Aquariums Deal Big Blow to Dolphin Slaughter in Taiji

Most Japanese facilities no longer will buy animals captured during the annual hunt at the cove.

May 20, 2015

David Kirby has been a professional journalist for 25 years. His third book, Death at Seaworld, was published in 2012.

In a stunning setback to the dolphin hunt in Taiji, the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums on Wednesday banned its members from acquiring animals captured during the annual slaughter.

Of the country’s 54 aquariums that house dolphins, 17 are non-JAZA members and are not bound by the decision. Aquariums from at least 20 foreign countries also acquire dolphins from Taiji. Meanwhile, it’s not clear if the JAZA ban extends to dolphins caught in places other than Taiji.

Still, the move is a big blow to the live-animal trade in Taiji. About 40 percent of all dolphins caught there are sent to aquariums in Japan, according to Sarah Lucas, chief executive of Australia for Dolphins. Nearly half of the dolphins in Japanese aquariums, meanwhile, may have been taken from Taiji.

“JAZA will prohibit its members to acquire wild dolphins caught by drive fishing in Taiji and to take part in their export and sale,” the group’s chairman, Kazutoshi Arai, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Scientists and activists applauded the move.

“This is a huge victory for the dolphins,” Ric O’Barry, director of Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project and star of the Oscar-winning documentary on Taiji, The Cove, said in an email. “And it’s another nail in the coffin for the annual dolphin slaughter. We must be vigilant however. We will monitor the captures very carefully this year as usual.”

Last month, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums suspended the Japanese group’s membership for failure “to adhere to policies that prohibit participating in cruel and non-selective methods of taking animals from the wild.”

The global organization was set to expel JAZA on Thursday if the Japanese didn’t take action.

“WAZA considers JAZA’s decision to be a welcome breakthrough and looks forward to receiving further details from JAZA in order to fully appreciate the implications of today’s decision,” the group said in a statement.

Diana Reiss, a marine mammal scientist and a psychology professor at Hunter College in New York, said she and other scientists and industry insiders had been working with JAZA and WAZA to bring about such a ban since 2004.

“It’s amazing and important news,” Reiss said. “What’s really terrific and critical about this decision is that it came from within Japan’s zoological community…which says that this needs to stop.”

JAZA’s decision, which was approved by a 142–43 vote of its members, came after years of negotiations with and pressure from WAZA.

The Taiji drives, where entire pods are forced into a small cove and then slaughtered, released, or captured and sold to aquariums for up to $150,000 apiece, has been the focus of enormous international opposition for years.

But Arai made it clear that JAZA was not rejecting drive hunts altogether.

“We do not think it is cruel to take wild dolphins…but as we have reached this kind of conclusion in relation to WAZA, we need to steer [our policy] toward breeding,” Arai said.

Ramping up Japan’s captive breeding efforts will be difficult. Many aquariums are too small to house breeding pools, and only about 13 percent of aquarium dolphins in Japan were bred in captivity, compared with about 70 percent in the United States, according to Arai.

Arai estimated it could take “five years or more” to establish adequate breeding skills in Japan. Failing that, “some aquariums could eventually face difficulty operating as they may not be able to find an alternative source of dolphins,” the Japanese newspaper Mainichi reported.

Possible loopholes in the new ban have some critics concerned.

“They say they will no longer capture dolphins in Taiji, but it’s not clear whether they’re going to capture dolphins in other places or not,” Reiss said. “This needs to be clarified with JAZA.” Moreover, non-JAZA aquariums presumably will continue buying dolphins from Taiji.

“JAZA’s decision…is a big step, and one that will hopefully contribute to an end to these hunts,” Courtney Vail, program and campaigns manager for Whale and Dolphin Conservation, said in an email. “We must still be concerned, however, with all wild captures. As long as zoo and aquaria keep the door open for acquisition from the wild, dolphins will suffer.”

USA: 4,000 Dead Wolves as Idaho Starts Aerial Killing !! – Disgusting !!

USA1

CBD header

cropped-oregon-wolf-new-year.jpg

Dear Mark,

The federal wolf-killing machine is cranking up again in Idaho.

The Center for Biological Diversity has learned that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services plans to send gunners in helicopters to shoot wolves in the Lolo Elk Management Zone of the Clearwater National Forest.

This is happening as the number of wolves gunned down, trapped and poisoned since 2011 surpasses 4,000 dead — more than half of them in the state of Idaho alone. We’re worried this month will be a repeat of last February, when 19 wolves were shot by aerial gunners in the Lolo.

The Center is committed to fighting wolf killing, but we need your help to win. Please contribute to the Center’s Predator Defense Fund, and we’ll put your support to work defending wolves.

Anti-wolf militants have made it clear that they won’t stop until nearly every wolf in Idaho is gone, and they have powerful friends ready to spend taxpayer money to help. The Idaho Legislature is right now budgeting another $400,000 to kill wolves in the 2016-17 fiscal year. Last year similar funding was used by the state to kill 72 wolves at an estimated cost of more than $7,000 per animal — and that’s on top of the 250-plus killed by private hunters during the 2014-2015 season. The wolf haters are willing to spend a publicly funded fortune to exterminate this intelligent, social species.

We need your help to stand up for wolves. The Center will use your gift to the Predator Defense Fund to defend wolves from the statehouse to the courthouse.

We know how to win for wolves. We have an unmatched quarter-century of experience. We’ve defeated wolf-killing proposals from the Great Lakes to the Pacific. We’ve even won in Idaho, the deadliest place in America for wolves — just last year we forced the state to abandon its plans to send a trained wolf killer into the Frank Church/River of No Return Wilderness. Our seasoned lawyers, scientists and activists are the best defense that wolf families have.

Help us ground Idaho’s helicopters and send Wildlife Services’ killers home. You can contribute to our work with a donation to the Predator Defense Fund.

4,000 dead wolves is 4,000 too many.

For the wolves,

‘The Cove’ Star Is Kicked out of Japan

Japanese authorities deport dolphin activist Ric O’Barry after detaining him for 19 days at Tokyo’s airport.

http://www.takepart.com/article/2016/02/05/19-days-jail-dolphin-activist-deported?cmpid=tpdaily-eml-2016-02-05-C

Taylor Hill is an associate editor at TakePart covering environment and wildlife.

Bio

Dolphin trainer turned animal-rights activist Ric O’Barry has spent the past 13 years working to expose Japan’s dolphin hunts, and now the country has sent him packing.

Japanese officials on Friday put the star of the 2009 Oscar-winning documentary The Cove on a plane at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport bound for the United States. Immigration officials barred O’Barry, 76, from entering the country on his arrival in Tokyo on Jan. 18 and held him in a detention facility for 19 days.

His son, Lincoln O’Barry, said the deportation is a desperate attempt by the Japanese government to hide the ongoing dolphin drive and slaughter in Taiji. Each year, thousands of dolphins are herded by fishing boats into a cove at Taiji, where they are killed for their meat or captured for sale to aquariums and marine parks.

“They’ve failed miserably, and all they’re really doing is bringing more attention to the issue,” Lincoln O’Barry said. He said the official reason his father was deported, according to Japanese immigration, was that he supposedly lied about his itinerary on a trip to the country this past summer and wasn’t in the country as a “tourist.”

RELATED:  Revealing the Cove Dolphins’ Toxic Secrets

“They know all about my father, so every time he comes into the country he gets interrogated for about one to five hours, about where he is going, how long, and why,” he said. “They don’t do that with any other Americans coming into the country.”

Takashi Takano, a lawyer for O’Barry’s conservation group the Dolphin Project, said in a statement: “Tourism is not just ‘sightseeing,’ but also includes such activities as visits to places of disasters or holocaust. Mr. O’Barry’s visits to the cove in Taiji and his reports on dolphin hunting should be considered a legitimate tourist activity. To those who believe Japan is an open and democratic country, it must be shocking to realize this kind of experience can happen here and now.”

Americans do not need a visa to enter Japan for visits of under 90 days, according to the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C.

Louie Psihoyos, director of The Cove and executive director of the Ocean Preservation Society, said O’Barry’s arrest would only strengthen the resolve of groups like his.

“He was deported because the Taiji dolphin slaughter is a huge international embarrassment to Japan, and Ric is the most vocal protester,” Psihoyos said. “He didn’t violate any Japanese laws, but he brings worldwide attention to one of the most brutal animal atrocities in the world.”

The deportation means O’Barry must stay out of the country for five years, which the Dolphin Project is protesting.

A petition on the group’s website has garnered more than 25,000 signatures asking the Japanese government to overturn the deportation. Lincoln O’Barry said the team has filed a legal objection, with a lawsuit to follow.

“This is the beginning of something, not the end,” Ric O’Barry said in a statement. “The deportation is the green light to sue the government, something we have never had before.”

Tokyo says no to dolphin hunts:

On January 29, several Japanese activists assembled outside the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Tokyo to protest the killing and capture of dolphins. The demonstration was intentionally timed to coincide with staff getting off work for the day.  (See photo above – SAV)

Despite plummeting temperatures, for about 90 minutes, people called for an end to the dolphin hunts. Some held up signs, calling for the release of Ric O’Barry.

Petition 2

https://dolphinproject.net/take-action/release-ric-obarry-from-custody-in-japan/

Dolphins urgently need protection from further devastation caused by the dolphin drive hunting in Taiji Japan, dolphin slaughter and captive trade. President, CEO and Councillors of Broome Shire, your country is a member of the United Nations; The UN condemns Taiji Japan’s dolphin hunts. Australia also supports local and international efforts to protect dolphins and whales. It is unacceptable to continue as sister city to Taiji. Suspend the relationship and help save dolphins from future hunting seasons. Send Taiji a strong message so the people understand how their cruel business of dolphin drive hunting, slaughter and live capture is unacceptable and must stop now.

While we acknowledge Broome’s historic and emotional ties with Taiji, these cannot hold precedence over such atrocities against these intelligent, bonded and social mammals, who are not only loved by millions of people around the world but extremely vital to healthy ocean biodiversity.

Taiji’s overall business and financial security is not contingent on the continuation of the dolphin slaughter; while approximately 50 hunters participate in the drive hunts, there are approximately 300 fishermen who catch only fish. It is 100% viable for the dolphin hunters to change their activity, attract visitors to see dolphins by tourist boat all year round.

During the hunts, entire dolphin pods (sometimes more than one pod at a time), are driven beyond their limits to exhaustion, and captured in Taiji Cove. Weather permitting, the hunters set out in the boats every day, from September through to March each year. They decimate whole pods, discarding young dolphins, babies at sea with no hope of survival. Doing so reduces the hunters’ quota count, allowing them to later count larger dolphins during captures.

The captured dolphins experience unimaginable horror and heartbreaking ends, witnessing one another’s fate as all are brutally slaughtered. Those poor dolphins selected for a short life-time in captivity, by dolphin trainers in the cove, witness all of this. Researchers are forbidden from recording the dolphins’ screams. Agonizing death can take more than ten minutes.

Dolphins are kept captive in small sea-pens in Taiji and immediately must learn to eat dead fish by hand or starve. Trained for months there they are later sold for large sums to marine parks, resorts and other places keeping dolphins captive around the world for display to paying public, US$150,000 – US $200,000 and more. These closely bonded, empathetic, social and incredibly intelligent dolphins are either some, kept for the captive industry, or most, brutally slaughtered in the most horrific way. This whole business is driven by the pursuit of money made from entertaining paying crowds who are largely unaware of the ongoing tragedy behind the dolphin shows.

Given what we know of the high intelligence of dolphins, this slaughter is comparable to murder and to keep them in captivity is utterly cruel. The Indian Government recently acknowledged dolphins as non-human persons; there it is now forbidden to keep them in captivity or interfere at all. In Taiji Japan’s Whale Museum, dolphins are kept in abhorrent conditions, including Angel a beautiful albino dolphin torn from her mother, captured in the hunts while her family was killed.

Dolphins need and deserve the right to protection from human harm and interference. It is unacceptable for Broome Australia to have a sister city relationship with Taiji Japan, as long as the dolphin drive hunts continue. Suspend your sister city relationship with Taiji. Send Taiji a strong message so the people understand how their cruel business of dolphin drive hunting, slaughter and live capture is unacceptable and must stop now.

EU: SAV Very Much Welcomes The Proposals Of The Current Netherlands Presidency Of The EU Regarding Animal Welfare. Journey Times Down To 8 Hours Max – Lets Hope So !!!

EU AW LOGO

For our non EU visitors – each member state of the EU holds the ‘Presidency’ of the EU for a period of 6 months. From Jan to June 2016 it is the turn of the Netherlands – Holland; a very positive nation when it comes to animal welfare.

This means that each member state currently has the Presidency once every 12-13 years, and so it has a lot of work to do to ‘push’ issues important to it at this time.

Below is a basic insight into the current situation, and the message from the Dutch which we very much welcome. SAV.

———————————–

The Netherlands presidency of the Council of the EU:

1 January-30 June 2016

The Netherlands presidency work programme focuses on four key areas: migration and international security, sound finances and a robust eurozone, Europe as an innovator and job creator and forward-looking climate and energy policy.

The presidency wants an EU that focuses on what matters to Europe’s citizens and businesses, an EU that creates growth and jobs through innovation and connects with civil society. The presidency will promote action at EU level only if it is more effective than policies at national level.

http://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/council-eu/presidency-council-eu/

The presidency of the Council of the EU

Council of the EU

What is the Council presidency and how does it work?

29/06/2015

What is the Council presidency and how does it work?

A rotating presidency

The presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months. During this 6-month period, the presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, helping to ensure the continuity of the EU’s work in the Council.

Member states holding the presidency work together closely in groups of three, called ‘trios’. This system was introduced by the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. The trio sets long-term goals and prepares a common agenda determining the topics and major issues that will be addressed by the Council over an 18 month period. On the basis of this programme, each of the three countries prepares its own more detailed 6-month programme.

The current trio is made up of the presidencies of the Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta.

Animal welfare is a basic need: Dutch Presidency pleads for EU action for animals

Eurogroup welcomes statements Dutch Chief Veterinary Officer at Animal Welfare Intergroup.

Today the Dutch Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Christianne Bruschke, unfolded the views of the Dutch Presidency on the future of the European animal welfare related dossiers, saying “animal welfare is not a hype but a basic need in our society as fundamental for a sustainable future”. She also stressed that high ambitions in the field of animal welfare should be reflected in EU regulations as individual EU countries are no isolated islands.

Dr Bruschke called on the European Commission to put forward a new Communication on an EU Strategy on the protection and welfare of animals for the period 2016-2020.  In line with the recently adopted resolution of the European Parliament a new Animal Welfare Strategy should ensure the continuation of delivering high animal welfare standards across the Member States. Moreover, the Dutch Presidency would welcome the Commission to examine the perspectives of an updated, comprehensive and clear legislative framework for animal welfare. Such a framework would provide the opportunity to update existing regulations in accordance with new scientific insights, technological innovation and socioeconomic trends whilst addressing shortcomings and omissions.

Furthermore, a new EU platform on animal welfare, of stakeholder organisations and authorities of member states, run by the European Commission, could create more momentum and focus on the animal welfare challenges of the EU. Such a platform could facilitate discussions and exchange of experiences and best practices on implementation, control and enforcement of animal welfare regulations. The proposal of the platform will be presented at the next Agricultural Council meeting on 15th February.

Moreover, the Dutch Government remains to be a strong supporter of a reduction of transport times of slaughter animals to 8 hours as well as for the improvement of transport of conditions like space allowances. Although not expected during the Dutch Presidency, the European Commission should look into a revision of the current Transport Regulation and the reduction of transport times. In 2015 Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands filed a formal request for a revision of the Transport Regulation to the Commission. All three governments remain to urge the Commission for a revision.

Another point of attention for the Dutch Presidency is phasing out non-therapeutic mutilations in farming as reducing this practice will improve animal welfare and contribute to a more sustainable animal husbandry. One of the routinely applied mutilations is painful piglet castration. The Netherlands is fully committed to ending surgical castration by 2018, the deadline stipulated in the European Declaration to on Alternatives to the Surgical Castration of Pigs (Brussels declaration). Together with Germany and Denmark, The Netherlands have urged all involved stakeholders to sign the Brussels declaration and to act accordingly.

At the end of the parliamentary session MEP Eck took to the microphone and declared in front of the present breeders that as Vice President of EUROGROUP FOR ANIMALS he will do anything to increase the economic crisis of the rabbit breeders and work for a total ban of rabbit breeding. This Business is one of the worst cruelties against animals.
