Romania: **INTERNATIONAL Short Mails Required Please Urgently** – The Mayor in the city of Iasi (Romanian’s 2nd largest city after Bucharest) who up until now has been committed towards CNR has started to bow to the concerns of a few narrow-minded individuals who want the dogs off the streets ‘now’ no matter how it’s done!! – Killing could start anytime. Please Help and Take INTERNATIONAL Action to Stop.

Chrissy at Romania Animal Aid here in the Uk has asked for some help – Urgently.

Please do what you can to write regarding this situation.  The link provides more information and e mail details of persons to contact.

Please try to act urgently about this – as Chrissy says:

“The city shelter simply does not have the capacity to take them all in given the size of Iasi and so within days will be totally over-whelmed.  From there the killings will no doubt start!”

Thanks – SAV and Chrissy.

PLEASE CROSSPOST.  PLEASE CROSSPOST.

http://actionalertiasimayor.blogspot.com/2011/06/iasi-action-alert-politely-urge-mayor.html?spref=fb

Essentially the Mayor in the city of Iasi (Romanian’s 2nd largest city after Bucharest) who up until now has been committed towards CNR programs and has been very receptive to our efforts to ‘top’ this up by funding 50 spays per month (my own charity RAA and the American charity RAR co-sponsor this), has started to bow to the concerns of a few narrow-minded individuals who want the dogs off the streets ‘now’ no matter how it’s done!!

Given his position and with the politics of the situation ever mindful (i.e. he wants to appease his voters) he has now ordered the round up of as many strays as possible to be taken to the city shelter.  The city shelter simply does not have the capacity to take them all in given the size of Iasi and so within days will be totally over-whelmed.  From there the killings will no doubt start!

This Mayor has been very cooperative until now and we need people to politely urge him to continue down the path of CNR as this is the only way to effectively and humanely manage the problem in the long-term.

Residents of Iasi especially are being asked to email/call the mayor and our coordinator in the city (Lelia) is hoping to meet the press at the city shelter tomorrow to highlight the situation further but if people across Europe could for now urgently email those listed on the link appealing to them not to be persuaded away from CNR we’d be very very grateful.

IASI ACTION ALERT –

WE HAVE TO GET THE MAYOR BACK ONTO OUR SIDE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

***IASI ACTION ALERT***

POLITELY URGE THE MAYOR NOT TO DESTROY THE GOOD WORK HE HAS DONE IN HIS MUNICIPALITY BY DISCONTINUING THE CATCH,NEUTER & RELEASE PROGRAMMES

Today it has been learnt that because of a few complaints by misinformed and biggoted people within his community that the Mayor of Iasi Mr Ghe Nichita, is not only going to discontinue working with NGO’s such as Romania Animal Aid and Romanian Action but has already started to allow neuterd and spayed dogs to be dragged into the local shelter. Also that he is because of a few backward thinking local people is considering euthanising the strays in Iasi including those on the streets currently and also in the city shelter.

Now is the time that we all need to be contacting the mayor . The main points I have highlighted in bold, please do write your own correspondence around these points, but also add your own. Remember, with this guy, be very polite and applaud his efforts and sucess in the past with the catch neuter and release programmes he committed himself and his city to.

This guy is not yet our enemy, please dont make him one Polite, firm and commend him for his efforts so far, but remind him of the horrific mistakes made in the past before he committed himself and his city to the catch, neuter and release programmes.

Strongly urging him to stay committed to his spay/neuter and return efforts, this is the only proven long-term solution to effectively manage the over-population problem.  Every expert in the subject of stray dog management adheres to this, and it was surely because of his intelligence and forward thinking in understanding this that he committed his municipality to such programmes.

Remind him that a rushed decision based upon a handful of backward thinking individuals could potentially be a landmine of problems in the future. Not only in regards to his and his provinces public image locally and nationally, but also on an international level.

Remind him what affect the Mayor of Botosani had on Romanias public and international image when he made a similar decision last month, ask him why he would even think of making again the mistakes of the past and cave in to a few uneducated and biased inidviduals who know no different. If he was to start euthanising the shelter and street dogs, this would not only be inhumane but would reflect extremely badly on his city in the eyes of the majority of his citizens and also the International community in general.

Email address and contacts, we need to act now, this is urgent:

gheorghe.nichita@primaria-iasi.ro ; dirtehnic@primaria-iasi.ro ; ion.apostol@salubris.ro ; office@salubris.ro

Telephone Numbers:
The Mayor – 0040723399887
Director of Salubris (dogpound) – 0040729292809

If you live in Romania, especially in Iasi, the mayor really needs to hear from you, he needs to hear the majority of citizens in his city are against euthanasia and support the catch ,neuter and release programmes instead.

Uk: ‘Cheap Meat, MRSA and Deadly Greed’ by Johann Hari.

Cheap Meat, MRSA and Deadly Greed

If they aren’t stopped soon, the WHO warns we are facing a ‘doomsday scenario of a world without antibiotics’

by Johann Hari

Here is a news story that could determine whether you live or die. Many of the world’s scientists are warning that one of the mightiest weapons doctors have against sickness is being rendered useless – so a few people can get richer, for a while. If they aren’t stopped soon, the World Health Organization warns we are facing “a doomsday scenario of a world without antibiotics”. It will be a world where transplant surgery is impossible. It will be a world where a simple appendix operation will be as routinely lethal as it was in 1927, before the discovery of penicillin. It will be a world where pneumonia and TB and gonorrhea are far harder to deal with, and claim many more of us. But it’s a world that you and I don’t have to see – if we act on this warning now.

As the scientists I’ve interviewed explain it, antibiotics do something simple. They kill, slow down or stall the growth of bacteria. They were one of the great advances of the 20th century, and they have saved millions of us. But they inherently contain a problem – one that was known about from very early on. They start an arms race. Use an antibiotic against bacteria, and it kills most of it – but it can also prompt the bacteria to evolve a tougher, stronger, meaner strain that can fight back. The bacteria is constantly mutating and dividing. The stronger the antibiotic, the stronger some bacteria will become to survive. It’s Darwin dancing at super-speed.

So the more we use antibiotics, the more we lose them. It’s a battle played out on human bodies and in human wounds, with sky-high stakes. In many developed countries today, MRSA kills more people than AIDS. The obvious conclusion, then, is that we should use antibiotics sparingly, and only when they are really needed to treat the sick. But in one crucial area we are doing the exact opposite – for the sake of a few people’s profits.

In the United States, Latin America, and Asia, animals being farmed for meat and milk are being automatically given antibiotics in their food all day – irrespective of whether they are healthy or sick. It’s like slathering your child’s Cornflakes with antibiotics, all year round. Some 80 per cent of all antibiotics in the US go straight into farm animals. This speeds up the race massively. It’s like taking bacteria to the gym and giving them a constant work-out – and then unleashing them on the rest of us.

You can see how this process makes bacteria stronger and tougher – and at work on humans – in a startling study by Professor Barry Levy in the New England Journal of Medicine. His team went to a chicken farm where antibiotics had not been used before, and started to put the antibiotic tetracycline into their feed. Before the start of the experiment, there was no tetracycline-resistant bacteria on the farm. Within two weeks, 90 per cent of the chickens were excreting tetracycline-resistant organisms. Even more strikingly, half of all the humans living on the farm were by then excreting tetracycline-resistant bacteria too.

This process partially explains the evolution and spread of many superbugs. Only a fortnight ago, a new strain of MRSA was found in British milk that could be transmitted to human beings. To some degree this arms race is an inevitable part of nature – but our factory farms are massively artificially accelerating it. They are bringing the day when antibiotics won’t work much closer.

Why? Why would factory farms automatically feed antibiotics to healthy animals, given the obvious risk? If you cram animals together, give them little room to move, and make them grow and produce far beyond the level they would in natural circumstances, they will routinely get ill – and they do. It is cheaper for their owners to simply automatically and pre-emptively drug them all, than to try to treat their illness individually, or to create an environment where sickness is not standard.

The animals in these factory farms can become reservoirs of stronger superbugs. Sometimes it spreads to us through contamination of raw meat, but more often it filters out through workers who have contact with the animals. Dutch pig farmers are 760 times more likely to be carrying pig-MRSA than the rest of the population. This story ends eventually with the death of antibiotics – and routine operations becoming deadly once more.

We always knew factory farming was a scar on our conscience, but it turns out it is also an urgent threat to our health. Of course, factory farming is not the only source of growing antibiotic resistance. Doctors have been over-prescribing them, and patients have too often not been taking their full course, enabling tougher bacteria to survive and thrive. But this is the most egregious cause.

A few years ago, it looked like the European Union had taken the lead, by banning the routine use of some types of antibiotics simply to promote the growth of animals. But research published this week by the Soil Association suggests farmers are sidestepping the real issue. The prescription of modern cephalosporins, the antibiotics which are most widely believed to promote stronger variants of MRSA in animals and humans – has quadrupled in the past decade in Britain. Why? They are advertised to farmers, who are under greater pressure than ever to get more and more out of their herds because supermarkets have ratcheted up the pressure for quick profit. Decent small farmers who want to resist these trends find themselves out of business.

The former chief medical officer Liam Donaldson says this over-prescription is so dangerous to us all it should be banned. Yet David Cameron’s Government ignored the official recommendation from its own veterinary advisers to take even the much milder step of banning the advertising of antibiotics to farmers.

It might seem strange that governments all over the world are taking such a gamble with public health, in the face of the best scientific advice. But Big Agriculture has armies of lobbyists and open checkbooks, while the people trying to protect the public have only the facts and reason and truth on their side. The squandering of life-saving antibiotics is one example of a bigger trend hijacking global politics. Small groups of rich people, determined to maximize profits, are buying or bamboozling politicians into serving their interests and into ignoring the interests of the vast majority of the population. This is the trend that is making it so hard to (say) re-regulate the banks to prevent another global crash, or prevent the unraveling of the climate.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The majority of the population can organize and shout louder than these self-interested juntas of profit. There are inspiring examples. In Lincolnshire, there were plans to import the first US-style mega-farm into this country by a group of tycoons who claimed their cows “do not belong in fields”. But public pressure forced the Environment Agency to investigate, and the plans to be abandoned. Fighting back on issues like this works – and we need to step it up.

Otherwise, the history books – written by people more vulnerable to bacteria than you and I have ever been – will record something startling. Our demand for cheap meat turned us, in turn, into cheap meat.

Subject: {FIAPO} Please protest last night’s blood bath in Kakinada

Dear friends,

We at ABC India have been contacted by eyewitnesses to a scene of carnage in

Kakinada last night. About 150-200 dogs were killed with strychnine

poisoning by rogue elements allegedly connected to the municipal corporation

and some MLAs. Please see video at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNa2yhC-gUw

The Animal Welfare Board of India was also contacted, and they have sent a

letter of protest to the authorities at Kakinada.

ABC India condemns in the strongest possible terms the illegal killing of

street dogs. Killing of dogs with poison is not only illegal in India, it is

unspeakably cruel. Furthermore, the killing of dog is absolutely

CONTRA-INDICATED, especially at a time of rabies outbreak. The presence of

vaccinated dogs is actually one of the best defenses against rabies in a

rabies-endemic area.

It is crucial at this time to remind all localities NOT to engage in

killing, catching and shifting, or dumping dogs. It has been established

that any destabilization of resident dog populations by killing or catching

and relocating dogs actually increases the risk of dog bites and the risk of

the transmission of rabies. The reason is that if you move dogs out of a

particular area, more dogs will ALWAYS migrate into that area, and very

quickly. Because they are new to the area and unsettled, they will fight

among themselves for dominance of the turf.

These fearful, unsettled dogs

are much more likely to bite local residents than dogs who have lived in the

area for some time, and people are much more likely to get bitten in the

crossfire as these dogs battle between themselves for dominance. The

practice of killing dogs puts people at higher risk of death from rabies and

as such can be considered at best criminally negligent. The persons

responsible for the killings, as well as for the coercion of children to

participate in the killings (as per eye witness accounts), must be charged

and prosecuted under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals Act.

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually the presence of vaccinated,

healthy dogs that helps to keep rabies out. Sterilized, vaccinated, and left

to live in peace in their areas, these dogs are our partners in the fight

against rabies. Because they are territorial, they will not let new,

unfamiliar, unvaccinated dogs into their areas who might be potential

carriers of rabies. It is crucial to understand that a stable population of

sterilized, vaccinated dogs is one of the best defenses against rabies in a

rabies-endemic area. Accordingly, we recommend that a directive be issued to

all municipalities, district collectors and panchayats that dogs are not to be

killed, but rather vaccinated and sterilized. Any action that destabilizes

local dog populations increases the risk of dog bite and the transmission of

rabies and is to be avoided for that reason. Anyone found killing dogs must

be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, for by doing so not only are

they breaking the law; they are also putting the lives of local residents at

risk.

We urge you to please write urgent letters protesting last night’s dog

killings to the District Collector of Kakinada, Mr. M. Ravi Chandra, who is

also President of the Kakinada SPCA. His email id is collector_egd@ap.gov.in.

SAMPLE LETTER

Reference: Proposed mass slaughter of dogs in Brasov

To whom it may concern

Please note I have chosen to send you this generic correspondence as it wholly echoes my opinion and beliefs in this matter and is to be treated in the same regard as if I had written the entirety of this correspondence personally.

It has been learnt today through the international network that inBrasovit is being planned to kill/massacre all strays within that area.

May I remind you that if this mass slaughter goes ahead that the government workers who represent the Romanian Government in that area are in direct violation of European Animal Welfare laws, and by breeching such agreements the Romanian Government themselves are acting criminally, and the European citizens will be petitioning the European parliament demanding for a review of Romania’s status within the EU and an investigation into monies received by your government by that parliament.

You simply cannot sweep away these proposed actions as you have tried with the slaughter of 220 dogs in anotherRomaniaProvinceearlier this week on 11th May. To mass slaughter on this scale is not only putting your own Government and country under scrutiny but also the veterinary services in your country.

Under no circumstances is this horrific proposal to go ahead, the European and International community is already rising up against you, these types of actions will only weaken your position within the European and International community and media, and in-turn the parliaments and Governments that represent the communities within them.

You are forcing your hand to an extent where the people who these governments and parliaments represent will demand you be removed as an EU member and along with this the Billions of Euros your country claims and is given each year by those same Governments.

Yours,

Your name, town, country

SAMPLE LETTER

SUBJECT : Please STOP the round-up and the slaughter of the wild horses in the Danube Delta

Dear officials.

We just found out with stupor, about the decision of local authorities in the Galati county,  to start the round up and the SLAUGHTER of the wild horses who live in the renowned natural Park The Letea Forest, th the Danube Della.

We are appalled by these kind of decisions, to slaughter animals, taken recently by Romanian authorities…it is beyond our understanding WHY   other, more civilized and humane measures are never taken in consideration by Romanian Authorities when it come the over population of animals, of any kind.

It is very obvious that Romanian authorities are prone to KILL animals, rather than develop and implement programs which will help solve these situations in a civilized and humane manner as expected from a country in the EU in the 21st century.

We are aware of the treasure these animals represent , as described in the videos linked bellow:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqm4El-TPwg&feature=related We kindly ask the Romanian Authorities to immediately reverse their decision and to consult with International Animal welfare organizations, Romanian Animal Protection Organizations, specialists , and to find another solution to let these animals live in peace in their natural habitat. We are determined to expose the way Romanian treats animals, all over the world, and we are also determined to boycott Romania, because such barbaric treatment of animals is unacceptable in the civilized world.

In the last couple of months, Romania took front stage , around the world, with the HORRIBLE treatment of stray dogs…who Romania continues to slaughter…now, Romania decided to also KILL all WILD HORSES…

Please, dear Romanian officials, look at these videos…and think again…all you do lately is to DESTROY…

Please read the information given by Mr. Stefan  Raileanu about the wild horses from the Danuve Delta :”Caii semisalbatici sunt prezenti in ntregul areal al Deltei, iar in ultimii ani au devenit o problema destul de mare si un subiect de controversa, din cauza inmultirii lor. In Letea, caii sunt o problema pentru padure, zona protejata de stat, intrucat rod scoartele copacilor, ceea ce duce apoi la uscarea lor. Unele estimari indica in jur de 2500 de cai in areal. Altele – in jur de 1000. Alti cai ar avea dificultati in a supravietui in aceste parti.

It is beyond our understanding how the decision to KILL these animals has been taken…

More than 200 dogs massacred at Botosani Romania animal shelter (VIDEO)

  • May 13th, 2011 12:03 pm ET

On Tuesday, over 200 dogs were killed at a public shelter at the Botosani, Romania animal shelter by the order of the mayor. Supposedly, an overnight decision was made based on fear of an epidemic at the shelter because some of the dogs in the shelter were sick. Volunteers discovered the dogs the next this morning– in plastic bags with traces of blood everywhere. The dogs were not euthanatized by injection but slaughtered.  The volunteers were in shock and tried to save the few remaining puppies that were alive, but were allegedly assaulted and offended by the guards.

Public shelters in Romania do not have a quarantine zone and only the NGOs feed the dogs and offer medical services. The dogs are typically kept in improper conditions because the final goal is for them to die. Euthanasia is illegal in Romania unless the dogs are sick.

Video of this tragedy appeared on the news in Romania and can be seen by clicking on the video link to the left.  A Romanian news article gives an account of the event according to one of the volunteers that found the deceased dogs (roughly translated):

“It’s hard to describe in words what I see here. Hundreds of dogs dead, killed in an hour! We tried to get some puppies in a legal manner but it was postponed and all were empty promises and ultimately saw that they wanted to kill them all. Yesterday, ADOR members came and fed the dogs on the basis of an agreement with the City. The animals were healthy. Indeed there were some sick puppies, but not rabies, as they sy.. Yesterday there were 230 dogs, we report. Today I found several near the paddocks and I took them with us. We had  raised money to pull dogs for adoption, they knew of it but it proved to be in vain. We filed a criminal complaint, we do not know what will happen… we’ll see, “said Eugen Nistor, ADOR Member of Botosani.

The NGO from Botosani that has been helping this animals in the shelter is ADOR. Their mission includes the following:

  • Partnership with City Hall to reduce the number of dogs from the streets of Botosani through human and civilized means
  • Campaign to collect food for shelter dogs from Botosani
  • Campaign to educate the population and to sterilize stray animals (sterilizations performed by veterinarians and volunteers using foundation funds)
  • Campaign to educate people about animal feces being picked up on public space
  • Campaign to inform the population about the legal provisions regarding abandonment of animals and animal torture
  • Organizing an adoption fair for stray dogs and cats
  • Organizing cultural performances to raise funds for helping the dogs in shelters

Photos from a Botosani march in silence for the dogs killed in shelter can be found in the slideshow link to the left and on the ADOR Facebook page.  More photos and video from the march can be seen at this Romanian website as well as here.

MASSACRE OF DOGS IN a public shelter in BOTOSANI ROMANIA…Please send PROTEST LETTER

Focus: Animal Welfare
Action Request: Write E-Mail
Location: Romania

DEAR FRIENDS
It is obvious, that local authorities in Romania, are DETERMINED to EXTERMINATE the strays, with or without the blessing of a LAW….they now try all possible ways to KILL AS MANY dogs as possible…

Tuesday night ( May 10/11, 2011 ) they have KILLED all 200 dogs in the shelter of Botosani Romania…based on, most likely prefabricated information that an incurable disease has been discovered…(distemper)…The workers, attacked the media with bricks and a smell of alcohol surrounded them, it is said that they denied access to the POLICE !…it is very unlikely that these poor creatures have been ” humanely PTS ! Now, the Sanitary-Veterinary office from Botosani has discovered the …..”disease” and the Deputy- Mayor gave the order to kill the dogs…The Local Association, has been able to save 10 of them..

Please be so kind and sent the letter bellow. The ” euthanasia” took place over night. The veterinarian says that he PTS 200 dogs in 2 hours, with Inter-thoracic injection… well…you see, THEY, LOCAL AUTHORITIES, will find all kind of “explanation ” to KILL…please look at the photos, at the bottom of the note, you will see the dogs one day before their slaughter ! To whom it may concern,

I, as a human being and citizen of the world, can not find the right words to express my outrage about the massacre of strays at the city pound in Botosani, Romania.

It has become obvious already that local authorities in your country will do anything to slaughter as many strays as possible.

What has happened in your town is yet another example of how horrible the animals are treated in your country, and and there is no excuse for this barbarism.

It is obvious that the poor animals in the shelter of Botosani have been killed in barbaric ways, ( based on the media reports) and it is obvious that the employees of the shelter , by throwing bricks to the journalists, and by refusing even the Police the access in the premises, have displayed the REAL face of the barbaric treatment of animals.
Although the veterinarian says that HE euthanized 200 dogs, it is very strange that this procedure has been done over night, and that by 6 am, the next day all corpses were already ready to be sent to incineration at PROTAN…
http://www.stiri.botosani.ro/stire/28842/Performanta+incredibila+a+medicului+veterinar%3A+peste+200+de+caini+eutanasiati+in+2+ore!.html

I shall boycott Romania until the animals will be treated properly and until Romania will implement the only successful program to reduce strays population, recommended by the WHO, Capture/Castrate/RETURN….and will implement and APPLY real laws for the protection of animals…
Indeed, Romania is the land of death for the animals…
I try to understand WHY the animals have been killed OVER NIGHT…? And why the local association DID NOT KNOW about the distemper epidemic in the shelter,…and why the dogs where OK one day before…

I still hope that a HONEST, THOROUGH and OPEN investigation will take place and ALL those responsible for this hideous crime against innocent animals, will be punished.

Thank you very much for your attention ,

We need European support to put pressure on this people for them to stop killing! 220 dogs were massacred last night in Botosani (Romania) at the order of the mayor Yesterday night over 200 dogs from Botosani (ROMANIA) public shelter were killed at the order of the mayor who based his overnight decision on the fact that an epidemic of Carre disease will start – because of the fact that some of the dogs in the shelter were sick.

The dogs were discovered this morning by the volunteers that feed them every day – in plastic bags with traces of blood everywhere. The dogs were not euthanised by injection but slaughtered. PROTEST TO AIR FRANCE FOR TRANSPORTING LABORATORY ANIMALS!!!!

Air France is the “Official Airline” of the world famous Cannes Film Festival in France :

http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/about/officialPartners.html

They are also the number one transporter of laboratory animals, transporting tens of thousands of animals around the world for the vivisection industry each year, and for this reason Air France-KLM is the target of an international campaign: http://www.airsouffrance.fr/en

Please contact the organisers of the Cannes Film Festival to inform them of Air France’s participation in the vivisection industry and to voice your disappointment in their choice of “Official Partners”, (for convenience all the provided emails are in one group below): http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/about/contactUs.html

*** SAMPLE LETTER **; (PLEASE EDIT FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT):

For the attention of the Cannes Film Festival;

I have been deeply saddened to learn that Air France is an “Official Partner” in your organisation, and that Air France has even be described as the “Official Airline of the Cannes Film Festival”.

I’m sure you will not be aware but Air France is the number one transporter of laboratory animals; often transporting dogs, cats, monkeys and other animals destined for research laboratories in the cargo holds of their passenger planes, alongside their passenger’s luggage!

Air France is the only passenger airline transporting monkeys from Mauritius, transporting thousands each year, yet there have been numerous investigations into the Mauritian primate trade and each time shocking animal cruelty has been uncovered: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vAESsMkAXs

The majority of airlines have banned the transport of laboratory animals, often following objections from their passengers, and Air France is one of the few passenger airlines to to be involved in this trade. Many scientists now reject the efficacity of animals in scientific research and the weight of evidence suggests that animal research is ineffective in predicting results in human beings: http://www.safermedicines.org/

I ask that you raise my concerns with your “Official Partner” and that you reconsider your own position in the knowledge of what they are complicit in. I imagine many of your guests wouldn’t approve of the mistreatment of animals and therefore I urge you to consider their opinions when deciding whether to make Air France an “Official Partner” next year.

Sincerely,

**** YOUR NAME  and NATIONALITY ****
