Illegal hare coursers find it’s a crushing experience

More than 100 hare coursers have been caught in Cambridgeshire this season – and 15 of their vehicles have been crushed.

The illegal sport attracts hundreds of hunters to the region from around the country during the hunting season which runs from August until April.

The high-stakes betting competition sees dogs unleashed and the animal that catches most hares in a day wins.

Yesterday, one car seized by police and ordered by the courts to be destroyed was smashed up at Welney Farms, off the A14 near Dry Drayton.

Officers from the Rural Community Action Team (RCAT) have held the Vauxhall Astra since catching three people hare coursing at Six Mile Bottom on August 20. Joseph Smith, 51, of Paddock Wood, Kent, William Smith, 42, of Willingham Avenue, Hastings, and Buddy Jarrett, 19, of Atterbury Close, Westerham, Kent, had travelled up to Cambridgeshire from East Sussex.

They were convicted at Ely Magistrates’ Court on January 6 and the car was ordered destroyed.

Smith and Kent were both fined £300, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. Both were also given a six-month driving ban. Jarrett was fined £100, ordered to pay £100 costs and £15 victim surcharge. He was given a three-month driving ban.

All had pleaded guilty to illegal hare coursing.

Pc Robin Smith, who was there to watch the car being crushed, said: “Since the start of the season in August we have caught 112 hare coursers. They come from around the country because of the flat land around here which means they get good views of the course.

“They bet on which dog kills the most hares in one day and there is a lot of money involved.”

“The victims of this crime are the landowners and farmers who can have crops and fencing destroyed when the hare coursers drive onto the land.”

“We take this type of crime very seriously and this should send out a strong message that anyone who comes to Cambridgeshire to hare course is in danger of having their car seized and subsequently crushed.”

SAV Launch First ‘Youtube’ Slideshow of Serbian Animal Suffering.

The first ‘Youtube’ Slideshow produced by SAV regarding the suffering of Serbian animals has now been posted.

This is another part of our campaign to get the Serbian government and authorities to enforce stray animal welfare legislation which has existed since 2005.

We are not asking the world; simply that the Serbian government and authorities make much more attempt to enforce existing Serbian nation legislation relating to the treatment of stray animals; a law which states that animals should be protected and not killed.

Showing the ‘enforcement of the national rule of law’ is a fundamental requirement that any future EU members states (seeking accession) should show.  Serbia wishes to join the EU but is not enforcing its laws with regard animal welfare.

SAV Letter to Ms. Jones.

Dear Ms Jones;

I am writing to you this short mail to ask please that you very seriously consider the request detailed in the letter / mail from Pamela Hayes of the Sunshine Coast. Copy below.

I am very concerned about what appears to have happened to Jennifer Parkhurst, a lady who obviously cares about the plight of suffering animals.

It would appear that ‘DERM’ thugs are hired to stop people from feeding the animals.

How long can you go without a meal one has to ask ?

I further support the call of Pam Hayes letter that the men (? – very much doubt) who are feeding poisoned biscuits to the dingoes to deter them from taking food from tourists also be sacked.  Yes, these dragknuckles should be replaced by human beings with morals and ethics.

Although my organization is called ‘Serbian Animals Voice’, it is actually based in England, Uk.  I myself am an Englishman.  We have over six years direct campaigning and legal experience against the Serbian government relating to stray animals in the Balkans; strays which endure very similar practices and suffering that the dingoes appear to be enduring now at the hands of some men.  This is not the situation with all people; visitors wish to see and feed the animals and I trust you would support this rather than setting thugs against the animals baiting them with poisoned biscuits.

I trust that you may consider issuing a formal statement in the very near future declaring your intentions for the starving Fraser Island dingoes.  Once we have this, we will then consider the next stage of our campaign.

Pamela Hayes is correct in her letter content.  In addition, I have found the (bad) ear tagging issue relating to animals as shown in the Youtube video by Jennifer Parkhurst of very serious concern also.  I trust that you will also review this and take appropriate action.

What about setting up an emergency feeding program for the long suffering Fraser Island dingoes who are actually starving to death as I write? Many have been found dead with nothing but grass and sand in their stomachs. Yet they are guarded by hired ‘DERM’ thugs to stop people from feeding them.  This is outrageous.

Do we have to wait for another cyclone or other disaster before we see a need to stop this ongoing cruelty and suffering?

Those who are currently MIS-managing them thought it would be smart to feed them poison biscuits ‘to deter’ the dingoes from taking food from tourists. These men should be sacked and replaced with human beings with morals and ethics.

We all know what happened to Jennifer Parkhurst, a kind and compassionate woman who actually respects animals; fined $40,000 and given a suspended jail term for simply taking pity on them. The charge they came up with was “interfering with dingoes”. What sort of a country makes up such a charge in order to perpetuate suffering?  Probably one that only wants to save face.

An excerpt from the Australian Wildlife Protection Council’s newsletter; Christmas 2010. Volume 21 Number 3:
“15 months ago, Jennifer Parkhurst, a widely respected woman and insulin-dependent diabetic, was rudely awakened at 7am by Qld Dept of Environment and Resource Management squad pounding on her door. The next 6 hours were spent in a terrified state of shock, watching her personal possessions and professional equipment being confiscated and carried off by the DERM ‘goons’. She didn’t realise the vindictiveness and persistence of the louts employed by the Qld Gov’t to manage Fraser Island and the unfortunate, hapless dingoes. They confiscated most of her belongings, including her paintings, photographs, personal documents, even Gov’t documents legally obtained under FOI. The dingo family Jennifer photographed were later killed out of sheer bloody-mindedness, although the perpetrators said they were destroyed after ‘exhibiting increasingly aggressive behaviour’. [Bullies are actually cowards beneath all the posturing].

Something must be done for these poor animals, we cannot sit back and allow goons to have their way simply so they can throw their weight around and feel like the alpha males of the region.

The true measure of a man is revealed in his attitude toward animals.

If you have any power at all, to make life a little easier for these starving creatures, I beg you to use it as soon as you possibly can.

Murder at Hasdal

This is one of the most heartbreaking stories of Hasdal.

This german shepherd arrived with small injuries in his legs caused by thorns and grass of the kind you encounter in the fields/forest. They were very painful, the dog couldn’t stand on his own, but they were not life threatening.

Knowing that Ismail Ay, the veterinarian of Hasdal would NOT bother treating those injuries and that the infection would quickly spread through the body we requested to take the animal to a private clinic immediately. This request was refused. Ismail Ay wanted to deal with the case himself… he then proceeded to drop the dog in an isolation cage and told the volunteers to stay away.

Days later even Ismail Ay was horrified when he entered the cage. The most disgusting smell inmediately hit him on the face and spread throughout the shelter.

It’s was the smell of rotten flesh and death. The dog lay there in a pool of blood ozzing from his legs. He was howling in absolute pain. Massive infection had spread throughout the body.

Ismail Ay then finally gave an order: Take that disgusting dog away from here!

The dog was rushed to a private clinic where he died soon afterwards. There was nothing anyone could do. He died a horrifying death caused by the professional negligence of Ismail Ay, the veterinarian at Hasdal.

Call Kadir Topbas, the Mayor of Istanbul NOW. Let him know the entire world is looking at this same in their computer screens and DEMAND the immediate stop of all operations at the Hasdal shelter.

If you have nothing to hide, why was the media not immediately allowed to get a glimpse behind locked doors ?

Just don’t underestimate it, Mr. Kadir Topbaş !

We will continue our drive until the truth is uncovered and the responsible people are brought to Justice for torturing innocent and helpless animals.

Being the Mayor of Istanbul, it is your duty to help the animals and make their lives worth living. 

You must act now, there is no time to loose anymore.   Too many already suffered huge pain and died in vain.

It’s an early morning in Istanbul.

The Istanbul Municipality van drives through a lonely road in a village far away from Istanbul. In the back, shaken and terrified, 5 stray dogs violently hit the walls with each bump of the road. The barks and screams can be heard by every villager en route.

Upon arriving to an isolated location the Municipal drivers brutally unload the frightened animals onto the side of the road.

Two of the animals are in good condition but the other three barely have any strength to move. Mila is one of them. Too weak to move she lies on the grass, waiting to die.

We were there.

The entire event was caught on camera as part of an on-going investigation by Let’s Adopt! into the atrocities commited by Kadir Topbaş Hasdal shelter and the Municipality’s well documented practice of dumping dogs in the forests and deserted locations.

The events of that morning, together with undercover footage obtained by Let’s Adopt! proves, beyond any shade of doubt, the blatant disregard for the Law by Kadir Topbaş team and the constant and sustained lies of the Municipality to the Press and the general public.

It was barely weeks ago that the brutal killing of a cat made the entire turkish society get up in arms in rejection of animal cruelty.  The events and practices that have come to light show a different kind of cruelty, one no less brutal and affecting to a much larger number of animals, and cast serious doubts over the credibility and honesty of Kadir Topbas and his administration.

In recent months the European Union has granted the Istanbul Municipality large amounts of money in order to improve their sheltering practices, with a shelter currently being built in Istanbul with European Union funds.

European Union officials declare to be totally unaware and shocked by these practices. The scandal threatens to bring European Union funding to a halt.

Kadir Topbaş and the Istanbul Municipality deny any wrongdoing and claim the footage and the scandal to be fabrications. We let you be the judge of that.

The brotherhood and sisterhood of those who truly love animals and are steadfast in seeing conditions minimally suitable for them at the very least (if not exceeding this state) is an international one, and clearly, attention has been focused sharply on the blemish on the face of Istanbul that is Hasdal. Animals sleeping among others which are dead, injured, and / or very ill. Dogs with no alternative other than to wander among their own feces and vomit. These are the images that are emanating from the municipality over which you have been elected and given a degree of domain. It goes without saying that this does not reflect well at all on what is to be your legacy.

The video evidence clearly and unequivocally demonstrates flagrant violations of Animal Protection Law 5199 (June 24, 2004), In pertinent part: Part I, Chapter 1, Articles (a), (c), (d), (g), (h), and (j). I would respectfully suggest personal research into these matters.

Turkey prides itself on being a nation of animal lovers. It is truly my hope that the awareness currently being served upon you through various world locales prompts you to uphold the laws that are part and parcel to the government to which you were elected on the local level.
