We made contact with Lucy here in London yesterday; and Lucy has sent us some great information about the work she is doing for the Pozega dogs.

Lucy has established a Facebook page called ‘Help the Pozega Dogs’ and the following are all links which we encourage you to view and help with.

About This group is created to help volunteers from Belgrade HumAnimal who rescue dogs from the Pozega horror shelter in Serbia. It is estimated over 7000 dogs have already been killed there and it is well known the animals are tortured and literally starved – we are trying to save as many as possible by reserving them vetting them/placing them in private kennels and finding them fosters or adopters.

We will raise funds, build awareness and assist with lobbying the government.

This infamous torture dog pound ironically called “Our Home”:

– is catching dogs from 7 cities in Serbia
– after a few weeks dogs are killed with t61 injenction and no preparation
– or they are strangled or beaten!!!
– dogs are literally starved before they die
– most dogs can no longer walk
– and can barely lift their heads

Pups only couple of months old are curled up on the ground and do not react any more to the human voice.

It is well known that the shelter supervisor and the veterinarian torture the dogs. There are 20 criminal charges against the management of the pound, but they continue to catch and kill these poor animals.

– it is thought around 300-400 dogs are killed per month.
– Local Authorities pay 100 euros per dog to the pound!
– it means they earn around 400.000 euros for year

**  In the last 2 weeks 57 dogs have been saved by Belgrade group HumAnimal and we are now raising funds for 20 more!!!! (10 more this week/10 next) **

– many of those saved have a serious health problems, due to being saves and sterilisations performed by incompetent veterinarians.
– some are fighting for their lives
– 4 have very sadly died due to having been starved or distemper

PLEASE HELP IN WHATEVER WAY YOU CAN TO STOP THE HORROR!

HumAnimal has saved over 250 dogs from Pozega so far and also from other kill shelters and or where dogs are being killed but live in horrible conditions as Stara Pazova, Rakovica in Belgrade etc – approx 400 dogs rescued in total.

Over 250 dogs have been adopted in Italy, some in Germany and some in Serbia.

Sasha Pejčić is a rare kind of man who has been rescuing dogs in Nis, Serbia for years.

His animal shelter is absolutely breathtaking.   The dogs all follow Sasha around and it’s amazing to watch their interaction with each other. They all eat together peacefully, play, run and sleep together.

Most of the dogs have been taken off of the streets and nursed back to health (as well as spayed and neutered) and now live in a large pack in a disused riding school. At night they sleep in stables in groups of about 15.

sasha 3

However, Sasha is now facing a major crisis over how to feed these dogs.

The Austrian organization that was supporting him is no longer able to cope with all the financial needs and the dogs did not eat for two days recently. Sasha has now run out of food totally. His four workers who help with the feeding and cleaning have not been paid since the New Year and the rent hasn’t been paid for four months.

Well now (16/05) we have some brilliant news !

Have you heard the news?

Thanks to the amazing Harmony Fund supporters across the planet, 400 dogs living at this cage-free oasis in Serbia are now safe.

Last month, they couldn’t eat for two days due to a financial crisis that gripped the shelter, but with your donations, we sent the first $10,500 this week and another $12,000 will go over to Serbia in June. After that, we’ll be helping on an ongoing basis with a couple thousand dollars a month for the long term to buy food, veterinary care, electricity and worker’s wages to make sure that the dogs here never go hungry again.

The shelter’s founder Sasha does not speak any English, so the news was given to him by translator. It’s heartwarming to see this stoic man who has become so accustomed to suffering try to hold back his emotion as he receives word that the dogs will not go without food ever again.

At the very end of this video clip, Sasha has just a few simple words to express how he feels.

You can watch it here    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzaaNNeS6vg&feature=youtu.be

Be sure to stay in touch with us at www.HarmonyFund.org

Bless you all for making this dream come true – and also thanks to all from SAV.

How the Shelter Was Born

Over the years, Sasha has witnessed so much suffering amongst the Serbian dogs and it has affected him deeply. Ever since he can remember, he always felt sorry for little puppies and would always try and feed them whenever he saw them. It was in 2008 that he really started to notice that many of dogs he was trying to help were disappearing – what he realized was that the Nis pound was killing more and more dogs daily as a way of ‘managing’ the population.

Sasha would often notice that his friends, the street dogs he fed on regular basis, would suddenly go missing. They were being caught by the dog catchers and murdered (the methods used to ‘euthanize’ dogs are unspeakable).

One day, Sasha found four puppies near a very busy street and he moved them somewhere safer as he was so scared they would be killed and he began feeding them in that safer place. A few days later, he found another eight puppies on the way to feeding the first four. He bought them a couple of dog houses for shelter and came back every day to feed and water them. People noticed this and started to drop off more and more puppies. In no time, there were 70 of them. Sasha managed to finance all of this on his own as he was working full time. If he was ever short due to an illness of the pups or something similar, he’d turn to friends and family for help and they’d lend him the needed money for the treatment.

FAVORITEN

Sasha managed to find a disused riding school that he could rent and the owner agreed he could keep dogs there. A homeless man, Zoran, noticed him feeding the puppies and started to help. Since Sasha was working, he offered Zoran a part time job so that he could look after the weaker puppies while Sasha was at work.  Together, they started to help the really sick and injured dogs. Sasha would nurse them back to health and bring them to the ‘shelter’ Zoran and he had started building. When he first rented the disused riding school, it was overgrown and the roof of the stable was in a bad way. With the help of friends, family and a lot of hard work, Sasha and Zoran transformed it into the shelter that it is today.

Years later, Sasha is now responsible for more than 400 dogs who he has rescued. Several of them came in via a former humane organization who rescued dogs from the pound as they were being spayed but not stitched up properly after surgery before being put back on the street, which led to a terrible end for so many dogs. Some of the dogs have been left outside the gates, but Sasha is not actively rescuing more dogs now as he has reached full capacity. Sasha cannot manage on his own and he has some workers who come and help him (Zoran is one of them still).

As there are 400 dogs to be fed, the food bill is now very high. To start off with, Sasha could buy the food but as the numbers grew, he depended on donations from local abattoir and bakeries. This was a great solution for a while, but eventually they couldn’t keep up with the amount of food that Sasha needed for his ever-expanding pack.

To feed the dogs every day, Sasha needs between 100 and 120 kg worth of kibble. The cheapest kibble available in Serbia (dog food is a novelty, most people feed their dog stale bred dunked in their own leftovers) it is about Euro 16.4 ($21 US dollars) for a 20kg bag. The shelter mixes meat, dry food and donated bakery goods at a total of Euro 3,600 a month. A couple of years ago, he managed to find an organization in Austria who started to help him, but sadly this year they have not been able to cover all the costs and for the first time since Sasha has rescued his dogs, they have no food.

Here’s What’s Being Done to Help Feed the Dogs

While volunteers try to begin networking on Facebook to build a base of supporters to help with regular contributions, the Harmony Fund is offering to help raise immediate funds to feed the dogs as well as to pay the rent, the veterinary costs and the workers’ wages.

A Crisis Looming For Dogs

Rescued From The Illegal Dog Meat Trade…

Dear Friends and Supporters of Soi Dog,

Last month over 1,000 dogs were rescued during arrests of dog meat traders. Had these dogs not been rescued they would have been transported to Vietnam and faced a slow and terrible end.

While it is wonderful that the lives of these dogs (such as those pictured here) have been saved a considerable challenge lies ahead and this will only be overcome with your help.

The recent interceptions of dogs destined for the dog meat trade has seen over 1,000 dogs saved in March alone. The shelter at Nakhon Phanom is now bursting at the seams.

After pressure from Soi Dog, the Department of Livestock Development agreed not to send 500 dogs to the Livestock center at Thong Pha Phum which itself is hopelessly overcrowded and is in effect a dumping ground far removed from public scrutiny.

300 dogs have recently been sent to the Khemmarat Livestock center, a much more suitable facility, however it is also already overcrowded.

The Department of Livestock have no budget to care for the dogs and have requested Soi Dog to help build additional shelters at Buriram in central Thailand. It is a matter of urgency that the first of these shelters be completed by the end of this month as otherwise additional arrests cannot occur, no dogs will be rescued and instead the dogs will suffer a horrifying fate on the dinner plates of Hanoi.

The video below (which contains no upsetting footage) gives a good overview of the situation and I encourage you to watch it.

Buriram is an ideal location as it is situated well away from any houses and covers a vast area of woodland. Yesterday 738,815 Thai Baht (about 25,000 US dollars) was transferred for over 30 tons of food.  Soi Dog will continue to do all that can be done to stop the trade and save the dogs but expenses are currently outstripping donations and that cannot continue for long.

Each of the 9 shelters will cost approximately 1 million Thai Baht (34,000 US dollars) to build. Soi Dog has authorized funding for the first of the shelters and is working with the Department of Livestock towards completing the shelter. Please do not stand by and allow the dog traders to win!

Your support is needed now to help build the shelters so that more dogs can be saved. Your donation of $100/€75 will provide 4 square meters of shelter for rescued dogs, a generous donation of $200/€150 will provide 8 square meters.

Each shelter will be 1,500 square meters and 100% of all donations received will go directly to this vital project.

I cannot emphasize too strongly that this is an emergency situation! Although natural disasters such as the 2011 Bangkok floods tend to grab people’s attention the situation here is far more grave. Owing to the recent interception of over 1,000 dogs the situation at the shelters has indeed reached crisis proportions.

The more funds raised the more shelters that can be built and more dogs can be saved from the fate of the dog meat trade. Your support is urgently needed today!

Best wishes,

John Dalley

Serbia / England: International Efforts To Help ‘Jonza’ the Goat Living In Serbia.

Jonza

The end of last week saw several of us called into action to try and help a goat in Serbia.

His name is ‘Jonza / Jonzy’ and from the photos of him above and below, we are sure you will agree with us that he is a very handsome young lad !

He lives with Vesna and Slavica, and they contacted to ask if we can get some Vermiculite Homeopathic medicine for Jozna, as he has severe arthritis in his legs.  Vesna asked for this medicine specially as in the past and for many years, she worked in a homeopathic ambulance.  So Vesna knew exactly what would be good for Jozna and his leg problems, which we are informed are currently causing him lots of pain.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Vermiculite is not available as a homeopathic medicine in Serbia.

Jonza was rescued by Vesna and Slavica in 2007, and has been under their care ever since.

And so Friday morning (22/3) we jumped into action to try and help Jonza as quickly as we could.

First of all contact (myself) was made with Ainsworth homeopathic specialist in Marleybone, London.  I thought that when I explained to the man on the phone that I needed medicine to help a goat in Serbia with leg problems, the man would think I was some kind of nut and put the phone down.  Instead, he was very helpful and listened to what I asked. He then said ‘yes, ok’ and asked me if I required tablets or liquid for Jonza.

In the end, with the help of Jean and Linda here in the UK, and also by going back to Vesna and Slavica to get exact requirements, an order was made on 22/3.  Today, 25/3, Linda has informed me that she now has the medicine (sent in the post by Ainsworth’s) and that tonight it will be packaged up ready for shipment to Serbia tomorrow (26th).  Packages normally take about one week to arrive, so we are very hopeful that by the middle of next week, Jonza will have started his new medication, and more importantly, we see an improvement in his leg condition.

We will try and give more updates on Jonza as time moves on, but for now enjoy the pictures that we have from Vesna showing Jonza.

Get well very soon Jonza !! – from all the crew.

Regards –  Mark – SAV London.

SAV Comment

We have helped Danica and Felix to get some additional funding support for emergency work to be undertaken on the shelter.  This is obviously far from enough.

There must be some people somewhere in our supporter global network who know others who can help out here with a bigger set of donations; be they celebrities, tv and media persons (Oprah ?), sports personalities or even very rich ‘animal welfare’ organisations.

As you can see from the photos above and below, the situation has reached crisis pointOne cheque from just one celebrity would probably cover all the costs needed to get Felix shelter sorted and running properly again.

Is anyone reading this prepared to make contact with celebrities and others to try and get Felix shelter some help ?

Or are we going to see the place fall down, despite all our efforts, and all the cats made homeless once again ?

Over to you – please do what you can to try and support this very worthwhile cause.

Thank You.

Serious problems with a damaged shelter

We’ve been repairing the shelter since last spring, but in spite of our best efforts the repairs are far from being finished. Instead of replacing the entire roof of the main building (which would have been a very costly, but only permanent solution), we managed to install additional supports and strengthen the roof as much as we could. Had this winter been as snowy as the last one, the roof would’ve surely collapsed under the snow load. It must be replaced this year at any cost, as it can’t possibly endure another winter. Moreover, we didn’t even touch the roof of the auxiliary rooms in the backyard. The entire structure is worn out and some of the roof rafters and beams are cracked and half-rotten. The old roof tiles, partially covered in moss, are moving and sagging and with the melting snow and heavy rains, water has started making it’s way in. What would have happened had the precipitation been more abundant, I dare not imagine.

As to the auxiliary rooms themselves, they have originally been made of bricks and rammed earth. If we want to fix them permanently, special nets should be adhered to the inner walls and Bavalit applied afterwards. Bavalit is a kind of mortar, a mixture of hydraulic binders, mineral aggregates and additives. Then the new insulation layer can be added to the ceiling and we would have a nice and safe indoor enclosure. The only cat room in the front yard is in the worst shape, with a huge bump in the ceiling caused by moisture, and a number of cracks in the walls. If enough of the ceiling gets wet, it will become too heavy to support itself and will collapse on my unsuspecting cats! We have to fix it ASAP!

The outdoor enclosure is another matter. The perimeter of the whole yard and the roof should be enclosed with some fencing with a stronger, but finer mesh. The existing fence is too weak and is actually chain-link fencing with links that are too large to prevent little kittens and skinnier adults from escaping through the wire. Although there wasn’t as much snow this winter, the wire mesh dangerously sagged at one point, as it was already droopy after it barely help up through the last year’s winter. Another heavy snow load would have knocked it down. We’ve been lucky so far, but who can guarantee we will be equally lucky next winter? I won’t even mention that paved paths through the yard should also be made…

Another big problem is the outdoor fence. The posts had already started to deteriorate and crumble. They became wobbly last year, and this year’s snow and ice further degraded them and caused extensive additional damage. Not only that, the gates can’t close properly. These rotten posts will fall apart and cause the whole fence to fall down any day now. It’s not an exaggeration, it’s an inevitable reality and a dire emergency!

Please, help us! We’re overwhelmed and doing everything we can, but we just can’t do it without your help! The need is great, but no amount is too small. Thank you in advance for anything you may be able to provide!

For ten years Save the Dogs and other Animals has been calling for the closure of this facility, where about 150 dogs and an unknown number of cats live in terrible conditions, because of dirt, lack of food and veterinary care.
The kennel is located in the poorest district of the town, where it feeds the stray animals (dogs are not neutered) and sickens of mange and distemper owned and stray animals. The City of Cernavoda revoked the concession of land to Spike and asked our association to take care of animals evicted, which Save the Dogs has guaranteed even if we are going through a difficult financial period.

This petition aims to support the decision of the council, which was made in the interest of the animals and of all citizens.

Chiudiamo il canile lager Spike! Shut down Spike kennel in Cernavoda! Adapostul Spike trebuie inchis!

Adapostul Spike trebuie desfintat!

Shut down Spike kennel in Cernavoda!

For ten years, Save the Dogs and other Animals has been calling for the closure of this facility, where about 150 dogs and an unknown number of cats live in terrible conditions, because of dirt, lack of food and veterinary care.
