Here below is the August message from Danica at shelter Felix.

Everything is looking so good now, and the work on the shelter has been endless and expensive.  As Danica says, many of the cats are also sick with a virus and so veterinarian costs are also having to be found.

If you can give anything in the way of a donation it will be very much appreciated.

Between Hope and Fear

The time has come and we’re now finally about to face our biggest challenge yet – the roof replacement! Thanks to a couple of generous donations, we have enough money to start the most important phase of the shelter repairs, although it’s still uncertain how we’ll finish it. Everything else aside, if we manage to replace the roof of the auxiliary rooms before the cold weather sets in, it would be the jewel of our efforts and your success as well!

DA4

DA10

DA8

DA3

DA24

Since the beginning of year, we’ve fixed three of the cats’ rooms, thanks to a grant for shelter repairs we received last winter. The weather wasn’t really on our side during the spring, so the indoor work was all that could be done. Considering that shelter repairs have been ongoing for more than a year now and that we’ve faced a myriad of unexpected problems so far, the possibility of reaching the final goal sounds both thrilling and scary. If we fail, everything will seem pointless. But if we succeed?

The biggest problem is that there are 117 kitties here that need to be taken care of while repairing the roof. Running a cat shelter has never been an easy task, but frankly, it’s now becoming harder than ever. Many cats are sick with viruses and needing daily treatment; all of the shelter tenants have to be vaccinated against rabies as soon as they’re able to withstand the vaccination; providing all of the cats with adequate food according to their age and health, plus necessary vet care costs a fortune!  We’re regularly not facing just one problem but several of them simultaneously, including major shelter repairs on top of everything else. Nothing of this would’ve been possible without your help and the plain and simple truth is that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something…

FELIX

DA9

DA12

DA8

While raising funds for the roof replacement, we couldn’t just sit idle, as there were plenty of minor issues that needed to be addressed. Fixing the hydrophore tank, placing new water pipes through the backyard and building new faucets are finally finished and an adequate water supply outside is ensured. Judging by the cats’ behaviour, a new water faucet in the backyard was indispensable and one might wonder how did they ever live without it. Most of the kitties spend their time sitting on it, guarding it, climbing on it, drinking from it, it seems they consider it to be the best toy ever.

DA20DA18

DA17

DA19

DA7

The roof replacement will be costly, but before we even begin, a new concrete path between the front entrance into the backyard and garage has to be made and new columns need to be put in place in order to support the roof. The old path quickly turns into a muddy mess when it rains, so the cats that come out of the cat rooms step directly into the mud. Most importantly, the existing supporting structure is simply not able to bear the weight of the new roof as it’s as old as the hills and wasn’t even constructed properly in the first place. The roof overhang also needs to be extended in order to increase the base of support for the new roof and to protect the new path (and thus the entrances to the cats’ rooms) below from the rain run-off. The larger the area the base of support covers, the more stable our new roof will be. Only then we can start replacing the roof that was made 50 years ago and has not been touched since.

I know that there are far too many animal shelters and sanctuaries in need of help and zillions of homeless animals everywhere but would you please consider donating towards the roof repairs at Felix shelter? Once that our biggest problem is solved and the new roof is in place, we can rest easier and all of our efforts and sacrifices will finally make sense. The greatest gift is a secure future, a safe and happy life and it’s in your hands!

DA22

DA23

All of you know that Cat Shelter Felix is not just a shelter, it’s also the only cat sanctuary in Serbia, a unique cat haven with plenty of open spaces where all of the rescued cats are provided with a lifetime of care in a cage-free environment. As none of the cats are, nor will be, put up for adoption, this is the only home they will ever have.

Please, help the Felix kitties face the coming winter without worrying that the roof will collapse in on them! It all comes down to love and it all depends on you!

Live Exports Monthly Demonstration – August Report

On Saturday 3rd August, about 200+ people attended a rally against live animal exports outside of Dover Eastern Dock.

The atmosphere was electric and we had great pleasure in being there amongst all you like minded compassionate people working for a ban on exports.

The second in command (deputy CEO) from the RSPCA, along with the chief inspector for the South East (of England) and various other RSPCA workers all attended.

It was great to see support from county Green party supporters, including Mr Ian Driver who has been so prominent in the Ramsgate harbour campaign, which has now forced the trade to return back to Dover.

The rally was completely peaceful (as was the aim) campaigners and received lots of support from the passing public on this Saturday, which was also the busiest day of the year for people going on holiday through Dover harbour to Europe.

Our aim of the demonstration was to raise awareness amongst the general public using the harbour that live animals are still being exported from Dover – as there are millions of people out there that don’t even know it (live export) is still going on; the way the coalition government would like it to remain; with people being hidden from the truth.

After the deputy chief executive of the RSPCA had spoken and re-committed the charity to the campaign, Claire Hawkins, the Labour candidate for the Dover area at the next general Election, gave a rousing speech on why the trade should be stopped, followed by Ian and Reg (both of KAALE) who also seemed well on form.

Various councillors from Dover District Council were also in attendance and the council are holding an investigation into the trade in September with a view to calling for a ban from them. KAALE hope to give evidence against the trade at this, and as you know, we have a lot of that.

The RSPCA and Compassion In World Farming (CIWF) are also to be asked to put forward their findings, and we feel confident that a motion to get behind the campaign which is being put forward by the Labour wing of the council will go through.

Major Live Export Demo – LONDON – Sat 10th August – Covent Garden Start

CIWF are holding a march in London on Saturday 10th August 2013 to carry the message into the capital. It starts at Covent Garden at 1130am and the aim is to walk to Trafalgar Square.

Go to the CIWF web site at http://www.ciwf.org.uk/  to find out more.  Here you can also send a message to David heath MP asking that he stops hiding behind EU law and changes the UK law associated with the 1847 Act.

Yes, current EU law prevents the UK government from banning live exports altogether. BUT if local authorities were given more power over the trade they allow through their ports (as with an update to the UK 1847 Act), then this could still end live exports – and it would be perfectly legal under EU law.

Live exports: Tell David Heath to stop hiding behind EU law

A UK law that is over 160 years old, the Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act 1847, means that public ports across Britain have no say in whether they wish to accept the trade in live animal exports.

We know that many Port Authorities would rather not allow shipments of live animals. But as long as this outdated legislation remains on the books, their hands are tied.

The UK Farming Minister, David Heath MP (a Liberal Democrat MP and part of the Lib Dem / Conservative coalition government), needs to stand up and take a lead on this issue by amending the 1847 Act which forms part of UK Law.

He has the power to make a significant change for farm animal welfare.

But David Heath and his colleagues at Defra, the Government Department that oversees live exports, don’t seem to understand what we are calling for.

They believe that amending the 1847 Act would be a ban on live exports – and illegal under EU law.  As always, the Conservatives want to blame the EU for everything whilst continually failing to take action under UK law which they are able to do.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir/Madam,

My family and I would like to protest about the sailings from Dover port of the Live Export ship ‘Joline’, and the refusal of the port (DHB) to allow the RSPCA to monitor the animals before they are loaded onto the ship ‘Joline’ for export to Europe. We understand that government reps ‘Animal Health’ (AHVLA) are present at each sailing, but we do not trust them to do an decent job.  This was proven at Ramsgate port in the recent past.

We believe this is an unnecessary and cruel trade that brings shame on Dover port and the town of Dover. That the trade is legal we do not dispute, but believe that the exporters should be discouraged from shipping these animals live and concentration instead should be given to a carcass only trade.  Exports ‘on the hook’ rather than ‘on the hoof’.

From recent incidents at Ramsgate port it is obvious live animals cannot be transported on long journeys without fear, stress and even pain being caused to them; and even though they are going to slaughter.  We, as allegedly humane and compassionate beings should be looking for ways to minimise these conditions and the suffering imposed on defenceless animals which are sent live for export.

We believe that a carcass only trade would not only save animals but would also create more British jobs in a time when we are fighting for our economic stability.

The ‘processing’ of animals could be undertaken here in the UK rather than exported with the animals into Europe.

Mr Cameron the Prime Minister (Conservative); promised an open government that will listen to the opinions of the general public, and we know many people feel as we do.

Dover Harbour Board prides itself with a prestigious port that is the gateway to the UK. How does this trade in the export of live animals, which no other port in the UK wants, help maintain this image?

Your comments would be appreciated!

Yours Faithfully

This is the sample letter that can be sent to the main Dover using ferry companies, asking them to put pressure on the DHB:

IMPORTANT – Note that these ferry companies have ALREADY STOPPED carrying live animals on their ships to Europe for slaughter; they are simply very major users of the port and its facilities.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir/Madam,

As you are probably very aware Dover Harbour Board (DHB) are now accommodating the Live Export ship ‘Joline’ for transporting live animals for slaughter to the mainland continent of Europe.

This is a very contentious trade which most of the British public find repugnant.

My family and I understand that you, as one of the principal regular users / customers of the port of Dover, do not ship these animals on your vessels and we thank you for this.

However, we are asking you, as one of the main users of the (Dover) port to use your voice and influence in asking the Harbour Board to do everything in its power to discourage the live animal exporters from using Dover.

That this live animal trade brings disrepute to Dover port is without question, but we believe this will also impact on your company services as people will instead choose the Channel tunnel to avoid the possibility of seeing these unfortunate creatures being transported in this manner from Dover on the ‘Joline’.

After recent incidents at Ramsgate harbour that proved without doubt that live transportation causes animal fear, stress and sometimes pain, the exporters have turned their gaze once again back to Dover in a bid to avoid the scrutiny of the general public and the RSPCA who found very many infringements in this so called ‘legal trade’ operating from Ramsgate.

We beg you to help with your undoubted influence in the port of Dover and complain to the port authorities (DHB) about your businesses being brought into a bad light because of this little live animal transporting ‘barge’ that should be without doubt judged unsuitable to cross the busiest shipping lane in the world; the English Channel.

We believe that a carcass only trade would not only save animals but would also create more British jobs in a time when we are fighting for our economic stability.

The ‘processing’ of animals could be undertaken here in the UK rather than exported with the animals into Europe.

Export animals ‘on the hook’, not ‘on the hoof’ !

Thank you;

Yours Faithfully,

Australia: New Appointment of Independent Inspector General for Animal Welfare and Live Animal Exports.

australia

live export

Today is an important day for animal welfare in Australia.

Hundreds of thousands of people have called for more accountable and transparent animal welfare standards, and today we’ve won.

Thanks to your voice the Rudd Government is today announcing an Independent Inspector-General of Animal Welfare and Live Animal Exports.

This is a big step forward in protecting animal rights, and animal welfare groups including the RSPCA and WSPA have welcomed the announcement.

This new Inspector General will:

  • Provide assurance and oversight – similar to an audit function – of the role of Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as the regulator of live animal exports.
  • Ensure that the regulator is working within the regulatory framework.
  • Review the regulator’s compliance and investigations function.

Last time I wrote I promised you I’d keep fighting to ensure that Australian animals are treated more humanely.

I know that there’s still more to be done, but I hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate what you’ve been able to do – your voice has made a real difference.

Dear Sir,

Masked street monkeys in Jakarta, Indonesia are forced to wear bizarre costumes and give street performances as their owners collect money from spectators.
The emaciated long-tailed macaque monkeys are made to wear doll masks, wigs, and clothes and perform human tasks such as riding bikes, rocking horses and scooters.

Many are brutally trained to walk upright by being hung upside down, or having their hands tied behind their backs. In the first two weeks of being trained to perform cruel circus activities, countless monkeys suffer incredibly and die.

Animal activists in Jakarta have said the practice is cruel, and illegal.
I ask the Indonesian government to stop this cruel exploitation.

 FRAN0001

A COMPANY linked to Britain’s most popular pet foods sponsored a barbaric fight between fierce dogs and a tethered bear in the Ukraine.

By: James Murray

Published: Sun, July 28, 2013

French-based pet food makers Royal Canin, which sponsors hundreds of dog shows in Britain each year, even gave two cups to the owners of dogs involved in horrific fights with the terrified bear.

The scandal has caused an international storm and infuriated Royal Canin’s  French bosses who had no idea workers in Ukraine were supporting bear baiting.

Now, after strong protests from the Austrian-based Four Paws bear charity and pressure from the Sunday Express, Royal Canin will this week pledge to give £250,000 to find and save up to 20 bears.

Royal Canin is owned by Slough-based Mars, which makes Kitekat and Whiskas cat foods and Pedigree dog food (formerly known as Pedigree Chum). Mars prides itself on animal welfare and executives are said to be shocked by Royal Canin’s involvement in the Ukrainian savagery.

These sickening pictures, supplied by Four Paws, show a clearly frightened bear tied to a tree by a 30ft rope while hunting dogs taunt and bite it.

Sick gamblers place bets on the bloody outcomes of these appalling encounters. Bears seldom die but many suffer horrific injuries to their necks, bleeding profusely from deep wounds as fights progress.

Our Animal Welfare Policy states that we do not undertake, support or sponsor research that harms animals.

Herve Marc, global corporate affairs director for Royal Canin

Hunting dogs are deliberately trained to attack their necks to try to bring them down, often hanging on for several minutes when they sink their teeth into the bears. As one dog clenches the animal’s neck, another bites its legs.

On Tuesday, Four Paws chiefs will show Royal Canin executives in Ukraine the full horror of the fights.

Initially, the company said the support was “inadvertent” but after the Sunday Express showed executives pictures of Royal Canin cups presented for bear fights they changed their tune.

Herve Marc, global corporate affairs director for Royal Canin, originally wrote to the charity saying: “It appears that these photos were taken during a dog show in Dubovy Gay in the Ukraine, on April 27-28, 2013.

“Our colleagues in the Ukraine confirmed that we sponsored brand placements with one banner, two cups and a free product for a dog show and nothing else. There was no mention of the demonstration using the bear.

“As a result of our investigation, we have decided to immediately pull out of future sponsorship of this event and undertake some additional actions, such as reminding our sales and marketing teams around the globe of the relevant policies in place.

“Our Animal Welfare Policy states that we do not undertake, support or sponsor research that harms animals.”

By Friday afternoon, the company issued a very different statement saying: “Royal Canin unreservedly apologises for sponsoring the event where the bear baiting took place. As a company with knowledge and respect for animals at our heart, we condemn any activities that harm or endanger animals.

“Royal Canin has been absolutely horrified to see these images linked with our brand. The sponsorship of this event is not consistent with Royal Canin’s animal welfare policy, our philosophy of Pet First or our vision.

“This has been a humbling experience for Royal Canin. We again thank Four Paws International for bringing this practice to our attention and in doing so reminding us that diligence in ensuring our policy is followed is paramount.

“We look forward to working with all our partners to prevent animal cruelty through policy change and improved animal welfare practices. Specifically, Royal Canin will work to improve the welfare of the Ukrainian bears and dogs involved in bear-baiting.”

The Four Paws picture shows the name of the company on a bear baiting cup with an inscription for the “field champion” in the contest between two dogs and one bear. Another cup is for the winner of a contest between one dog and one bear.

Four Paws spokesman Dr Amir Khalil said: “The branded trophies for the contest made clear reference to bear baiting, carrying the following inscription ‘second championship between hunting dogs for bears and wild boar’. During our research material was passed to us which proves that a similar contest in February 2012 was sponsored by Royal Canin.”

The bear in the pictures on this page  survived and is being tracked by the charity which wants it to be taken to a bear refuge. Four Paws wants to see a bear refuge built to house the estimated  15 to 20 baiting bears in Ukraine.

A spokesman added: “Royal Canin has officially contacted Four Paws and a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday.  In this meeting Four Paws will emphasise the need for a swift and lasting solution for the bears in Ukraine.”

Taking Ag Gag to Court

The Animal Legal Defense Fund, along with PETA, has filed the nation’s first lawsuit against ag gag legislation, taking Utah to court for infringing on the free speech rights of activists, investigators, and journalists by criminalizing undercover investigations at factory farms. Utah’s ag gag law aims to prevent animal advocates and law enforcement from collecting evidence of egregious and illegal abuse of animals on factory farms.

Ag Gag & Animal Cruelty

Factory farms want to keep their cruel practices hidden from the public, but the public deserves the truth about how the billions of animals suffering on industrial farms are treated and whether or not laws are being broken that jeopardize food safety, workers’ rights, and environmental standards.

Shocking exposés from undercover investigations have revealed severe animal abuse onfactory farms, like animals beaten, kicked, maimed, and thrown by workers. Industrial agriculture has also brought us the unsavory likes of ammonia and pink slime in hamburgers, antibiotic-resistant “superbugs,” chickens abandoned by the thousands to starve to death, pregnant and nursing pigs held in gestation crates that never allow them to turn around, and sick and downed cowsdragged on the ground to become lunchmeat. Corporate agriculture’s massive profit ratio and proven inclination to hide in a dark world of secrecy makes journalistic and investigative freedom imperative to the well-being of animals across the nation—and to our own health and safety.

Journalistic Integrity

Utah’s ag gag law criminalizes free speech. That is why the Animal Legal Defense Fund is joining with journalists Will Potter and Jesse Fruhwirth; Daniel Hauff, an undercover investigations consultant specializing in factory farms; the political journal CounterPunch; and professor James McWilliams, as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.  “There’s a long history of investigative journalism in this country based on exactly the type of research and whistleblowing that these laws criminalize,” Will Potter explains. “Ag gag laws make it impossible to report stories that are vitally important to the public.”

Utah activist Amy Meyer is also a plaintiff in the case. In February, Amy made headlines by videotaping the operations at Dale Smith Meatpacking Company in Draper, Utah from the roadside. Amy was charged under Utah’s ag gag law—making her the first person in the nation to be prosecutedunder an ag gag law–although the charges were dropped after public outcry.

Ag gag laws aim to control our behavior by instilling fear of prosecution. This is legally known as the “chilling effect” because it intimidates people from acting and gathering information—even in legally-protected ways.  Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam recently vetoed a proposed ag gag law after the Tennessee Attorney General called the bill “constitutionally suspect.” Erwin Chemerinksy, a professor and dean of the law school at the University of California, Irvine, and a leading scholar of U.S. constitutional law, has weighed in in support of the lawsuit, explaining, “The Utah law is very much directed at restricting speech, and especially particular messages.  This is exactly what the First Amendment prohibits.”
