On this issue, here is a message from Linda who is involved with Stichting ActieZwerfhonden – the (Turkish) Stray Dogs Campaign Website based in the Netherlands.

They are doing some fantastic work for strays in Turkey – please support them if you are able.

From Linda:

Dear all,

If these 700 dogs were the only ones i would have been glad.

Thousands of dogs are dumped in the woods and hundreds of thousands nearly a million are wandering in the streets

For several years StrayDogsCampaign has been working hard to draw attention to the stray and shelter dogs in Turkey. Thanks to your support and the help of a small but enthusiastic team of volunteers, the foundation has been able to make positive changes for the dogs, but there are still major problems.

On this website you can read more about the stray dogs issue, the situation in the Turkish shetlers and about the projects that the foundation supports.

You can navigate through the menu or find your way by clicking on the bold printed links.

With the detailed website, StrayDogsCampaign tries to draw attention to the situation of the dogs in Turkey and at the same time aims to achieve a change in mentality, which is a necessary part in the solution of the issue on stray dogs, through the one and only right way: Neuter and Release

You can find more information about the definition of this method and why StrayDogsCampaign works this way on the website as well.

StrayDogsCampaign tries to help the dogs in their own habitat, and does not mediate in re-homing of foreign dogs in the Netherlands. You can decide to support a little friend by adopting a dog on a distance through StrayDogsCampaign. With this adoption procedure you will help the dogs in the shelter. You can also subscribe as a friend of the Sutculer, or to the campaign Every little chunk helps, or simply become a friend of the StrayDogsCampaign.

So you can decide for yourself which one of our projects you want to support.
You can also support us by ordering one of our articles, the revenues of which will go towards helping the dogs.

If you have any other ideas to help us, please let us know; every kind of support is most welcome! http://www.actiezwerfhonden.nl/duits/homepage/

Help us help the dogs!!

On behalf of the The StrayDogsCampaign Foundation and the dogs:
thank you very much!!!

Please Send An E-mail To Help Wild Horses

Public Comment Ends Friday Feb. 12

Photo-IDA

Our voices are making a difference for America’s wild horses, but now is the time to keep up the pressure. In the last two months, after receiving well over ten thousand public comments in opposition, the BLM has postponed two scheduled wild horse roundups in Utah’s Confusion Mountains Complex and eastern Nevada’s Eagle Herd Management Area.

The agency even admitted that the tremendous public opposition to the roundups influenced its decisions. Read article here.

As a result of your emails, 700 free-living mustangs have gotten a reprieve from the BLM’s brutal roundups, like the helicopter stampede in the Calico Mountains Complex that has cost 39 horses their lives so far and another 20-30 pregnant mares to spontaneously abort.

Now we need you to act again to oppose the massive removal of 1,506 wild horse in the Antelope Complex located in northeastern Nevada.

This proposed removal of approximately 75 percent of the horses would leave behind only 471 horses in the vast 1.3 million acre public lands complex! It’s hard to believe, but the BLM is actually claiming that the 1.3 MILLION acres, consisting of four herd management areas (HMAs), can only support 471 to 788 horses.

This Antelope Complex roundup is currently scheduled to take place this summer or fall. The BLM’s Elko and Ely District Offices are seeking public input for the preparation of a preliminary environmental assessment (EA). This is our chance to oppose and highlight that the BLM’s determination of the “appropriate management level” (AML) for wild horses is flawed and must be revised before proceeding with yet another ill-conceived roundup and removal of wild horses.

In Defense of Animals has secured an extension for public comment until Feb 12. So please take a minute to fill out the form at this link and customize the email. In addition, please send this alert to at least three friends and family … you never know who may want to help stop and reform this unnecessary and wasteful government program which destroys the lives of so many wild horses.

Completing the form at this link will send your comments directly to both the BLM’s Elko District Office, and the Wells Field Manager.

Thank you!

Turkey: With EU Funding to Authorities and Government, 700+ Dogs Thrown Out Into the Wilds to Defend for Themselves – Activists Call for Urgent Changes to Animal Welfare Legislation

Freezing Dogs Thrown Out to the Wilds

**IMPORTANT NOTE**

TURKEY IS NOT CURRENTLY AN EU MEMBER STATE, BUT LIKE OTHER NATIONS IN EUROPE WHO DO NOT ENFORCE ANIMAL WELFARE LAWS, TURKEY IS APPLYING TO BECOME AN EU MEMBER STATE; HENCE THE FUNDING BEING GIVEN ALREADY TO TURKEY BY THE EU.

AS WE HAVE ALWAYS SAID, THE EU MUXST ENSURE ANIMAL WELFARE LEGISLATION IS ALLIED BY THESE NATIONS BEFORE THEY ARE EVER ACCEPTED AS EU MEMBERS.

IN ADDITION, THE EU NEEDS URGENT LEGISLATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF STRAY AND PET ANIMALS.

THE EU HAS FAILED ITS CITIZENS TO DATE – NOW THE EU MUST ENTER CENTURY 21 FOR ANIMAL WELFARE.

CASTRATING/VACCINATING AND RELEASING HAS FAILED IN TURKEY !!

(please look at the photos of the volunteers feeding the abandoned dogs in the forests; most of these dogs are no longer alive)

LOOK AT THE IMAGES ON THIS BLOG AND THE FACEBOOK PAGE:

THE TURKISH STRAY ANIMALS ARE BEING PERMANTELY DESTROYED, THE PERPETRATORS, IN MOST CASES, CAN NEVER BE IDENTIFIED:

FOR EXAMPLE, OF THE APPROX. 700 DOGS ABANDONED BY THE AUTHORITIES IN THE FOREST OF BEYKOZ ONLY 200 REMAIN ALIVE.

THESE ANIMALS ARE WITHOUT PROTECTION – THEY ARE LEFT TO THEMSELVES IN THESE DESOLATE AREAS.

Abandoned Dogs 1

MANY TURKISH ANIMAL WELFARE ACTIVISTS DEMAND CHANGES TO THE ANIMAL WELFARE LAW. THEY DEMAND OUTDOOR ENCLOSURES FOR LARGER DOGS AND KENNELS FOR SMALLER ONES, SO THAT ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANISATIONS CAN, IN COOPERATION WITH COMMUNITIES, ADEQUATELY CARE FOR THESE ANIMALS.

THE CURRENT SITUATION IS LIKE THIS:

THE ANIMAL WELFARE LAW 5199 ONLY STIPULATES REHABILITATION SHELTERS FOR THE STRAYS.

THERE, THEY ARE BEING CASTRATED AND VACCINATED

WITH EU MONEY,

AND THEN RELEASED TO “FREEDOM” (???). THE LAW REQUIRES THAT THESE ANIMALS BE “FREED” IN THE AREAS WHERE THEY CAME FROM (WERE CAUGHT) IN THE FIRST PLACE.

BUT SINCE THE LARGER PART OF THE POPULACE DOES NOT TOLERATE THE STRAYS IN AREAS SETTLED BY PEOPLE THE COMMUNITIES ARE UNDER PRESSURE TO REMOVE THE ANIMALS.

THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME SITUATION AS IN ROMANIA:

THE STRAYS, AFTER CASTRATION, ARE BEING ABANDONED IN DESOLATE AREAS – MOUNTAINS, FORESTS. THERE THEY CO-EXIST WITH WILD ANIMALS.

THEY HAVE NEITHER WATER NOR FOOD NOR SHELTER.

Dogs Have NO Food

THEY ARE FAIR GAME TO THE ELEMENTS, MAN AND THE HUNTERS.

IF THEY FALL ILL OR ARE INJURED THEY DO NOT GET ANY HELP. ESPECIALLY FOR THE SMALLER DOGS THIS IS A HOPELESS SITUATION – THEY SUFFER CRUELLY.

Some of the Dead Dogs

MOST TURKISH STRAY DOGS ARE BREED DOGS WHO WERE BOUGHT WITHOUT MUCH THOUGHT AND THEN THROWN OUT INTO THE STREET WHEN PEOPLE TIRE OF THEM.

THEY CANNOT AND DO NOT SURVIVE THE BATTLE WITH NATURE AND WILD ANIMALS.

THERE ARE SMALL PUPPIES LIVING IN CAVES IN THE HAYMANA MOUNTAINS OF ANKARA. AN ACTIVIST DRIVES UP THERE EACH DAY TO TRY AND SAVE THEM FROM STARVATION:

THE TURKISH STATE MUST TAKE IST RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE ANIMALS MORE SERIOUSLY AND, TOGETHER WITH ANIMAL WELFARE, MAKE SURE THESE ANIMALS ARE NOT ABANDONED TO A CRUEL DEATH AFTER CASTRATION.

Dear All,

Written Declaration 54/2009 now has 334 signatures. I’m delighted to say
that the support from Romania has been fantastic, 19 MEPs have now signed!

Thank you all so much for your help with this. But please don’t stop
now, we still need 35 more MEPs to sign before the Declaration closes
tomorrow
. The response from Spain, Hungary, Portugal, France and
Germany has been disappointing
so if you have contacts in these
countries do please encourage them to call their MEPs and ask them to sign.

Many thanks,

Hannah

Germany: ‘Fox Week’ Update 08/02/10 – More Killings; Animals Now Skinned

Update – 08/02/10

Further to our post last week about the ‘Fox Week’ in Germany:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/02/03/germany-fox-week-sees-hunters-killing-thousands-of-beautiful-animals-please-crosspost/

We now have more photographs from the same ‘bin’ which is referred to in the previous post.

This time (week) it is nine (9) animals; six foxes last week and three the week before.  All killed by hunters.

The German hunters (self glorification) web site can be viewed at:

http://www.wildundhund.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58069&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60

As is clear from this weeks photographs, some of the animals have been skinned.

Some of the skinned animals may possibly be showing signs that the killed vixens were actually pregnant when they were killed.

See abdominal ‘dark colouration’ on the skinned animal in the photogrpah below.

Investigations are ongoing and further information will hopefully be provided on this site very soon.
