Romania / Uk (England): Hillside Sanctuary Welcomes the First 14 Romanian Stray Dogs to the Uk and A New A Much Better Future.

SAV Comment:   In case overseas visitors have wondered why this has not happened very much before, up until the start of this year (2012), all animals coming into the Uk from overseas to live have had to go through around 6 months quarantine – where the animal is kept under controlled conditions and monitored for months to check of diseases prior to be allowed out to its new home.  The Uk is an island, and so has been different to the rest of Europe.  Animals are allowed to see their ‘new’ owners, but they are not allowed home directly – it was a quarantine period first.

Now, since the start of 2012, Uk regulations have relaxed / changed very muuch to the benefit of the animal, and animals are allowed to enter the Uk directly without having to go through the long 6 month separation and also the very costly (thousands of £’s) process of keeping a dog in quarantine.  Disease checks are now made in advance of the animal arriving in the Uk through systems such as pre and post trip regular blood checks; pre trip vaccination certificates (are up to date) etc.  This is the same with any pet travelling between counties in Europe – as long as the animal is up to date with vaccinations and is certified for same, via the EU ‘Pet Passport’ scheme, animals can now travel around Europe very much the same as humans – they have a pet passport which allows them to do this.  There is now no need to keep animals in (Uk) quarantine prior to them being allowed to their new home; providing they are up to date with their vaccinations and have had pre-checks done in advance (as per the passport system) to ensure they are disease free, then they can now enter the Uk directly and go to their home or a facility such as Hillside, ready for further adoption.

These guys from Romania are the first batch to really show the advantage of this new Uk / EU system, and it will be the start of many animals coming into the Uk to find new homes.

Waiting to be unloaded tonight, after their long journey to Hillside from Romania, are Sanni, Brick, Lia and Lord.  Fourteen dogs (luckily four more than we were originally expecting) arrived with us safely and we were pleased that all had travelled well. The staff settled ten of the refugees in for the night at Hillside while foster carers took four of the dogs straight into their family homes. This included Petronel, who has been adopted by a kind couple who had eagerly waited for hours at Hillside for the pet transporter to arrive.

We would like to sincerely thank all our supporters who have made this journey to safety for these dogs possible. Also, thanks to Katy and Kelly who are working very hard to save these dogs and are already organising another trip to Hillside for more dogs in the near future.

Tonight – Yuri and Dalma – at last safe on British soil…

Petronel off to start a new life with his kind adopter…
