International: Stop Live Exports Day of Action – 14/6/18. See Below For More Details.

Dear Mark,

Stop Live Transport: International Awareness Day is just a month away, and the victims of this horrible trade need your voice.

End Europe’s live export shame

The European Commission is currently complicit in an appalling trade in live farm animals to Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. Please tell the Commissioners to take action.

Petition link – https://action.ciwf.org.uk/page/24362/petition/1?utm_campaign=transport&utm_source=actionemail&utm_medium=email&ea.url.id=1366384&forwarded=true

Animals exported from Europe may face extreme dehydration, exhaustion and hunger. Some collapse onto floors that are covered in faeces and urine, and risk being trampled by their companions. Those that survive may then face unimaginably horrific slaughter.

It is within the power of the European Commission – and the Commission alone – to propose legislation to end this suffering. Please call for an end to EU live exports today.

Take a stand on 14th June!

Thanks to a recent investigation by Animals Australia, the cruelty of live transport is making global headlines. Video footage of sheep in the belly of a transport ship, covered in blankets of faeces, or being cooked alive by sweltering temperatures, has shocked the world.

If you haven’t already done so, please click here to find out more.

You can join campaigners worldwide who will be raising their voices, in unison, to oppose this cruel trade.

If you’re based near London, UK, please join our rally in Parliament Square from 12:30-2.00pm. You can register your interest in the rally on Facebook.

Alternatively, check out our interactive map to find an event closer to home!

A huge thank you to everyone who’s already said ‘I’m in’ to Stop Live Transport: International Awareness Day, 14th June. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response so far – with events planned in over 30 countries!

No event near you? Why not organise your own! A candlelight vigil, a peaceful street rally or even an online demonstration – anything you can do will raise awareness of the cruelty of long distance transport.

Netherlands: Jaap; The Vegetarian Butcher.

Jaap Korteweg is a 9th generation farmer and founding father of The Vegetarian Butcher. How does someone, having grown up on a farm among the cows in the Dutch countryside, decide to become a Vegetarian Butcher?

When the swine fever and the mad cow disease were holding the Netherlands in their grip, Jaap was asked whether his cold storages could be used as storage for tens of thousands of cadavers.

Having witnessed this disaster, Jaap considered investing in keeping cattle, in an organic and animal friendly way. This idea was great; until the day the cattle would have to be taken to the slaughterhouse. From that moment on he decided to become a vegetarian. But he missed the taste of meat so much, that he promised himself he would only eat meat when he went out for a meal.

It was clear to him that he had to find something that could satisfy his craving for meat, without actually having to eat animals.

After a ten-year search, Jaap developed and found innovative meat substitutes with a spectacular bite and texture. With the help of top chefs, he added the flavour and experience of true meat to the products. In addition, he saw a lot of potential in the protein rich and organic lupine from Dutch soil.

Together with concept designer Niko Koffeman, chef Paul Bom and a devoted team, he is working on a big transition from animal to vegetable meat. Their ideal is to have meat enthusiasts experience the meat free products and to realise they don’t have to miss out on anything if they leave meat out of their diet for a couple of days a week. Jaap and his team’s ambition is to become the biggest butcher in the world, in a short time.

UK: Have Your Say About Banning Live Animal Exports Post Brexit. Only One (1) Week Remaining – Act Now.

SAV Comment – Everything here in the UK is looking good for a ban on live animal exports once the UK leaves the EU.  Groups and citizens are lobbying real hard for the ban to be imposed.

We are not currently allowed to ben under EU rules but when we take back our own control as voted for by the people of the UK, it will be a policy which can be implemented by a UK government.   ALL EU regulations (1/2005) on the welfare of animals during transport is basically a joke; and always has been.   The EU does not enforce its own legislation.  As with many animal welfare issues, such as migratory bird shooting covered by Venus in a recent post, the EU is utterly useless.  They want to talk big and pretend to have all the regulations and legislation in place, but the reality is, it means nothing.

Here is your chance to have a final say on an issue that has been open to the public for a while.  Please note that thee is now only ONE WEEK LEFT in which to submit any response.  The fight will not stop until the UK leads the way and bans live animal exports !

Mark,

(UK government) Environment Secretary Michael Gove is seeking your view on the transport of live animals, right now. Will you join over 40,000 SumOfUs members and call on him to end the transport of live farm animals for slaughter?

Michael Gove: stop the horrors of live animal transports now!

We know that Michael Gove is considering a ban on the live export of animals after Brexit to help the UK become a world leader in animal welfare.

But we need to show him that the public is behind a ban to make sure he takes action.

And we only have one week to do it!

Michael Gove: stop the cruel transportation of living farm animals.

Thanks for all that you do,

Dear Mark

Please join Stop Live Exports, Animals Australia, RSPCA and Animal Justice Party at Fremantle Port tomorrow.

The victims of live export need you this Sunday! Yes, yes – we know it’s Mother’s Day, but spare a thought for all the mother ewes and their new-born lambs aboard those shipments we saw in Fazal’s harrowing footage on 60 Minutes.

Notorious live export ship, the Al Shuwaikh, (see photo below) loaded 60,000 animals in Adelaide and now it’s on its way to Fremantle to load more, bound for the Middle East where it’s approaching summer… the most dangerous time of year for Aussie sheep.

Al Shuwaikh RS web
This ship is operated by Emanuel Exports — the company at the heart of the recent explosive 60 Minutes story that revealed the routine, extreme suffering of animals at sea.

As the Al Shuwaikh is on its way to load in Freo, while the government will be deciding the fate of millions of sheep – the findings of the McCarthy review of live sheep exports is about to be released next week,  Sussan Ley, Liberal MP is adamant she will be push ahead with her Private Member’s Bill this month, to end the live sheep trade and the Greens’ Senator, Lee Rhiannon and Senator Derryn Hinch will table a Bill in the Senate to end the trade.

Help us convince the federal government of the right action to take – this protest is our LAST CHANCE to send the strongest possible message that live export cruelty must end.

Animals Australia will be there.
Animal Justice Party will be there.

Josh Wilson will be there.
We will be there, and we hope YOU will be there too!
(Greens may be there depending on availability).

Please, help us make this event MASSIVE!

WHEN: 2PM Sunday 13 May

WHERE:

The pier next to the Maritime Museum. This is about a 700 metre walk from Fremantle train station, and there is plenty of parking.

Location web

WHAT: We will have hundreds of signs there for you, but if you have the capacity to do so, you can DOWNLOAD AND PRINT SIGNS HERE.

Wear your Stop Live Exports, Animals Australia or Animal Justice Party t shirt if you have one.

WHY: To remind the government that putting tens of thousands of sheep on 40 year-old ships and sending them to the Middle East is always going to have disastrous outcomes and this trade needs to end NOW.

Please RSVP via FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE if you’re on Facebook.

Sheep on live export ship

This is not a dream.

15 years. Mark, that’s how long I’ve dreamed of seeing a headline like this. Since I first set foot in a Middle Eastern slaughterhouse and documented the brutal fate of sheep exported live from Australia. 15 years of investigations. Of relentless campaigning. The millions of animals we fought for and lost in that time. And the millions of people who united on their behalf — and refused to give in. I can’t tell you what it means to finally wake up to this headline:
Live export ban faces prospect of passing Parliament

It’s been 5 weeks since the world glimpsed the real life horror of a live sheep export ship. The outcry has only been getting louder. Now, for the first time, an end to this cruel trade is in sight…

For decades, gentle sheep like him have been crushed, starved, and literally cooked alive on live export ships… Historic Bills are coming before parliament that, if passed, could finally bring an end to this nightmare. Historic, because there is cross-party support from key Liberal MPs as well as Labor, the Greens, Derryn Hinch and Andrew Wilkie.

I’ve been walking the halls of Parliament and I am seeing traditional political foes, emboldened by people like you, set aside their differences to work together to help animals. This is our political system at its finest.

Mark, the next weeks and months will test all of us. We must stay loud, and stay strong like never before. Because until these Bills are debated, voted on, and (I pray) passed, live exporters will be fighting tooth and nail to kill any chance of this legislation becoming law.
They too are walking the halls of Parliament. I see them knocking on the doors of every politician who will give them time. They currently have the Prime Minister, lobbyists and big money on their side. We have the truth.

He needs us

As I write this, our campaign team is gearing up to run the biggest rally the port of Fremantle has ever seen. We’re broadcasting powerful TV ads Australia-wide. We’ve launched strategic public awareness campaigns in importing countries. Every day we’re fuelling media stories and working behind the scenes with advocates and influencers around the world…

But all this would be meaningless if it weren’t also for you. Mark, it’s your name on our petitions, behind e-mails and phone calls to politicians — that has gained animals the political attention they have today. And I know you’ll be with us to see this through.

It is this level of effort, determination and commitment to give a voice to those who cannot represent themselves, that leads to where we are now — on the precipice of historic change.

Remembering Bob Hunter – “I’m not going anywhere”.

Watson and Hunter block the Arctic Endeavour.

I think this is one of the greatest photos ever (Mark).

Paul Watson and the late Bob Hunter block the movement of the ‘Arctic Endeavour’ – thus attempting to save the murder of whitecoat seal pups.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hunter_(journalist)

In March of 1976, he and Paul Watson (now Sea Shepherd) stood on the heaving ice floes off the coast of Labrador as a large sealing ship bore down on them.

As the vessel bore down on them and the ice cracked and split beneath their feet, I (Paul) said to Bob,

when it splits, I’ll jump to the left and you to the right.”

Bob looked straight ahead and calmly said, “I’m not going anywhere.”

And he meant it.

England: 5 People To Be Charged With Hunt Fox Cub Suffering.

https://www.league.org.uk/news/alleged-fox-cub-killing

Posted

The League Against Cruel Sports has reacted to the announcement by West Mercia Police that five people are to be charged with animal cruelty offences after footage appeared to show live fox cubs being taken into a kennel of hunting hounds in Herefordshire.

It follows the animal welfare charity releasing footage in June 2016 of two fox cubs being taken into the kennels separately before two dead bodies are then filmed being dumped into a wheelie bin.

The scenes were filmed by the Hunt Investigation Team, supported by the League Against Cruel Sports, which is campaigning to strengthen the Hunting Act.

Martin Sims, Director of Investigations at the League Against Cruel Sports, said:

“We welcome the announcement by police that five people will face multiple charges of animal cruelty.

“It’s taken two years to get to this point but we hope justice will now be done – in a modern compassionate society, animals should be protected from cruelty and suffering.

“The fear is that if the charges are proven, it provides evidence of fox hunts training hounds to kill and that fox hunting is still widespread across the British countryside.

“The most recent polling indicates that 85 per cent of the British public oppose fox hunting so I hope they back our calls to strengthen the Hunting Act.”

Petition

The League is encouraging members of the public to sign their petition titled ‘stop the killing of animals by hunts in the UK’. Full details can be found here.
