Serbia: August 2012 – Latest News and Photos From Cat Shelter ‘Felix’.

Dear Friends and Donors, 

First and foremost, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation and gratitude for your indispensable help! It’s been a busy and nerve wracking few months since the repairs have started, but how I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A lot has been done, yet there’s still quite a lot left to finish. We couldn’t be doing any of this without the help of our wonderful friends and I want all of you to know how truly grateful I am for your support. If we had more people like you, this world would be a more wonderful place.

Alethe’s babies are happy and chubby; their eyes have already changed color. Many of my older kitties are doing fine, yet some of them are having health problems. Speki has injured his eye and is under treatment; the oldest cats have a hard time with the heat, so every day trips to the vet are a must. When the Fall comes, I’m hoping everything will be easier.

We have made a ChipIn in order to try and obtain necessary funds for paying for food and veterinary care http://danicascatsheter.chipin.com/cat-shelter-felix.  Every cat deserves to be safe, well fed, healthy, loved and cared for, yet it’s not easy to raise funds to enable all of the shelter kitties to have long and happy lives. 

We struggle on a daily basis to cover all of the expenses and we need your help!

Repairs have cost much more than expected, new problems have arisen way too often and we really cannot finish everything that needs to be done alone.

Here is some more news and photographs from Danica at Felix Shelter, regarding additional roofing problems which have now surfaced.  Please support the repair work in any way that you can – donation info is given below.

Regarding repairs, I’m copying the most important part of my blog post. 

“The roofing repairs began last weekend. There’s obviously something horribly wrong with the roof – as soon as the workers started to fix it, a hole opened in the kitchen ceiling. The entire roof structure is worn out and some of the roof rafters are half rotten.  There’s a crack in the major roof support beam which holds up the middle portion of the roof and carries the load.  Plus everything needs to be fixed before winter!

The strengthening of the roof structure will be done by installing additional support.  There is another problem with the eaves that will need to be replaced entirely. 

However, supporting the existing roof is just a temporary solution. I hope to replace the entire roof next year, thus solving the problem once and for all.”

There is always too much to do and not enough money to do it with…

All my new kitties are doing well, Alethe’s babies are getting bigger every day and Giuseppe and Klea are having the time of their lives in my backyard. Little Kami is in the house and she is already spoiled rotten.

Hello, Mark,

I just wanted to share some news with you. 

Believe it or not, I have 12 new kitties, including that poor mother cat and her babies!

All of them arrived from Belgrade. My new kitties are Giuseppe (a grown up male dumped on the street, well rounded and neutered), Klea (rescued from some concrete backyard where a pack of dogs was killing cats on a regular basis, she is a blue-eyed white female), Alethe and her newborn kittens, five of them (she gave birth in a pizzeria) little Kami (a tortie kitten) and three siblings Edan, Ivor and Arrow (their owner didn’t want them anymore).  

Alethe’s babies are doing well and getting bigger every day. Kami, Edan, Ivor and Arrow are kept indoors while all the other kitties are in my backyard, enjoying the summer. 

Roofing repairs will start this weekend; wish us luck!

There’s always a lot going on here…

Serbia: Latest From ‘Felix’ Cat Shelter / Sanctuary – Photos, Info and Appeal to Help With New Building Updates Due to Terrible Winter – Can You Help Please ?

My name is Danica Mirkovic, I’m the president of Felinologic Association Felix and the owner of Cat Shelter Felix (it’s more of a sanctuary) in Serbia.

Felinologic Association Felix is an association of cat lovers, founded by my associates and me in Novi Sad, Serbia, a few years ago. It is registered as a nonprofit organization in Serbian Business Registers Agency, ID number: 08841187, Tax Identification Number: 103793133.

We were taking care of stray cats, trying to make their life on the street easier, but our protégés were endangered all the time. I have always thought that building of a shelter would mean safety for those (and other) cats so it finally took place in 2010.

My shelter is registered as a shelter of Felinologic Association Felix in Ministry of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry and Water Management, Department of Veterinary Medicine.  Cat Shelter Felix is located in a small village in Vojvodina, Serbia.

I have more than 100 cats in my shelter right now, all of them ex – strays. They are all neutered and spayed, vaccinated and checked by the vet on the regular basis and although some of them are very old or chronically ill it seems that they enjoy their life here.

In spite of the fact that my shelter is rather crowded, I can never turn my back on a cat in desperate situation, therefore they keep arriving every now and then. As the number of cats grows bigger, my expenses rise and it becomes harder and harder to defray them all, but the sight of happy kitties that are playing and running and resting completely relaxed, probably for the first time in their lives, makes all the efforts worthwhile.

The situation in Cat Shelter Felix is very dire indeed as the shelter has been damaged by unusually harsh winter. Workers are supposed to start repairing a roof and making a concrete backyard in April and it will cost about 8,500 euros.

My shelter depends of donations entirely and every kind of help is needed, welcome and greatly appreciated.

Workers are supposed to start repairing a roof and making a concrete backyard this month and it will cost a fortune! I desperately need help.

Urgent help needed
All of you remember this last dreadful winter, when Europe, including Serbia was caught in the grip of uncommon deep freeze. My shelter had been cut off by heavy snow for days. By some miracle, the roof and the wire mesh were able to sustain the maximum snow load but haven’t got through the winter unscathed. They’re severely ravaged by an extraordinary amount of ice and snow they were never meant to endure.

We definitely cannot get through another winter like this.  Workers are supposed to start repairing a roof and making a concrete backyard this month. The existing concrete surfaces which are cracked and worn out must be removed and replaced. When it rains, water collects and pools in my backyard so extra drainage needs to be added. I am worried sick because of the expanses as these repairs will cost a fortune yet they’re necessary. It all needs to be done, and done now. And again I’m forced to ask for your help, as I cannot do this alone.

As all of you know, my shelter depends on donations entirely. I’m very much aware that most of the people are strapped for money these days, notwithstanding your help is desperately needed.  My kitties and I are boundlessly grateful to all of you who support us through these hard times. You truly reinforce the belief that together we can make a difference

Shelter Skelter: Horrifying Conditions at ThailandAnimal Shelter Revealed

Tony’s Shelter, in Pattaya, Thailand, has been under fire for years from PETA and compassionate people all around the world for keeping animals in filthy conditions and failing to provide them with even basic veterinary care. Here are just a few of the animals who have suffered at the hands of Tony, a wealthy local businessperson:

A dog with at least two broken bones and who was unable to walk was left to die on the concrete floor of a pen with several other dogs. A kind-hearted visitor to the shelter tried to bring the dog to a local veterinarian, but the dog died before he could be moved from the shelter.

This dog—whose rear legs were both paralyzed—was forced to drag himself around a filthy, mud-bottomed cage.

Frequent complaints from shelter visitors have reported that puppies are sometimes eaten by starving adult dogs and that adult dogs eat the bodies of their dead companions.

This dog had a prolapsed uterus that was left untreated.

One dog had a maggot-infested wound on his or her paw.

Dogs are not separated by age, sex, size, or temperament, which leads to frequent fights and severe competition for food.

A dog with a gaping wound on his shoulder was confined to a cage with several other dogs and was apparently given no treatment for his injuries.

Even though Tony’s Shelter claims to be in desperate need of supplies, medicine that PETA took to the shelter to help alleviate the suffering of animals who were infected with mange was never used.

The vast majority of the dogs housed at Tony’s Shelter are underweight or emaciated.

Please help PETA keep the pressure on Tony’s Shelter to improve conditions immediately or close the shelter altogether by writing to your local Embassy of Thailand asking the ambassador to intervene on behalf of the animals at Tony’s immediately.

Spain: Rocio Update 3/03/12 – She Has Now Had Her Operation.

Dear All, 

The operation was very complicated because the bones had already fused together due to the weeks that had passed since the accident but she is doing well. We are waiting for the new pics from after the op but here you´ll find the latest made.

Now she will stay at the clinic for a week and then she will need a temporary (or better still, permanent!) loving home where to recover so if you have any Spanish contacts that might help please forward this message to them, thank you.

We still have a shortfall of about 300 euros for the surgeon’s bill so please keep telling your animal loving contacts about this sweet girl. Right now the shelter is literally inundated with animals that require urgent veterinarian care (mainly galgos, Spanish greyhounds abandoned by the hunters) so this is very hard for them and the animals.

Lastly, if you know of any good people that would like to volunteer on a working holiday to help at the shelter (taking the doggies out, cleaning, feeding etc) they would be more than welcome! If they have knowledge of Spanish they can contact María Teresa directly at  animalesdebaeza@gmail.com, otherwise they can write to me or ring me at 0033 555476873 This is an outstanding organization in Spain, as they have taken over the dog pound and are running it as a no-kill shelter, an example for all the world to follow. The shelter is in Baeza, not far from Jaén in Andalusia.

Buenas noches, me ha llamado el veterinario, Rocio ya esta operada, todo ha salido bien, ha sido bastante complicado pues le habia unido el hueso bastante mal, estara en la clinica una semana, pero despues necesita una casa de acogida con urgencia, por favor alguien puede ayudarle????, es una perrita muy buena, y adoptable, por lo que es casi seguro que no tarde en salirle adoptante, por favor es necesario para su recuperacion, espero que alguien tenga un hueco para ella
