USA: Appeal – Support Needed for Six Young, Very Sick Calves

Last week, we wrote to you about six newborn male calves found starving and nearing death at a farm where some were tied to a tractor and others were abandoned in a garage. Thanks to an outpouring of support from members like you, Farm Sanctuary immediately launched a rescue effort and brought these helpless babies into the arms of emergency caregivers.

Farm Sanctuary is now administering the urgent care these calves need to stabilize their health, and their progress has been positive. Yet, their situation remains critical.

Please, make a special donation to the Emergency Rescue Fund now  to help provide the urgent rehabilitative care the calves need. Your gift will give them the second chance at life that they deserve.

Thankfully, two of the calves have thrived since their rescue and are now frolicking at the sanctuary like the youngsters they are. But, the other four are still in a very fragile state and require around-the-clock care.

  • One calf has been battling severe anemia and needed a blood transfusion. He was so weak that he could barely stand. His legs were shaking terribly, but he was fighting so hard to keep standing because a serious infection in his umbilical cord made it painful for him to lie down.
  • Another calf, the skinniest of all of the babies, is on IV nutrition. He is in so much pain from an E-Coli infection that he is refusing to eat. He is limp and lifeless, and cannot stand up.
  • All the calves have upper respiratory infections and are coughing. They also have E-coli infections, which have led to dehydration and weight loss. Their bodies are battered and weak, and four of the calves actually weigh less now than they did when they were born.

It is critical that we work now to stabilize them, get nutrition into their bodies, and treat the life-threatening infections they are fighting.

These calves are so helpless. So innocent and loving. They look up at us, pleading for us to help them. You can help give them the critical medical attention they need to recover. Please, be a part of their urgent care with a gift to the Emergency Rescue Fund today.

Your support at this critical time means the world to these calves. We will continue to keep you updated on their progress as their care continues. Thank you for being there for farm animals.

USA: Palin, The Wolf Killer now Promotes Alaska, and its Wildlife – Is That Dead or Alive ?

Can you believe it?

Discovery Communications — the parent company of The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC and others, and known for their wildlife-focused programs — is planning to produce an 8-part TV show on Sarah Palin’s Alaska!

Discovery says it regards Palin as being “one of [Alaska’s] proudest daughters.”

Never mind that the former governor was an unabashed champion of Alaska’s brutal and bloody aerial wolf-slaughter program. According to reports, she’ll earn about $1 million per episode from the nature-focused series.

Act now: Send a powerful message to Discovery Communications expressing your outrage at their action and urging them to drop Sarah Palin’s new show from their programming schedule.

Sarah Palin’s Alaska is a “reality TV” show that aims to showcase the “powerful beauty of Alaska,” according to Discovery’s TLC website.

But the real Sarah Palin’s Alaska is an ugly reality. As governor for only two-and-a-half years, Sarah Palin escalated a bloody aerial wolf-slaughter campaign that continues to this very day. She even planned to offer a $150 bounty for the severed forelimb of each killed wolf.

Palin also fought against increased protections for endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales and America’s dwindling populations of polar bears

It seems ironic that Sarah Palin will now earn millions hosting a nature show after spending years fighting against Alaska’s natural heritage!

Send a message to Discovery Communications — and let them know that Sarah Palin doesn’t deserve to represent the “powerful beauty of Alaska” in front of millions of people.

It’s surprising that Discovery Communications, parent company of such cable television channels as Animal Planet, The Discovery Channel and TLC — and known for their stunning wildlife-focused shows would chose to embrace such a controversial and anti-wildlife persona as Sarah Palin.

Please join me in calling on Discovery Communications to drop Sarah Palin’s new show.

Uk: Tally Ho ‘Conservative’ Party Leader David Cameron Described Himself as a “country boy” who Loved Hunting and Shooting

The Independent. 2 April 2010.

Cameron pledges to hold free vote on fox hunting. I always thought ban was a mistake, says Tory leader.
By Andy McSmith

David Cameron described himself yesterday as a “country boy” who loved hunting and shooting, hinting that if he was elected Prime Minister the ban on fox hunting would come to an end.

But opponents of hunting seized on the somewhat nonchalant way in which the Tory leader answered questions as a sign that he knows public opinion is against bringing back hunting and other blood sports, which were banned in 2004.

Mr Cameron stressed five times over in an interview lasting only a couple of minutes that MPs would get a free vote on the issue, and speculated that some Tories would vote against bringing back hunting.

His remarks follow the revelation in The Independent on Monday that hunt masters had been putting pressure on their supporters to go into marginal constituencies and help organise for a victory. Hunt organisers are confident that if the Conservatives win enough seats in the Commons, they will be allowed to go back to pursuing their sport in the old way.

Interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live, Mr Cameron revealed that his father, a wealthy Scottish stockbroker, taught him to shoot rabbits and his grandfather taught him to fish. He did not say which member of the Cameron clan taught him to hunt, but he defended the sport as an opportunity for people to socialise and see parts of the countryside they had not seen before. He also claimed it was no more cruel than other methods of controlling the fox population.

“I always thought that the ban was a mistake because I think it is very difficult to enforce,” Mr Cameron said. “I think it’s somewhere where the criminal law shouldn’t go. But it will be a free vote.

“I’m a country boy. I was brought up in the countryside and I love walking and riding and every aspect of growing up in the countryside. I was taught to fish by a wonderful grandfather. I was taught to shoot rabbits by my dad, and I went hunting as well,” he added. “People like riding across the countryside.  “Lots of people do it together. It’s an opportunity to see parts of the countryside you never see before. It’s something that happened in the countryside for a very many years.

The fox population has to be controlled. Every farmer will tell you that, and every farmer will tell you that the methods now being used – gassing, shooting, trapping and snaring, are very cruel. The case on animal welfare grounds for the hunting ban
I’ve always thought was very weak.”

Douglas Batchelor, chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “The tone of his interview was much more nonchalant than it was a year ago. We’re very encouraged by this. They are trying to make it a non-issue.”
