International: Petition – End The Capture of Wild Dolphins For Pathetic Holiday / Tourist Resorts.

Please support this important campaign. Thanks – SAV.

Dear friends,

The pod was swimming peacefully in Samoa when nets closed in from behind — trapping 25 wild dolphins for a luxury resort’s latest exhibit. They are now locked in tiny pens, starved of food — but we can free them.

For wild dolphins captivity is torture, their powerful sonar bounces off the walls back at them — as if they are trapped in an endless house of mirrors. Most die young from stress induced illness, but some even commit suicide. If the wealthy Resorts World Sentosa succeeds in keeping them captive then half the dolphins will die in the first 2 years — and it will legitimise the widely banned practice of capturing dolphins in the wild. We can’t let that happen — let’s use our voices to set them free.

Resorts World was forced to abandon plans for a whale shark exhibit two years ago because of the huge outcry that threatened their reputation. Let’s build a massive call now to free these intelligent, beautiful creatures — and make this a turning point in the fight to end the global wild-dolphin trade. When we reach 500,000 our petition will be delivered to Resorts World and the media. Sign now and forward this to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/saddest_dolphins

The appallingly cruel wild-dolphin industry has been banned in nations from the UK to Costa Rica. The terrifying capture process involves driving the dolphins to shallow water, where up to half drown or die of their injuries before they are even caught. If we force Resorts World to free these wild dolphins now it will send a powerful message to all other resorts, and help break the back of the capture industry. We can also give these dolphins a second chance in life — renowned dolphin expert Ric O’Barry has offered to rehabilitate them back into the wild.

Resorts World argues that their “interactive spa program” will help heal sick and disabled children – but there is no scientific evidence to support this technique, which sees desperate parents pay thousands in pursuit of an imaginary cure. They also claim their programs aid conservation – but dolphin capture drives are also hunting expeditions. The “display-worthy” dolphins are spared, while the others are butchered. By ordering wild-caught dolphins, Resorts World is driving up demand for these barbaric hunts.

The trade of wild-captured dolphins must end. The world is moving slowly but surely in this direction, and our intervention could set a valuable precedent. Resorts World has buckled under pressure before, and it can’t afford another hit to its image. Let’s join our voices urgently to free the world’s saddest dolphins, and win a crucial battle in the fight to save all wild dolphins from short, miserable lives in captivity. Sign now and send this to family and friends:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/saddest_dolphins

Wild dolphins are incredibly playful, social and caring, as well as extremely intelligent — they are utterly captivating creatures. In the world we all wish for, dolphins are not hunted, trapped and broken — they are treated with the respect that all life deserves. Today, as we work for their freedom, we are taking a small but important step towards making that world a reality.

With hope,

Subject: Miracle in Romanian Parliament – mass dog killing rejected (for the moment)

A team from a veterinary college in Holland has also near us at the plenum

Dear all,

“the worst possible thing is to have in mind that when you push the button on it’s written “yes”, you directly killed and, some of you, will do it tomorrow. You will kill directly with your hand, you will kill live creatures like us and you will not be aware of it today, maybe nor 10 years later, as other compatriots did not realized it, too. But I’m sure a day will come when you realize that you killed directly. And I deplore you for that day”    said the leader of the Parliamentary Group of Minorities, deputy Varujan Pambuccian, addressing to his colleagues during a speech in which he urged the deputies not to vote for murder.

The law project PL 912, made in the form of mass killing of dogs through the order and contribution of PDL party, has debated yesterday in the Chamber of Deputies.
To be passed, 167 deputies (out of 333) had to vote “yes”, so any member present would vote for euthanasia was very important for PDL party.

The nightmare has started from Sunday when I found how many efforts make the party in power, PDL, to implement mass killing. PDL’ deputies have been called by SMS to obligatory be present for voting on Tuesday. The directive of the party, came from the Romania ’s president, Traian Basescu, was all to vote for euthanasia.
On Monday I found out the vote is proposed to be secret and I realized that our chances were terribly decimated, and we don’t have any hope.
Then, yesterday morning two buses arrived to the Parliament with people, organized by the PDL, to counteract the “waves” made by animal lovers and claim euthanasia.

The plenum has started. PDL leader officially makes the proposal the vote to be secret. PSD president, Victor Ponta (husband of Daciana Sarbu, deputy in European Parliament and member on the Welfare and Conservation Intergoup of Animals, who always supported us) said: “we were voted by those in the balconies and by those who watch us now at TV. It is their right to know how we vote and our obligation is to assume our own vote. If you want to hide yourselves behind the the cards do it. We, PSD, PNL, PC, we will not vote, we will not introduce our cards vor voting and you will remain alone to respond to this new your contempt to your electorate.” The first victory was: put to the vote of the deputies, the proposal for being a secret vote has been rejected.

PDL leader calls a break of 10 minutes for consultation. It became more clear the scramble fight of PDL to get euthanasia and how much important the stray dogs are for the interests of many!
Each group leader has brought together their people and have started to dispute the right for living.

After the 10-minute consultation, PNL leader, another party sustaining us, Eugen Nicolaescu, starts speaking and announces that the parliamentary groups leaders have concluded that the law must be returned to the Committee for public administration and to be discussed during the next 2 weeks.

The second victory: with 247 for (of 291 total) the proposal for being sent back to the Committee,  was approved.

Why PDL has voted the law to be sent back to the Committe?

Because, once the proposal for the secrecy of the vote had failed, they realized that the law will be also rejected or a lot of risks to be rejected are, so that the sending back to the Committe gives them a chance next time.

But we have the new chance as well, to take out mass killing and come back to the initial form of the legislative project, sterilization and return, that, once adopted and applied, leads the stray dogs to become history.

If in the last week we fought the law of mass killing to be rejected now we can fight again for a real, effective, civilized law for managing the strays.

FOR THE STRAY DOGS AND FOR US YESTERDAY WAS A STUNNING WONDERFUL DAY.

I would like to thank you very much for your exemplary support you give to animals in Romania, for the demonstrations you organize in your countries, for the email and fax protests, for sterilization campaigns, for adoptions and for everything you do directly or indirectly for our animals.

Without you, many would not have happened ever!

Sincerely,

Carmen Arsene

Dear Mark,

For thousands of cattle in Australia’s top end, today is a day worth celebrating. After eight days of intense campaigning and public pressure following exposure of the horrendous animal cruelty, the Gillard Government has announced a suspension on the live cattle trade to Indonesia.

I cannot express in words my relief to know that, at least for now, animals will be spared from what I witnessed during Animals Australia’s most recent live export investigation in Indonesia. This is a huge step towards an end to the cruelty inflicted on all animals in the live export trade — but our campaign is not over yet.

The graphic images of Australian cattle having their tails broken, tendons slashed, eyes gouged, whipped, and kicked will never be forgotten. Neither will the culpability of Meat and Livestock Australia, which was revealed to have known of the atrocities in Indonesia for more than a decade. Such was the loss in faith in Meat and Livestock Australia and the live export trade that national meat consumption was reported to have dropped by 10 — 15% in one week.

The massive public outcry following last week’s Four Corners exposé eclipsed the backlash of almost any other political issue in Australian history. Over 100,000 Animals Australia and RSPCA Australia supporters wrote to the Prime Minister at BanLiveExport.com and at the same time countless politicians were adding additional pressure on the Government to act by speaking out against the brutal trade — many for the first time.

The announcement of the suspension on the live cattle trade to Indonesia is a welcome step, however, the weight of evidence from Animals Australia’s eight investigations confirms that only a complete ban on live animal exports to all countries will ensure that these images are not repeated. Such a move would also send the strongest possible message to other countries that animals, and their welfare, matter. We will continue to campaign rigorously for millions more animals who are destined to be shipped to slaughter in countries where there are no laws to protect them from cruelty.

Our recently launched advertising campaign featuring television and radio ads is one powerful way that we are reminding Julia Gillard that caring Australians will accept nothing short of a total ban on all live animal exports. We are seeking urgent donations to keep this campaign on air for as long as possible.

On June 20th, historic private members bills to completely phase out the cruel live trade will be submitted to federal parliament by independents Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon and another by the Australian Greens. These bills represent the animals’ best chance for an end to a trade that has willingly sent millions of animals to a cruel fate for the past 30 years. Please click here to send an instant letter to your local MP and state senators to encourage them to pass this vital legislation.

Up against a powerful industry and a Government reluctant to act, this past week has shown that the power of caring individuals voicing their concern is nothing short of tremendous. We couldn’t have come this far without you.

On behalf of those animals still depending on our help, thank you sincerely for your continued support.

Prime Minister responds to community outrage

Dear Mark

Last week we asked you for help to get justice for Bill, a beautiful Australian steer that met a terrifying and gruesome end in an Indonesian slaughterhouse after being supplied to that country by our live export industry. Last night – with your help, justice was done.

The Prime Minister has answered the calls of hundreds of thousands of Australians and suspended all cattle exports to Indonesia.

Today, the Prime Minister has heard the voices of Bill, Brian, Arthur, Dudley, Tommy and the 6.4 million animals sent to Indonesia before them.

Following an unprecedented outcry by the Australian community, the Government has been forced to act following revelations of terrible cruelty to Australian cattle in slaughterhouses in Indonesia shown on ABC’s Four Corners. Over the past week, more than 100,000 people have written to the Prime Minister, 320,000 have signed a petition to halt the trade to Indonesia and tens of thousands of others have contacted their local members of Parliament and Senators and spoken out on social media and traditional media. It is already being described as a “win for people power”.

The real win is for Australian cattle, that because of the support of the community and the media, will no longer face a cruel and brutal death in Indonesian slaughterhouses.

The collaboration of RSPCA Australia with Animals Australia, with support from GetUp! and their members, together with a growing group of politicians who spoke up against this cruelty has delivered this great result

While we all certainly need to celebrate this success, our work is not done.

We will be looking closely at the terms of this suspension and work to close any loopholes. And we can’t forget that over 3 million sheep and around 135,000 cattle will go to the Middle East this year and most will also face inhumane handling and slaughter.

We will need the help of the community again to ensure the Gillard Government hears their voice and ends the live export trade once and for all.

Subject: {FIAPO} Please protest last night’s blood bath in Kakinada

Dear friends,

We at ABC India have been contacted by eyewitnesses to a scene of carnage in

Kakinada last night. About 150-200 dogs were killed with strychnine

poisoning by rogue elements allegedly connected to the municipal corporation

and some MLAs. Please see video at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNa2yhC-gUw

The Animal Welfare Board of India was also contacted, and they have sent a

letter of protest to the authorities at Kakinada.

ABC India condemns in the strongest possible terms the illegal killing of

street dogs. Killing of dogs with poison is not only illegal in India, it is

unspeakably cruel. Furthermore, the killing of dog is absolutely

CONTRA-INDICATED, especially at a time of rabies outbreak. The presence of

vaccinated dogs is actually one of the best defenses against rabies in a

rabies-endemic area.

It is crucial at this time to remind all localities NOT to engage in

killing, catching and shifting, or dumping dogs. It has been established

that any destabilization of resident dog populations by killing or catching

and relocating dogs actually increases the risk of dog bites and the risk of

the transmission of rabies. The reason is that if you move dogs out of a

particular area, more dogs will ALWAYS migrate into that area, and very

quickly. Because they are new to the area and unsettled, they will fight

among themselves for dominance of the turf.

These fearful, unsettled dogs

are much more likely to bite local residents than dogs who have lived in the

area for some time, and people are much more likely to get bitten in the

crossfire as these dogs battle between themselves for dominance. The

practice of killing dogs puts people at higher risk of death from rabies and

as such can be considered at best criminally negligent. The persons

responsible for the killings, as well as for the coercion of children to

participate in the killings (as per eye witness accounts), must be charged

and prosecuted under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals Act.

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually the presence of vaccinated,

healthy dogs that helps to keep rabies out. Sterilized, vaccinated, and left

to live in peace in their areas, these dogs are our partners in the fight

against rabies. Because they are territorial, they will not let new,

unfamiliar, unvaccinated dogs into their areas who might be potential

carriers of rabies. It is crucial to understand that a stable population of

sterilized, vaccinated dogs is one of the best defenses against rabies in a

rabies-endemic area. Accordingly, we recommend that a directive be issued to

all municipalities, district collectors and panchayats that dogs are not to be

killed, but rather vaccinated and sterilized. Any action that destabilizes

local dog populations increases the risk of dog bite and the transmission of

rabies and is to be avoided for that reason. Anyone found killing dogs must

be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, for by doing so not only are

they breaking the law; they are also putting the lives of local residents at

risk.

We urge you to please write urgent letters protesting last night’s dog

killings to the District Collector of Kakinada, Mr. M. Ravi Chandra, who is

also President of the Kakinada SPCA. His email id is collector_egd@ap.gov.in.

Personally, we at SAV do not feel that this is solely and EU citizen issue.  We feel that the more videos sent from around the world, the more ‘global’ will be the message sent to Romanian politicians.  They need to be informed how the WORLD feels about their floundering for the strays.
