CROATIA: starving dogs eat up horse while still alive!

A gruesome video has been uploaded onto youtube 2 days ago, showing starving dogs eating up a horse, lying down, barely alive, but still moving.

According to Croatian animal activists, the farm where the video was shot, and the animals – both dogs and horses – allegedly belong to the chairman of the Society for horse breeding from Oborovo, Branko Borković.

“Everything was so loud and brutal that the whole village gathered around and witnessed this horror. The dogs were so starved and in a state of apathy that they attacked the horse. And so someone called the police and press while the horror was still taking place. But no one could stop it because the dogs were so hungry and out of control”, said a person who was at the scene…

See video (*** Warning: VERY GRAPHIC ***  !):

According to the person who started a petition, the police have already intervened against Branko Borković on a couple of occasions, following complaints regarding animal cruelty, but due to a lack of evidence, nothing was found at that time.

The petition that we kindly ask you to sign, calls on the local authorities to investigate and to punish this recent repulsive and barbaric crime to the full extent of the law.

About This group is created to help volunteers from Belgrade HumAnimal who rescue dogs from the Pozega horror shelter in Serbia. It is estimated over 7000 dogs have already been killed there and it is well known the animals are tortured and literally starved – we are trying to save as many as possible by reserving them vetting them/placing them in private kennels and finding them fosters or adopters.

We will raise funds, build awareness and assist with lobbying the government.

This infamous torture dog pound ironically called “Our Home”:

– is catching dogs from 7 cities in Serbia
– after a few weeks dogs are killed with t61 injenction and no preparation
– or they are strangled or beaten!!!
– dogs are literally starved before they die
– most dogs can no longer walk
– and can barely lift their heads

Pups only couple of months old are curled up on the ground and do not react any more to the human voice.

It is well known that the shelter supervisor and the veterinarian torture the dogs. There are 20 criminal charges against the management of the pound, but they continue to catch and kill these poor animals.

– it is thought around 300-400 dogs are killed per month.
– Local Authorities pay 100 euros per dog to the pound!
– it means they earn around 400.000 euros for year

**  In the last 2 weeks 57 dogs have been saved by Belgrade group HumAnimal and we are now raising funds for 20 more!!!! (10 more this week/10 next) **

– many of those saved have a serious health problems, due to being saves and sterilisations performed by incompetent veterinarians.
– some are fighting for their lives
– 4 have very sadly died due to having been starved or distemper

PLEASE HELP IN WHATEVER WAY YOU CAN TO STOP THE HORROR!

HumAnimal has saved over 250 dogs from Pozega so far and also from other kill shelters and or where dogs are being killed but live in horrible conditions as Stara Pazova, Rakovica in Belgrade etc – approx 400 dogs rescued in total.

Over 250 dogs have been adopted in Italy, some in Germany and some in Serbia.

We will not tolerate any profanities or arguing on this site. We are all here to help these poor dogs and will use all our energy and resources solely for that goal.

Petition wording:

The infamous dog pound, ironically called “Our Home” in city Pozega in Serbia is catching dogs from 7 cities in Serbia. After a few weeks in the shelter dogs are being killed with t61 injection with no proper sedatives or preparation.
Dogs in this shelter are beaten and literally starved before they die. Most dogs can no longer walk and can barely lift their heads. Pups only couple of months old are curled up on the ground and do not react any more to the human voice.

Due to a sterilisation performed by incompetent veterinarians dogs die infection. Instead of surgical thread, rope is used to saw sterilisation wounds.

It is well known that the shelter supervisor and the veterinarian torture the dogs. There are currently 13 charges against the management of the pound, but they continue to catch and kill these poor animals.

– It is thought that around 70-90 dogs are killed every week!!!

This means the shelter earns around 400.000 euros per year.
– The pound charges volunteers 28 Euros per dog to get them out of the horror shelter

If you are an EU citizen then please go to out ‘EU Links’ tab at the top of the page and use the links provided to provide this information to your national MEPs.

Explain that you are very concerned about the killing of dogs at this (Pozega) pound and that you wish all EU funding to be stopped that supports the abuses at this shelter.

At a meeting on 17th April in Belgrade we were unofficially informed via Milos Skalicki of the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, that the Serbian authorities were going to call for ‘better implementation of animal welfare laws’.

If the pound at Pozega is not somewhere where the Ministry should be acting immediately, then we don’t know what is !

You can see the Ministry response to the meeting below:

Response from the Ministry of Agriculture to letter DO NOT CHANGE ANIMAL WELFARE LAW IN SERBIA

TRANSLATION

On 04/09/2013 you sent an e-mail to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in which you expressed the view that the Conference about the welfare of abandoned animals, organized by TAIEX and Veterinary management on 17.04.2013, should not be held because it is an attempt to make changes to the Animal Welfare Law, relating to the ban of killing animals.

We inform you that the Conference on this issue is of great importance and it is opportunity to meet Directors of Veterinary management from this region, representatives of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), representatives of the European Commission and the RSPCA – all to talk about the problem of abandoned animals. The aim of this Conference was to share experiences of countries in the region related to the problem of stray animals, control of their population, the role and responsibilities of government agencies and non-governmental organizations.

The allegations from some animal welfare organizations are incorrect – who are calling for protest rallies and petitions against the Serbian authorities, NGO organizations and speakers at this Conference – because, as stated above, this Conference hasn’t been organized as “attempt” to make changes in the existing Animal Welfare Law, but rather for better implementation of same.

Veterinary management has good cooperation with many well-meaning animal welfare associations and non-governmental organizations, of which some actively participate and provide help to us in achieving our mutual goal of animal welfare.

Sincerely

URGENT: Live goat exports exposed

** WARNING – ANIMAL ABUSE / SUFFERING **

Live Goat Export Cruelty Video:

http://www.banliveexport.com/take_action/malaysia-goat-cruelty/

Animals Australia Link:  http://www.animalsaustralia.org/

Mark,

Few Australians would realise that right now, in rural areas across the country, wild goats are being rounded up, packed in crates, and exported for slaughter. Even fewer have ever seen inside this trade.

Last month, Animals Australia conducted our first ever investigation in Malaysia—Australia’s largest live export market for goats. Once again, we discovered that the new live export ‘rules’ are being blatantly disregarded. And as a result, animals have been left totally exposed to cruel treatment.

Across 6 facilities in Malaysia, goats were filmed being roughly handled; stuffed into bags and car boots; and sold into unapproved facilities—often with their ear tags removed to conceal this clear breach of export regulations.

Like so many animals in the live trade, in their final moments of life, these goats had their throats cut whilst still conscious. You won’t witness such graphic vision in this video, but you will feel their pain, sense their fear and hear their cries.

This week Minister for Agriculture, Joe Ludwig, claimed that “99%” of exported animals are treated “humanely”. This could not be further from the truth. With a government and opposition who unwaveringly defend this trade, with regulations fundamentally failing to protect animals everywhere we look, it would appear that live exporters are getting away with 99% of the cruelty in this trade.

But with your help, we can ensure they can’t get away with it anymore. Every investigation, every email and phone call to a politician—every action you take—brings us a step closer to ending this trade in cruelty.

Please send an urgent message to our political leaders, calling on them to spare animals from such cruelty, by supporting a ban on live export.

Some years ago I had the pleasure of having a goat, Wilma, as part of my ‘animal family’ and can attest to how smart, playful and curious they can be. As companion animals they will show unconditional love and loyalty, just like a dog.

But this is also the face of a lesser-known victim of Australia’s live export trade. Never before has the Australian public seen a glimpse of what these highly intelligent animals face once they leave our shores — until now.

Animals Australia investigators recently returned from Malaysia — the largest export market for live Australian goats — where we documented their ‘journey’ for the very first time. What we witnessed was heartbreaking — but hardly surprising. In this, the 20th live export exposé, exporters were again caught flouting the ‘rules’ and abandoning frightened animals to a cruel and terrifying ordeal.

We’ve ensured that you won’t see any graphic images or slaughter vision in our latest investigation — which means that everyone can watch this important video and help share these animals’ stories. But we can tell you that after our cameras stopped filming, these animals will have shared the same fate that most Australian exported animals endure — their throats were cut while fully conscious.

If that sounds disturbing, consider for a moment that this week, Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig insisted publicly that “99%” of exported animals are treated “humanely”. This is not only completely at odds with the evidence — it’s completely at odds with the views of most Australians who know that cutting the throat of a fully conscious animal is not an act that will ever be considered “humane”.

Mark, it’s hard to understand why our political leaders are so quick to defend live exports each and every time irrefutable evidence of animal cruelty is exposed — particularly when it is worth so little to the economy. There was a time we thought that presenting the evidence and the case for change would be enough, but increasingly we find ourselves engaged in a PR war against a barrage of lies and industry spin — convenient but false claims that many politicians seem to swallow all too easily. Your voice is the most powerful tool there is to remind our leaders that Australians won’t settle for spin while animals continue to suffer.

Every civilising step in human history has been fought and ridiculed before being accepted as self-evident. This battle wages fiercely because we are closer than ever before to ending live export — so we will continue to calmly rebut every untruth, thoughtfully answer every question, and passionately represent every animal.

This is our promise to them, and this is our commitment to you, our valued friends and cherished allies for animals.

Dear Mark,

Just over a month ago my heart sank as I opened an email from a brave Egyptian veterinarian. He was seeking our help after witnessing horrendous abuses of Australian cattle in Egypt.

He described terrified animals having their eyes stabbed, tendons slashed, throats brutally cut open and being butchered alive. Their ordeal was exposed nationally tonight on ABC’s 7.30 program.

It was the worst kind of déjà vu. I had been to Egypt before, in 2006, and he could just as easily have been describing the same horrors that shut down the trade with Egypt then.

I immediately travelled to Egypt with a co-investigator to speak to Dr Abdelwahab and to gather further evidence.

The problem was much bigger than initially thought. The cruelty witnessed was systemic. Australia’s live export industry had purpose-built two supposed ‘state of the art’ abattoirs that were being used to abuse and brutally slaughter Australian animals. Once again — the live export trade has been exposed for knowingly supplying animals to extreme cruelty.

I have no doubt that if these animals could speak, they would be asking: Why? Why should any animal be stabbed in the eye — for the mistakes of the live export industry? Why has this industry decided that it is acceptable for exported animals to have their throats cut while fully conscious? And why, when countless animals have suffered these same abuses in Egypt in the past, are we seeing history repeat itself in 2013?

They will never be able to ask these questions. But you will. Click here to add your voice to the hundreds of thousands of caring people who are speaking out on their behalf. In an election year, even politicians who won’t be swayed by the plight of animals, will be swayed by your vote.

Mark, I understand how upsetting images of animal abuse can be. I don’t want to shock you, and I do know you care. So if you click here, you can send an instant message right now — without needing to see any graphic images if you choose not to.

Please accept my most sincere thanks for helping to tell these animals’ stories — and save others from suffering.

P.S. As you read this, live exporters are making moves to send animals back into these same brutal abattoirs. We cannot let this happen. Please join me and take urgent action today and help end the cruelty of live export, forever.

Terrified animals making desperate efforts to escape after having their throats cut open; others with eyes stabbed; leg tendons slashed; and being butchered while still alive… This is the nightmare endured by animals who were exported live from Australia to Egypt. If it weren’t for the brave actions of one Egyptian vet who alerted Animals Australia, this cruelty may have gone completely unchallenged.

Tragically this systemic abuse occurred under the close watch of Australia’s live export industry — inside the ‘closed-loop’ facilities of Sokhna and Ismailia. These two locations represent the entire Egyptian live export supply chain and has been lauded by industry as ‘state of the art’. But when Animals Australia revealed that we had obtained footage from inside these facilities, the industry immediately and loudly announced a temporary trade suspension. Yet just days later, live exporters are already making moves to re-open the live export trade to Egypt — and send more animals to be killed in these same abattoirs. We cannot let this happen.

Animals shouldn’t have to pay the price for the fact that the live export trade cannot be trusted to protect them from extreme cruelty. Please take urgent action to demand that animals never again be sent to these cruel destinations, and tell our political leaders to end the cruelty of live export, forever.

What is STOP VIVISECTION

Article 13 of the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union states “the Union and the Member States shall, since animals are sentient beings, pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals”. The official acknowledgement, referred to therein, carries over the moral obligation to respect the fundamental rights of animals: the protection of those rights must be recognized as a European Union priority and must be guaranteed through the medium of a coherent legal framework at European level. Imposing pain and suffering to sentient and defenceless beings, animal experimentation – or vivisection – is, without a shadow of a doubt, to be considered as an intolerable practice.

Ethical reasons – shared, inter alia, by 86% of European citizens, as indicated in a 2006 Eurobarometer survey – are supported by scientists, claiming a lack of scientific validity in using “animal models” for assessing human health issues; indeed, any statistics prove the efficiency and the reliability of the model referred to therein.
Animal experimentation can therefore be considered as:

a danger for human health and the environment;

a brake on development of new methods in biomedical research, based on the most recent scientific achievements;

an obstacle to tap into much more reliable, exhaustive, cheaper and faster responses, provided by new technologies expressly conceived for humans.

In consideration of the above premises, we, the undersigned European citizens, urge the European Commission to abrogate the directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.
We therefore call upon the European Commission to present a new proposal geared to doing away with animal experimentation, by the compulsory use – in biomedical and toxicological research – of data specifically conceived for humans and not for animals.

Why STOP VIVISECTION

The initiative STOP VIVISECTION was born following vibrant and numerous European citizens’ protests against the approval of Directive 2010/63/EU (said on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes). Such a directive did not trigger the abolition of animal experimentation as set forth in the European Treaties, whereby European Union policies must take into account animals’ needs and wellness, as sentient beings. Additionally, animal experimentation constitutes a serious danger for human health as animal testing do not have any predictive values for human being and impede development of new methods in biomedical research.

STOP VIVISECTION in progress

From 1st April 2012, thanks to Citizens’ Initiative, European citizens – with 1 million signatures – can take part in legislative decision making process of the European Union.
By the means of such a new instrument, the European Commission is compelled to analyse citizens’ requests within three months after the deposit of the signatures. The European Commission is therefore in charge to organise a public hearing of the steering committee and subsequently release a communication, explaining how it intends to act.
