Aquariums Deal Big Blow to Dolphin Slaughter in Taiji

Most Japanese facilities no longer will buy animals captured during the annual hunt at the cove.

May 20, 2015

David Kirby has been a professional journalist for 25 years. His third book, Death at Seaworld, was published in 2012.

In a stunning setback to the dolphin hunt in Taiji, the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums on Wednesday banned its members from acquiring animals captured during the annual slaughter.

Of the country’s 54 aquariums that house dolphins, 17 are non-JAZA members and are not bound by the decision. Aquariums from at least 20 foreign countries also acquire dolphins from Taiji. Meanwhile, it’s not clear if the JAZA ban extends to dolphins caught in places other than Taiji.

Still, the move is a big blow to the live-animal trade in Taiji. About 40 percent of all dolphins caught there are sent to aquariums in Japan, according to Sarah Lucas, chief executive of Australia for Dolphins. Nearly half of the dolphins in Japanese aquariums, meanwhile, may have been taken from Taiji.

“JAZA will prohibit its members to acquire wild dolphins caught by drive fishing in Taiji and to take part in their export and sale,” the group’s chairman, Kazutoshi Arai, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Scientists and activists applauded the move.

“This is a huge victory for the dolphins,” Ric O’Barry, director of Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project and star of the Oscar-winning documentary on Taiji, The Cove, said in an email. “And it’s another nail in the coffin for the annual dolphin slaughter. We must be vigilant however. We will monitor the captures very carefully this year as usual.”

Last month, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums suspended the Japanese group’s membership for failure “to adhere to policies that prohibit participating in cruel and non-selective methods of taking animals from the wild.”

The global organization was set to expel JAZA on Thursday if the Japanese didn’t take action.

“WAZA considers JAZA’s decision to be a welcome breakthrough and looks forward to receiving further details from JAZA in order to fully appreciate the implications of today’s decision,” the group said in a statement.

Diana Reiss, a marine mammal scientist and a psychology professor at Hunter College in New York, said she and other scientists and industry insiders had been working with JAZA and WAZA to bring about such a ban since 2004.

“It’s amazing and important news,” Reiss said. “What’s really terrific and critical about this decision is that it came from within Japan’s zoological community…which says that this needs to stop.”

JAZA’s decision, which was approved by a 142–43 vote of its members, came after years of negotiations with and pressure from WAZA.

The Taiji drives, where entire pods are forced into a small cove and then slaughtered, released, or captured and sold to aquariums for up to $150,000 apiece, has been the focus of enormous international opposition for years.

But Arai made it clear that JAZA was not rejecting drive hunts altogether.

“We do not think it is cruel to take wild dolphins…but as we have reached this kind of conclusion in relation to WAZA, we need to steer [our policy] toward breeding,” Arai said.

Ramping up Japan’s captive breeding efforts will be difficult. Many aquariums are too small to house breeding pools, and only about 13 percent of aquarium dolphins in Japan were bred in captivity, compared with about 70 percent in the United States, according to Arai.

Arai estimated it could take “five years or more” to establish adequate breeding skills in Japan. Failing that, “some aquariums could eventually face difficulty operating as they may not be able to find an alternative source of dolphins,” the Japanese newspaper Mainichi reported.

Possible loopholes in the new ban have some critics concerned.

“They say they will no longer capture dolphins in Taiji, but it’s not clear whether they’re going to capture dolphins in other places or not,” Reiss said. “This needs to be clarified with JAZA.” Moreover, non-JAZA aquariums presumably will continue buying dolphins from Taiji.

“JAZA’s decision…is a big step, and one that will hopefully contribute to an end to these hunts,” Courtney Vail, program and campaigns manager for Whale and Dolphin Conservation, said in an email. “We must still be concerned, however, with all wild captures. As long as zoo and aquaria keep the door open for acquisition from the wild, dolphins will suffer.”

England: Time Out Tigers and Wolves.

England

Tiger 1

Well as I said last week in one post, it was time to get some decorating done and to go for something big and animal.

Well here it is – our White Siberian Tiger.

It is big – around 2 metres wide by 2 metres high and it takes pride of place on the stairs leading up to the busy (and too cluttered) office. It was finished today (9/2/16) and is a really beautiful talking point for anyone who visits.

Tigger 3

There are a lot of bad things going on, especially the situation of wolves now being killed en masse in Idaho, USA; and so we need a little cheer up – and this certainly does it here.

Our ‘Howling wolf’ picture (below) is on the other wall, and so anyone coming to visit gets a clear message that this is an ‘animal’ place ! – I guess that they also know I have a special place within me for wolves – I will always try and be a positive voice for them.

USA: 4,000 Dead Wolves as Idaho Starts Aerial Killing !! – Disgusting !!

USA1

cropped-oregon-wolf-new-year.jpg

Dear Mark,

The federal wolf-killing machine is cranking up again in Idaho.

The Center for Biological Diversity has learned that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services plans to send gunners in helicopters to shoot wolves in the Lolo Elk Management Zone of the Clearwater National Forest.

This is happening as the number of wolves gunned down, trapped and poisoned since 2011 surpasses 4,000 dead — more than half of them in the state of Idaho alone. We’re worried this month will be a repeat of last February, when 19 wolves were shot by aerial gunners in the Lolo.

The Center is committed to fighting wolf killing, but we need your help to win. Please contribute to the Center’s Predator Defense Fund, and we’ll put your support to work defending wolves.

Anti-wolf militants have made it clear that they won’t stop until nearly every wolf in Idaho is gone, and they have powerful friends ready to spend taxpayer money to help. The Idaho Legislature is right now budgeting another $400,000 to kill wolves in the 2016-17 fiscal year. Last year similar funding was used by the state to kill 72 wolves at an estimated cost of more than $7,000 per animal — and that’s on top of the 250-plus killed by private hunters during the 2014-2015 season. The wolf haters are willing to spend a publicly funded fortune to exterminate this intelligent, social species.

We need your help to stand up for wolves. The Center will use your gift to the Predator Defense Fund to defend wolves from the statehouse to the courthouse.

We know how to win for wolves. We have an unmatched quarter-century of experience. We’ve defeated wolf-killing proposals from the Great Lakes to the Pacific. We’ve even won in Idaho, the deadliest place in America for wolves — just last year we forced the state to abandon its plans to send a trained wolf killer into the Frank Church/River of No Return Wilderness. Our seasoned lawyers, scientists and activists are the best defense that wolf families have.

Help us ground Idaho’s helicopters and send Wildlife Services’ killers home. You can contribute to our work with a donation to the Predator Defense Fund.

4,000 dead wolves is 4,000 too many.

For the wolves,

USA: Questions Over Alaska’s Forests – Stop Logging Or Continue ?

USA1

alaska trees

CBD header

Dear Mark,

After years of public outcry in defense of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service finally declared it would end clearcut logging of old-growth trees — many of which are centuries old. But a new plan just released by the agency doesn’t do that at all. It calls for 15 more years of business as usual for old-growth logging.

We need your help to protect this majestic temperate rainforest — by far America’s largest national forest.

The new plan to log ancient trees in the Tongass will destroy irreplaceable habitat for bears, salmon and wolves. This area is truly world class, but it’s being exploited beyond what it can sustain.

Act now to protect this national treasure from harmful old-growth logging. Tell the Forest Service to revise its draft plan and better manage the Tongass for wildlife.

USA: New York Horse Drawn Carriage Update.

USA1

new york 1 feb

HORSE SENSE:  CarriageGate:  So-called “compromise” bill is shelved.

2/7/16

We need a total ban not a “compromise” that will doom the horses to a life of misery.

Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages   www.banhdc.org
Horses Without Carriages International     www.horseswithoutcarriages.org

our campaign is dedicated to banning the inhumane, unsafe, anachronistic and hack line horse-drawn carriage trade  in NYC

CARRIAGE GATE:  So called “compromise” bill 573-B shelved.

By this time, many of you have heard the news:

On Thursday morning, we learned that Bill #573-B was pulled from the agenda a day before the scheduled vote by the City Council.   It was a terrible bill.

EQUINE EXPERTS OPPOSE BILL:  Along with many equine experts and anti-horse slaughter experts, we were vehemently opposed to this bill.  It was not good for the horses.  We believe Mayor deBlasio should have been held to his campaign promise to shut down the inhumane and unsafe carriage trade.

Check out our two past newsletters below  to read their statements.  Is our society really so jaded that we value the opinion of someone like Pink, Pamela Anderson or Kathy Najimi regarding this bill – over equine experts who really know horses and the issue?

https://www.robly.com/archive?id=aa60c69b031589a3752101857502034b

This misguided, substandard  and badly researched alternative bill hurt the horses  and alienated just about everyone other than those who expected political paybacks.  Allowing this bill to pass would only have legitimized an abusive business.  The prospects of a ban would be finished.

IS THIS THE ONLY WAY  – DECEPTION?  NY Class, backed by PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, LCA and ALDF, shamelessly sent out this announcement claiming that the bill would do the following :

Reducing the number of carriage horses by nearly half.

Requiring that the remaining horses live and work in Central Park – not on dangerous city streets where they are risk being spooked or struck by passing cars.

Nearly doubling the minimum size of their stalls to 100 square feet

Requiring daily turnout and time to roam, an essential component of their mental and physical well-being, and
Providing sanctuary to the retired horses and preventing them from being sold for slaughter.

NOT TRUE:  The only problem was that some of their claims were not true or manipulated  to sound desirable.  The most glaring false statement was that the bill would require daily turnout. This was simply not true!   The bill did not call for turnout to pasture because none was planned.  A quick search of its text verified this.  It is very telling that  NYClass, joined by these other organizations,  would not tell the truth about the bill and deceiving the public was the only way to get support for a bill that would have continued equine suffering.  The other organizations followed suit even after I  called it to the attention of someone at HSUS and asked her why they were supporting a lie – and allowing their name to be used in this fashion.  I did not get a reply.

OUR RESPONSE:

 – the 100 square foot stalls  are still too small  and would (considering the size of the stable) probably be on the upper floors – once again reached by steep ramps.  Experts  recommend 196 sq. ft for draft horses who weigh between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds.
– There cannot be a guarantee that these  privately owned horses would go to sanctuaries since the owner could sell to anyone, including another carriage business.

 – There was a glaring loophole in the “slaughter” section of the bill that would have allowed the horses to go to kill auctions.  Other than one slaughter house in NJ that is allowed to operate because it supplies horse meat to zoos, there are no slaughter facilities in the US.  They are located in Canada and Mexico.  The appropriate wording would address “auctions” – but our pleas landed on deaf ears.

 – Oddly, the bill reduced the horses by half but did not reduce medallions/carriages so the horses would have been overworked.

– Lastly, confining the carriage horses to Central Park would not have miraculously prevented accidents as claimed.  The southern end of Central Park is very congested with masses of people, baby carriages, bikers, skaters and skateboarders.   It is the nature of a horse, a nervous prey animal,  to spook and bolt unexpectedly at the slightest provocation.  The picture above shows a spooking accident that happened in the park in 2011.  Luckily it was photographed.

 new york 1

CENTRAL PARK NOT SAFE:  It  is naive at best to suggest that horses are “safe” in the park. Enforcement of regulations would be even more difficult: out of sight, out of mind.  Serious accidents have happened inside of Central Park, where carriage horses have spooked because of noises and fireworks.

PEDICAB DRIVERS OFFERED UP AS A SACRIFICE:  The bill also targeted pedicab drivers, not allowing them to work below 85th St. where the tourists are.  This would have put them out of business.  Pedicab drivers number more than 1,000 while carriage drivers number fewer than 300.  This gross inequity came to the attention of the Transit Workers Union, which began to organize the pedicab drivers.

UNION VS UNION – TIME TO PULL THE BILL:  The carriage drivers decided that they did not like what the bill offered them and voted against it, parting with the Teamsters.  On Wednesday night,  the president of the Transit Workers Union local said  that if the bill were to pass, they would file a law suit against the City for taking public park land for a private business .

A combination of the Teamsters withdrawing their support of the bill, coupled with a threatened law suit and a potential battle of one union against the other, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito withdrew the bill.  Many Council Members want Teamster support and would have changed their vote to NO.

BAD FOR SPEAKER & MAYOR:  A loss like this is bad for both the Mayor and Speaker. It shows they lacked the ability to put together a deal that everyone liked. Trying to decimate the pedicabs with the assistance of the entitled carriage trade and some naive animal rights groups is shameful; and selling the horses out to a life of continued misery – but having to lie about it – equally shameful. It was a bad bill.

WHAT NEXT?  We do not know what will happen next.  But this issue has been tossed around for 30 years.  Yes you heard right.   It is nothing new.  We started the most recent campaign in 2006.  We need supporters who have the integrity, intelligence and courage  to make a ban happen.  The carriage drivers have been offered several different alternative industries to make a living — more than many other people who lose their jobs.  They have turned down all of them, digging in their heels.  Why does this tiny trade – fewer than 300 people have so much clout in the City Council?  That remains the questions.  Why?

A bear sits alone in a pit in the utterly depressing Kaliningrad zoo for many years. The environment is not appropriate to the species it consists only of concrete. I fight for a couple months to find a organisation to help the bear out of this bad conditions. Nobody want to help me. I think the problem is that the bear is in Russia. Its not so easy to help him, but I never give up.

Unfortunately, the bear can not be reintroduced he is too long in captivity, but I hope I can find a sanctuary for him.

Please help me, please sign the petition. If enough people sign we can help the bear to start a new live in good conditions. The petition is aimed at ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), HSI (Human Society International) and Four Paws International Vienna. Please help sign and share the petition.

Thank s to Jane for sending this.
