California Tells SeaWorld to Stop Breeding Killer Whales

SeaWorld has won the battle but lost the war in its bid to enlarge its killer whale enclosure in San Diego.

On Thursday evening, the California Coastal Commission voted unanimously to approve the company’s $100 million “Blue World Project” but with devastating conditions for SeaWorld: It can proceed with the expansion but only if it stops breeding 11 killer whales in San Diego.

The company also would not be allowed to transfer captive whales into or out of San Diego, though it could add up to four orcas if the animals are stranded and rescued from the wild.

Orcas “don’t belong in captivity,” said Commissioner Dayna Bochco.

Anti-captivity activists, who crammed the commission meeting at the Long Beach Convention Center, hailed the decision as the beginning of the end of orca captivity in San Diego.

“I actually didn’t even think of this as a potential outcome, and I’m happier with it than if they had said no,” Kimberly Ventre, an activist and marketing consultant from San Francisco who testified against the expansion, said in an email.

About 650 people—including activists, company officials, actor Pamela Anderson, and concerned citizens on both sides of the controversial project—attended the hearing, with an overflow crowd waiting outside.being to reproduce. SeaWorld has been hit with declining revenues and attendance since the release of Blackfish, a 2013 documentary about mistreatment of marine mammals at its entertainment parks.

“They are thriving because they are reproducing,” testified Hendrik Nollens, senior staff veterinarian at SeaWorld San Diego. “It’s a sign that the animal is living in a socially compatible group and in good health.”

What happens next is not clear. SeaWorld could still build Blue World and abandon its San Diego breeding program, or it could continue breeding and abandon the facility.

“Depriving these social animals of the natural and fundamental right to reproduce is inhumane, and we do not support this condition,” SeaWorld chief executive Joel Manby said in a statement. The company added that “it will review its options.”

“This is a major victory,” said Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute. Rose was one of two orca scientists to testify against the project. The other was Ingrid Visser, founder of New Zealand’s Orca Research Trust.

“As a scientist, I believe it’s important that we separate the business rhetoric from the facts,” Visser told the commissioners. “This new tank does not meet even [the most] basic requirements,” she said. “No tank ever will.” SeaWorld now finds itself in a marine-mammal pickle. Company executives testified during the nearly nine-hour hearing that they would never abandon their captive breeding program because it is essenial for the whales’ well-being.

SeaWorld’s Expansion Gets Approved, but There’s an Epic Catch

by Alicia Graef

This week hundreds of orca advocates turned out for the meeting that would determine the fate of SeaWorld San Diego’s proposed expansion. The advocates voiced their objections and urged the California Coastal Commission to deny its permit application …and they were not disappointed.

SeaWorld’s controversial $100 million Blue World Project was touted as a “first-of-its-kind” environment for captive orcas, which would include nearly doubling the size of its existing facility, in addition to adding an advisory panel of experts and pledging $10 million for research.

While a bigger enclosure might slightly improve the welfare of the 11 orcas currently being held at the park, opponents argued that a tank is still a tank and raised serious concerns that more space would mean more breeding, with SeaWorld potentially increasing its population and negating any benefits more space would provide.

The California Coastal Commission, which has the authority to approve or deny the expansion, received an outpouring of public opposition before this week’s meeting with thousands upon thousands of people coming forward to speak up on behalf of captive orcas – more than 102,000 people signed the Care2 petition  opposing the project.

Despite the massive opposition, last month SeaWorld got some worrying support in the form of a staff report from the commission recommending the expansion project be approved.

Yesterday the commission met in front of a huge crowd to decide the final outcome. Orca experts including Dr. Ingrid Visser and Dr. Naomi Rose, along former SeaWorld trainer John Hargrove and representatives from several animal advocacy organizations including Peta, the Earth Island Institute, Sea Shepherd and the Animal Legal Defense Fund, among many others and members of the public, were present to ask the commission not to allow SeaWorld to expand.

After hearing hours of testimony, the commission ultimately voted unanimously to approve the expansion, but with a huge catch.

At the end Commissioner Dayna Bochco introduced an amendment that added the condition that SeaWorld would end all captive breeding, sale, trade and transfer of the orcas in its care.

Now SeaWorld can go ahead with the project, but if it does, it will mean the 11 orcas currently at its park will be the last it ever has.

While SeaWorld said in a statement it’s disappointed by the vote and is considering its options, along with ironically saying denying them the “right” to breed is “inhumane,” animal advocates are celebrating this outcome as a huge victory in the fight to end orca captivity.

ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells, said in a statement:

SeaWorld’s business is circling the drain as an enlightened

China: Help PETA With Their ‘Stop Angora’ Campaigning – Take Action Now !

Please support PETA with this very important campaign – China again !!

http://headlines.peta.org/humane-angora-farms-china-audit/?utm_campaign=Angora%20Investigation%2010122015&utm_source=PETA%20E-Mail&utm_medium=Alert#takeaction

PETA visited angora farms in China that were deemed “humane” by third-party auditors, and we confirmed with our own eyes that live rabbits’ fur is ripped out of their skin and they’re forced to live in horrendous conditions, despite assurances to the contrary.

On these farms, most rabbits were suffering from a severe skin irritation, and in many cases the animals weren’t offered any treatment for serious and chronic infections, sores, malnutrition, and respiratory distress.

Some rabbits were so sick and weak that they were lying in their own waste, motionless or panting. This is yet another example showing that the auditing system is a farce that protects suppliers and retailers rather than animals, regardless of “standards” that might be in place.

There is no way to mass-produce angora humanely. Because of the cruelty involved, more than 110 top retailers have banned angora, including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Ann Inc., H&M, and Inditex.

Yet Free People, which is owned by Urban Outfitters, continues to sell cruel angora wool.

Please take a moment to urge Free People to stop selling angora wool immediately.

They were the screams heard around the world. Undercover footage shot by PETA Asia revealed extreme yet routine cruelty to angora rabbits, whose long, soft fur is often used in sweaters and accessories. See the footage for yourself: Link above.

Is it possible that no one out of the thousands of friends I have on Facebook is able to donate anything towards the cost of cat food? Do the kitties deserve to starve just because we are not screaming, wailing and pleading for help two times a day?

3

Should we talk about and maybe even consider closing the shelter and turning all of the cats back out into the streets, after years of heartily fighting for them and working way beyond our limits, as they are obviously totally unimportant to people and not even worth thinking about or saving? Is there anyone out there who really cares?

4
Without some sort of assistance soon, everything we’ve campaigned and fought so hard for here could quickly be lost. Even the smallest donations help, they add up and it’s better than nothing at all.

5

Please help if you can, even sharing our plight with others helps out, you never know who’s out there that would like to get involved and see these kitties remain safe and healthy in the only place that’s shown them caring and love.

6

You can donate through PayPal, our YouCaring fundraising page or our project on betterplace.org and please bear in mind that we sincerely appreciate all of the help we get, even when our thank you notes are late, which they usually are.

7

We are deeply grateful to all of our friends and donors who have been supporting our work so unselfishly for years now and all of us here genuinely thank each and every one of you for your unlimited kindness with every ounce of our beings! Read more on my blog:

Dear all

The financial interest, ignorance, and corruption of the officials in Romania regarding animal rights and the constant abuse of animals make a real change almost impossible. Moreover, they completely ignore a more humane and comprehensive approach to the management of stray dogs. Therefore, our appeals to EU institutions by asking them to put real and official pressure upon Romanian authorities in any way whatsoever are extremely important!

Ever since the beginning of summer I made several requests to the European Parliament for the opportunity to give a presentation and make EP (and other EU institutions) conscious of the reality in Romania (and in other Member States) regarding the stray animals. Finally, more than I had hoped, was obtained: a presentation about the Stray dog situation in Romania and a section for Stray dogs in Romania within the Intergroup on the Welfare & Conservation of Animals in the European Parliament.

Therefore, on 8th October, at European Parliament, in Strasbourg, I will present “Current Dog Management Practices in Romania. Towards a Sustainable and Humane Solution?” that will include:

  • The reality in the public dog shelters (versus the legal framework)

  • The stray dog business – inefficiency, corruption/actions of authorities responsible with the control and enforcing of animal legislation

  • Inefficiency of stray dog management by mass killing

  • The effects of Romanian legislative provisions on: Rabies control and the stray dog population

  • Animal abuses as a psychological stress factor

  • Call for EU control/interventions on Romanian officials for a humane, correct, and effective way of stray animal management

  • Call for European legislation for stray animal management that considers and reflects the social interest, ethical values and principles of the European civilization

On October 14th I will be able to inform you how the event was received!

In case you have special concerns regarding this issue, please feel free to send them to me until Thursday evening – as I am leaving Romania earlier because after October 3th I have some meetings in Germany, too.

Thank you!

All the best

Oktober.

Vielen Dank!

Alles Gute,

Carmen ARSENE

As anti animal transport campaigners, we find Article 26 (MEP’s call …) of special interest.  Maybe at long last someone at the EU is beginning to realise that despite good EU regulations on paper for animals being transported; the reality is far from what is perceived to happen.  We welcome anything that either reduces or abolishes long distance animal transport in the EU.

Please take a look at Article 26 and see what is being said !
