Netherlands: Jaap; The Vegetarian Butcher.

Jaap Korteweg is a 9th generation farmer and founding father of The Vegetarian Butcher. How does someone, having grown up on a farm among the cows in the Dutch countryside, decide to become a Vegetarian Butcher?

When the swine fever and the mad cow disease were holding the Netherlands in their grip, Jaap was asked whether his cold storages could be used as storage for tens of thousands of cadavers.

Having witnessed this disaster, Jaap considered investing in keeping cattle, in an organic and animal friendly way. This idea was great; until the day the cattle would have to be taken to the slaughterhouse. From that moment on he decided to become a vegetarian. But he missed the taste of meat so much, that he promised himself he would only eat meat when he went out for a meal.

It was clear to him that he had to find something that could satisfy his craving for meat, without actually having to eat animals.

After a ten-year search, Jaap developed and found innovative meat substitutes with a spectacular bite and texture. With the help of top chefs, he added the flavour and experience of true meat to the products. In addition, he saw a lot of potential in the protein rich and organic lupine from Dutch soil.

Together with concept designer Niko Koffeman, chef Paul Bom and a devoted team, he is working on a big transition from animal to vegetable meat. Their ideal is to have meat enthusiasts experience the meat free products and to realise they don’t have to miss out on anything if they leave meat out of their diet for a couple of days a week. Jaap and his team’s ambition is to become the biggest butcher in the world, in a short time.

UK: Have Your Say About Banning Live Animal Exports Post Brexit. Only One (1) Week Remaining – Act Now.

SAV Comment – Everything here in the UK is looking good for a ban on live animal exports once the UK leaves the EU.  Groups and citizens are lobbying real hard for the ban to be imposed.

We are not currently allowed to ben under EU rules but when we take back our own control as voted for by the people of the UK, it will be a policy which can be implemented by a UK government.   ALL EU regulations (1/2005) on the welfare of animals during transport is basically a joke; and always has been.   The EU does not enforce its own legislation.  As with many animal welfare issues, such as migratory bird shooting covered by Venus in a recent post, the EU is utterly useless.  They want to talk big and pretend to have all the regulations and legislation in place, but the reality is, it means nothing.

Here is your chance to have a final say on an issue that has been open to the public for a while.  Please note that thee is now only ONE WEEK LEFT in which to submit any response.  The fight will not stop until the UK leads the way and bans live animal exports !

Mark,

(UK government) Environment Secretary Michael Gove is seeking your view on the transport of live animals, right now. Will you join over 40,000 SumOfUs members and call on him to end the transport of live farm animals for slaughter?

Michael Gove: stop the horrors of live animal transports now!

We know that Michael Gove is considering a ban on the live export of animals after Brexit to help the UK become a world leader in animal welfare.

But we need to show him that the public is behind a ban to make sure he takes action.

And we only have one week to do it!

Michael Gove: stop the cruel transportation of living farm animals.

Thanks for all that you do,

EU: More than 53 million wild birds are legally shot down each year!

More than 53 million wild birds are hunted down legal by hobby hunters every year in the European Union, including numerous species that are critically endangered in Germany. This is the result of a study * presented by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter and the German Council for the Protection of Birds, in which official hunting statistics from a total of 24 EU countries plus Switzerland and Norway were evaluated.

Most of the statistics come from the hunting season 2014/15 and together they indicate a kill of at least 53 million birds per year. In addition, an unknown number of animals are killed each year in countries without evaluable data (Greece, the Netherlands, Ireland and the United Kingdom) and outside the study area in the Mediterranean or in Africa.

The authors emphasize, that a large proportion of the animals shot down are migratory birds that are in acute danger of extinction in some Member States. In Germany, for example, strictly protected lapwings, snipe-birds, turtledoves or skylarks are shot down to hundreds of thousands in France and southern Europe on their train to winter quarters in autumn. Every year, German and British hunters kill thousands of woodcock and Arctic geese from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

The long-term effect of such massive hunting is rated as devastating by the authors. In the years 1980 to 2013, at least 100 million lovebirds in the EU were legally killed by amateur hunters. During the same period, the European stock of turtle dove has decreased by 78%. In Germany, the species is on the Red List and is classified there as “highly endangered”.

“The results are alarming and they prove that hunting for certain species endangers or even completely destroys conservation efforts in other countries,” says Heinz Schwarze, chairman of the committee. The committee against bird murder and the German Council for Bird Protection (DRV) therefore demand from the European Commission to finally enforce Europe-wide hunting bans on endangered species.

My comment: who shoots migratory birds, wild birds, birds at all, and even when they fly home?
Only the insane killers, the hunters, who are favorably supported by the EU legislation.

But according to this article, the legitimate question arises: if we pay this crime syndicate to support the legal murder of
migratory birds and wild birds, then we are really to blame ourselves.

Dolphin fighter O’Barry calls Zoo Duisburg (Germany): “the largest dolphin cemetery in the world”!!

Prominent dolphin guard Richard O’Barry has dubbed the Duisburg Zoo the “largest dolphin cemetery in the world”. In total, around 150 people protest against the rearing and keeping of marine mammals in the Duisburg Zoo on Friday noon.

The words that dolphin guard Richard O’Barry had chosen were harsh and ruthless: “The Duisburg Zoo is the largest dolphin cemetery in the world,” the 72-year-old American said Friday morning at the press conference at the Maritim Hotel in Düsseldorf, before joining the demonstration in front of the entrance to the Duisburg zoo, which takes place at Mülheimer Straße.

In the afternoon, about 150 animal rights activists from Bonn, Leverkusen and even from the Netherlands demonstrate in order to shake up the zoo visitors and to buy a ticket for the dolphinarium. O’Barry meanwhile runs around with his iPad, filming the whole scene, to put the impressions directly into the net. That’s what demos look like in times of Facebook.

In 20 years, 15 animals are said to have died!

Ric O’Barry, who became the critic of the Delfin attitude after the death of “Flipper” and whose eco-thriller “The Cove” won an Oscar, came to NRW (North Rhine Westfallen, a country in Germany with 17.8 million inhabitants) at the invitation of Jürgen Ortmüller.

Ortmüller fights for a long time with his “whales and dolphin protection forum” (WDSF) against the attitude of the sea mammals in zoo. With some success, as some zoos no longer show their visitors dolphins.

The criticism of Ortmüller is confirmed by information from the Ministry of the Environment, which had claimed its association under the Environmental Information Act (UIG). In the past 20 years, a total of 15 dolphins have died: “And according to a report from the “Spiegel” in 1997, there were 47 deaths in the period before,” said Ortmüller.

O’Barry’s appeal: “Don`t buy tickets for dolphin shows”.

Veterinary and zoo directors called O’Barry liars, because they knew about the agony of the animals. In their concrete pools, the dolphins had never felt the rhythm of the oceans. Zoo-born animals never learned to swim and hunt in the open sea. Also, their immune system could no longer adapt to the conditions of the open sea, so the animals could never be reintroduced and would have to spend their lives in captivity. The education order, with which the zoos argue again and again, O’Barry rejects the zoo directors. “Then you would have to show the children dinosaurs.” His message that wants to transport the former coach of “Flipper”: “Don`t buy tickets for dolphin shows.”

Incidentally, the Zoo Duisburg was not prepared to comment on the WAZ media group (The local newspaper, where the article came from).

On July 6, the city and WDSF will face each other in front of the administrative court in Dusseldorf, because the Duisburg Zoo denies the dolphin protectors the insight into the documents related to the breeding and keeping of the dolphins.

USA: Activists Facing YEARS In Prison For Showing Turkey Farm Abuse.

Mother’s Day: for Tammy.

A few days ago I got a video.
It was about a dairy farm in Australia, the second largest in the country.

Tammy lived in this barracks with others and she was very pregnant.
Sadists and criminals wanted to force her baby out of her.
They used a machine called a “calf puller”.
They ripped Tammy’s body apart, Tammy screamed with fear and pain, but she could not escape because the psychopaths were holding her body with metal tongs.
The calf died during birth, Tammy a few days later. She was not even provided with veterinary care after this ordeal.

For Mother Tammy, for all the Tammys of this world, I feel strong pain, anger, and infinite sadness.

I think of all the unknown mothers, who we “honor” them this day- like every day – with pain, torture, sadism.

Since years, Mother’s Day has been regarded as the monopoly of love and gratitude only to human mothers; the advertising participates, the media join in, a dulled society is involved.

We, the Monarchs, have established it and exchange gifts and thanksgiving among us; because the ruling species always remains united and strong, and uses a proven industry, namely the advertising industry, to sentimentalize this monopoly of love and gratitude for human animals only.

And so on that day, I feel hate and contampt for a society, that monopolizes the right to life and freedom on its species, and thus proves that this society achieves for centuries the moral bankruptcy.

Dear Mark

Please join Stop Live Exports, Animals Australia, RSPCA and Animal Justice Party at Fremantle Port tomorrow.

The victims of live export need you this Sunday! Yes, yes – we know it’s Mother’s Day, but spare a thought for all the mother ewes and their new-born lambs aboard those shipments we saw in Fazal’s harrowing footage on 60 Minutes.

Notorious live export ship, the Al Shuwaikh, (see photo below) loaded 60,000 animals in Adelaide and now it’s on its way to Fremantle to load more, bound for the Middle East where it’s approaching summer… the most dangerous time of year for Aussie sheep.

Al Shuwaikh RS web
This ship is operated by Emanuel Exports — the company at the heart of the recent explosive 60 Minutes story that revealed the routine, extreme suffering of animals at sea.

As the Al Shuwaikh is on its way to load in Freo, while the government will be deciding the fate of millions of sheep – the findings of the McCarthy review of live sheep exports is about to be released next week,  Sussan Ley, Liberal MP is adamant she will be push ahead with her Private Member’s Bill this month, to end the live sheep trade and the Greens’ Senator, Lee Rhiannon and Senator Derryn Hinch will table a Bill in the Senate to end the trade.

Help us convince the federal government of the right action to take – this protest is our LAST CHANCE to send the strongest possible message that live export cruelty must end.

Animals Australia will be there.
Animal Justice Party will be there.

Josh Wilson will be there.
We will be there, and we hope YOU will be there too!
(Greens may be there depending on availability).

Please, help us make this event MASSIVE!

WHEN: 2PM Sunday 13 May

WHERE:

The pier next to the Maritime Museum. This is about a 700 metre walk from Fremantle train station, and there is plenty of parking.

Location web

WHAT: We will have hundreds of signs there for you, but if you have the capacity to do so, you can DOWNLOAD AND PRINT SIGNS HERE.

Wear your Stop Live Exports, Animals Australia or Animal Justice Party t shirt if you have one.

WHY: To remind the government that putting tens of thousands of sheep on 40 year-old ships and sending them to the Middle East is always going to have disastrous outcomes and this trade needs to end NOW.

Please RSVP via FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE if you’re on Facebook.

Sheep on live export ship

This is not a dream.

15 years. Mark, that’s how long I’ve dreamed of seeing a headline like this. Since I first set foot in a Middle Eastern slaughterhouse and documented the brutal fate of sheep exported live from Australia. 15 years of investigations. Of relentless campaigning. The millions of animals we fought for and lost in that time. And the millions of people who united on their behalf — and refused to give in. I can’t tell you what it means to finally wake up to this headline:
Live export ban faces prospect of passing Parliament

It’s been 5 weeks since the world glimpsed the real life horror of a live sheep export ship. The outcry has only been getting louder. Now, for the first time, an end to this cruel trade is in sight…

For decades, gentle sheep like him have been crushed, starved, and literally cooked alive on live export ships… Historic Bills are coming before parliament that, if passed, could finally bring an end to this nightmare. Historic, because there is cross-party support from key Liberal MPs as well as Labor, the Greens, Derryn Hinch and Andrew Wilkie.

I’ve been walking the halls of Parliament and I am seeing traditional political foes, emboldened by people like you, set aside their differences to work together to help animals. This is our political system at its finest.

Mark, the next weeks and months will test all of us. We must stay loud, and stay strong like never before. Because until these Bills are debated, voted on, and (I pray) passed, live exporters will be fighting tooth and nail to kill any chance of this legislation becoming law.
They too are walking the halls of Parliament. I see them knocking on the doors of every politician who will give them time. They currently have the Prime Minister, lobbyists and big money on their side. We have the truth.

He needs us

As I write this, our campaign team is gearing up to run the biggest rally the port of Fremantle has ever seen. We’re broadcasting powerful TV ads Australia-wide. We’ve launched strategic public awareness campaigns in importing countries. Every day we’re fuelling media stories and working behind the scenes with advocates and influencers around the world…

But all this would be meaningless if it weren’t also for you. Mark, it’s your name on our petitions, behind e-mails and phone calls to politicians — that has gained animals the political attention they have today. And I know you’ll be with us to see this through.

It is this level of effort, determination and commitment to give a voice to those who cannot represent themselves, that leads to where we are now — on the precipice of historic change.
