England / Serbia – Two Great Videos To Watch and Enjoy – Joanne Can Now Hear the Music From Mike – BIG Result !!

EnglandSerbian FlagNot a thing that we usually cover, but you have to see – it is such a tear-jerker that we have been watching it time and time again here in UK.
An English girl (Joanne) aged 40, who has been deaf for her entire life, was fitted with implants into her ears in Birmingham England and this video captures the moment they are switched on and she can hear for the first time in her life.
Has been covered on UK tv news all day – you have to see it

Joanne said one of the first things she did was to get down to the sea and hear the waves crashing up onto the beach. Then she went home and flushed the toilet, again and again; just to hear it for the first time; what she had never heard before.

UK: Update 26/3/14 – A Good Day For Animals; A Bad One For Hunters !

See our recent post which declared that the current UK government was considering, much against the wishes of the vast majority of the British public, a return to hunting with dogs.

Well today, 26th March 2014, Joe has sent us some great news. You can read it here:

Dear Mark,

I’m writing to you with some fantastic news.

Thanks to all our collective efforts, we have seen off the planned back door attack on the Hunting Act. This news unfolded today during Prime Ministers Questions, when David Cameron was forced to admit that a proposal was indeed being considered, but that he regretted that it wouldn’t get support from both sides of the Coalition. This means an amendment has no chance of proceeding as things stand.

We have won the battle, but know full well that the war is not yet won. We need David Cameron to state categorically that he either:
accepts the Hunting Act is an important and successful piece of legislation, and removes the promise of full repeal,

OR
• that he will try to dismantle it in an open and transparent way by holding a repeal vote.
We know, as does he, that he will not win this – and that the majority of the British public, and MPs, would not support a return to cruelty.

Rest assured, after 90 years of campaigning to both bring about and enforce a ban on hunting with hounds for sport, we remain ever vigilant in defence of the Act. For now though the foxes, hares, deer and more that the legislation protects remain safe from the full horrors of traditional hunting.

Our campaigns of course focus on more than just hunting, as unfortunately there are many ways people chose to abuse animals for entertainment. And the badger cull issue is about to hit the headlines again, so please do ensure you look out for our emails, and do all you can to support our campaigns.

Thank you once again for all you do for animals. Together we have made a real difference.

With very best wishes

Joe Duckworth

P.S. The full exchange at (Prime Ministers Questions) PMQs was as follows:

League Vice-President, Angela Smith MP, asked:

“Westminster is awash with the rumour that the Government is considering an amendment to the Hunting Act. So will the Prime Minister take this opportunity to quash that rumour by confirming his commitment to the coalition agreement which only allows for a free vote on the legislation… on the repeal of the legislation.”

The Prime Minister replied:

“Proposals where made on a cross party basis to the Environment Secretary about an amendment to the Hunting Act that would help, in particular, upland farmers deal with the problem of fox predation of their lambs. That letter has been received and is being considered… but I regret to say I don’t think there will be Government agreement to go forward.”

And so, we are very confident that the hunting with dogs ban in the UK will now continue.
This is a victory for the League and all the campaigners who have worked so hard over the years to get a hunting ban – and now it seems that despite attempts by David Cameron Prime Minister, the hunting ban is to continue.

Keep UK hunting where it belongs – in the history books !

Keep Cruelty History !!

Last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) formally proposed to remove federal Endangered Species Act protection for nearly all gray wolves throughout the United States. But after an independent peer review board unanimously decided that the best available science doesn’t support the plan to delist, wolves have been given a second chance at maintaining federal protection.

Now that it’s been confirmed that this proposed delisting is clearly not based on the best available science, we are left wondering why FWS wants to turn its back on wolves.

Demand that this proposal be stopped in its tracks!

USA: Let Monarchs Fly !

MonarchsFly-email-Banner-3-18-14

Monarch butterflies are in crisis, and we must take immediate action to protect them!

Less than 20 years ago, an astounding 1 billion monarchs migrated to Mexico for the winter.

This year, a mere fraction of that — just 33.5 million — made the journey.

Why? In large part it’s because industrial agriculture is killing off the native milkweed on which monarchs depend with a new generation of potent herbicides.

Tell the EPA to adopt tough new restrictions on the weed killers that are wiping out monarchs!

By placing commonsense limits on Big Ag’s rampant use of herbicides like glyphosate — marketed as Roundup by Monsanto — the EPA could dramatically increase the monarch’s chance for survival.

But the EPA is unlikely to do that unless it hears from hundreds of thousands of us!

Monarchs can’t live without milkweed — it is the only plant on which they lay their eggs.

What’s at stake here? One of the most astounding and extraordinary migrations on the planet — a true natural wonder.

Each year, as they have for countless generations, North American monarchs undertake an epic journey, flittering upwards of 3,000 miles across the U.S. and Canada to just a relative few wintering grounds, including Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains.

But as industrial agriculture has ramped up its use of genetically engineered crops resistant to weed killers like glyphosate, it has also dramatically escalated its use of herbicides — and monarch populations have plunged.

This is the ninth year in a row that the population of monarchs wintering in Mexico has fallen below its long-term average, and this year it hit an all-time low.

Please tell EPA the time to act is now!

Thank you for joining NRDC at this critical moment in our fight to save the monarchs.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke

As many of you are aware, we have been fighting the issue of badger culling on our own ‘patch’ of England for many months now.  Right from the start the animal welfare lobby declared that the culls would be a complete waste of both time and public money.  Mass demonstrations have taken place right across the country in support of the badger; and in opposition to the culls proposed by the government as a lead up to what could be much larger and widespread culls.

Well this week the politicians gave a resounding ‘NO’ to the killing of any more badgers.  As you can read in the media links provided, there have been many reasons cited as to why the culls were an outstanding failure.

Despite the will of experts investigating the issue, the vast will of the majority of the British public to leave the badgers alone, the government could still ignore the will of the elected majority and carry on regardless.

Possibly it is an attempt by the Conservative government here in the UK to try and show the farming lobby and potential pro-Conservative voters, that they are trying to do something.  The UK has a General Election to elect the next government in May 2015.  If this is the case, votes rather than thought out animal welfare, then the government have made a very serious mistake as the culls which have taken place to date have basically been meaningless and showed nothing in the way of positive results for the pro-kill badger lobby.

The following is a report on the current political situation, and following you can read several press articles (via links) on the vote in Parliament this last week.  Finally, we have provided a copy of many of our past links on this issue, in order that you can see the hard work which has been undertaken to try and stop the unnecessary killing of the badger.

Badger cull in numbers:

50% or fewer badgers were killed than target figure

·         6.4% – 18% badgers took longer than five minutes to die

·         1,771 number of badgers culled*

·        £7.29m estimated cost of badger cull, according to animal welfare charity*

Thursday 13th March

Yesterday, MPs across all political parties gave the badger cull roll out a resounding ‘NO’ in parliament with a number of brave MPs defying the government and taking a stand against culling.

This victory could help save an estimated 100,000 badgers!

However, we mustn’t be complacent as the government could still ignore the will of the elected majority and carry on regardless.

Join us in calling for an urgent independent review of the bovine TB strategy ahead of any decision to allow more culling and a debate and binding vote during government time!

Last year’s pilot culls failed to kill enough badgers in both pilot areas to meet the government’s own targets. This, even after being extended beyond the original six weeks – a move which scientific conclusions published by Defra said could make the spread of TB worse.

There are also reports that The Independent Expert Panel (IEP) have found that the pilots failed the humaneness criteria with more than five percent of badgers taking longer than five minutes to die!

If culling is extended to more areas then imagine just how many more badgers could die in such pain… act now!

Join us now, as we vow to fight on against plans to slaughter an estimated 100,000 badgers across England!

Thank you for your support,

Breaking News: I am writing to update you on the developing threat to the hunting ban. We have been informed that a motion to amend the Hunting Act, effectively legalising hunting, could be laid before Parliament within just a few days, most likely being debated on Wednesday 26th March. The threat is real and we have to act now

East Kent MurderSAVE0131

The Government have indicated that they are considering amending the Hunting Act by using an Affirmative Statutory Instrument (SI), a type of legislation that can be used to push unpopular changes through Parliament with less scrutiny than a full vote on repeal would require.

This SI would lift the limit on the number of dogs used to flush out wild mammals and in doing so, with a full pack of up to 40 hounds being used, would make the Act impossible to police and undermine the legislation to such an extent it would be made toothless.

We believe the vote could take place on Wednesday 26th March so we need you to contact your MP immediately and urge them to vote against this devious attempt to bring back cruelty.

Once you’ve taken action please also share with your friends and family.

Thank you for your support.
