Saw this on FB and reposted it on my wall – this morning when I went to sign onto FB I was blocked and got the message that they removed my post (this post) and that I violated FB rules…

This is all I have – this thug needs to be found and removed from the streets

Spain: The Matador Who Realised What He Was Doing Was Wrong.

Matador who realised what he was doing.

This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career.

He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight.

He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights. (The look on this bull’s face says it all for me. Even grievously wounded by picadors, he did not attack this man.)

Torrero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment:

“And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer – because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven.

I felt like the worst shit on earth.” “Cows are amongst the gentlest of breathing creatures; none show more passionate tenderness to their young when deprived of them; and, in short, I am not ashamed to profess a deep love for these quiet creatures.

Alero Munera says: “Chiquilín, another repentant bullfighter, claims to have seen bulls weeping. He says that he cannot kill even a fly nowadays. I take my hat off to that man. He’s a real hero who learned his lesson through reason and thinking.” – Thomas de Quincey

Further to our recent post (07/07/12) regarding the latest disturbing photographs (as shown in this post) from a dairy farm in Rusko Selo, Northern Serbia:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/serbia-same-old-farm-exposed-again-and-an-ineffective-ministry-so-what-changes/

SAV have been working with our friends and expert global farm animal welfare campaigners at Uk based Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) about this particular situation.

CIWF Links:

http://www.ciwf.org.uk/

http://www.ciwf.org.uk/about_us/default.aspx

At the end of last week, we provided copies of all the most recent photographs from Rusko Selo to Phil Brooke, the Welfare Development Manager at Compassion in World Farming.  Phil kindly gave his help and advice on this very same farm in the past when we uncovered the situation back in 2010::

Previous links:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/serbia-farm-anima

Again Phil has provided us with a formal CIWF statement which has today (10/07/12) been provided to Serbian campaigners to use and forward on to Serbian government Ministry officials – the very people who should be ensuring that situations like these seen at this farm never happen.

Below is a full transcript of the statement made by Phil Brooke after reviewing the recent photographs and information provided by SAV and Serbian welfare campaigners.

As Serbia is looking towards EU membership in the near future, we would like to draw attention to one particular part of the statement made by Phil; this being:

The squalid conditions these cattle are being kept in plainly fail to meet basic welfare or hygiene standards as laid down by Council of Europe Convention and EU Directive which require that animals are prevented avoidable suffering and kept in conditions which avoid risks to their healthIt is clear beyond doubt that what is shown in these photographs does not comply with existing EU legislation, and consequently could impact Serbian accession to the EU”.

We ask anyone who has concerns like us about this farm, to e mail the following, who are all associated with responsibility for ensuring animal welfare; we would suggest that you copy some photographs and the part of the statement given abobe, and mail this to the addresses given:

predsednikvladesrbije@gov.rs;  zoran.marinkovic@minpolj.gov.rs ;
zoran.micovic@minpolj.gov.rs; s.celebicanin@minpolj.gov.rs,
office@minpolj.gov.rs;  vetuprava@minpolj.gov.rsmuprs@mup.gov.rs

If a nation is looking at future EU membership, then it must do a lot better than to allow animals to be kept in non-EU standards.  There is no further statement to be made – Serbia needs to improve big time !

We know that conditions on this Serbian farm are not a ‘one off’ – similar conditions are regular all over the country.  We are now working with serbian campaigners to identify and expose these other facilities.

Statement Serbian cattle July 2012

CIWF Statement

Unsanitary Conditions for Serbian dairy cattle at Rusko selo 1st July 2012

In 2010 we issued a statement relating to the environmental conditions for dairy cattle in this farm. We stated that is was clear from the photographs that these cattle were being kept in squalid, filthy, unhealthy and completely unacceptable conditions. The cattle in the pictures shown were standing in water contaminated with excrement. The matted nature of their coats shows that they were unable to keep clean and had clearly been in these conditions for some time.

We are disturbed to discover that in 2012, conditions do not seem to have improved. Pictures from the farm show the cattle lying in their own manure. Unsurprisingly, their coats were dirty due to being forced to lie in their own excrement. Contact between their udders and faeces and urine and dirt on the teats increases the risk of infection by a range of micro-organisms including e coli. These can cause mastitis which is a risk to the health and welfare of the cattle as well as to the health of people who consume dairy products from this farm.  These are also conditions in which flies are likely to breed with further risks of disease spread.

In the event of rain it seems clear that the lying area would again become waterlogged. Wet feet can lead to a range of hoof conditions and increased risk of lameness.

Cattle need a comfortable, clean and well-drained area to lie down, receive adequate rest and remain healthy. The squalid conditions these cattle are being kept in plainly fail to meet basic welfare or hygiene standards as laid down by Council of Europe Convention and EU Directive which require that animals are prevented avoidable suffering and kept in conditions which avoid risks to their health.

It is clear beyond doubt that what is shown in these photographs does not comply with existing EU legislation, and consequently could impact Serbian accession to the EU. In the event of Serbia’s accession, these photographs could form the basis of a formal complaint to be made to the Legal Affairs Dept of the EU associated with animal welfare.

Serbia: Same Old Farm Exposed Again And An Ineffective Ministry – So What Changes ?

We are currently working with Serbian campaigners regarding latest pictures from a facility which is old news to us.

Please see our past links:

We are also linking with farm animal welfare organizations here in the Uk, who will be further assisting us once we have more information from Serbia.

Nothing much has changed from our articles of 2010.

The Serbian Ministry is failing Serbian animals.  Despite conditions shown above, they have informed us that we should not be pressurizing them !

This was in 2010 when the statement was made.  It is now summer 2012, and you can see how conditions have changed when they are left to work at their own pace.

Further information and contact details of where to write will be published once we have clarified a few issues.

In the meantime, here are just a few photographs (above and below) taken in the last week relating to the farm of which we have very serious concerns.  The first photo confirms the date of pictures – 7/7/2012.

EU: Some Good News Regarding Long Distance Live Animal Transport – and Other Things !

We (in Europe) have had what appears to be some promising progress regarding live animal transport.

I am especially happy with this news as lstopping long distance transport for live animals has been my major campaign work for the last 23 years or so !

————————————————————

Link below – This is the Uk Government’s view on the Commission’s proposals on live transport – this was discussed at a recent Ag Council (where the Dutch were the only country objecting to the proposals).   For our non European friends; the Dutch are the largest animal transporters in Europe, as our work in the Uk for years has shown.  So it comes as no surprise to us that the Dutch would be a nation that objects to the new proposals – the only nation to object.

 ukgovviewtransport

Interestingly the Uk, whilst supporting the Commission’s proposals on enforcement; have put in for better protection (ie journey times) for calves and horses.  Council agreement is due soon on this so we will have to wait to see what the final Presidency and Council conclusions are.

Calves are still exported from the Uk to mainland Europe, on a vessel (the ‘Joline’) operated by a Dutchman convicted and found guilty in a Uk court of no less than 6 animal welfare offences involving the transport of live farm animals.

Also, some great news from our friends at Compassion In World farming here in the Uk.  It reads:

Dear Mark,

The worst footage we have ever seen.

Last week, Compassion made the difficult decision to release some extremely disturbing footage of horrendous animal suffering at slaughterhouses and in transport. It reveals some of the worst animal cruelty that Compassion has ever seen.

Thousands of you responded to our urgent call for action and immediately put pressure on the OIE, who are responsible for international guidelines on transport and slaughter. Thank you to everyone who spoke out.

Our next step is to meet face-to-face with international policymakers who have the power to end such appalling practices. And, as a result of sharing the footage, we have now secured meetings with representatives of not just the OIE, but also the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, The World Bank and The European Commission.

By bringing these major bodies together we have a real chance to protect farm animals at the most vulnerable times of their life – such as during transport and at slaughter. Thank you again to everyone who helped us get to this position.

Recently it was reported that Creek Projects, a British company based in Cambridgeshire, had invested millions of pounds in a new foie gras facility in China where over 15 million geese were to be intensively farmed over a five-year period.

Following prompt action from Compassion and our friends at the Humane Society, we are delighted to report that operations at the foie gras factory farm have now been suspended. We will remain vigilant to ensure that this project does not rear its ugly head again – but in the meantime millions of animals are being saved from the horrifying force-feeding synonymous with foie gras production.

Ramsgate (Kent, England Exports) update. See photos Above – all from Ramsgate.

You can visit the website of the organisation which SAV founder Mark is also involved with – Kent Action Against Live Exports (KAALE); by visiting the KAALE website at  www.kaale.org.uk  – here you will find all the reports oof live farm animal shipments from the Kent port of ramsgate, Uk, to mainland Europe, as operated by convicted operator Mr. Onderwater of the Netherlands.

CIWF say:

Thank you to everyone who came along to the rally in Ramsgate on 20 May to mark the first anniversary of live animal exports through the town’s port. It was a very sad yet motivating day. Inspiring speeches were made by our own Director of Public Affairs, Dil Peeling, the RSPCA, and Thanet District Councillors – and it was wonderful to see so many people joining together to speak out against these cruel journeys.

And we have some good news in the EU campaign for an 8-hour limit on journey times for animals, which could effectively outlaw most live exports. Following the European Parliament’s endorsement of an 8-hour journey limit, EU Commissioner John Dalli agreed that Regulation 1/2005 is not sufficient to guarantee an acceptable level of welfare for animals during transport.

He announced that the Commission will propose a review of EU legislation that will include – among other things – a reduction of transport times. Now, the challenge is to make sure Commissioner Dalli sticks to his word and the review stays on track.

And finally, Positive news for pigs

Thank you so much to everyone who took our latest Project Pig action. You are helping to ensure that, when the EU sow stall ban comes into force on 1 January 2013, millions of pigs will no longer be forced to spend months on end in a cage.

As I write, 11 EU nations are still at risk of violating the ban, and we will not rest in our efforts to persuade farmers and politicians to implement this vital legislation. But the good news is that, with your support, Project Pig is making real progress.

When figures were first released, just seven nations expected to comply with the ban on time. Now, the EU Commission believes sixteen are set to be ready.

WARNING Hard Images !!!

It is 3 o’clock in the morning, Andrea comes back from a case where once again a dog has been poisoned.

He is very tired because it is getting more and more difficult to find vets who will treat the strays even though they have …no costs. (notice: the dog’s mouth has been tied closed to protect itself not to be cruel because the dog is in agony!!)

Part 2: you can hear and see how much this dog is suffering. Andrea reports that the dog has had an infusion and they hope he will survive. He provides the costs of course.

Then everything changes, the vet says she cannot keep the dog there because it is a stray and has no papers and therefore has no right to be in a clinic!! At 2 o’clock in the morning. Andrea reports there was an argument between the volunteers and the vet – he is going to officially report the incident!!!

Anyway the animal welfarists have to take the poor suffering dog with them.

Unfortunately at this hour they can’t find a clinic which will take over this case, so they spend the night with the dog in the car, hoping that the clinic will take over the treatment in the morning and that the dog survives the ordeal.

Andrea, who is pretty exhausted, finishes the video and says it would be a terrible blow if strays can no longer be treated because they have no papers and therefore no rights.

Please support WAHRO and the work of volunteers and don´t forget the local animal shelters.
