This week is UK National Vegetarian Week.

Have a look at the following links and enjoy your trip around the sites, seeing how you can still really enjoy your food whilst ditching animal suffering at the same time. Win win !

And for those who still enjoy ‘manly meat’ – Enjoy your steak !!!
Dear Mark,
The American appetite for meat — which is 4 times the global average — is eating away at wild habitat, water and even our climate. Yet while other governments have taken specific steps to recommend diets lower in meat and dairy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to cater to the livestock industry, leaving sustainability out of important policy conversations like our national dietary guidelines.
Think about it: Americans eat 50 billion pounds of meat a year, yet our farms don’t even produce enough fruits and vegetables to meet the 2.5 cups a day recommended in the national dietary guidelines. Something is wrong with this picture.
It’s time for the USDA to create a plan to address the urgent need for Americans to reduce meat and dairy consumption and eat a healthy, sustainable diet. National guidelines on diets have enormous influence on how people eat, including in schools and government facilities.
Join us in urging the USDA to issue a public statement and plan of action to promote a sustainable American diet.

Kitten season has kicked into full gear and abandoned babies, frequently just born and with their umbilical cords still attached, are literally everywhere.
Irresponsible cat owners here feel that spaying/neutering is cruel, but I guess separating the youngsters from their nursing mothers and leaving them next to a trash can to fend for themselves when they aren’t even able to eat alone (or throwing them inside the waste container) isn’t cruel at all.

Of course, it’s impossible to know who the mother cats belong to, but it’s also highly improbable that a stray cat would pack her kittens into a carrying bag or a box and leave them in a dumpster. Year after year the same thing happens and year after year the overall situation is getting worse.
Although almost all animal rescuers are already getting hoarse from repeating that spay/neuter surgery is necessary for pets, far too many cats and dogs end up on the street and the animal shelters are overflowing with all of the new arrivals.
OK, rant over. These six babies were left in a cardboard box in front of the mall when they were maybe 10 days old. Two of them hadn’t even opened their eyes yet because their eyelids were glued shut with pus. They have been hand raised and bottle fed for a month now, as they were not progressing the way they should; moreover, all of them had a chlamydia infection and ringworm. Just great. Five of them finally pulled through and began to eat on their own, but the tiniest one, a little black girlie with a white tip to her tail, who had been the smallest and weakest from the very beginning, seemed to be dying a week ago. She had been given strong antibiotics for days and then the UV scan showed that her liver and stomach were enlarged, so more drugs (vitamins and hepatoprotectives) were added to her daily therapy.
She needed around the clock care, her chances were slim to none, but she didn’t want to die and she definitely wasn’t ready to give up. Bone skinny, feeble and frail, she valiantly fought for her life with every ounce of her fragile strength and she’s made it! Boy… that was close.
To our great joy, she doesn’t need to be fed with a syringe anymore, she eats on her own and even though she is at least two times smaller than any of her siblings, she is very serious about growing big. The little black girl already has a sponsor, our dear friend Kim, who named her Phoenix, as she defeated death by a hair’s breadth and sprang back to life.
If any of you would like to virtually adopt and name any of these cutie pies, we would be extremely grateful! And if you’re unable to sponsor one of them, please give us a hand with the costs of their upbringing which are already skyrocketing with some help from their vet bills.

Hello,
Vivienne Westwood, Jeremy Irons, Jon Snow, Dominic West and many others ask us all to #TurnYourNoseUp at factory pig farms and only buy high welfare pork.
spread the message and together we can close pig factories. It’s that simple.
Pigs live in conditions that are so intolerably cruel that they need routine doses of antibiotics just to keep them alive. The World Health Organization has said that antibiotic use in food animals allows resistant bacteria to spread to humans, thus hastening the end of antibiotics as a cure for human diseases. They warn that antibiotic resistance poses a “major global threat“ to public health.
Best,
Tracy Worcester/ Director

All French foie gras farms are currently empty due to a disease that has been infecting ducks kept for the production of this cruel ‘delicacy’.
But, from next week, the French Agriculture Minister will allow farmers to bring ducks back onto their farms and restart foie gras production.
Ducks reared for foie gras have to endure the horror of being force-fed up to four times a day for the final two weeks of their lives.
Foie gras production is so cruel that it has been banned in many countries, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway and Poland.
Will you send an e-card to the French Agriculture Minister to highlight your disgust at this cruel practice and demand that the foie gras farms stay closed forever?
The production of foie gras is staggeringly cruel. In addition to the appalling suffering inflicted by force-feeding, during this period the animals are trapped in tiny, barren cages.
The temporary closure of France’s foie gras farms is due to end on 16th May.
We have no time to lose.

Dear Mark,
Today we have launched a new major petition calling on politicians across the UK to ban the manufacture, sale and use of snares –

Snares are the landmines of the countryside. They are cruel and indiscriminate killers of wild animals and pets and we can’t understand why, in the 21st century, the UK remains one of just five countries in Europe that has not yet banned them.
Last month our investigators visited a shooting estate in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, and found a hare trapped in a snare. We have explained the hare’s tragic story in a new film exposing the horror of snares, and we would be so grateful if you could watch and share the film to help us raise vital awareness.
1.7 million animals will be snared in the UK this year. That is one every 20 seconds.
So, in the time it takes you to read this email… yet more animals will fall victim to snares. This has to stop!

Please share the petition with your friends and family.

Dear Mark,
The seal ‘hunt’ in Canada has taken the lives of over 64,244 harp seal pups.
This is the official figure from Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as of May 4th, and excludes seals who were wounded but got away, which officials refer to as “struck and lost.”
Sealers are supposed to kill seals only if they have buyers for their pelts (according to the government), and the two main processors, Carino and PhocaLux Int’l announced that they would purchase a combined total of about 60,000 pelts.
We are investigating whether all 60,000 pelts, plus those that have been stockpiled in past years, will be sold to fur coat manufacturers this year, or whether seals were killed this year in order to add their pelts to stockpiles. We will keep you updated on any information we are able to gather about this.
Please keep speaking out for the seals and please keep boycotting tourism to Canada, especially Atlantic Canada, and seafood from Canada.

Other ways to help include:
* Canadians can send special postcards to PM Trudeau without postage. Email us to order these free postcards.
* Distribute leaflets to everyone you know and leave some around town – in doctors’ offices, post offices, libraries, and anywhere people might pick it up and read it. Email us to order these free leaflets.
* Contact us or visit our volunteer page to see other ways you can help. We are looking for committed activists for outreach and officer positions, etc.

Thank you for caring and taking action.
For the seals,

All pictures from SAV Archives.
Dear friends,
For the Yulin dog meat festival, dogs are beaten or bled to death — or boiled alive, shaking in a world of pain. They’re hung upside down from hooks, a slit cut from their anus and skin ripped off their bodies, then sold to be eaten.
The suffering must be unbearable — new research shows that in terms of emotion, dogs’ brains are much like ours, something dog owners and lovers understand well. When we see dogs for what they are — living beings with thoughts and feelings —

When our numbers are great enough, Avaaz will take out ads, work with influential celebrities, run the first independent national poll on dog-eating in China, and put this issue on front pages everywhere until Chinese authorities act.
Add your name and tell everyone:

Thanks to brave Chinese activists, the festival gets smaller each year, and Yulin authorities eventually withdrew their sponsorship of the festival and even banned their employees from attending. Momentum is building.

If millions of us raise our voices now, we can save thousands of pups from unimaginable torture. The Yulin festival isn’t a centuries old tradition — it was started in 2010! And many argue that it was mainly to boost industry sales — not so much to sustain an old tradition. Time is running out.
Sign the petition then forward this to friends and family — let’s make this huge!
Thousands of Chinese citizens have protested the festival, but authorities won’t act until they see how badly it’s hurting China’s global image, which they’ve been working hard to improve. That’s where we come in.
Let’s show the Chinese government that the world is calling on them to stop this puppy slaughter immediately!

Our community has campaigned against the most cruel bull festival in Spain, against the discarding and killing of male baby chicks in Germany, and against terrible conditions on farms in Spain and France. Now it’s time to speak out for ‘man’s best friend’, and get this puppy slaughter stopped for good.
With hope, Rewan, Nick, Patricia, Jooyea, Aften, Alice and the entire Avaaz team
