England: ‘No evidence was found of breaches to legal requirements or Red Tractor standards.” – watchthe video and decide !

17/8 and 19/8 – we have attempted to make Ocado send us a formal response to the investigations by Animal Equality – see

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2020/08/17/uk-undercover-filming-at-eight-8-moy-park-farms-reveals-hundreds-of-intensive-farmed-birds-suffering-agonising-deaths-each-day/

and until this afternoon (19/8) they claimed they had the wrong e mail address to send info to us.  Hmm, ok, benefit of doubt gives.

We attempted contact by phone with McDonalds, but they only allow e mail questions – so we asked the question as to what they were doing re Moy Park.  We will publish the Mc response if we ever get one; but assume it will be very much in the same context of Ocado below.

Here below is the formal update on Moy Park by Ocado.

As you can see in their statement a Red Tractor spokesman says :

No evidence was found of breaches to legal requirements or Red Tractor standards.

We have also just spoken (a great conversation) with Animal Equality (AE) who are based here in London.  Like us, they view this as typical very good ‘all is well’ yukspeak when actually you can see from the video footage that all is not well.

In consultation with AE, we are publishing e mail and telephone numbers should anyone wish to take this further.  This info is available to anyone who has web access – and as such the info is available to all the public.

Please phone or e mail about this issue if you wish – it is important for the ‘welfare’ of animals in the UK – to show up those who are trying to supress cruelty.

Note:  WE have underlined part of the statement below.

ANIMAL WELFARE – UPDATE ON MOY PARK

 August 12, 2020

At Ocado we carry out regular audits of all our suppliers to ensure the welfare of livestock is managed to the highest standards. Following the allegations raised in March, we worked closely with Moy Park to fully investigate the matter. Independent investigations were also carried out at the time by Red Tractor, Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and Trading Standards.

A Red Tractor spokesperson said: “We take animal welfare very seriously. All the farms in the footage were investigated by us and stakeholder partners including their vet, the APHA and trading standards to ensure there was a comprehensive account of farm practices. No evidence was found of breaches to legal requirements or Red Tractor standards.

At Ocado we are committed to the highest levels of animal welfare and are satisfied that this footage is not reflective of the practices at Moy Park which is supported by evidence from veterinary experts.

All our meat and dairy products meet the Red Tractor farm assurance standards (or the international equivalent) as a minimum. And we know the subject of animal welfare matters significantly to all our customers so we continue to monitor this situation closely.

Solidarity

The more we succeed in remaining in solidarity in the animal rights movement, the stronger we become.
In our fight for the other animals, we are exposed to many dangers.
Only when we stick together and help each other can we stay strong and be successful.

The animals know that.
We should learn from them.

USA: USDA Sued In Federal Court For Failing To Provide “Humane” Handling Of Chickens & Turkeys At Slaughter.

USDA Sued In Federal Court For Failing To Provide “Humane” Handling Of Chickens & Turkeys At Slaughter

https://worldanimalnews.com/usda-sued-in-federal-court-after-shocking-evidence-of-inhumane-handling-of-chickens-turkeys-in-slaughterhouses-was-exposed/

The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and Farm Sanctuary recently sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in federal court for failing to require “humane“ handling of chickens at slaughter, resulting in adulterated (i.e., damaged or contaminated) meat that violates the Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA).

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York by Harvard Law School’s new Animal Law & Policy Clinic, which is representing the plaintiff organizations. It calls on the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to develop regulations governing the handling of chickens, turkeys, and other birds at federally inspected slaughter facilities to address the systematic mistreatment of these animals, which can compromise food safety and meat quality.

“Each year, 9 billion chickens and turkeys are slaughtered in the United States, yet the USDA does virtually nothing to prevent pain and suffering of the birds at slaughter,” said Dena Jones, farm animal program director for AWI in a statement.

Periodic reviews of USDA enforcement records by AWI reveal that, every year, government inspectors document tens of thousands of birds suffering excruciating deaths before they even reach the slaughter line. Thousands of birds die, sometimes in a single incident, from causes that are unacceptable under the PPIA. Birds in slaughter plants were also subjected to intentional acts of cruelty by workers, including being kicked, hit, mutilated, driven over, or dumped onto conveyor belts with visibly broken legs and wings.

Sadly, these reported incidents barely scratch the surface, given that USDA inspectors observe the handling of only a very small percentage of the birds slaughtered. Inspectors at one-third of all poultry plants, in fact, generated no humane handling records whatsoever during a recent three-year period.

As it stands, the industry is able to forego humane handling practices with little, if any, consequences. Currently, the only action USDA inspectors can take when they observe mistreatment of birds is to issue a memorandum describing the incident. Even when establishments engage in repeated or intentional acts, the USDA does nothing to stop it. The USDA is aware that its failure to require humane handling of birds at slaughter results in the adulteration of millions of bird carcasses annually, but the department turns a blind eye.

In one case, nearly 10,000 birds froze to death after being transported and held for at least 22 hours in unprotected trucks during extreme cold at a Butterfield Foods slaughterhouse in Minnesota. In another incident, a Jennie-O slaughter plant in Minnesota was cited 10 times in just four months when birds were seriously injured by malfunctioning equipment that caused large areas of their skin to be torn, resulting in hemorrhaging and muscle damage. The Southern Hens facility in Mississippi was cited 10 times in less than a month because workers were tossing crates with live birds inside.

This widespread abuse of birds at slaughter could be prevented if the USDA adopted humane handling regulations. In 2013, AWI and Farm Sanctuary petitioned the FSIS to use the authority granted to it by Congress to codify chicken handling standards into enforceable regulations.

After a six-year delay, during which time federal inspectors documented more than 1,000 incidents of chicken mistreatment, the FSIS denied the petition. At the same time, it denied a second petition from AWI asking the agency to address the problem of birds being abandoned for extended periods in the holding areas of slaughter plants — often in extreme heat or cold.

Despite the USDA’s own evidence identifying the mistreatment of birds as a cause of adulterated chicken products, the FSIS claimed it had no jurisdiction to enforce humane handling of birds at slaughter, and maintained that the current approach of voluntary compliance is adequate.

“Chickens and other birds suffer egregious cruelty at U.S. slaughterhouses,” said Gene Baur, President and Co-founder of Farm Sanctuary. “The USDA has failed to provide basic humane consideration, allowing callous abuse and irresponsible killing methods that threaten our health and humanity, and are outside the bounds of acceptable conduct in a society that purports to care about compassion.”

The plaintiffs are represented by Katherine Meyer, Director of Harvard’s Animal Law & Policy Clinic, with the assistance of several law students who helped draft the complaint.

Please remember that the best thing we all can do to end the suffering of chickens, turkeys, and other animals is to simply leave them off our plates.

North Koreans ‘forced to give up pet dogs for restaurant meat amid food shortages’.

North Korea

North Koreans ‘forced to give up pet dogs for restaurant meat amid food shortages’

The move by leader Kim Jong Un is apparently aimed at appeasing public discontent amid a dire economic situation, a report says.

https://news.sky.com/story/north-koreans-forced-to-give-up-pet-dogs-for-restaurant-meat-amid-food-shortages-12051212

People in North Korea are reportedly being forced to give up their pet dogs so they can be used as dog meat for restaurants.

The move by the leader Kim Jong Un is thought to be aimed at appeasing rising discontent among the public amid a dire economic situation in the secretive country, including food shortages.

Pet dogs are thought to be owned mostly by the elite and wealthy in the capital Pyongyang and are seen by authorities a symbol of capitalist “decadence”, while ordinary people have pigs and other livestock.

Mr Kim issued a ban on pet ownership in July, denouncing it as “a tainted trend by bourgeois ideology”, according to South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper, citing a source.

The source said: “Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down.”

Some of the dogs are being sent to state-run zoos or sold to dog meat restaurants, the source added.

Dog meat is traditionally popular in China and on the Korean Peninsula, although consumption is on the decline in South Korea.

Pet owners are “cursing Kim Jong Un behind his back,” but there is little they can do, according to the source.

They said: “Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment.”

Pet ownership used to be viewed as western decadence, but attitudes appear to have relaxed when the North hosted the World Festival of Youth and Students in 1989.

After that, the Pyongyang elite started flaunting expensive dogs as status symbols, the Chosun Ilbo reported.

Now the latest move, seen by one defector as more severe than previous clampdowns, is being hailed by authorities as protecting the country against capitalist “decadence”.

Austria: illegal “Halal” slaughter documented in video

The following video is considered a real contemporary document, as well as an undeniable confirmation that the legislature in Austria is on a totally wrong track with its current interpretation and must correct the direction IMMEDIATELY !!!

What ended up in our mailbox is incredible video evidence of a highly illegal act.

When looking at the scenes recorded on tape, we were actually close to tears – and do not even know where to start listing the illegal, highly dramatic misconduct on the part of the farm owner!

The recordings show a slaughter in the very same factory where, as part of our campaign for the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice, the slaughterhouse owner, covered in blood from head to toe, attacked us on the street with wide eyes, completely out of control; only the intervene of those present to hold back the angry man prevented a total escalation.

But what we experienced showed only too clearly which aggressive behavior is concentrated there;

But what exactly is going on in the various sequences?
You can see the butcher fixing a cattle in a shaft box.

Then he makes the throat cut.

Furthermore, a man appears (most likely the slaughterhouse owner) who apparently wants to give the captive bolt anesthetic himself; which apparently leads to a brief controversy with the man who carried out the slaughter (video 1).

And I mean… slaughter without stunning is barbaric animal cruelty!  is not a service to God.

At the same time, we condemn without prejudice the annually thousands of “false stunning” in German slaughterhouses.

Despite decades of protests from animal rights activists and responsible citizens, these crimes continue to be practiced, even though they are unlawful under the law.

We also mistakenly anesthetize in large numbers in the slaughterhouse, and although it is not done consciously or deliberately, it has the same painful consequences as “Halal”.

We also illegally slaughter pregnant, down, injured cows, and pigs.
But we cannot forgive a crime because crimes happen everywhere.

And precisely because we have already been beaten enough by illegally established animal cruelty (illegal pig caste, animal experiments, etc.) – do we also have to allow other horrific, life-despising animal cruelty practices such as “halal”?

It is depressing, annoying, simply terrifying with what false “tolerance” or indifference this society still allows to take place today, in the 21st century, such as archaic tortures.

Belgian slaughterhouse: Amateurs slaughter as they want

We at PETA and other animal rights organizations repeatedly show the daily horror that countless animals are exposed to in the slaughterhouse.

In June, for example, the “Animal Rights” organization published dramatic scenes from a Belgian slaughterhouse that kills up to 650,000 pigs every year.

According to animal rights activists, the pork from “Van Hoornweder” from Torhout in Belgium will also find its way into German supermarkets.

Limping pigs, drowned in the brewing bath

The organization’s video shows animals that arrive at the slaughterhouse already injured and some of which should not have been transported at all.

Limping pigs with organ and tissue incidents, deep wounds, and large abscesses as well as heavily pregnant sows pull themselves out of the transporters and are insufficiently anesthetized on-site with electric forceps.

Others suffer a death throes on the unloading docks or are driven into the waiting bays by violence.
Many animals are not adequately stunned during the killing process.

The animals are sprayed with water so that the intensity of the electric forceps is increased

Again and again, workers use the electric pliers in the wrong places to stun again (!!!), and so the pain is unspeakable for the animals. Some are burned from it.

This also means that some animals are still conscious if their throats are cut or if they soak in the hot scald bath and suffocate in it.

Injured animals are abandoned in the waiting area and have to die a painful death because no one can free them from their suffering.

Some mothers sow spontaneously carry their animals to the waiting area.

And I mean… Veterinarians must be present at the slaughter, this also applies to Belgium!
Very rarely do they deal fairly with animal cruelty, because they do not want to lose their jobs.
Many who have filed criminal complaints at slaughterhouses for disregarding the animal welfare law are transferred to other departments or suspended.

The meat mafia is the strongest all over the world, obviously, the Belgian one has not even taught its servants how a pig must be slaughtered according to the animal welfare law.

Amateurs are at work who slaughter as they please.

40,000 EU officials are employed in the capital Brussels, and no office, no authority, no lazy official is able to deal with this illegal torture, which unqualified butchers practice unpunished in this slaughterhouse.

A shame for Brussels! an obvious and outrageous violation of the animal welfare law that saw its first days in Brussels.

Actually, one of many, as we know them in most slaughterhouses in the EU, because the EU is the strongest agricultural lobby and the best friend of the meat mafia.

Russia: Now Developing Covid 19 Vaccine To Protect Mink On Its Massive Fur Farms .

Fuck everything about this. Fur farm in Russia(post from WTF). : vegan

Russia says it is developing a Covid-19 vaccine for mink and CATS after boasting it has made first treatment for humans

  • A vaccine for animals is being worked on and is expected to be tested in autumn

  • Russia has around 100 fur farms specialising in mink for the large fur industry

  • Vladimir Putin hailed the country’s human vaccine as a world beater

Russia says it is developing a new Covid-19 vaccine to protect mink in its vast fur farms, as well as domestic cats.

Rosselkhoznadzor, Russia’s veterinary watchdog, announced it is working on a vaccine for animals that is expected to be tested in the autumn.

This follows cases of domestic cats with Covid-19 in Moscow and Tyumen.

‘We are working on the creation of a vaccine for animals against the new coronavirus infection,’ said the organisation’s head Sergey Dankvert.

‘The vaccine is needed primarily for mink,’ he said.

‘They quickly transmit the virus to each other.’

A case was reported of a mink infecting a human in the Netherlands.

Russia has around 100 fur farms specialising in mink farming for its large fur industry.

‘People will want to vaccinate pets as well – for example, cats that become infected with a new coronavirus infection,’ he said.

This comes after Russia claims that the West is actively seeking to poach the scientists behind its controversial new Covid-19 vaccine.

The head of Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Professor Alexander Gintsburg, the key scientist behind the human vaccine hailed by Vladimir Putin as a world beater, said in several interviews that the ‘jealous’ West was seeking to ‘buy out’ the top brains in his team.

Any American or European university can only dream of having such researchers,’ he said.

‘And they are seeking to lure them away.

‘But they will not be able to.’

The team that made the Covid-19 vaccination had been together ten years, he said, claiming they were resisting lucrative approaches.

The rush to announce the Sputnik V vaccine – only tested on dozens of people – has been widely criticised in the West, and key figures inside Russia.

Russian health chiefs have been forced to make clear that it cannot be used on this under 18 or over 60 because tests have not been carried out on these age groups.

‘A large amount of additional work is certainly required,’ admitted Gintsburg, who is starting post-registration tests on 30,000 people.

Mass vaccination will start in around one month, it is expected.

But the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s public health watchdog, Anna Popova, made clear that the country will not solely rely Gintsburg’s vaccine announced with such fanfare by the Kremlin last week when the drug was registered.

‘It is absolutely certain that each country, including the Russian Federation, should have several different vaccines. This is what we are doing today,’ she said.
