BOK-days are the hottets day of the year in Korea.

They are also the days in which the greatest number of dogs are consumed. Many Koreans belive that eating dog meat will alleviate the the summer heat and increase a mans sexual prowess.

BOK-days this summer are: 14. and 24. of July and 13. august.

The Korean government has not yet baned the slaughter and consumption of companion animals. The Korean government is much responsible for continuing cruelty to and abuse of Korean animals. As long as the consumption of dogs and cats continues, so does cruelty to animals. Therefore the government must establish the law that prohibits the slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats for meat.

A bill to ban gas chambers that has passed the New York State Assembly the past 2 years but not the Senate, has once again been introduced.
 
The proposed law ONLY applies to municipal animal shelters. It does NOT apply to research laboratories or dog breeders who may be using a gas chamber to euthanize unwanted, old or sick animals.  We would like to see these animals included.

In addition, this law makes it a crime for animal shelters to transfer animals to other rescue groups to enhance the chance of adoption. Right now an animal may only leave by adoption or redemption. Shelters are currently being cited by the state for such transfers. We would want there to be no crime in animal shelters transferring adoptable animals to rescue groups. Many lives could be saved this way.

NY State Agricultural Bill AB 999 (A00999, 999–B) would mandate except in an emergency the use of injection of sodium pentobarbital or a sodium pentabarbital solution to euthanize animals in public shelters. 

Intracardiac injection, commonly known as heartstick, could only be used on unconscious, comatose or “heavily sedated” animals.

Animals could not be left unattended and death would be required to be confirmed. Failure to comply with either of these requirements could mean a $500 fine. 

The bill would require gas chambers to be dismantled and removed. Failure to do that could mean a $500 fine.

In an emergency gunshot could be used to kill an animal. An  emergency means when an animal is  posing  an imminent  threat  of serious physical injury to a person or to another animal, where the use of a humane method of euthanasia  is  rendered impossible or in cases where a severely injured animal is suffering irremediably.

Violations of this law could mean up to a  year in jail and a $1000 fine.

Defra is running a consultation on greyhound racing.  Current proposals are woefully inadequate and do nothing to tackle the main causes of greyhound suffering. This is your chance to help stop the cruelty.

The proposals include compulsory licensing of tracks, vets to be present at all race events, all dogs to be microchipped and injury records to be kept (but not made public). Although these changes are positive, they do nothing to tackle the main problems such as destruction of dogs deemed not suitable for racing (up to 12,000 per year), poor husbandry, injuries and shortage of homes available for retired dogs.

While the industry is focused on making a profit then the welfare of the dogs will always be neglected, sometimes with horrific consequences.

Please fill out your details and send the message which urges Defra to outlaw betting on greyhound racing, as it has been in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and much of the USA.

The European and International Community of Animal Defenders has learned from the internet that a macaque named Kora, has been abused for ten years by wrestlers belonging to ‘Dragon Gate’, a Japanese professional wrestling group.

The group is starting its first US tour.

Kora lives in the dojo and it is known that the wrestlers submitted the animal to the following :

– Choked him by the neck until it passed out. 

– Burned him with charcoal. 

– Threw him into a tub of boiling hot water. 

– Blew air into his mouth so it would defecate itself.

– Gave him sake (Japanese alcohol) regularly until it would pass out.

– Dragged it around by a chain on its neck.

– Attached fire crackers to him and lit them

– Locked him in a box and sprayed antiperspirant inside, causing it to freak out.

The wrestlers implicated are Shingo Takagi, Akira Tozawa and Katsuo/Yuki Ono, after they openly blogged about the abuse.

An other wrestler, named Yohei Fujita, alias Ryoma, considers the treatment the group gives the monkey to be very funny.

It is obvious that the animal abusing Dragon Gate group casts a slur on the good name of Japan.

As for us, we are shocked beyond words over this case of most disgusting animal abuse and consequently:

– We request Japan that the monkey will be taken away from the wrestling group and never will be returned to these unworthy people;

– We request Japan never to let Dragon Gate have an animal in their possession again;

– We request Japan to take their professional license away from the wrestling group Dragon Gate.

– We request Japan that wrestling group Dragon Gate will be severely punished and that the abusers will be put in prison.

Demonstations against the animal abusers will happen in the USA tour unless you take immediate action to stop any animal belonging to these abusers.

Concert Consoles Puppies on Dog Day

For human beings, summer is a thrilling season. Millions of Koreans escape from the hustle-and-bustle of daily life to enjoy their freedom under the blazing sunshine.

For dogs, however, it must be an appalling period as tens of thousands of chubby dogs are slaughtered for use in an energy-boosting meal.

Any sense of guilty?

An inaugural concert for puppies and dogs was held in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province, Tuesday.

It marks “Chobok” ― the first of the so-called dog days in July-August when dog meat soup called “boshintang” is consumed nationwide as a traditional health food for summer.

The concert symbolizes the changing lifestyle of Koreans, with more and more men refraining from eating dog meat these days out of concerns at the content of boshintang.
Due to a lack of supply, boshintang sometimes contains other animal meat, including rabbit and cat. Sometimes ill and stray dogs are used for boshintang.

On the other hand, many young Koreans love to live with puppies and dogs as pets, and this new generation has grown up without eating dog soup.

A Seoul-based 64-member symphony orchestra and popular K-pop singers went to Cheongdo, 320 kilometers south of Seoul, to play in the unprecedented event, hosted by famous comedian Jeon Yoo-sung. Cheongdo ward office was the sponsor.

The 60-year-old comedian, now retired, is well known for his eccentric and norm-breaking repetoire.

“Dogs have sacrificed themselves a lot for humans. But we have done nothing for them. That’s the reason for the event,” Jeon said. “I hope this event will help refresh their minds during the stressful season.”

Raising the curtain at 8 p.m. with the “Light Cavalry Overture” composed by Suppe, the orchestra played a variety of classical and contemporary music pieces, whose themes either originated from dogs or were helpful in consoling their “sacrifice.”

The concert went on for about two hours under torrential rain.

To enter the venue, small dogs were required to wear a name tag, while wearing a muzzle was necessary for larger dogs, the office said.

“Among the music played were marching songs such as `Pomp and Circumstance’ composed by Elgar, and others by Beethoven. This is to keep participating dogs from being disheartened so much during the season,” Jeon said. “I am considering making it an annual event.”
