World Wide Legal Action 4 Animal Rights

http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/LAAR

Currently has 1,168 members; why not sign up and increase the membership ?

This dynamic group is designed for people concerned and involved in promoting animal welfare legislation regardless of geographical borders, culture, race, religion or socioeconomic boundaries.

We invite all those people worldwide, who love and respect animals, those who are studying law and effectively working within the legal field to join us in a concerted effort to elevate the status of animals in our global society.

Our goal is to disseminate information pertaining to international humane legislation, post information, action alerts , to share ideas and to offer collective support to any member who is faced with an animal related dilemma.

We envision a new world order, which encompasses comprehensive and efficient legislation, to protect all animals, companion, agro, captive and wild, from the inhumanity of man. In concert with legislation, there must be the strict implementation of animal protection mandates and consequent punishment for those unobservant of the law!.

No law can be effectively observed without awareness and community involvement, so we invite you to join us and to create a new chapter in animal rights.

Germany: ‘Fox Week’ Sees Hunters Killing Thousands of Beautiful Animals – ** Please Crosspost ! **

Please find photos of this week’s find in a German animal body disposal unit:

6 freshly shot foxes (3 last week already) from last weekend presumably.

It is the German Hunters’ annual “fox week” apparently, where they specifically kill large numbers of foxes.

All these pics (except for ‘hunter forum’ one referenced below) were taken at a German animal disposal collection point .   This is really just a bin – a rubbish bin in a freezer – where people deposit animal bodies and parts to be disposed of: run-over pets, slaughter waste, “euthanized” animals, kills by hunters – entire or just skins, legs/feet, heads ..

Foxes are a regular feature of this bin, and with the current annual “fox weeks” in Germany thousands of foxes are being shot these days up and down the country.

It’s been 9  in 7 days so far in this ONE location.

Animals are found with their chest torn open where the bullet left them; some obviously did not die on the spot, as evidenced by blood on the outside of the body and around the mouth.

This is a German hunters’ forum :

Uk (England): Thanks for all your Support – A Christmas Message

SAV Christmas

Well, today (19/12) it was going to be a pond clearing day by volunteers at the local Forestry Commission http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/HCOU-5YHJS7   area called ‘Jeskyns’ :

Newsletter Linkhttp://www.forestry.gov.uk/website/forestry.nsf/byunique/infd-6drl75

But for some reason; don’t ask why, but just possibly because it was around 4 degrees below Zero, there were too not many volunteers to go into the water; none to be exact.  So, in order to have some fun and celebrate the end of a great year protecting both wildlife and woodland in the area, why not have a Winter Barbeque !

So that is what we did.

Here are a few piccys of the volunteers very cold but very enjoyable few hours out in the Winter sun.

A lot of the time I personally was thinking about the Balkans dogs and cats who are having to survive conditions like we experienced here on an everlasting basis at the moment.  They are not able to fill themselves with food or go into somewhere warm when the need arises.  They are always hungry and they are always cold.  What we experienced today for a few hours is a 24/7 situation for all Balkans strays.

2010 will see SAV continuing to fight for the animals of the Balkans states, especially for the stray and sometimes owned, roaming animals.  The fight will continue to press governments and authorities to undertake humane, No Kill sterilisation, vaccination, microchipping and identification procedures in order that owners of roaming animals can be traced and identified, and by the adoption of programmes towards the humane sterilisation of strays, the ever growing ‘pyramid of stray animals’ is gradually reduced.

One unspayed female (bitch) dog, her male (dog) mate and all of their subsequent offspring, as they mature and if none of them are ever sterilised, will produce between them a staggering 67,000 dogs within the next 6 years.

That is just one pair of animals.  Belgrade City in Serbia kills over 9,000 strays each year as part of the ‘control’ programme.  A small drop in the ocean.  A policy of humane, sterilisation and no kill for just one pair as detailed above, would in effect, prevent 67,000 further strays being born onto the streets.

Can the Serbian government not understand this ? – it appears not as they are showing no leadership and management in attempting to reduce stray animal numbers, other than the blinkered view that killing off a percentage of strays on the streets will resolve all of the problem.  It will not.

Cats under the same conditions as the dogs detailed would produce 11,606,077 new cats onto the streets in around 9 years.

We have been greeted with some great news from our buddies in India today – read all about it on our post at:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2009/12/19/india-excellent-news-high-court-allows-strays-to-be-fed-as-a-central-reason-to-the-sterlization-and-immunization-scheme-for-controlling-stray-dog-population-numbers-and-preventing-the-spread-of-r/

We hope that this same kind of approach to stray animal understanding and welfare controls could be adopted by Balkans states.  We live in hope that the Balkans government understanding light actually switches on in the near future rather than remain firmly off.

Whatever and whenever, we will continue to be a voice for both Serbian and other Balkans states animals, and we will be presenting evidence and information to the European Union Enlargement / Accession Commission whenever it is felt necessary.  We have very recently supported the call of EU Animal Welfare Intergroup / Eurogroup President Dr. Caroline Lucas in expressing our concerns about the situation at Vardariste holding facility in Macedonia.  The full story and some pictures from our Vardariste photo archive, as well as a copy of Dr. Lucas’ can be seen at the following:

Commissioner letter Macedonia Dec 2009

The year of 2009 has seen a few ‘highs’ but an awful lot of ‘lows’.  But the lows make us all ever more determined to move forward with new campaigns and actions in 2010.  2009 campaigns, along with other campaigns we are involved in outside of the SAV ‘box’, such as investigating long distance live animal transport in the EU, teach us many things, and we hope that we can group all our experiences, the highs and the lows together, to tackle balkans animal abuse as a more stronger and effective group in the future.

I would like to thank everyone for their involvement, support and hundreds of comments which have been left on the SAV site.  Every one is read fully, I can assure you.  Very limited resources do not allow replies to everyone who comments, but we thank you for them; please keep them coming !

Finally, I would like to wish you all a very enjoyable, cruelty-free Christmas this festive season.  Regards go to all your friends and family.

2010 is a new year, with new problems and hopefully new solutions and campaigns to resolve them.  We are not going anywhere, so we look forward to enjoying your company once again at SAV in the new year of 2010.

SAV Christmas

Regards and thanks

Macedonia: No Change at Skopje – Now the EU Animal Welfare Intergroup President Writes to the EU Commissioner Asking for Actions

Macedonia

There appears to be very little, if any change to the situation in Macedonia.

Demonstrations have been taking place outside of the offices of the Mayor and the Republic authorities.  These have been demonstrations against the killing of stray dogs and cats in Vardariste, Macedonia.

Video Link:   http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=185321080679

SAV have been sent the following message from an activist in Macedonia.

Their identity will not be given.

The message reads:

————————————————————————–

I’m writing to you because I know that you are the person who is trying to help the stray dogs in Skopje, holding facility Vardariste, and that you are doing your best to stop the massacre in our city.

I’m not sure that you get all report about situation of abandoned dogs in Skopje, but it’s because we are too busy, hoping we’ll finaly succeed to solve the problem by our own. Obviousely it’s not possible.

Unfortunately, despite a little progress, the things are not changing, the dogs are killing brutally everyday.. So I’m writing to you, hoping that you won’t forget us and hoping you could help.

Aid holding facility is still opened just for six hour weekly, cooperation with organisations for animal protection is not existing. Entrance in this holding facility  is still not allowed for volunteers, we cant’t take pictures of dogs in there.

Contract with two volunteers has expired and now they don’t allow  us to sign a new contract, not to talk about transparency, which is poor.
Mortality in aid station is officially about 60 percents -unofficially about 90%, the dogs are despairing everyday.  Public informations about aid station are hidden. Although we requested informations, they sent us a undefined answer, so we complained to allow free access to public informations.

Commission obligated aid station to give us corresponding info, but we still don’t have it.   We also requested explanation for big number of euthanasia.

Now we are finishing production of amendments for existing laws for animal well-being, which are in coordination with european law practice.

Also, we are working on law for prohibition of animal euthanasia.

Since the majority in the City Council and the Parliament is from ruling party it is very hard for us to loby for a support of this law among the greater number of people’s representatives.

The same situation is with program for solving problem with for growing street dogs population. The program has been made by head of an veterinary master and we are supporting it. It’s basic is CNR strategy and it need to be supported in Assembly of Skopje City.

So, we’re appealing You for help us to make a pressure on Assembly by members of European parliament.

We belive that can be very important and significant. We’re, also, appealing You to help us make contacts with people that can provide any kind of help.  Macedonia, as an state which aspires to become EU member, has to accept sugestions. I belive you know that one of condition that Macedonica has to realize to become EU member is european animal protect law.

We are trying to influence on people choise, we are dooing a lot of campaign (adopt, don’t buy), we involved a public persons, actors, musicians, we offer any kind of help for the people who will adopt stray dog  but the effect is minimal, it will took us a long period to influence and to change the mentality.

We preveousely believed that RSPCA are trying to help the dog, but obviously they are only truing to help the government to “solve” the problem!

Thank you very much, any kind of help and sugestion is very important for us in fighting for animal rights..

Sincerly,
Xxxxxxx  –   animal protection activist

But hopefully things are also moving forward in the EU with regard Macedonia.  Due to large number of letters sent to her by Uk constituents, South East area of England Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Dr. Caroline Lucas, http://www.carolinelucasmep.org.uk/   who is also Leader of the Uk Green Party – http://www.greenparty.org.uk/news  and also the President of the EU Eurogroup for Animals  http://www.eurogroupforanimals.org/about/about.htm  , has now written a formal letter to Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, The European Commission,

DG Health and Consumers, Brussels, who is responsible for animal welfare issues within the EU, regarding European Parliament / EU Eurogroup animal welfare concerns in both Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina but drawing special attention to the situation regarding stray dogs in Skopje, Macedonia.

Vard9

A copy of Caroline’s letter to Commissioner Vassiliou can be viewed by clicking on the following link:

Brussels letter stray dogs and cats

Note that in her letter Caroline states:

“These reports are extremely worrying.  They have been brought to my attention by very large numbers of people, both constituents and others, demonstrating how concerned many EU citizens are about the welfare of pets and strays.

I recognise that the Commission has limited influence on this issue, especially in countries outside the EU. However, as Macedonia is recognised as a candidate for EU membership, and Bosnia-Herzegovina is a potential candidate country, I would like to ask the Commission to ensure that improved animal welfare standards are integral to ongoing dialogues with these two countries”.

The EU all-party Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals

The all-party Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals was created in 1983 in the European Parliament to discuss European and international animal welfare and conservation issues and, where appropriate, take initiatives which can lead to legislation.

Attended by representatives from most political groups and nationalities, this influential Intergroup provides a forum for MEPs for debate and for initiating action for a wide range of animal welfare and conservation issues.
The Intergroup meets every month during the European Parliament Plenary sessions in Strasbourg.

Future actions:

Very soon, SAV will also be writing formally to Commissioner Vassiliou in support of Carloine Lucas’ letter asking her to give priority to Balkans states animal welfare issues, especially regarding the facility for strays at Skopje, Macedonia.  As can be seen from the mail sent by the Macedonian activist (copy above), the situation for Macedonian animals is terrible and we need the EU to ensure the best animal welfare policies are introduced prior to Macedonian membership (accession) of the EU.

We will be asking SAV supporters to also write to Commissioner Vassiliou asking her to take immediate action for the strays in Skopje, and elsewhere in the Balkans states.  The current situation at Skopje is unacceptable, and SAV with help from its supporters (many being EU citizens) can put pressure on the EU with regard Balkans state(s) EU membership.

Hello,

Are their any words that can describe the act of this “man”, this coward? How about any words to support this senseless, indescribable, and foolish to the core, custom??? Tradition???? Religious act?????!!!!!!!!

Do you see the way he was approaching the animal? So he was afraid of being hurt? So he was trying to keep a safe distance from a cow, who, was gentle in nature, had no mean of defense, had a robe tied around his neck, was stabbed in many areas by him, and was dying, slowly, as these cowardly sick bastards have intended?

Can you explain this barbaric and cowardly act?

The cow has died in vain, in agony, without a choice, and without committing an evil act that has brought on such horrific treatment.

But the man, the pitiful man, had a choice. He probably has celebrated afterward, and was probably regarded as a hero among those equally ignorant and heartless people. Sadly, he will continue to live his pitiful life, without ever realizing that there was anything wrong in his senseless act, without ever realizing how cowardly his action was, and he will probably pass on his “heroic” acts to his children, as if it was something to be proud of.

I pity this “man”. There is nothing more pitiful than being so purely ignorant!

He would continue to hurt, but only those that he can, those who are gentle, without a voice, and without any mean of defense.  A true coward.

A religious sacrifice? To sacrifice an animal for God?

Why would a all mighty God want that?

An important “religious sacrifice festival”? Sounds like an oxymoron?

Am I wrong with the belief that religions are intended to teach us and to guide us to be better individuals?

No, God of any religion could not have wanted this. This ritual, like many senseless religious rituals of different religions, were created by humans, at some point, for various reasons, many of which for the wrong reasons, but people followed, blindly, without ever questioning. May be they were afraid to question, that somehow they thought they would offend God?!

I believe that most of us have the intelligence, the wisdom, and most importantly, the heart, to make the right choice and to practice what are truly consistence with the intended teachings of a religion.

May you all have a safe and peaceful holiday season!

Jenny

Uk (England): Live Animals Attempted to be Exported From the Uk as ‘Boxed Meat’

Uk animal welfare campaigners have finally witnessed great results in their attempts to stop LIVE ANIMAL EXPORTS from leaving Uk shores.

The year 2009 has seen very little in live exports taking place; after years of campaigners gradually closing down Eastern and Southern English ports by way of some excellent campaigns.  2009 has been the first year in over 20 when several months at a time have passed without any live animals being exported from the Uk to mainland Europe for either immediate slaughter or further fattening.

Whenever there has been news of pending new ferry services to carry live animals from English ports, campaigners across the entire country have rallied together and formed a united front of opposition.  In just the last couple of months, campaigns against the live animal trade has seen the ports of Felixstowe and Portsmouth targetted with demonstrations, supoported by meetings with officials and demonstartions often attended by supportive Members of Parliament (MP).

As a last and desperate attempt to continue getting live animals to Europe, hauliers and exporters have even attempted to take live animals out of English ports such as Dover http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover  and Ramsgate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsgate  by trying to declare the consignment as ‘boxed meat’.

Fortunately, alert ferry workers and port officials were able to detect these illegal shipments; primarilty by the smell the was coming from the vehicles !

When they have been detected, trucks have been prevented from continuing their journey and all animals handed over to the Uk Ministry Deafra and its sub department ‘Animal Health’.

It is thought that recent attempts have been made in order to try and smuggle live sheep to Europe in preparation for the Al Adha Eid festival taking place over the weekend of 28 / 29 November.

All attempts to export animals recently have failed, and now things have moved on with Trading Standards from the English county of Kent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent    now launching investigations into the consignments.  Trading Standards  have the power to prosecute those involved through the judicial system, and welfare campaigners are eagerly awaiting the investigation report being produced by TS officials.

As the haulier involved with this illegal shipping of live animals is Dutch and operates from the Netherlands, Uk anit-export groups such as Kent Against Live Exports (KALE) have been working with Dutch animal transport investigators at ‘Eyes on Animals’ to ensure that good information flow of news is maintained and that national pressure can be put on both Uk and Dutch government authorities associated with animal transport regulations.

KALE are now awaiting the investigation report by Kent Trading Standards prior to deciding what further action needs to be undertaken.

KALE EU Correspondent and ‘Serbian Animals Voice’ founder Mark Johnson who has worked on live animal export investigations for 20 years now, has stated that

“KALE and ‘Eyes on Animals’ will do whatever it possibly can to get those involved with these illegal shipments known to the public as well as cross-Channel ferry operators.  KALE has experience of taking over 18 fromal complaints to the EU Legal Affairs team based in Brussels during the last two years, and we have no hesitation to take this case to EU legal affairs also if the Uk and Dutch competent authorities do not act over this, what is effectively animal smuggling”.

“Transporting live animals across european borders without having Uk pre-shipment health checks on the animals is a massive biosecurity issue for every european country that these animals could potentially (and secretly) be shipped through”.

“If animals were carrying any disease and were also being transported whilst being declared as ‘boxed meat’, then livestock throughout France, Belgium and the Netherlands could be infected as a result”.

This is an issue which goes way beyond the illegal shipment of live animals.

The following are articles from Kent newspapers relating to the illegal shipments:

To see a 30 minute video relating to the work of Lesley and Tatjana at ‘Eyes on Animals’ which was specially made for dutch television, please click on  http://player.omroep.nl/?aflID=10058689

Note – the video is in Dutch, but very easy to follow.  It shows the situation of and conditions for livestock being transported by road across Europe.

To visit the Kent Against Live Exports web site, please click on  http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~kale/   – for news of past actions and reports please visit  http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~kale/news/103.htm

Below are a selection of pictures from the demonstrations organised at Portsmouth harbour by organisations including KALE,  CIWF  http://www.ciwf.org.uk/   and SARC, the Southern (England) Animal Rights Coalition  http://www.sarconline.co.uk/

Mark Johnson says – “Whilst we currently have no live animals being exported from Uk shores, these recent attempts to smuggle live sheep to mainland Europe have made us very aware that we must never take anything for granted, especially in the live animal export business.  20 years as an anti-export campaigner and investigator has shown me that those involved in this trade will do anything they can to make money, even if it involves a lot of animal suffering.  These recent attempts have now turned another corner in the history of live animal exports, and I, KALE, Eyes on Animals and CIWF will do whatever we can to ensure that Uk live exports remain where they belong; only in history books”.
