Serbia: Mass Rescue (18/06) of Dogs Due to be Killed at City Pound

Serbian flag 2

Jelena and the team rescued many dogs from the city pound yesterday (18/06).

All of these dogs were due to have been killed, but via collaboration with one of the vets at the pound who is more cooperative with Jelenas work, the dogs were allowed to be taken; but only 2 dogs for every one person in the team who wanted to help.

Today (19/06) it is hoped that a return journey will be made and many more dogs rescued from the pound.  Jelena does not have any spare space at her shelter as she is full to capacity, and to begin with, the rescued dogs had to be chained up outside of the shelter.  Now they have all been moved into the shelter and put onto additional land.

China: Usual Hatred but Some Future Hope – Mass Dog Cull Due to Rabies Fears, But Also First Animal Welfare Laws Drafted

CHINA DRAFTS LAWS TO PROTECT ANIMALS

Beijing (AFP) June 16, 2009
China is drafting its first law to protect animals from abuse, which could see serious violators end up in jail, state media reported Tuesday.

The draft, which will be published in August to solicit opinions from the public, covers violations such as abusing and abandoning pets, the English-language Global Times said.

Severe violators could be sent to prison, while lighter punishments would include fines and detention of fewer than 15 days, according to the report. It did not specify the jail terms that might be applied under the law.

Once the draft has been finalised, it would have to be approved by the National People’s Congress, the country’s parliament, before taking effect.

Animal welfare is not traditionally highly valued in Chinese culture, but improvements in the standard of living have led many, especially in the urban middle classes, to give it a higher priority.

“Animals and pets have the right not to be scared, hurt or killed by human beings,” the report cited Chang Jiwen, a social law expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as saying.

Chang said the draft law stressed the importance of animals’ right to life, a sound environment, and good physical and mental health, the report said.

Local media occasionally report on instances of animal cruelty. In the northern city of Hanzhong in May, about 30,000 dogs were rounded up and killed indiscriminately after a rabies outbreak.

DOG CULLS

Please read the distressing below article from Animals Asia Foundation, and as requested write a polite letter to your local Chinese embassy asking for an immediate stop to the Hanzhong cull and an end to cruel dog culls throughout China. Please also ask that the Chinese authorities work with Animals Asia to introduce effective, lasting and humane anti-rabies measures. See here for embassy addresses, or here for ideas.  For Hong Kong you can write to:

Gao Siren

Director

Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government HKSAR

160 Connaught Road West

Hong Kong

And remember don’t let this happen here!  Make sure all dogs are vaccinated against rabies from the age of 5 months, and that vaccinations are kept up to date.

Best wishes

It’s devastating to have to bring you such tragic, horrible news. A rabies outbreak involving 10 human cases, has prompted authorities in China’s northwest Shaanxi Province to order a cull that has already seen as many as30,000 dogs brutally slaughtered on the streets of Hanzhong and surrounding areas. This is one in 10 of the city’s dogs.

Despite our best efforts – and those of other NGOs and many desperate local people – because of two more human cases of rabies, the dogs are still being brutally hunted down by gangs of men and women wielding bloody sticks, metal hooks and ropes, then heartlessly clubbed to death. Some are cherished family pets, while others are strays that have already suffered enough in their cruel, short lives on the streets.

The gutters are running with blood, but it’s the hands of the Hanzhong authorities that are stained. The slaughtered dogs were on the streets only because these people still refuse to act on the evidence before their eyes – that the only way to manage stray-dog populations (and therefore rabies and other diseases) is to implement broad vaccination and trap, neuter, release (TNR) programmes.

Over the past two weeks, families have sobbed and fallen to their knees as their beloved dogs were snatched from their arms, roughly collared with rope and beaten to death before their eyes. Often the dogs wag their tails once or twice and look up pathetically between careless heavy blows to the face, head and spine. The dogs’ cries are spine-chilling.

Other dogs whimper and cower nearby – all of them terrified, knowing their turn will come soon. Some of the killers are local men, ordered by the authorities to help in the slaughter. Others are taking part willingly, even laughing as they brutalise the dogs.

We are so grateful to Jiang Hong, founder of the Small Animal Rescue Centre of Xian, who along with representatives of several local animal-welfare groups, made an urgent trip to Hanzhong to plead our case with the authorities.

Sponsored by Animals Asia, Ms Jiang’s group spent three traumatic days witnessing and recording the cull and offering officials help with dog control. In Yangxian town, they saw no dogs alive – just rotting carcasses scattered around the streets and in the waterways, causing a serious risk to public health.

The authorities stubbornly went ahead with the cull despite receiving advice from international and Chinese experts that culls do nothing to eradicate rabies. Our own letter – passed on to Hanzhong officials by Ms Jiang – was virtually ignored, the officials seemingly unmoved and uncaring.

I’m deeply saddened by these events. I’ve grown to love China and hate to see such wanton disregard for the country’s image in the world, let alone the sheer disregard for the suffering of people and animals. But this is just a small part of the story. Every day, we are seeing amazing developments, particularly through our relationships with more than 60 local animal-welfare groups throughout the country.

Even in Hanzhong, the scene of such bloodshed earlier this month, there is positive news. More than 200 residents attended the lakeside vigil, forming a poignant “SOS” with lighted candles to mourn the victims, many of them their pets; and because of the cull, some animal lovers have formed an organisation to lobby their local authorities to adopt stray-dog management measures.

Other municipalities are listening. Just last month, Animals Asia – along with other animal-welfare groups – was able to convince officials in Hehei, Heilongjiang Province to abandon a similar cull.

Please help us with this! We urgently need funds to equip local groups with the materials and information they need to convince their local governments to work with them. With grants from Animals Asia, these groups will be able to produce their own flyers, leaflets and banners to send to the authorities, the media and public along with our Dr Eddie Education Packs, and to continue our TNR programmes.

More and more cities are listening and implementing regulations to control stray dog and cat populations. It is so important that we keep the momentum going. It is the local people themselves who are bringing about these changes. They no longer want to live in fear of walking their dogs on the streets.

These people are willing to work hard, but most are poor and lacking resources. Please help us to help them.

Sincerely,

Jill

James Gray has been jailed for six months

Published Date: 12 June 2009

A horse trader found guilty of animal cruelty was today sentenced to six months in prison and banned from keeping horses, ponies and donkeys for life.

James John Gray (45) was also ordered to pay £400,000 costs.

His son, James Gray Junior (16), was ordered to complete an 18-month supervision order and banned from keeping equines for 10 years.

Wife Julie Gray (42) and daughters Jodie Gray (26) and Cordelia Gray (21) were ordered to complete 150 hours of community service and were banned from keeping equines for 10 years. Julie Gray was ordered to pay £750 in costs and Cordelia and Jodie Gray were ordered to pay £500 each in costs.

James Gray and his son James Gray Junior were found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to 40 equines on Friday 8 May after a 12-week trial, brought by the RSPCA. Along with wife Julie Gray and daughters Jodie Gray and Cordelia Gray they were also found guilty of failing to meet the welfare needs of 114 equines.

The family was prosecuted after RSPCA inspectors discovered more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys and the bodies of a further 32 equines at Spindle Farm near Amersham between Friday 4 and Wednesday 9 January 2008.

District Judge Andrew Vickers said of James John Gray at today’s hearing at Aylesbury Magistrates’ Court: “I know you have a strong background with equines so it is all the more sad that you stand convicted. It is something your father and grandfather would be ashamed of.”

All the defendants had denied all counts of cruelty and neglect.

Australia: New Petition – EU to Boycott Aus Meat Due to Organised Killings of 440,000 Joeys Every year. Please Sign

NEW PETITION SITE:-

Imagine the peaceful scene, a kangaroo looks out across the Australian night; her baby joey in her pouch and an adolescent kangaroo by her side. A shot rings out and she falls to the ground. Confused, the older joey hops away into the bush in panic. Helpless and terrified, the baby joey is ripped from his mother’s pouch and thrown to the ground.

A metal bar is raised and brought down with force; smashing his tiny head as his mother lies dying at his side unable to save her baby. This scene is repeated every single night in Australia, over and over again. Please help us end the largest massacre of land animals on the planet today.

Australia exports kangaroo meat to 48 countries. According to figures supplied by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in 2008 this business alone was worth $83.6 million.
Kangaroo shooters work all night, driving especially equipped four-wheel-drive vehicles that can usually carry up to 50 carcasses. Their prey is transfixed by a high-powered lamp and shot through the head. They are bled on the truck before being eviscerated and having their heads, tails, and sometimes limbs removed. If the kangaroo is a female with young, the National Code of Practice for Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies for Commercial Purposes states the hairless joey (in-pouch)must be killed by having it’s head cut off or a single forceful blow to the base of the skull.  For the young-at-foot a single shot to the brain or heart.

Dror Ben-Ami states in a new report that by conservative estimates 440,000 joeys die every year. There is also evidence, he says, that 40 per cent of the adults are not killed by a clean shot to the head, but by a more painful and illegal shot to the jaw or neck. Second, there is no sustainability for the declining kangaroo population.  In 1880 the population was estimated at some 240 Million animals (Chisholm 1963) but 2008 estimates put that same population at some ,  25.8 Million kangaroos.

This trade must be banned in Europe! Please sign this petition.

For further information about the diseases which each animal can be protected against by this offer, please visit http://www.vaccinationmonth.co.uk/aboutdiseases.php or see the details directly below:

Dogs

Canine parvovirus

Still widespread and often fatal. Causes severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. About 15,000 UK dogs are believed to have suffered from the disease in the last 12 months. The virus is spread in the faeces of infected dogs and survives outdoors for months or even years. Once contracted, there is no specific treatment; it can be effectively prevented through vaccination.

Leptospirosis

A bacterial disease that causes serious liver and kidney problems in humans as well as dogs (it’s called Weill’s Disease in humans). Spreads in the urine of infected animals, which can include rats; any animal excercised in or around ponds and watercourses is at risk. An estimated 4,000 cases are seen each year in the UK.

Distemper

Another potentially fatal disease, spread directly from dog to dog. Caused major epidemics in the 1960s and 1970s but has since been brought under control by vaccination. Causes respiratory problems, diarrhoea, vomiting, ‘hard pad’ and fits.

Hepatitis

This devastating disease may prove rapidly fatal. It affects the liver, and may also involve the kidneys, eyes and lungs of infected dogs. This virus is shed in the urine of infected dogs. Routine vaccination provices effective prevention against this disease

Kennel Cough

A very common and highly contagious respiratory disease which typically results in an unpleasant hacking cough. The cough can persist for weeks, and can be life-threatening in puppies and vulnerable dogs. Spreads through coughing, sneezing and nose-to-nose contact wherever dogs meet and mix – not just in boarding kennels. Effective vaccines given as drops up the nose are available to prevent disease due to the most significant bugs responsible for this disease.

Cats

Cat flu

Cat flu still affects an estimated 160,000 cats and kittens each year in the UK. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge and sore eyes. The disease is caused by several different bugs, some of which can be spread by ‘carrier animals’ which show no outward signs. It can prove fatal especially in the vulnerable, and can lead to unpleasant long-term complications for affected cats. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of disease.

Feline enteritis

Also known as feline panleucopaenia, this causes severe vomiting, loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Sometimes the disease can progress so quickly that a cat may die before any signs are noticed. The virus survives outdoors for months or even years. Cats can also be infected with canine parvovirus. Vaccination of cats will offer protection against canine parvovirus and feline enteritis.

Feline leukaemia

Caused by a virus, feline leukaemia suppresses the cat’s immune system and can cause cancer, anaemia and death. Spreads directly from the saliva of infected animals, to others it may meet and socialise with. Vaccination has proved effective in reducing this disease; a significant prevalence of infection in unvaccinated cats is reported.

Rabbits

Myxomatosis

The recent myxomatosis epidemic has been particularly marked with a devastating effect on pet rabbits and their wild cousins. Spread by fleas and other external parasites, it causes profound illness and disfiguring swellings around the eyes, face and genitalia. The disease frequently leads to death. Vaccination and parasite control are essential for prevention.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease

This is a viral disease of rabbits which usually proves rapidly fatal. Signs of the disease can be just sudden unexplained death or may include depression, collapse, difficulty in breathing, convulsions and bleeding from the nose. Rabbits can be vaccinated against this disease, although this vaccine is not included in the National Vaccination Month initiative. Please ask you veterinary surgeon for more details.

Horses

Equine Influenza

‘Flu in horses is a highly infectious viral disease which affects the respiratory tract including the windpipe and lungs. Widespread throughout the horse population, the virus is transmitted by direct horse-to-horse contact and indirect contact via contaminated people, tack, feed and equipment. Signs of ‘flu include a dry, harsh cough, fever, nasal discharge and lethargy. Following a bout of ‘flu, horses need complete rest for at least 6 weeks. Equine ‘flu is not contagious to humans.

Equine Herpes Virus

Equine herpes virus is a very common viral disease which is just as contagious as ‘flu. The virus can cause a severe loss of form and associated problems including abortion and paralysis and, like its human counterparts, the virus can recur time after time. The first signs are similar to those seen with ‘flu and include fever, nasal discharge and coughing that can last for up to 3 weeks. Equine herpes virus is not contagious to humans. Vaccination against equine herpes virus is not available as part of National Vaccination Month

Strangles

Strangles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus equi. Horses become depressed, dull, develop a fever and nasal discharge and stop eating. The glands around the throat swell, forming abscesses. In some outbreaks and in up to ten percent of cases, these abscesses spread to other parts of the body (a condition known as ‘bastard’ strangles) which is nearly always fatal. Strangles is transmitted from horse-to horse and indirect contact via people, tack, feed and equipment. There is currently no vaccine available against strangles.

Tetanus

Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetanii which can be found in soil and horse droppings. Although most animals can be affected horses are particularly susceptible. The bacteria enter the body through wounds and punctures of the sole of the foot are common routes of infection. Horses will develop muscle stiffness resulting in a “rocking-horse” stance and “lock-jaw”. Unfortunately this condition is usually fatal.

Please, don’t waste time and let your animals health suffer – download your vouchers now and get vaccinating !

Ireland: Pig Abuse Investigation Undertaken and Exposed by ARAN

Ireland

Congratulations to our good friend John  Carmody and all the crew at ARAN for their excellent work on this investigation – please read on ! – SAV

ARAN Web Site – http://www.aran.ie/

——————————————

Pig

Photo: ARAN

Animal Rights Action Network <http://www.aran.ie/> has just released
heartbreaking undercover footage obtained directly inside an Irish pig
breeding facility in Ireland.

The footage is today front page headlines in The Irish Sun.

The horrific footage shows cruelty to pigs, including a grown adult pig,
which, in the video appears to be prolapsing, (her insides hanging out from
her anus). The pig is repeatedly hit forcefully over the head, crushing her
skull as she screams in pain, whilst continuing to be violently hit with a
sledgehammer by the employees at the facility
. One employee that works
there, claims this way of killing the animals is an every day occurrence and
is the normal way to do so at the facility-although not legal by any
standards-this way of killing the animals helps to save costs without
calling for a vet to ‘humanely’ kill the pigs that the facility feels they
cannot sell onto slaughterhouses in Ireland and abroad.

During the investigation many baby piglets have been found dead with their skulls all bashed in, ironically killed in the very same way. This way of killing pigs
that are unwanted violates Irish animal welfare laws.

ARAN has furnished the Department of Agriculture in Dublin with the findings of the investigation, after a lengthy meeting with department officials nothing yet has came
about. The Gardai (the Irish police – SAV) are now investigating the matter further. Irish media outlets have also came out supporting our finding’s.

Some other footage obtained inside the facility include:-

* Workers were seeing smashing the head of a live grown adult pig whom
appears to be pro-lapsing with a sledgehammer, the animal continues to take
the blows of the hammer whilst screaming in pain, before she eventually
drops to the ground and convulses, all this been watched by employees of the
facility.

* A Truck full of dead baby piglets whilst another grown pig lies dead
for up to two days as stated by the investigating employee.

* Dead piglets lie among live piglets.

* Grown adult pigs confined to tiny farrowing crates, the pigs cannot
move whilst their piglets gather around.

“Every time we pull back the curtain on slaughterhouses or their animal
factories, we reveal atrocities that would make most people lose their
lunch,” says Stephan Wymore for ARAN. “The horrendous abuse documented at
this facility clearly violates Irish animal welfare law, and we’re asking
that these people and this company be held accountable
.”

If you would like to help stop this cruelty, please consider sending ARAN an
urgent donation today to help us get footage inside of other
slaughterhouses, fur farms, circuses, laboratories, bloodsports and much
more. ARAN is devoted to establishing rights for all animals.

Thankfully, because of loyal and kind supporters, who send us donations, we can go on to help expose all this needless suffering and cruelty, but we can do much more
if we get your donation today!

Establishments such as this pig breeding facility would rather you not send ARAN a donation, we need not wonder why.

Thank you,

Animal Rights Action Network

Ps, ARAN would like to thank everyone who supports our work either through
sending donations, attending our peaceful and eye-catching events, helping
with letter writing, phone calls and emails, organizing local events in your
area, helping with ARAN’s campaign work and much more – together we are all
truly doing something big to help bring about a day where no animals will
have to be cruelly killed or tormented for human use. ARAN appreciates all
your support for our work here in Ireland.

Burgos Pig Hell

In remembrance of those who died there.

Lifeless and wrinkled in hell they died, a result of mans dominion.

The rain came down from the glimpses of sky on the bloodied bodies in the barn.

As pink piglets cried, just left to die the hammers drained life from them.

The men they pulled and kicked and swung the implements of torture

The piglets destined for your plate were beaten till their skulls cracked.

Lets buy a pig upon a spit ,the kids will love  the crackling.

What price your ham and pudding man, what price your breakfast rasher?

The sick were bludgeoned and abused as others watched in horror.

Why can’t you see the horror here, why can’t  I see my mother.

My eyes are filled with blood now, my legs are bruised and broken.

My brothers are already dead, I hear my mother choking.

The hammers thud it hits the ground as blows smash up her body.

My body’s cold, I see my mum, they’ve thrown her on the others.

Oh let me die, the earths no place for anyone but humans.

Little  piglets we just ask for life , why use us for your pleasure.

Bernie Wright.
