You’ve probably heard of the pet food brand Royal Canin, but what you definitely won’t have heard of is that in recent months, Royal Canin has sponsored dog shows in Ukraine which have featured the barbaric practice of bear baiting.

We find it hypocritical that a pet food producer who claims to put “dogs and cats first” enables this cruel activity, where hunting dogs in training are let loose on a chained up bear, who is left almost defenceless to the onslaught.

Based on our information, around 15 to 20 bears are exposed to bear baiting in Ukraine. We have brought this information to the attention of the Ukrainian authorities and hope to be able to act quickly.

We have also asked Royal Canin for a meeting to constructively discuss this situation and provide sanctuary for these abused bears, but they chose to ignore our solution.

This is outrageous and unacceptable. We need you to call on Royal Canin to take responsibility!

Please send your protest mail now. Thank you.

Brief Company History: It was founded in 1967 in a village of Gard, France, by the French veterinary surgeon, Jean Cathary. Its headquarters are now located in Aimargues, France.

In March 1972, Royal Canin was acquired by Guyomarc’h.

In 1990, French bank, Paribas, bought out the Guyomarc’h Group.

In July 2001, Paribas sold Royal Canin to Mars for more than 1.5 billion euros. Approximately 93% of the purchase price consisted of goodwill paid. Mars paid 22.3 times its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, and depreciation).[2][3] In March 2004, Royal Canin acquired the veterinary grade manufacturers/service providers, in the U.S. and Canada, the IVD, Medi-Cal and Techni-Cal brands from Del Monte Foods for $82.5 million.[4]

Veterinary Expertise and Breeder Relationships: In each country veterinary delegate teams, which sometimes number over 70 people, are specifically dedicated to professionals. In Europe, Royal Canin sponsors or is active in 3,500 dog shows and 400 cat shows each year. In France, for instance, 35 cynotechnicians work with 4,000 dog breeders and 400 clubs. A “Feline Club” is open to more than 2,000 breeders.

Veterinary and Peer-Reviewed Journal Research

The company is most known for researching the clinical formulation, testing, manufacturing and marketing of a range of breed-specific and symptom-specific diets for dogs and cats. In addition to food production, Royal Canin also issues numerous books with the support of world-class academics from veterinary departments: comprehensive encyclopedias on pets (4 million copies and published in 15 languages), guidebooks on canine and feline breeding, nutrient guides, academic and professional publications for veterinarians and breeders, and deluxe technical brochures on each breed targeted by a specific diet. Publications also include FOCUS, a scientific quarterly that appears in 11 languages and reaches over 70,000 veterinarians around the world, and 1,450 Waltham-Royal Canin veterinary publications (compared with almost 400 publications from the company’s closest competitor).

Factories

In 2008, Royal Canin had a revenue of over 1.5 billion euros80% outside of France – with approximately 4,500 employees worldwide.

Royal Canin has twelve production operations:

Aimargues, southern France

Cambrai, northern France

Johannesburg, South Africa

Rolla, Missouri, USA

Descalvado, Brasil

González Catán near Buenos Aires, Argentina

Dmitrov near Moscow, Russia

From May 1, 2007, many Mars products made in the UK became unsuitable for vegetarians. The company announced that it would be using whey made with animal rennet (material from a calf’s stomach lining, and a byproduct of veal), instead of using rennet made by microorganisms, in products including Mars, Twix, Snickers, Maltesers, Bounty, Minstrels and Milky Way.[37] The response from many thousands of consumers, particularly the Vegetarian Society‘s request for UK vegetarians to register their protests with Mars, generated a lot of press, and caused the company to abandon these plans shortly thereafter.[38] It has reportedly decided to switch to all-vegetarian sources in the near future in the UK.[39][40] On 18-Sep-2012, the 15-Jan-2010 press release could not be found in the “Press Releases” section of the Mars website; in Canada, the URL [1] redirected to the webpage, [2]. In January 2008, the Metro newspaper reported that Mars had allegedly begun to incorporate animal-derived rennet.[41]

Mars has come under criticism by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for funding animal tests which the group alleges are inhumane.[42] One study was conducted in collaboration with the Salk Institute regarding angiogenesis and spatial memory in which mice were given an ad libitum diet that included epicatechin, plant-derived flavonoid. One of the experiments involved groups of control and experimental animals, the latter of which were housed in a cage that included a running wheel for optional exercise for two hours a day, the former did not have access to a running wheel. Another experiment was the classical spacial memory assay, the Morris water maze. The study showed that the inclusion of epicatechin in the diet improved memory and angiogenesis, and more so if coupled with exercise.[43][44]

Mars has been criticized for buying cocoa beans from West African farmers who reportedly use unpaid or poorly paid child laborers. In 2009, Mars announced that, as of 2010, the company would only purchase cocoa from suppliers who meet environmental, labour and production standards. TransFair USA, an organization which certifies products as Fair Trade, applauded the move and expressed hope that it would include a provision for fair wages for laborers and farmers.[45] In 2010, Mars Inc. received the U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence.[46] In April 2010, Mars launched the MyCocoaPaper initiative, which claims to provide economic opportunities to women and families in Indonesia by making paper products out of cocoa bark and recycled office paper.[47]

In 2011, Mars and Fairtrade International announced an agreement to introduce the first Fairtrade labeled Mars product and to work together to enable farmers to have sustainable livelihoods and substantially increased productivity. The first Mars product to carry the Fairtrade mark will be Maltesers, to appear in stores in 2012 in the UK and Ireland.[48]

Bricks For Bears – (19/7) TARGET REACHED! – Brilliant News – But Dont Stop Buying !

Our recent post to help the Animals Asia campaign:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/07/18/urgent-bricks-for-bears-can-you-help-with-the-purchase-of-1-brick-see-below-for-details/

Conrats everyone; you did it !!

Current total – 4,089 bricks purchased – 19/7 0930hrs GMT.

Sanctuary secured!

You made it happen – 4,000 ‘bricks’!

A bear-sized THANK YOU to all those who bought a ‘brick’ in our China flood appeal. Thanks to your urgent response, we’ve hit our target of 4,000 virtual bricks – and now we can start work on securing our sanctuary!

Soon we’ll be able to secure the damaged river bank. For now, the most urgent work involves keeping the swollen river water within its banks. This means placing sandbags kept in place by PVC tarpaulins at vulnerable and collapsed sections along the bank.

We’re happy to report our brown bears are out of their cages and back digging holes and climbing trees. Thank you for an amazing response.

Donations are tax-deductible in Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, the UK and US.

Update on Sumatra

Last month Elephant Family and the Ecologist Film Unit set out to document the extreme threats to the critically endangered Sumatran elephant.

The short and powerful documentary can be viewed here.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry is close to accepting a proposal that would open Aceh’s pristine forest for mining, logging, and palm oil production. Over 1,700 of you have signed a letter to urge them to drop this proposal that would destroy over a million acres of vitally important elephant habitat. Thank you!

If you have not already signed and shared the letter at this link, please do so now, it only takes 30 seconds.

Please TAKE ACTION NOW – tell the Indonesian government to STOP THIS PLAN.

animals asia bricks

Bricks for Bears – Can You Help ?

Can you help buy a brick to save the bears ?

Current total of bricks purchased (as of am on 18/7) = 3,525.

Less than 500 bricks needed now.

We at SAV have done our bit with a purchase – can you buy a brick to help save the bears ?

Animals Asia web site = http://www.animalsasia.org/

A million thanks to you caring supporters who’ve donated to our China flood appeal already.

Your generosity will allow us to start urgent repair work at our sanctuary – including stabilising the river wall with wire baskets filled with rocks and concrete. But large sections of the river bank, perimeter fence and concrete path remain unsecure and repairs are needed urgently.

A few days ago, we asked you for 4,000 virtual bricks to fund the repair work, and we’re not there yet. (Click here for the latest tally.)

We’re immensely grateful to those who’ve donated already. If you haven’t given yet, please buy a brick today and keep our bears safe from harm. A virtual brick costs just £20/€20.

We still hope to reach our goal of 4,000 “bricks” in the next few days.

Please give now so we can repair the river wall and secure our sanctuary from further damage.

We hope to start work as soon as it is safe when the heavy rains and water levels subside. Should we exceed our goal, additional funds will go towards the care of our rescued bears.

PS: We’ve just heard that more torrential rain and severe storms are forecast over the next five days. We need to start on urgent repair work. If you haven’t donated already, please give today – it’s just £20/€20 for a virtual brick. To contact our office, please call +44 (0) 1579 347148 or email: ukqueries@animalsasia.org

Serbia: Is Rabies Now Being Invented by the Ministry Yet Again In Order to Undertake Mass Animal Killings ? – Maybe, As Serbia Has NOT Officially Informed the OIE of Any Outbreak, Which It Should If A Reality !

Serbian Flag

UPDATE 17/7/2013.

SAV have today written to the Serbian authorities regarding the alleged Rabies outbreak in Zabrezje and the hunting grounds ‘Posavina’.

You can read a copy of the letter by clicking on the following link:

SAV Rabies letter to Serbian government 17 7 2013

Slavica has supported the distribution of the SAV letter by ensuring that copies are sent to all the appropriate personnel at the Ministry and in government.  We have requested a response by the end of 19/7.  Again this can be sent by the authorities to Slavica, who will then forward on to us.  Alternatively, the authorities have our e mail address and can respond to us directly.

We hope the letter makes our feelings on this matter clear.

Regards Mark.

—————————————————————————————————

Original post starts here.

We call on the Serbian government and regional authority to either provide all the information to the OIE about this alleged ‘Rabies’ outbreak, or if they do not, then we can only assume one thing once again – that the Serbian government is again ‘inventing’ disease outbreaks within Serbia in order to undertake the mass and illegal killing of animals. –  SAV.

News in fro Slavica – 16/7/13:

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Serbia have adopted legislation No. 323-02-5571/2013-05 from the date of 10/07/2013 which applies to the area of Zabrezje in Obrenovac, and in the hunting grounds “Posavina”.

It declares that the area is infected with the disease Rabies.

An area of at least 10 km is declared to be in danger of this infectious disease – rabies.

And so as the Serbian authorities always wish because they do not have any useful animal management policies, according to the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, all unmarked and unvaccinated stray dogs and cats will be killed, and there will be increased hunting allowed of foxes and other wild animals who are living in this area.

Campaigners in Serbia have asked in writing that the Serbian authorities to PROVIDE EVIDENCE ABOUT RABIES PUBLICLY!

By going public, you have to provide the proof; put all your facts on the table for people to see – you cannot simply make a ‘Rabies area’ statement and then go on by allowing the legal the killing of all stray animals.

Our request is that the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management work in accordance with the law solve this problem rather than just inventing the issue of rabies yet again in order that they can then start killing all wild animals.!

Stray animals, as well as wild animals, should not be killed before any accurate analysis is undertaken to determine the facts.  These facts should then be made public.

Have we not seen the ‘invention’ of Rabies infected areas in the past in order that regional authorities can simply undertake a mass cull of animals rather than provide a proper stray animal management for reduction ?

Here is the link to global animal diseases which is constantly updated by the OIEnote that the issue of Rabies and Serbia does NOT appear to be given on the listing:

http://www.oie.int/wahis_2/public/wahid.php/Diseaseinformation/WI

As we say, probably just another ‘invention’ by the authorities to allow them to undertake mass and illegal animal killings.

Some of our past post relating to the ‘invention’ of rabies in areas where authorities wish to undertake mass killing of animals in order that they do not have to comply with existing Serbian legislation and provide care for stray animals:

A report into how Dutch livestock hauliers operate within the UK has now been written by Mark – founder SAV.

This shows that it is quite possible that ‘LIVE ANIMALS’ signage which should be carried on the outside of the vehicle in accordance with EU Regulation 1/2005 (protection of animals during transport); may have only been visible at inspection times – place of origin when animals were loaded, and at Ramsgate when they were on the ship to be exported to France.
