England: Tony Benn – Animal Advocate – Rest In Peace, and Thank You !

I can recall; many years ago; probably 20 or so, attending a lobby at the UK Houses of Parliament here in London, with regard the live transport of animals – what has always been my No. 1 hate.

There were probably 600-700 of us; it was a good turnout on an issue which the vast majority of the UK public feel very strongly about.

Whilst we queued outside to enter the House of Commons lobby area, there was the usual ‘coming and going’ of Members of Parliament (MP’s).  Every one of them just ignored us and what we were there campaigning for – we were viewed in their eyes as nothing much better than something you get on the soles of your shoes whilst walking through any wet street in London town

But whilst we stood in the queue, being ignored by so many; one man appeared and commenced to make his way along the line of the queue; shaking hands and offering very much needed words of support for what we were there for – .stopping live animal transport.

That man was Tony Benn, who has very sadly passed away today after a life of political fighting for the good.  Tony was also a very dedicated animal welfare / rights campaigner and a vegetarian of some 30+ years.

Shaking hands with Tony that day and hearing his supportive comments were enough alone to have made the whole thing worthwhile.

Tony was a great voice for the animals and today is a very big and sad loss for the animals (and human rights) which he has fought for over such a long time.

Rest in peace Tony and thank you on behalf of the animals and us all for the compassion and good work you undertook to give them a much stronger voice – you will be sadly missed, as will your excellent advice and knowledge on so many different subjects.

”Tony Benn spoke his mind and spoke up for his values. Whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him, everyone knew where he stood and what he stood for.

“He believed in movements and mobilised people behind him for the causes he cared about, often unfashionable ones. In a world of politics that is often too small, he thought big about our country and our world.”

England: Our Annual ‘Clustrmap’ Update Has Just Taken Place.

England

Dear alll;

today you will see our Clustrmap, the world map with red dots on the left side of the site; revert back to being blank, or just showing visitors for the single day of today.

This is a standard practice and will start afresh around 12th March.

Here are a couple of stats for the site so far:

We have had no less than 513,416 views and you have kindly left 3,891 comments on the site.

We try, but as you will appreciate, it can be almost impossible to return requested info regarding some comments left on the site.  Unfortunately there is neither the time or personnel to undertake this – we are a volunteer run group.

So if you see the world map has lost all of its red dots in the near future; don’t worry, it is not a problem with your computer – it is just an annual update to our system.  Obviously, the more hits / visits we get when we return to a ‘blank world’, the sooner all those wonderful red dots will start appearing again.

Doing what we can to spread to the global world about global animal abuse and suffering.

Please come back and visit us again – and spread the SAV word !

Thanks and regards

PROTEST AGAINST KILLING DOGS IN ROMANIA

8 March 2014

Rom 8 Mar 1

Rom 8 Mar 2

On 8 March, Romania joined the International Protest, initiated by European countries, against dog killing in Romania.

More than 500 people have participated at the protest in Bucharest (near Romanian Government), where animal lovers from other towns like Pitesti (100 people!), Ploiesti, Buzau, Ramnicu-Valcea, Moreni have also arrived.

In other around 14 towns from Romania have been as well organized protests!

We are very grateful to all of you who organized, spread, participated in your countries, in so many towns, showing the cause of the stray dogs from Romania are incredible supported from abroad.

It was probably the largest Protest has ever happened for the same cause in Europe!

Thank you!

SeaWorld’s Worst Nightmare: Calif. Lawmaker to Propose Ban on Orcas in Captivity

If passed, the bill would be the most comprehensive protection law for captive orcas in the United States in more than 40 years.

David Kirby has been a professional journalist for 25 years. His third book, ‘Death at Seaworld,’ was published in 2012.

In a surprising move that is sure to send shock waves across the entire captive whale and dolphin industry, a California lawmaker will propose legislation to outlaw Shamu shows at SeaWorld San Diego.

State Assemblymember Richard Bloom, D–Santa Monica, will introduce Friday the Orca Welfare and Safety Act, which would make it illegal to “hold in captivity, or use, a wild-caught or captive-bred orca for performance or entertainment purposes.” The bill would also ban artificial insemination of captive killer whales in California and block the import of orcas or orca semen from other states.

Violators would face a fine up to $100,000 and/or six months in a county jail.

“There is no justification for the continued captive display of orcas for entertainment purposes,” Bloom declared in a written statement prior to a press conference to be held at the Santa Monica Pier. “These beautiful creatures are much too large and far too intelligent to be confined in small, concrete pens for their entire lives. It is time to end the practice of keeping orcas captive for human amusement.”

According to Bloom, the law would be “the most comprehensive protection law for captive orcas in the United States in over 40 years.”

Under the terms of the bill, all 10 orcas held in tanks at SeaWorld San Diego, the only California facility that has whales, “shall be rehabilitated and returned to the wild where possible.” If that is not possible, then the whales must be “transferred and held in a sea pen that is open to the public and not used for performance or entertainment purposes.”

Exempt from the legislation are any orcas held for rehabilitation after a rescue or stranding, or for research purposes. But even these animals would have to be returned to the ocean or sent to a sea pen.

It is not the first time state lawmakers have tried to outlaw the captivity of killer whales, the world’s largest dolphin. South Carolina passed a bill in 1992 against captivity for dolphins and porpoises following efforts by the South Carolina Humane Society to stop a proposed dolphin park in Myrtle Beach. Just last month, New York state Sen. Greg Ball, R-Carmel, introduced a bill to ban orca captivity in that state.

Of course, there are no captive orcas in South Carolina or New York, making the California bill far more than a symbolic gesture.

At least five countries—India, Croatia, Hungary, Chile, and Costa Rica—have also outlawed all cetacean captivity, while Switzerland has banned captivity for dolphins.

Dr. Naomi Rose, marine mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute, said the bill was inspired by the orcas-in-captivity documentary Blackfish.

“The Blackfish effect has never been in greater evidence—everything has led to this, the first serious legislative proposal to prohibit the captive display of this highly intelligent and social species,” Rose wrote in an email. “SeaWorld should join with this effort rather than continue to fight it. They can be on the right side of history.”

Assembly member Bloom reached out to Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director of Blackfish, for help with the bill, who in turn consulted with Rose.

“We did not initiate this proposal,” Rose wrote. “But once they reached out to us, we dove in wholeheartedly and assisted in every way we could—helping with the bill language, information, and fact-gathering, and getting support from various sectors of the public, including the scientific community.”

Rose also gave credit to former SeaWorld trainers featured in the documentary for supporting the legislation. Rose, Cowperthwaite, and former SeaWorld trainers Carol Ray and John Hargrove were scheduled to appear with Bloom at the Friday press conference.

Should the bill become law, SeaWorld might want to look at other highly successful aquariums that do not keep cetaceans in swimming pools. The Monterey Aquarium in northern California, for example, is routinely packed with visitors, without a single whale or dolphin in sight.

In South Carolina, where orcas will likely never entertain people, staffers at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston routinely direct visitors to local waterways if they want to see dolphins.

The Charleston Post and Courier reported in 2010 that when tourists ask to see the dolphins at the aquarium, the facility’s CEO, Kevin Mills, “smiles and answers, ‘Just walk out on our observation deck and you’re bound to see them, swimming freely in the harbor.’

So- Called ‘Formal Ritual Slaughter’ and EU Dog Trafficking – and The EU Politicians Who Do Nothing For Either !

Re the following articles and other concerns from the British Veterinary Association in the UK about ritual slaughter we recently published.

UPDATE – 7/03/14 – Today we have been working with our friends at ‘Eyes on Animals’ (EonA) http://www.eyesonanimals.com/  who are based in the Netherlands, to provide further evidence to the BVA regarding the suffering involved for animals during ritual slaughter.

During December 2013, EonA and the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) visited several several Turkish slaughterhouses in the Istanbul region; which supposedly undertake Halal slaughter in accordance with the requirements.

At the beginning of the following video made by EonA and AWF, which sows their investigations in Turkey, Inspector Asalet Sancakdaroglu explains what exactly should be the process of animals killed by the Halal method.  For example, this says that animals should not be slaughtered in sight of other animals destined for the same fate.  Also in the video, you can see a slaughterman sharpening his knife directly in front of a hoisted animal which he is going to kill – again NOT in any way part of correct way of Halal slaughter.

**WARNING:**  – The following video can be distressing to viewers and we appreciate that; but it shows the full reality of what goes on every single day under the name of Halal slaughter in Turkish slaughterhouses all the time.

As shown by EonA in other investigations, many of the animals shown in these Turkish slaughterhouses have been transported from EU nations to Turkey (Turkey is not an EU member state); and so questions in the EU have to be asked about why the EU supports the export of animals reared in the EU, which would be slaughtered in the EU via pre-stunning; to be exported to non-EU nations to be killed in such horrific ways as shown without pre-stun.

Despite promises and assurance made to EU animal welfare organisations, EU politics, including the Parliament, Commission and the EU Animal Welfare Intergroup, are again here failing EU animals; just as they are failing the EU stray animals in Romania; in as much as they (EU) are talking loud and holding Press Conferences; but in actual reality are doing very little to make the situation any better for the many suffering animals.

A copy of this post and the video footage is being supplied by us to the EU AWG and EU Members of the European Parliament – our alleged representatives; to show that the export of EU animals to non-EU nations to be slaughtered in this way is not acceptable to virtually all EU citizens.  The EU Parliament and Commissions need to act and act immediately on these issues; or hopefully those who do not will be informed about how people feel about their inadequacies when we have the EU Elections in May 2014; just a matter of moths away.

The following video is very disturbing, but it is the reality of EU animals exported to non EU nations for slaughter; something which many EU politicians care little, or will do little about.  We shall see what effect this attitude has with voters in the May elections – and we will continue to expose this issue and their failings until then.

With the failing of EU politicians to do much about the Romanian stray dogs issue also, one has to ask exactly what the EU stands for now days – to introduce more nations into the ‘club’ for what ? – more illegal trafficking to go on ?.

Video link – Halal Slaughterhouses in Turkey – and the drastic need for improvements – which we would expect to come from the EU; but we do not have much hope !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sexXw-gWw8&feature=youtu.be

And further; staying on the issue of animals being transported from sources within the EU;

we also applaud the German authorities for stopping yet another consignment of very young puppies which were being transported all the way from Slovakia in Eastern Europe to a ‘dealer’ in Spain.

All of the 77 dogs were much younger than the info in their paperwork declared, and many of them were ill; much as you would expect for so many young animals being mass shipped all the way across the EU. The larger part of the animal consignment (not shown in the video) are currently in intensive care in Germany.

Video link – in the German language, but the footage of the young dogs is enough for most people to see and understand, and it clearly shows the situation of very young animals being transported across the EU by trafficking groups who are working in Eastern Europe.  It also shows the work being imposed on EU animal welfare organizations who have to pick up the tab due to the ignorance of the EU political system

Video link (in Grman):

http://www.n-tv.de/mediathek/videos/panorama/Zollfahnder-retten-77-Welpen-article12411436.html

The German authorities say that there is a ‘huge increase’ in these type of movements, and that the EU is not really ‘getting a grip’ on the situation – see above and also the Romanian dogs crisis we have so much covered recently to name but a few ! – what exactly are EU politicians ‘getting a grip’ on we ask ?

Eastern European animal traffickers are using the main European highways to cross the EU from East into West.  Young animals such as these puppies are their ‘cargo’.  As there are now no EU border controls within the EU, this type of illegal animal trading is being made much easier to undertake by the slacking of border regulations.  If animals can illegally cross borders (such as these puppies) by traders without any fear of being detected, then what other illegal products are being shipped around the EU by ‘traffickers’; again undetected, we ask ?

The EU and its alleged politicians have lots of issues to investigate and act upon.

Are we going to see anything positive before the May elections ? – probably not.  What have they done for animal welfare issues such as this so far in their parliamentary term ?

It is all very well for some MEPs to say that getting out of the EU is the answer; but for us; this does nothing to stop inaction and the continuation of the trade.  If people elect MEPs, then those people want those same MEPs to do something positive rather than to keep on telling them that we would be better out of the EU.  Being out is not the answer to the situation – legislation change is – that is what EU citizens want – if only EU politicians would deliver !!

UK Top vet calls for reform of kosher and halal slaughter practices

President-elect of the British Veterinary Association says more emphasis on animal welfare is needed

The Guardian, Thursday 6 March 2014

There is an exemption for religious groups allowing them to slaughter animals in accordance with their religious beliefs.

A total ban on killing animals without stunning them first might not be far off if religious groups cannot agree a more humane way of slaughter soon, a top vet has said.

The president-elect of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) John Blackwell said he wanted to discuss the issue with Jewish and Muslim groups in order to find a compromise that puts more emphasis on the welfare of the animal.

“I don’t think an outright ban is a long way off, there is enough of a view that this practice is inhumane and causes suffering at the time of death,” said Blackwell.

His comments are likely to cause anger among religious groups whose teachings recommend or require the slaughter of animals without stunning them first – including Jews and Muslims.

Blackwell said the BVA had not strayed into religious discussions while campaigning for the changes in the past, but that he was happy to talk to religious groups.

“We have tried to keep it out of the religious sphere. It is not an attack on religious faith, it is a view that we have taken on animal welfare,” Blackwell said.

He said that there was currently an exemption for religious groups that allowed them to slaughter animals that makes their meat halal or kosher in accordance with their religious beliefs.

But he said that the debate should be “moved forward so that the animals are stunned” before being killed. And he said that the BVA would like a “collective meeting of minds [with religious groups] to review the science”.

He acknowledged that there were likely to be “sensitivities surrounding the issue”, but said that the debate was preferable to relying on “beliefs handed down hundreds of years ago, that may have been true at the time”.

Blackwell also raised the prospect of labelling on food products to make it clearer the methods that were used in the slaughter of the animals. He said that doing so would give consumers a better, more informed choice.

The chief rabbi and the Muslim Council of Britain did not respond to requests for comment.
