USA and International: Howl for the Wolves and Get the Law Changed – NOW !

unst0001

HOWL FOR THE WOLVES – Especially Americans, but all nationalities can contribute by sending a message – read on.

On May 4, government agents will be free to open fire. Once the public hunts begin, more than 600 wolves could be killed. Not even newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers will be protected from the crossfire.

We’re counting on you to help us build a national outcry to stop this wildlife massacre before it starts. Please add your voice to The Big Howl by sending an urgent message to Interior Secretary Salazar to call off the guns!

It only takes a few seconds — and could save the lives of hundreds of wolves in Idaho and Montana.

That’s why NRDC is launching The Big Howl campaign to mobilize Americans everywhere to protect wolves in the Northern Rockies from the crossfire.

Add your voice now to our campaign. Tell Interior Secretary Salazar to reverse his decision to kick wolves off the endangered species list.
This is absolutely the wrong time to rip away federal protections from these struggling wolves. Over the past year, the wolf population in Yellowstone National Park has declined by 27 percent, with more than 70 percent of wolf pups succumbing to disease.

One pack alone lost all 24 of its pups!

One pack alone lost all 24 of its pups!

If the federal protections are lifted on May 4 as planned, newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers traveling outside national parks will be in the line of fire.
That’s why NRDC and our partners are filing suit in federal court to block this disastrous policy. But we must do more: we must raise a nationwide outcry that the Obama Administration cannot ignore.
And so we’re calling on everyone who cares about wolves to take part in The Big Howl campaign.

Please call on the Interior Department to go back to the drawing board and submit this cruel plan to the kind of rigorous scientific review the Obama Administration has promised.

Because you have always stood up for wildlife, I’m contacting you first to take part in The Big Howl campaign.

After you send your own message, I will let you know about an easy way to spread the word to your friends and family. We need at least one million messages to save the wolves — so get ready to rally your friends and family to add their own voices to The Big Howl.

Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke
President
Natural Resources Defense Council

P.S. Hearing the wolf howl after you take action is a poignant reminder of why we must act swiftly to save these treasured icons of the American West — before their federal protections are lifted on May 4. So please speak out today, and then tell everyone you know to take part in The Big Howl.

As you will see in the text below, it is essential that we get as many MEPs to vote in support of this declaration as possible BEFORE the 7th May deadline.

Our previous SAV post:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2009/02/02/vital-action-for-european-strays-and-pet-animals-a-request-to-every-eu-citizen-to-act-and-act-now-thank-you/

gives full e mail contact details for every single MEP within the EU Parliament.  Full national lists are provided which you can simply copy and paste into your mail box.  A sample letter is provided below which can be copied and used as a templet.  Please personalise if you wish to give additonal impact.

Although we think you will sign up immediately, if you do need further justification, please take a look at the photographs of European strays at the end of this post.  These pictures are just a minute selection of the continual abuse and suffering that stray animals suffer.

You can help to end this suffering by signing the petition – please do so.

Thank You.

I vote »Yes« for stray animals!

Dear animal lover,

In Europe stray dogs and cats suffer tremendous torments each day — they are hunted and maltreated, beaten up and poisoned; they are caught and kept in so-called »animal shelters« that provide no escape: in these camps thousands of stray animals are penned up to meet a cruel death.

EU parliamentarians Alain Hutchinson, David Hammerstein und Neil Parish have written a declaration on the welfare of pets and stray animals (PDF).

The declaration claims hard punishment for abandoning and maltreating pets and stray animals.

EU Member States are requested to commit themselves to regulate the overpopulation of stray animals and to lay sterilization and vaccination down in law and to implement them accordingly.

A vote on this declaration will be held in EU parliament shortly — the time limit to sign this declaration is May 7th, 2009.

It is crucial that a majority of the EU parliamentarians’ votes are obtained for this declaration.

Please support us by asking EU parliamentarians to sign this petition:

Sample Letter:

Dear Member of the EU Parliament,

With my signature I express my support of the written declaration on the welfare of pets and stray animals pursuant to Rule 116 of the Rules of Procedure by Alain Hutchinson, David Hammerstein and Neil Parish on the welfare of pets and stray animals in all EU Member States, EU accession countries and other European countries.
I ask you insistently to sign this declaration in order to support the animal protection law as proposed.

I consider this declaration not only as an act of humanity but as a necessary action in a modern and forward-looking Europe. Knowing which parties and parliamentarians plead for animal protection issues considerably influences my electoral behaviour.

Thank you very much indeed!

Despite the existence of animal protection laws stray animals have become a questionable source of income in many European countries: their capture, custody and killing offer good business opportunities by involving public money originally designated to improve the stray animals situation.

Europe (EU): Your Support Needed – European Import Ban on Seal Products Now a Step Closer

http://www.respectforanimals.co.uk/home.php/home/more/european_import_ban_on_seal_products_now_a_step_closer/

YOU can make a difference – ** URGENT ACTION REQUIRED **

A vote, by all MEPs in the full European Parliament, is due to take place in April or May this year.

Respect for Animals   unkg00016

is encouraging people to sign a petition in support of a full ban at: http://www.bansealtrade.eu

It literally takes seconds to do – SAV ask everyone to please sign this petition on line and get the EU to impose the the ban on the import and trade in seal products across Europe.  Make a huge difference for seals and for the future.

The following is a direct copy of information on the Uk organisation ‘Respect for Animals’ web site –

European Import Ban on Seal Products Now a Step Closer

As harp seal pups are being born on the ice floes off Canada’s east coast, and seal hunters are preparing for another commercial-scale slaughter at the end of this month, Respect for Animals welcomes the vote which paves the way for a full Parliamentary vote on the seal trade issue in the very near future.

The committee rejected a report by Liberal Democrat MEP, Diana Wallis (Yorkshire & the Humber). Wallis’ report proposed certification and labelling of seal products, an option branded “unenforceable” by other MEPs, many of whom have called for an unconditional ban on the trade in all seal products.

Nicki Brooks, director of Respect for Animals, said today: “The vote today has shown that Parliamentarians have listened to the concerns of the citizens of Europe, the majority of whom want to see a full, unconditional ban on the trade in all seal products.

“The annual commercial kill that takes place in Canada, every March, is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet – over one million seal pups have been clubbed or shot to death over the last four years alone. Legislation stopping the trade across Europe will close down markets for the pelts of these seal pups.”

Research by veterinarians has shown that the commercial slaughter of seal pups is inherently inhumane.

In 2006, a record 425 MEPs voted for an end to commercial seal slaughter; in July 2008, the European Commission issued a proposal to bring an end to the import and trade in seal products across Europe.

A vote, by all MEPs in the full Parliament, is due to take place in April or May this year.

Respect for Animals is encouraging people to sign a petition in support of a full ban at: http://www.bansealtrade.eu

Please Pass Grace’s Bill to outlaw Gas chambers in GA

Target: Tom McCall Chairman of House of Committee of Agriculture

Sponsored by: animal lovers Grace’s Law – Ga. House Bill 606 – this is a bill that would outlaw the use of gas chambers for euthanasia by Georgia’s animal control facilities. The bill is named after a dog who survived the gas chamber. Quite the opposite – the shrieks and screams of the unfortunates put to death in this way are a testimony to the lie Only ONE PERCENT of all shelters in the U.S. still use this method. There are 15 shelters in Georgia that use the gas chambers. Georgia needs to come into the 21st century, and MUST stop literally torturing animals to death. Georgia Voters for Animal Welfare needs YOUR help to end the madness. Here is your opportunity to make a difference. Now comes the critical part. Last year, a similar bill died in committee. We only have until March 12 to get the bill out of committee, so time is of the essence.

Tom McCall is the Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture. His address is: 226 State Capitol, Georgia 30334 Phone: (404) 656-5115 Fax: (404) 463-4122

Renewed Killing of stray animals in Serbia:

In the Serbian city of Nis the killing of animals living in the streets and animals living in pounds continues, despite the fact that the Mayor of Nis, urged by animal protection associations all over Europe, had promised to solve the problem of overpopulation by castration.

Animal Care Austria learned recently that the City of Nis will provide millions of  Dinars in 2009 for killing instead of castrating stray animals! Therefore, Animal Care Austria is asking you again for your help to stop these useless and unnecessary killings of stray animals in Nis (Serbia).

ACA has several on-going projects in Austria and in other countries, including the one in Nis. (For further details see http://www.animalcare-austria.at.)

Heavy protests by local animal protectors, ignored by the authorities, could not prevent a recent series of mass killings in Nis, which were carried out under the pretext of hygienic reasons. Since the authorities of Nis have failed to introduce timely castration programs (a common practice in countries with a low level of animal protection), the number of stray animals has risen dramatically.

However, the killing of animals to reduce overpopulation is unacceptable!

Animal Care Austria strongly supports castration as one of our main missions (“for every animal adopted in Austria, a local dog is castrated”), and we must act now!  It is our opinion that the only chance to improve animal protection in Nis, and to finally stop these medieval and cruel killings, is to join forces with numerous domestic and foreign animal protection associations and to apply pressure on the local authorities. Therefore, we would like to ask you, as private persons or representatives of your organization, for your help.

Please support ACA and other animal rights associations in their efforts to stop these horrible actions and to improve the living conditions of stray animals. Through the writing of joint petitions, the reporting on the situation in Nis at home and abroad, and the relentless pressuring of local authorities in Nis to initiate a castration project, we will succeed.

Please, protest against this cruelty to innocent animals, and send the following message to the e-mail addresses listed.

Suggested Text:

The lack of preventive measures does not justify the killing of stray animals. All humans, especially those in power, are obliged to help in reducing the overpopulation of stray animals by large-scale castration projects.

With this letter of protest animal lovers and animal protection associations from Austria and its European neighbors urge the authorities in the City of Nis to reconsider and change their actions in order to stop the killing of innocent animals.

Please, send your letter of protest to:
