Dear All,
One and a half years have gone by since Romania began to kill its dogs in massive numbers. Even during the time period when the methods of the application of the law were suspended, the dogs continued to be killed in some cities, especially Bucharest. The Service for the Management of Stray Dogs in Bucharest, ASPA, periodically organizes press conferences where they brag about the number of dogs that have been killed, as if this was some glorious action that brings great merit. In some areas of Romania the municipalities mention the topic of stray dogs only in the context of the number of dogs killed.
The situation in Romania puts us under immense pressure and keeps piling up more and more problems. It’s a race against time, and it was almost impossible for me to provide you with updates. But a wonderful event happened: in many cities all over the world a huge action took place on 16th of May: the fourth international PROTEST against dog killing in Romania. Under the banner of “YES WE CARE”, in about 25 cities in Germany, Austria, Italy, UK … (and of course, in some cities in Romania as well) people gathered to voice their strong displeasure.
I want to thank all the wonderful people in many countries who organised and participated in protests against the animal cruelties from Romania, some having to drive hundreds of kilometres, and to all of you who tirelessly help the animals in Romania by all of your actions!

Die massenhafte Tötung der Hunde in Rumänien spielt sich jetzt schon seit anderthalb Jahren ab. Sogar während der Zeit, als die methodische Ausführungweise der Gesetze zeitweilig aufgeschoben wurde, werden die Hunde weiterhin ermordet, besonders in Bucharest. Das Amt für die Verwaltung der Streunerhunde (ASPA) organisiert immer wieder Presse-Konferenzen, wo sie damit prahlen, wieviele Hunde schon getötet wurden, als ob das etwas wäre, worauf sie stolz sein könnten. In manchen Gegenden von Rumänien werden Streunerhunde nur im Zusammenhang mit der Anzahl von ermordeten Tieren erwähnt.
Die Situation in Rumänien übt einen intensiven Druck auf uns aus, und bombadiert uns mit mehr und mehr Problemen. Es gibt nie genug Zeit, und deswegen war es fast unmöglich für mich, euch auf dem Laufenden zu halten. Und dann passierte ein ganz großartiges Ereignis: in vielen Städten auf der ganzen Welt fand eine Riesen-Aktion statt am 16. Mai: der 4. internationale PROTEST gegen die Tötung der Struenerhunde in Rumänien. Unter dem Motto von “YES WE CARE” (JA, WIR SORGEN UNS), kamen Menschen in über 25 Städten in Deutschland, Österreich, Italien, England… (und natürlich auch in einigen Städten in Rumänien) zusammen, um gegen die Tierquälerei zu protestieren.
Ich möchte all den wunderbaren Menschen in so vielen verschiedenen Ländern danken, die Demonstrationen gegen die Misshandlung von Tieren in Rumänien organisierten und daran teilnamen, manche mußten hunderte von Kilometern fahren, und euch allen, die ihr so unermüdlich mit all euren Aktionen den Tieren von Rumänien helft!

Here is just one typical story;
Eli was kept in a city pound on a very short chain – The chain was so short that she couldn’t reach the dog house.
She was rescued, taken to safety and to the vet for a full assessment. It took her some time to recover, but NOW she is a happy and healthy girl. Under the loving care of volunteers, Eli has blossomed in a true golden retriever beauty and she is as lovable as a Goldens can be.

The shelter was opened on 28/01/2003 during the time when Subotica legally permitted euthanasia of dogs and on Fridays people could bring their dogs to be euthanized for free.
This is the first no-kill shelter in Serbia.
The shelter covers the area of 12000m2 + an additional land next to the shelter (approx. 3600 m2) that still isn’t fenced nor used.
Currently in the shelter there are more than 500 dogs.
Around 70% of the dogs are old (some have been in the shelter since 2003/2004).
There are only 2-4 people taking care of the shelter and its dogs.
The shelter is funded exclusively by donations, which are not regular or reliable.
The shelter requires building materials, cleaning supplies, food (granules and canned food, salami, bread, etc), blankets, fleas/ticks products and money to cover the vet costs, bills, etc.

Last Chance for Animals Reveals New Investigation
LCA announces a groundbreaking investigation revealing extreme brutality at the largest rabbit slaughterhouse in the United States: The Pel-Freez processing plant in Rogers, Arkansas.
Until now, the cruelty of the rabbit meat industry has been kept hidden from the public – but with the truth finally revealed, it’s time to end the suffering.
Despite using the “humanely raised” label, Pel-Freez tortures rabbits mercilessly until their dying breath. This is what our investigator caught on tape:

A worker called the “killer” strikes the rabbits’ foreheads with the back edge of a knife to knock them unconscious. This often does not work.

Next, the killer breaks the rabbits’ legs (the bone often visibly protrudes from the skin), and hangs them upside-down from a hook.

The killer then beheads the rabbits. This is not always swift – when the blade grows dull, it takes time to saw from the back of the neck to the front.

Still-conscious rabbits scream loudly throughout the entire process, sometimes until the knife slices through their vocal cords. Rabbits are normally silent animals because in the wild, sound draws predators. But extreme situations like this make them cry out in pain.

This is animal cruelty, plain and simple; but prosecutors fail to see it that way. LCA has submitted a criminal complaint to the Benton County Prosecutors Office detailing 323 instances where conscious rabbits endured intentional infliction of major physical trauma.
Still, they refuse to press charges.
That’s why it’s crucial that you sign the petition right now to have criminal charges pressed against Pel-Freez, so that no more rabbits are forced to endure this suffering.

Dear Mark,
– a male and female – from a remote island just north of Halong Bay, Vietnam on Tuesday, May 5.
The rescue from Ba Mun Island will be the first time our team has performed a rescue at sea, and without a doubt it will be our most challenging yet.
We’ve rescued over 120 bears in Vietnam, but have never faced a challenge like this one. The remote location, the potential dangers of travelling at sea, a lack of developed facilities and the potential poor health of the bears will make this a huge challenge.
The male bear is reported to be weak, with restricted movement, and clear scarring and an open wound on his back.
This rescue will be the first of many after the Quang Ninh authorities’ recent decision to transfer all 38 captive moon bears in the province to our rescue centre – making the province bear bile farm free. These bears include the last of the bears still trapped on bile farms at Halong Bay.
We can’t wait to get these two bears home to the care they so urgently need.

But what makes it horrifying, is the very inhuman agonizing method of killing through which the dogs are forcefully injected with Acid, so it brings them a very painful lynching death and the animal endures much suffering before its death; but the contractors don’t pay any attention to the animal’s agony since they just care about the money and the cheapest way to get rid of those Poor animals and earn more money.

Anas reported, that the prophet Muhammed said: “No muslim will plant a tree or saw the seed of a plant, on which birds, people and animals likewise can feed, without getting the reward of sadaqa from Allah …” (bu). [sun:2562]
The representatives of the civilized world community demand you live up to your own culture and IMMEDIATELY STOP THIS UNNECCESARY BARBARIC TORTUROUS ACID INJECITON EXTERMINATION OF THE STRAY DOGS IN THE SHIRAZ COMMUNITY.

22/4/15 – Serbian situation update.
The situation regarding the ‘new kill’ proposals being put forward by the Serbian government, which they have been hoping to introduce during May; is obviously changing and updating on an almost daily basis.
Today (22/4), Mark made a telephone conversation to the EU Enlargement Commission (one of many over the past few months) in Brussels to ask when, if ever, he will be getting a written response to his letter of 22nd February 2015. Read the original letter via this ref:
Mark was in conversation with the Commission Member of Cabinet, Mr. Kyriacos Charalambous, who is partly responsible for Serbian EU membership.
were, in their opinion, basically the same thing; and as such needed just one response from them.
This response from Commissioner Hahn was thus sent directly to Keith Taylor MEP, and titled ‘Honorable Member’; addressed only to Keith himself and nobody else, the content of which you can see directly below.
We would always argue that in no way were the letters of Keith and Mark identical, and we still feel that each letter should have been acted on and responded to as individual issues by the EU Commission. Commissioner Hahn and the Enlargement Commission for example; did not even touch on the many animal fighting video links which were provided in Mark’s letter and Mark’s letter only. Video evidence that the Serbian government and police should have acted on years or months ago – and here we are now with the EU Commission further supporting the Serbian government with their utter ignorance and disrespect of what the videos actually show. The Commission should run the issues, not give in and do what the Serbian government does and does not want to do.
Just for the record, as this link is being sent back to the EU Head of Cabinet; we repeat a few of the video links which were supplied ONLY in Mark’s original letter; not that of Keith Taylors.
People involved in this animal abuse can be clearly seen in the videos; along with the name of the person who posted them onto Youtube in the first place – Jovica Vidovic.
So why has no action been taken by the Serbian government and police to enforce ‘the rule of law’ we ask ? – something the EU Commission seems unable to pick up on; and also, why are the EU Enlargement Commission waffling on with excuses to us that they have fully responded about things in the reply to Keith Taylor, when the actual reality is that the issues of the videos raised by Mark specifically do not even get a hearing at the EU Commission !!
So we are now left in the situation where the EU Enlargement Commission have failed to respond directly back to Mark regarding his letter to them of 22nd of February 2015. In the telephone conversation on 22/4, Mark did point out to the Member of Cabinet that a fundamental requirement of any EU accession state is ensuring that any new state seeking EU membership should be fully enforcing ‘the rule of law’ within its own country – and this should be proven to the EU. So we ask again, where is the action being taken by either serbia or the EU Commission regarding the videos above ?
Mark also pointed out to the Commission that despite rulings from the Serbian Constitutional Court in 2005 saying that stray animals must not be killed; but instead controlled by other means, https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2010/01/25/serbia-constitutional-court-of-serbia-says-that-the-killing-of-stray-dogs-and-cats-in-serbia-is-forbidden-from-02102005/ the Serbian government has ignored the rulings of its own national Constitutional Court and continued to round up and kill stray animals for at least the last 10 years.
In the opinion of SAV and many others, it was made clear by Mark today (22/4) to the EU Commission that the Serbian government has been ignoring the requirements of the Serbian Constitutional Court for the past 10 years is not enforcing the rule of law within Serbia.
Mark was ‘verbally assured’ by the EU member of Cabinet, that the EU is working hard to ensure that the ‘rules of law’ are enforced throughout Serbia before it is given EU membership. Mark pointed out that in his opinion and that of many others involved with animal welfare in Serbia, that these new proposals for ‘quicker killings’ of stray animals which are currently being presented by the Serbian government are simply a way of (as it has been said) “cleaning up the streets in order to Fast Track Serbia’s EU membership”. This was denied by the EU Commission when suggested to them.
Fed up with no action from the EU; Mark closed the conversation with the EU by informing them he had little faith in their current actions; asking them to ensure that the Serbian government did NOT continue with their new kill proposals for May 2015, and reminded the EU that we (and many other EU animal welfare groups) will be watching and reporting on every event which takes place for Serbian animals over the coming months.
If the Member of Cabinet at the EU did not get the message today that they need to act; and act positively and quickly in the next few weeks; then it has to be asked exactly what one has to do with the EU to simply get a message through to them !!
And then we wonder why so many people in the UK (for example) want to get out of the EU ! – with actions like theirs is it any wonder people want to move to an authority that does not continually drag its heels.
So, we have been busy behind the scenes. This is the latest of all the events but we will continue to keep you updated as always when we feel it is time to do so. And EU Commission; we are watching your actions (or lack of) very closely.
We dont want a ‘Romania 2’ when Serbia is allowed into the EU. Sort It Now.
