supply chain.

This is historic news.

Kraft now stands as the first major corporation to require a mandatory phase-out of this abhorrent practice that causes immeasurable and lifelong suffering to dairy cows.

And, in a statement issued yesterday, Wendy’s announced that it intends to sever all ties with Bettencourt Dairies after being “appalled by the images depicted in the video.”

At MFA, we believe that all animals deserve to live lives free from harm and suffering. So we continue to take on multibillion-dollar industries that profit off the abuse of animals—and we win.

With your help MFA will continue to seek justice for those who suffer in silence behind the locked doors of factory farms.

Your contributions allow MFA to continue to send our brave undercover investigators into America’s factory farms and capture on hidden camera the despicable truths that animal abuse industries work so diligently to hide. Our work in corporate outreach and legal advocacy builds on our investigations and wages wars against cruel factory farms that result in critical and groundbreaking change for farmed animals.

Please lend your support and be a voice for innocent, suffering, sentient beings like the dairy cows of Bettencourt Dairies, who rely on MFA’s lifesaving work.

http://www.burgerkingcruelty.com/experts.php

Experts

Independent, nationally and world-renowned academic and professional experts in farmed animal welfare and veterinary medicine reviewed the video footage from MFA’s undercover investigation. Below are some of their statements:

Temple Grandin, PhD, PAS

Dr. Grandin is considered the world’s leading expert on farmed-animal welfare. She is an associate professor of livestock behavior at Colorado State University and an animal welfare advisor to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the meat industry. In response to this investigation, Dr. Grandin states:

I watched the dairy video and the abuse of the downed cow with electric prods and dragging with the tractor was horrific animal abuse. If this abusive treatment had occurred at a slaughter plant, the plant would have been shut down by the USDA. The employees were constantly beating and kicking animals as hard as they could. The atrocious treatment of cows at this dairy is an indicator of a total lack of management supervision.

Bernard E. Rollin, PhD

Dr. Rollin is a distinguished professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University and is well known internationally for his over 30 years of work in animal welfare. He was a major architect of federal laws protecting laboratory animals, and has written two books on farmed-animal welfare. He serves on the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production and is an expert witness on animal welfare issues in the United States and abroad.

William Wailes, BS

Mr. Wailes is an extension dairy specialist for the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University. He is also an internationally renowned dairy expert, who has owned and been involved with dairy farms all of his life.

A joint statement by Dr. Rollin and Mr. Wailes states:

Never have we seen such outright sadistic pleasure taken by workers in animal suffering, including gratuitous shocking of the cows (quintessentially sweet and gentle creatures); dragging them with chains; and in what is arguably the worst sequence, one worker savagely beating the cows with a cane, while laughing and screaming maniacally.

The overall impression is of a Hieronymous Bosch vision of hell for cows. The physical conditions, flooded walkways and slick footing, completely replicate the uncaring attitude of owners and managers, as do the docked tails of the cows, a procedure now recognized as useless, painful, and stressful.

[T]he only way to stop such outrageous behavior is to serve notice that society will not tolerate it. This means…that not only sadistic workers must be prosecuted and serve jail time, but so too the owners and managers, since they clearly demonstrated that the normal human motivations of animal productivity and economic returns do not move them.

Debra Teachout, DVM, MVSc

Dr. Teachout is a practicing veterinarian who graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. She also holds an advanced degree in veterinary clinical pathology from Western College of Veterinary Medicine and has completed additional coursework in farmed-animal welfare. Dr. Teachout states:

In this video the animal handling is so brutal and callous in its obvious intent to cause pain, fear and injury, that it is frankly astonishing and disturbing. The conduct of the workers toward the cows is deplorable.

The observed culture of cruelty at this farm has obviously been allowed to flourish for so long, brutality has become the norm. These cows are serving as targets of vicious intent to harm in a management system that is either absent or complicit in a facility culture that exudes violence and abuse. The cows on this farm are suffering from pain, injury and fear. Their welfare has not only been ignored, it has been threatened by abusive personnel and filthy unsafe living conditions. I have rarely seen such brutal treatment of farm animals, and this farm must be shut down immediately. Those responsible for the cruel treatment of these cows must be held accountable and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They should also never be allowed to be responsible for or work around animals again.

Armaiti May, DVM, CVA

Dr. May is a practicing veterinarian with experience treating farmed animals, who received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. Dr. May states:

The level of disregard for animals shown and the dangerous conditions at this facility are outrageously appalling. My overall impression is that the facility where this footage was taken is that it lacks regard for basic welfare of animals in its care and does not have proper supervision of its workers. In addition, there are poor sanitation practices and unsafe working conditions which endanger both human and animal health and safety. I recommend that charges of animal cruelty be brought against the workers involved and that the farm be shut down for cruel treatment of animals and lack of proper oversight of its workers.

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

Dr. Balcombe is an ethologist with bachelors and masters degrees in biology, and a doctorate in animal behavior from the University of Tennessee. He is the author of four books on animal behavior, as well as more than 40 book chapters and peer-reviewed journal papers. Dr. Balcombe states:

This footage shows grossly negligent and savagely cruel treatment of dairy cows by workers. The conditions are treacherously slippery, leading to injuries, downed cows, and workers who beat and torment the animals to try to get them to move. This is a concentration camp for miserable cows. It is totally unacceptable. The operation should be shut down immediately and the workers charged with animal cruelty.

Lee Schrader, DVM

Dr. Schrader is a practicing veterinarian, who obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Schrader has over 35 years of experience working with animals, particularly animals with serious, difficult-to-diagnose disorders. Dr. Schrader states:

The brutality and viciousness of the workers in this facility toward the cows is stunning. The animals are electrically shocked, beaten with canes, kicked and jumped on, and subjected to aggressive extension of their tails, resulting in signs of severe pain and fear in the cows. … The treatment of these cows is sadistic and unconscionable.

The treatment of these cows is brutally inhumane. The workers are cruel and obviously do not know how to handle cattle correctly. The filthy, wet barn results in severe stress and injuries to the cows. This facility should be closed immediately.

Serbia: End 08, Start 09 2012. Latest News From Danica At Felix Shelter – Lots Of Necessary Work Which Costs Money – Can You Help With A Donation ?

Hi everyone;

Here is the latest news and photos from Danica.

Apologies as this info was sent a few weeks ago in lete September, but things have been very busy for us here in the UK regarding live animal exports from Ramsgate harbour.  We have success here and so now we hope to catch up on other business.  Mark – SAV.

————————————————————————-

Here is what Danica has to say:

“The new roof eaves are almost finished and the only thing left is to apply a protective coating of paint and that’s it! My kitties are already seeking shade under the eaves and seem to really enjoy the benefits of roof overhangs. Roof repairs are also being brought to an end. The insulation quilting has been put in place, the roof itself is covered with roof tiles and the gutters have been placed around the roof as well.

The strengthening of the roof structure was done by installing additional supports that I hope will be strong enough to endure another winter. Nonetheless, the entire roof needs to be replaced next year so as to save us from worrying about another heavy snow burden in the future.

The new septic tank hole has been dug down to a depth which permits alignment to the existing sewer and the septic tank itself has been built up. The walls of the excavation serve as the outside layer; a removable concrete slab has been placed over the tank. This new septic tank will be connected with the old one by a pipe.  Solid waste will continue to accumulate in the old septic tank, while the liquid will flow through the pipe into the second tank. The liquid will then drain through holes in the walls and then into the soil. The entire sewer line has been removed and replaced with a new one. The old drain pipes from the kitchen were too narrow and too low, with insufficient fall in, so they have also been replaced and attached to the main sewer line. Now the kitchen and toilet drain pipes run through the newly built manhole and into the main line. To accomplish that, it was necessary to dig all the way from the bathroom to the kitchen drain. The kitchen sink drain pipes will also need to be replaced with new ones.

More sand, cement, gravel and outside tiles have been purchased in order to cover a new concrete path with paving tiles to make it more durable. The entire house needs to be plastered and whitewash applied as well to protect the exterior walls. Nothing has been done as of yet in regard to the path that leads from the side entrance into the yard to the cats’ indoor facility. There’s just not enough money and all of these repairs have already seemed to last forever, not to mention that total costs have escalated to two times higher than first expected.

We simply cannot stop halfway through! Winter will be here again before we know it. Please, help us finish the repairs and make our project come true before the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Whatever amount you can give in the way of a donation, no matter how small or large is very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any much needed help you may be able to provide!”

Please, check out our project on betterplace.org. http://www.betterplace.org/en/projects/9425-repairing-the-damaged-cat-shelter and join us in our effort if you possibly can!

I’m truly grateful to all of you for caring !

Felix kitties are sending kitty love, purrs and kisses your way!

Egypt (Yet Again): Donkeys Electrocuted and Killed At Faculty of Veterinary (most probably Mansoura University) – Cairo.

The following message was sent to us:

This picture had been shared by our friends from S.P.A.R.E – Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt – with the following comment:

“That’s what happened in faculty of veterinary (most probably Mansoura University) the vets posted the photo today it was deleted … we are speechless about this cruelty … Already animals activists sue Cairo University (Fac of veterinary) for abusing animals (torturing dogs & killing a donkey with electricity)”

For the moment we do not know what exactly happened to these donkeys.

A while back students from the University of Cairo had reported that the staff of the Faculty Of Veterinary Medicine threw dogs off the third floor after experimenting on them, and that they had abused and electrocuted a little donkey to death.

Information is compiled in the following link. WARNING: videos are graphic (as you can imagine):

As said before, we know no details for the moment. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

For now, we kindly ask you to share this picture with as many as you can – perhaps someone can provide more information.

Thank you in advance.

Serbia: Search Now On To Find And Prosecute Illegal Serbian and Italian Bird Hunters.

Serbian campaigners are now fighting Serbian and Italian hunters who in the past 3 days have killed around 450 birds as can be seen in the photographs.

These birds are protected by Serbian nature laws; but after the police arrested the hunters, word came from higher up (government ?) that the hunters should be allowed to go free, and take all the birds bodies with them.

The Italian hunters also had in their possession some illegal arms.

On 5/9, the police and inspectors have gone to Bujanovac town, but the Italian hunters have already gone and taken the dead birds with them.  Possibly they have gone to a region either North or South of Bujanovac.

By Serbian law, the hunters must be arrested and punished – as they are killing protected birds.  Campaigners think that because of the corruption within Serbia; the hunters will escape pubishment.

Campaigners sent their first charge to the authorities on 1/9/2012 as the police and inspectors did not act in agreement with the law.  Initially the police did, but they were then informed from higher to stop their actions.

It is thought that the hunters may have gone to Jagodina, a Southern Serbian city, or possibly to Natalinci – a South Serbian village where it is known there is a hunters centre.

Further actions are ongoing but will not be published at the moment for obvious reasons.

The following shows the charges made by the campaigners.

I dalje čine krivično delo  i ubijaju strogo zaštićene vrste ptica.

Direktoru policije, gosp. Miloradu Veljoviću

Uprava kriminalističke  policije , Načelniku

~ molimo vas da postupate hitno radi obezbeđivanja materijalnih dokaza  izvršenog krivičnog dela I naredite načelnicima PU Vranje I  PS Bujanovac da postupaju po zakonu ~

02.09.2012.god.

Predmet  HITNA Prijava I Zahtev da se obezbede I sačuvaju materijalni dokazi izvršenog krivičnog dela koje se desilo na području nadležnosti PS Bujanovac, 2 Italijanska državljana su u krivolovu napravila masakr strogo zaštićenih vrsta ptica, a materijalni dokazi – pobijene strogo zaštićene vrste ptica mogu nestati zbog nepostupanja načelnika PS Bujanovac I PU Vranje I  postoji opasnost da materijalni dokazi izvršenog  krivičnog dela nestanu.

HITNO!!! MOLIMO VAS!!!!

2.      2 velike kartonske kutije , pune municije,  kalibra 12,

China: 800 Caged Cats Rescued Successfully in Tianjin China

Tianjin Cat Rescue – 800 caged cats rescued successfully in Tianjin China

On August the 31st , 800 cats were successfully rescued in Tianjin, China.

In the early morning, volunteers of Tianjin Stray Animal Rescue Group discovered a place where cat-nappers were keeping stolen cats waiting to be transported. Through social networking like Weibao, more volunteers were able to get to the location and the police were called to help rescue the cats.

The police came in the afternoon. There were 40 cages, with over 20 cats in each cage. Some cats had already died due to the horrible conditions; some had given birth to babies, all of which had died. They were cramped inside small cages without any food and water. In the end, more than 50 cats had already passed away over the whole ordeal.

After negotiations between the police and local animal quarantine officers, all of the cats were released to the volunteers. They were moved with the volunteers to a shelter, where they were switched into more than 100 larger cages with water and food. The volunteers worked tirelessly over night and over the next few days.

Our thanks and appreciation goes towards all volunteers and helpers in this rescue; it’s wonderful to see almost all of the stolen cats be saved. Thanks to the local police and animal quarantine officers and media for their support in helping the volunteers save the cats. There is still a lot of work to go; and food and medication has been donated from loving individuals for the cats.

Many thanks again to everyone involved.
