Dear All

I am Jelena Tinska an actress in my country, Serbia. I cannot afford to help unhappy dogs and other animals financially as they would deserve, without cruel killings and torture that happens to them in this country and which is unfortunately their destiny. But since I work in media and TV, I have become “an extended arm in the media ” to the associations that fight for the wellbeing of the animals. I have my own weekly talk show ZEITGEIST, and also write for newspapers, and through those two types of media I fight for their well being the only way I can. I live in Novi Sad, where the situation is the same as in Belgrade.

I am not asking you anything from you. Nothing materialistic. But I ask you, based on the documentation that I have emailed you before in French, to please make EVERYONE you can aware, and from whom it depends if Serbia will join the EU, to make them aware of everything you know. And also to the Serbian government on the following email addresses I am writing with regard to the numerous e mails that I personally have had from animal welfare organisations in Serbia relating to animal cruelty there. It comes at a time in which you are declaring that “ the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia in Brussels will consolidate the results achieved so far and advance the Justice and Home Affairs part of the Agreement”.

I wish to inform you of one area in Serbia where there has been and still is a complete lack of action on the part of the Serbian authorities responsible. I ask please that this letter be registered as a Formal Complaint to the EU regarding animal welfare atrocities in Serbia. I request written confirmation of this; thank you.

There have been very many reports circulating in Europe that the Serbian Authorities are not taking the actions that they should to ensure the proper treatment, care and control of animals within Serbia, a country hoping to obtain membership of the EU within the next two years. During 2006 we in the United Kingdom were supplied with many reports of Dogs (Canines) being rounded up, held and finally slaughtered in many Serbian towns/cities. Witnesses from these Serbian welfare organisations were able first hand to document the methods and procedures associated with street animal control by many Serbian authorities which appear to have been contracted to do the killings, and possibly using EU Enlargement monies given by the EU to do this.

Below is a sample of the reports we have obtained from welfare organisations in Serbia:

In one example; a visit to SMEDEREVO was undertaken on Wednesday 27th September. Welfare campaigners noted and witnessed several street Dogs which had been rounded up and were now being kept at the local pound. Many photographs of these dogs were taken, samples of which are provided in this letter for your review. We know that the Garbage collection for the city of Smederevo is undertaken by a public organisation called “KOMUNALAC”; and also that the dogcatchers (Shinters) employed by them are attempting to keep their dog killing secret. We have also obtained documentation showing a Report produced by the Veterinary Inspector of Smederevo as a result of a visit made by welfare campaigners on Friday 29th September. We note from the report that the entire pound was declared empty of dogs. Although we find it very hard to accept and do not consider it to be at all possible, we state that there may be the very un-probable possibility that all of the dogs in the pound were re-homed between Wednesday 27th, the day of the initial visit, and Friday 29th, the date of the veterinary report.

We are 100% certain that all the dogs held in the local pound during the dates detailed were subsequently killed by the local authorities. Despite the welfare organisations having asked the authorities mentioned to provide information of the addresses of the homes to which these dogs were allegedly sent for their re-homing, as it was considered a part of the conclusion to this welfare investigation, no information whatsoever has been provided by the authorities to prove that dogs had been re-homed from the pound in Smederevo.

Further, we have photographs (shown below) taken at the Garbage (rubbish) dump at Smedervo which were taken on 29th September; the exact date when the dogs from the pound were allegedly re-homed by the authorities. We are certain that the dogs shown in these photographs are the same dogs which were held in the pound during this period, and we are reliably informed by local monitors that prior to their killing, the dogs held in the local pound were kept in a very small enclosure, approximately 1.5 metres x 1.5 metres, and which was used as the facility to hold some 30 dogs !.

We understand also that neither food or water was provided to any of the animals during their time at this enclosure pound, a policy which we find to be disgusting. We are led to understand that the killing of the Smedervo dogs during late September 2006 was undertaken by the organisation “JKP Komunalac” , the City Rubbish contractor/organisation, and that a money transfer from the City Budget to the Bank exists to show that payment of the killings undertaken during September exist. Selected photographs from some of the very many we now have on file as evidence of the conditions/disposal processes on the rubbish dump at Smedervo are shown below.

Other towns/cities which we have been provided with similar information to the above incidents include: OVCA /belong to ORCA/– North of Belgrade. We were informed that the veterinary here has destroyed between 6000 and 7,200 dogs. We have very strong concerns that facilities at this town are always made unavailable to the public and that the facility is protected by monitoring cameras on the outside. We have been informed that if anyone who has lost a pet goes to the facility to try and find their dog, they are not allowed in and are asked to give a description of their animal. People are usually shown pictures of dogs in the facility on a monitor but always never end up being re-united with their own animal. They are always informed that their dog is not at the facility.

We suggest that the animals in all cases have been destroyed.

NOVI SAD – North West of Belgrade. Within the garbage collection and handling facility is a collection of iron cages measuring 1 metre square into which dogs are placed. Sometimes the dogcatchers (Shinters) place the dogs they have captured into the cages where they are held until killed; sometimes they are killed immediately after their capture. The dogs are usually killed by the injection of T-61 into their lungs. Once they have been killed, the bodies of the dogs are moved to the garbage dump facility (see photographs above) where their bodies are usually covered by the placement of at least one layer of rubbish in order to hide the killings that have taken place.

PANCEVO – North-East of Belgrade; near to OVCA detailed above. The Public organisation which handles garbage for this region is called “Higijena”, and we have witnessed some twenty (20) building boxes here for the holding of dogs collected in the region. We are informed that dogs should be held for at least seven (7) days but often they are killed in much shorter times, again by the injection of T-61 into their lungs. The chief of the dogcatchers who travel around the region is one Mr. Vladimir Zec, a man who appears to hold a diploma from the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) for his ‘Humane’ methods of dog catching and control’. The organisation “Higijena” appear to use this diploma as an alibi for the work which is done on dogs and which is paid for out of the city budge; possibly EU Enlargement money ?. In summary, “Higijena” appear to be using the reputation of an animal welfare organisation (WSPA) as a means for being contracted to kill animals; possibly with money given by the EU !

KULA – Some kilometres out of the city, the Public Veterinary Station has a facility JVS ‘KULA’ into which they place dogs after capture. When between 5 and 15 dogs have been captured, they are killed by the veterinarian. We know from documentation obtained by Serbian welfare organisations that the veterinarian, Mrs. Danijela Kozomora, claims that all of the 686 dogs destroyed during six months in 2006 had been declared as “Healthy”. This completely goes against what is declared by Mrs. Gordana Milosevic-Stojanovic (the Deputy Public Prosecutor of Serbia) who seems to declare that “only dogs with incurable illnesses are destroyed”. Something is very wrong. Under the Freedom of Information legislation which exists in Serbia and with information supplied from Serbian welfare campaigners, we have had access to, and still have photocopies of the documentation of veterinary inspectors reports for every one of the 686 dogs mentioned, and in every single report the destroyed animals are detailed as ‘healthy’ by the veterinarian.

SVILAJNAC – South-East of Belgrade. The Public contractor/organisation which handles garbage for this region is called “Morava”, and here again welfare monitors have witnessed dogs being held for killing (with both T-61 and the use of pitchforks and mallets)in holding cages as shown in the photograph below. One dogcatcher has informed the welfare organisations that he would want them to attempt to stop the killing of the dogs as he can no longer stand the terrible nightmares that he suffers as a result of witnessing dogs being killed with the mallets. We find this method of destroying living and healthy creatures completely unacceptable, regardless of where it happens. We have very strong reservations also about the methods which were employed for the killing of these “Stray Animals”. Sources have informed us that the dogs were killed by a variety of procedures including stabbing with Pitchforks, clubbing to death with mallets; the use of the drug T-61 and also the use of Nuvan, Kreozan-poisons. We would like to make it clear that the use of drug T-61 has NOT been considered an acceptable euthanasia drug in the United States of America since 1988, when it was withdrawn from manufacture, and also not accepted in Canada since 1994.

The American Veterinary Medical Association lists T-61 use as “a method (of killing) which should only be used under specific conditions unlikely to prevail in dog pounds anywhere”. Both T-61 and Kreozan cause death by suffocation. Sources inform us that for humans, overexposure to Nuvan causes acute depression which is evidenced by headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, excessive sweating, salivation, blurred vision, tightness in chest, weakness, muscle twitching and confusion. In extreme cases, unconsciousness, convulsions, severe respiratory depression and eventual death may occur.

Thus we ask you sir to please inform us if any Serbian personnel (Shinters) involved with the use of this agent have been made aware through health and safety legislation of its potentially lethal consequences. We know that it is used to kill dogs, it can also kill humans who are unaware of its dangers.

Why are Nuvan, Kreozan and T-61 still being used by authorities to kill dogs in Serbia in September 2006 when they are not being used in other civilised countries such as the USA and Canada ?

Evidence we have obtained via Serbian welfare organisation investigations show the huge numbers of animals that have been killed (destroyed by Euthanasia) over recent years. This evidence is shown in the following figure and is summarised in the accompanying Table. Summary of data shown in the above figure: YEAR CATCH (Dogs and Cats) ANIMALS KILLED ANIMALS BOUGHT ANIMALS IN SHELTER

2002 Dogs: 3032 Cats: 81 Dogs: 2991 Cats: 79 Dogs: 31 Cats: 2 Dogs: 18

2003 Dogs: 2727 Cats: 51 Dogs: 2734 Cats: 51 Dogs: 11 Cats: 0 Dogs: 10 Cats: 0

2004 Dogs: 3185 Cats: 88 Dogs: 3185 Cats: 88 Dogs: 0 Cats: 0 Dogs: 0 Cats: 0

From documentation we have been provided with and which is shown in the following figures, it can be clearly stated that 90% of the Budget money (possibly EU Enlargement donated money ?) allocated for animal welfare issues, for example, to Belgrade, will be spent on the killing of animals, and a mere 10% on the sterilization of homeless animals for the period 1st January to August 2006.

Of 5042 Dogs collected in Belgrade during this period, 4510 were killed and a mere 1389kg of food purchased and supplied for the animals. This data is ‘Official’ figures from a report by the Director of JVS “Belgrade” – Ovãa, the facility where the dogs are collected and then killed.

We understand from Serbian animal welfare organisations that we have corresponded on this issue with, that the Serbian authorities have been asked to stop the killings, to undertake sterilization of captured animals and to provide the same with marker ‘idents’ to show that they have been sterilized and thus should not be killed. We have been informed that the authorities have shown no interest in the requests of the welfare organisations and only wish to continue with a policy of killing.

We are hearing that at the moment animals which have been sterilised and provided with an ident are still being rounded up and destroyed – this is completely unacceptable ! Despite the new Serbian laws associated with Veterinary care: Veterinary Legislation, Article 46 refers, valid from 2nd November 2005, and which requires care for homeless dogs and cats, as well as the new Serbian Criminal Code: Article 269 Paragraph 2 of the which provides punishment of up to three years imprisonment for anyone who inflicts cruelty or killing on animals, we know that despite charges in the International Courts in Strasbourg – Case Number 1052/07 being brought by welfare organisations, the Public Attorney General of Serbia does nothing to conform with the requirements of the law and undertake their responsibilities.

Meetings between welfare organizations and the Public Attorney General of Serbia on 13th April and 14th August 2006 resulted in nothing being done to provide better protection for the street dogs and cats of Serbia.

For this reason now we are considering that the welfare organizations of Serbia should have our support to bring Criminal charges to the International Criminal Court at The Hague, because in summary, Serbian authorities are not complying with Serbian legislation and thus should be prosecuted for not doing so.

It should be made very clear that we know only two animal welfare organisations have to date attempted to bring criminal charges against the mass killing of animals. Sources have informed us that these organisations themselves have now come under attack from the Serbian authorities who seem intent on ultimately destroying these (animal welfare) organisations.

The aim of the authorities; which will never happen before the issue goes to court, appears to be to prevent the animal welfare organisations from ever being able to do further welfare work in Serbia. We understand that Mayors from some towns and cities are attempting to bring criminal charges against the welfare organisations mentioned above. Welfare organisations named “Subotica”, in Subotica, and “Durdevo” in Zrenjanin,”ORCA” in Belgrade, appear to be giving their support to the policy of the “New Strategy” which involves the mass killing of animals.

It is our knowledge that by having this ‘support’ of certain welfare organisations, many of the Serbian authorities are able to undertake their mass killings because they are appearing to declare that the killings have the approval of the welfare organisations.

The Public firm “Higijena” from Pancevo has a representative named Mr. Vladimir Zec, who travels by car all over Serbia collecting dogs and returning them to Pancevo for mass killing. Despite current laws on Veterinary and Criminal codes as given above, we know that at least four (4) employees of “Higijena” have in very recent times been operating in regions including Svilajnacs; –

Serbia does not treat its animals well despite the fantastic efforts and work undertaken by Serbian animal welfare organisations.

Thank you for your time and review of our dossier on this very important issue.

Re: Amendment 205/ Labelling

Dear Sir/ Madam

I was disappointed to hear that MEP’s/ EU legislators have decided to scrap legislation demanding that all meat from ritually slaughtered animals be clearly identified.

This decision is ignoring public opinion, denying the basic human rights of those who do not wish to participate in animal sacrifice and favouring the financial/ superstitious motives of small sections of religious communities over the wishes of the general population.

I also believe that the lack of clear labelling is not only a breach of Article 9 of the Human Rights Act 1998 but breaking the law with regards to the legal waver that stipulates that halal and kosher slaughter can be conducted within EU states.

This legal opt-out was provided to provide religious communities access to meat slaughtered during rites or sacrificial ceremonies. As this meat is now being sold in huge quantities by members of these religions to the wider citizenship (it is estimated that over one quarter of all meat sold in the UK is now from halal slaughter: Source; BBC) then the legislation governing this situation is no longer fit for purpose.

I ask that you please provide me with full details of your involvement in this Act, the scrapping of the section relation to ritual slaughter and whether you will now be demanding that these items be labelled by law.

Yours faithfully

European Ministers have dropped plans to ensure that halal and kosher meat from animals slaughtered without pre-stunning is accurately labelled.

Earlier this year MEPs voted in favour of German MEP Renate Sommer’s proposed amendment to draft legislation on food labelling which would mean that meat and meat products from ritually slaughtered animals must carry the label “Meat from slaughter without stunning”.

However, the European Council of Ministers today approved a draft of new food information regulation that did not include amendment 205.

The agreement reached today falls short of demands made by MEPs when they agreed their position on the directive in June.

Renate Sommer said that she was “disappointed” by the agreement, calling it a “sloppy draft” that neglected important details.

The latest move to drop the proposal follows a Europe-wide lobbying campaign by the Jewish food lobby group Shechita UK, which has targeted European Ministers representing their various governments at the Council of Ministers.

Shechita UK has argued that unless meat from religiously slaughtered animals is allowed to slip into the general market covertly, this meat will become commercially unviable. Electrical pre-stunning is not allowed under strict Jewish traditions, whereas the practice is acceptable to many British Muslims.

The NSS has been pressing the UK Government to support the amendment, arguing that where religious exemptions have been made to animal welfare regulations, no more animals should be slaughtered under the exemptions than is necessary for the religious market. Furthermore, consumers are entitled to be informed if meat is from an animal slaughtered without stunning. The current absence of labelling deprives consumers of basic information and consequently artificially fuels the demand for meat from slaughter without stunning.

In a letter to the NSS just weeks before the latest move, Jim Paice MP, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food, signalled the UK Government’s intention to oppose the labelling amendment saying that he had recently met with Shechita UK to help him “understand the concerns driving their opposition to labelling”.

Stephen Evans, National Secular Society Campaigns Officer, said: “Keeping the public in ignorance so they carry on subsidising a slaughter method which they do not approve of is simply indefensible. While we’re naturally disappointed that this amendment has fallen, this is far from the end of the campaign to ensure meat from religiously slaughtered animals is labelled. We are anticipating European Commission proposals on welfare labelling in 2011 and we will be ensuring that the Government are well aware of our views – which we believe are supported by the overwhelming majority of the British public.”

Next year, the Government will also be consulting on the implementation of regulations on the protection of animals at the time of killing, which will provide a further opportunity to question the exemptions from animal welfare legislation afforded to religious groups.

————————————————————————–

You’ll no doubt have seen recent media coverage concerning the rapidly rising amount of halal meat being sold to mostly unaware consumers.

Scotland for Animals have been campaigning for a complete ban on halal and kosher slaughter for some years now. Despite obstruction from authorities and bodies such as Trading Standards and the Food Standards Agency, not to mention blanket reluctance from politicians to even discuss the issue we have continued to press hard for clear labelling of all ritual slaughter products by law.

Animals already suffer horrendously in our abattoirs but we now see a situation where more and more slaughtering plants are switching to killing animals without prior stunning or being subjected to the useless “Low Amperage Stun-to-Stun” technique (see http://www.scotlandforanimals.org/religiousslaughter.html for details). This is making a terrible situation far worse and is slowly making laws designed to minimise animal suffering not worth the paper they’re written on.

The level of  halal meat being sold to unsuspecting consumers in the UK has now reached a ridiculous level. Not only do we now see halal meat sold in all the major supermarkets and restaurants, takeaways, bars, etc. but being served without warning in our Parliaments, schools and other public institutions.

According to the BBC halal meat now accounts for over a quarter of all meat sold across Britain.

Those who carry out religious slaughter cite their “human rights” to torture animals in the name of god, we’re now demanding that those of us who want to see animals free from pain and fear have our human rights protected by law too.

Will you stand with us?

Contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission and ask for action to ensure people know when they’re being sold meat sourced from sacrificial ceremonies. Jewish and Muslim groups have long resisted any attempt to label these products as they know that when most consumers are aware of the circumstances in which their meat was produced they would boycott halal and kosher stockists. Ritual slaughter’s a multi-million pound industry which would suffer serious financial damage as a result.

See below sample email, please feel free to personalise. Courtesy copies go to Equalities Ministers Theresa May/ Lynne Featherstone, DEFRA Minister Caroline Spelman and Agriculture Minister Jim Paice. Also send a copy to your MP, go to www.writetothem.com and follow the instructions.

Henry Grunwald QC, chairman of Shechita UK who lobby to keep religious slaughter legal recently admitted that compulsory labelling “will have a significant impact on the kosher meat industry across Europe.  Halal lobbyists have also been quoted as claiming that compulsory labelling “would effectively act as a barrier to trade” and would  “create an unnecessary layer of regulatory expense”*

Let’s make this the turning point.  Together we can start to pull the rug from under the ritual slaughter business.

Re: Ritual Slaughter/ Human Rights Act

FAO Trevor Phillips

CC: Lynne Featherstone MP, Caroline Spelman MP, Theresa may MP, Jim Paice MP

Dear Mr Phillips

I am alarmed to discover the widespread sale of ritual slaughter products (halal/ kosher) mostly without labelling or advertisement.

By purchasing these products without knowledge that they are such I am being forced to participate in and fund religious ritual without my consent. As i wish to neither fund nor participate in these religious rituals at any stage including point of sale I believe this to be a breach of my rights under Article 9 of the Human Rights Act 1998.

As religious communities in the UK have secured a legal exemption in order to carry out these acts which I find deeply offensive I feel that there should be a stipulation that foods sourced in this way should be clearly advertised and labelled. As these goods are on sale to the general population and not just the communities concerned this would protect my and everyone else’s right not to purchase these products or from any premises or firms which stock them.

It is reasonable that the public should be able to expect that any products on general sale have not been sourced via religious ceremony/ ritual sacrifice unless explicitly stated.

I would be grateful if you could please take action now with regards to this matter. I look forward to your reply with details of how you intend to address this breach of the law.

I have forwarded a copy of this email to my MP and Scotland for Animals.

To whom it may concern,

I am currently a resident of France, just outside of Paris. A co-worker of mine has recently witnessed a German Shepherd across from her apartment being beaten. She witnessed it one time and heard it on other several locations. The second time she witnessed it she was able to catch it on a video. She has posted the video on facebook and youtube under ‘Dog Attacked Next to Disneyland.’ –

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5DsVJuA2QA

There is no German Shepherd rescue in France, the animal control is slow-acting, and the police are taking no action. The video is very disturbing and it is obvious that it needs help. If there is any help or advice your organization can offer it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact as soon as possible by email or phone. I would be so appreciative it there there was also any connection your group has to make this more public on a news program to gain awareness.
Thank you,

Queen guitarist Brian May on helping animals

WHY I HAVE TO SPEAK FOR THE ANIMALS

Sunday December 5,2010

By Dr Brian May

SOMEONE asked me recently what I wanted to be remembered for. We Will Rock You? Playing atop Buckingham Palace?

I said, given the choice, I’d rather be remembered for hastening the end of cruelty to animals and sowing the seeds for true respect in the way we treat all creatures.

Seems like a radical change of career for me, doesn’t it? My love of music is unshakeable, along with a love of Astrophysics, Stereoscopy, and Photoshop, but my love of animals has led me to a place I would rather not have to be, where I put my guitar down, and try to give animals a voice.

So daily I make myself very unpopular with various people, who still believe animals were put on Earth to be used and abused at will by humans.

Human is the name we give ourselves, and there is an adjective derived from it, implying compassion, sensibility, fairness: the word “humane”.

Throughout history man has tried to justify his behaviour towards fellow man and other animals.

In the Age of Enlightenment, he was justifying burning women at the stake because they had the devil in them.

Writing the US constitution for the Land of the Free, he was justifying keeping slaves, because “they were not the same as us”, and society would collapse without slavery. Men have justified so many appalling behaviours: torturing political prisoners, degradation of women, abuse of children, victimisation of minorities, near eradication of native peoples.

These hideous abuses are looked back on with shame. How did we ever imagine that because a human looked different, he didn’t have feelings, the right to freedom, food, respect and equal opportunities?

Another revolution is happening now. We have begun to realise other creatures on this planet have just as much right to live, breathe and enjoy their time as we do.
But we are at the primitive beginnings of this realisation.

As I write, millions of animals are suffering at the hands of humans.
Animal farming (read “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer) involves the abuse of millions of creatures every day that have senses and feelings similar to ours.

Ian Redmond OBE, the world-famous zoologist, says that a generation ago, any biologist attributing “maternal feelings and behaviour” to a mother monkey cuddling her offspring would be accused of anthropomorphism and never taken seriously as a scientist again.

This is no longer the case. Recent mapping of genomes has revealed the uncanny similarity of the human make-up to that of primates and only a little less closely to mammals such as mice and rats.

It is now accepted that the idea “humans think and behave rationally, but animals act just on instinct” is unsupportable.

In 2004, after 100 years of work from animal-caring people, a Hunting Act was passed in this country banning the cowardly and despicable “sport” of fox-hunting along with hare-coursing, and stag hunting with packs of dogs.  Recently we saw public outrage at the senseless killing of just one magnificent stag simply for its antlers.

But this is merely the tip of a huge iceberg: millions of highly intelligent creatures, more intelligent than the cats and dogs this nation loves so much, are being abused in Britain at this minute.

Pigs, cows, lambs are bred purely as commodities, ready for the brutal slaughterhouse.
Chickens are bred in appalling battery conditions without the mercy of a decent life or a decent death.

All farmed animals are now species that have been created by man to fulfill demand for more productivity and more more money with no regard for their welfare.

Those turkeys, which will be slaughtered in their cartloads this Christmas, could never even walk.

Other birds are bred in battery conditions, released for a pitifully short life, and shot at with shotguns, for fun.

Millions of primates, who are our closest relatives, are experimented on, kept in pitiful cages in laboratories, the concentration camps we call “humane”.

And we have a government that wants to bring back fox-hunting (claiming it’s humane, calling for “proof” that foxes suffer pain).
It is also attempting to license farmers to kill badgers on their land in a futile attempt to control Bovine TB with a “science-based” cull, which all scientific evidence says will fail.

Morally? It’s all utterly indefensible. And it’s still legal to use wild animals in circuses. It all needs to change.

Attitudes are changing, the light is dawning, but we need to call clearly for what we want.  For justice for animals.

Message from Morrissey

4 December 2010

Message from Morrissey.

I would like to, if I may, offer support to Johnny Marr who has spoken out to the media this week against David Cameron. To those who have expressed concern over Johnny’s words in view of the fact that David Cameron has pledged immense allegiance to the music of the Smiths, I would like to try to explain why I think Johnny is right not to be flattered.

It is true that music is a universal language – the ONLY universal language, and belongs to all, one way or another. However, with fitting grimness I must report that David Cameron hunts and shoots and kills stags – apparently for pleasure. It was not for such people that either “Meat is Murder” or “The Queen is Dead” were recorded; in fact, they were made as a reaction against such violence.

I recall some years ago a party political broadcast on behalf of the Conservative Party where David Cameron spoke directly to camera as an LP copy of “The Queen is Dead” proudly displayed itself on the wall behind his right shoulder. It is, of course, a fantastic thrill when the music you make is acknowledged by virtually anyone at all. But David Cameron is not just anyone. Some months ago, as the long-beaked amongst you might recall, I was due to appear on the Andrew Marr Show alongside David Cameron, and however much I worship the words of Andrew Marr, I could not go through with the invitation.

This was because I knew, then, that David wanted to repeal the Hunting Act, which would mean the brutal killing of foxes, hares, deer, badgers, otters – just about anything that moves.
Often the excuse of ‘culling’ is tagged on to the argument of legalized killing of beings, yet as we all know, motorized vehicles manage the business of ‘culling’ foxes and badgers quite well without messengers of death on horseback. Wildlife (that is, freelife) has its own methods of balancing nature – foxes and owls and birds of prey tending to help themselves to whatever crosses their path.

The countryside, quite remarkably, does not need the Hunting Act to be repealed. You would need to be mindless to believe that it does. People who hunt are under delusions of possession and property and divine right, and their debasement of human standards is always evident in their outrage at ever being questioned about their activities. Meanwhile, the Hunt Saboteurs (who are always termed ‘extremists’ by the Daily Bra – as if opposing brutal killing is an extreme emotion) are themselves symbols of freedom. Hunt Saboteurs do not kill. High Court judges on horseback, dressed in blood-red outfits, are the ones who kill.

As we all know, law in England is applied with partiality: the police are quick to nab the hunt saboteurs, but slow to catch up with the very visible Cheltenham Hunt. The hunt saboteurs are jailed for up to 12 years (for what? attempting to prevent mindless violence?), whereas the unmanly reflex of fox hunting receives a rap on the knuckles (Odious Ferry.)

I beg you to notice the unbearable dimension of sorrow that David Cameron is attempting to inflict upon British wildlife/freelife (an animal is not ‘wild’ simply because it is uncaged.) If you can find the time, would you please write to the MP of your choice – if you can think of one that you half-trust – at The House of Commons, St Margaret’s Street, London SW1P, urging them to vote against the repeal. It is not the hunt saboteurs who menace social order, but the Hunters themselves, and the moral climate of 2010 seeping into 2011 surely tells all intelligent people that the key to the extent of any person’s humanity is in their relationship to – and protection of – animals. Politicians only care about the public as electorate, and once the victory vote has been seized there is no place for debate between The Prime Minister and the people who elected him. (I cannot use the him/her term in relation to a Prime Minister because, as we all know, Margaret Thatcher has ensured that a female Prime Minister would never again be risked.) However, please do not feel powerless against the views of politicians or, for that matter, so-called royalty, because it is they who are powerless against the collective spirit of the British people. I mention so-called royalty because Prince William – who has never made the faintest imprint on the English soul, is also a hunter of deer, as is his fiasco (fiancée) Kate Middleton.

Although William and Kate are so dull as people that it is actually impossible to discuss them, it is worth recalling Prince Harry’s thumbs-up as he sat beside a giant water buffalo, cowardly shot from a safe distance by the ignoble Prince some years back. Intellectually, it is true that the so-called Royal Family are not worth very much when it comes to moral standards. The Queen annually signs-off on the terrorizing slaughter of adult Canadian brown bears in order that her Guards are supplied with fancy hats. The babies of the adult bears who witness their own mothers’ slaughter, are left to die slowly, and alone. The sober and bitter truth is that the Queen of England is indifferent to this barbarism, for she has never once expressed concern by it (although, let us speak quite plainly, there is not one person in the whole of England who can remember or repeat a single word ever spoken by the Queen, such is her command of communication.)

I apologize very deeply for my support over the years for the group Roxy Music. I had no idea until very recently that their singer Bryan Ferret is also an avid hunter, and is now managed by his Lord of the Hunt son, Odious Ferry.

Some are brutally indifferent to the feelings of animals. Many are not. Politically, I long for the day when it is finally acknowledged in the House of Lords that the indigestible business of the meat industry corrupts and destroys the planet more than any other profit organization. We continually hear of disappearing rainforests but the cause is never explained, for this would then force concerned world leaders to ‘cull’ meat production, and rather the world sizzle than it be admitted that the meat industry is the root of climate change. It was Sir Paul McCartney who said: “Save the planet – stop eating animals.” It is the genius of Stella McCartney who has produced footwear made entirely of non-animal materials. As a glowing owner of such shoes, I can confirm to anyone interested that they appear – even on detailed examination – to be no different to shoes made from animals.

Refusing to eat animals remains a political gesture. The world apparently loves the simple, whether it be professional killers such as Jamie Horrible, or the dim-witted and good-natured David Peckham, both as certain of knighthoods as their mediocrity is bona-fide. David Peckham is so dull that he is yet to master his first words.

However, people like me exist, also, and by close of this piece I return to the opening issue of David Cameron and I remind him that the world loves a man who loves to listen. But we can’t believe what you say when we know what you do.

MORRISSEY.

Australia: Please Take Action to Stop the Government Exporting Live Animals Halfway Round the World to then Face a Barbaric Death.

“The most difficult investigation I have ever conducted…”

I hope you were able to view the results of our seventh investigation into the Live Export Industry on the 7.30 Report last night (if not, click here to watch it online).

Tragically, what the ABC aired was merely a glimpse of what my co-investigator and I witnessed in the Middle East during the Festival of Sacrifice last month — Australian animals bound with wire, dragged, and shoved into car boots before being brutally killed in the streets.

Some 22 million sheep have been exported to Kuwait over the past 20 years. To visit this country again and witness even more brutal treatment of animals on this occasion was near soul destroying. As an investigator unable to intervene, all I can do is make a commitment to them that their suffering will not be in vain; that we will do everything in our power to ensure that their suffering will heighten calls for live export to end.

Change is desperately needed in the Middle East — and this will not occur whilst a country such as Australia sets an example that it is acceptable to send animals halfway around the world only to be slaughtered. The damaging message that Australia’s live export industry sets by its mere existence is that animals are nothing more than chattels to be traded and slaughtered for profit.

Australian animals need live export to end, but so do all animals in the Middle East. They need a nation to set an example that will inspire change — that will send a clear message to the region that animals and their welfare matters.

Please help us to call upon our government to end the live export trade.

By sending a quick, polite message to our Prime Minister and Agriculture minister, you will show that Australians want this cruel trade to end. I’ve included their contact details above. Your letter or e-mail need only be very brief. Your help today truly can make a huge difference.

Thank you for helping me to be a voice for these animals,

Lyn White
Animals Australia Investigator & Campaign Director

Now that the 7.30 Report has alerted the Australian public to the horrific cruelty that our live export industry is responsible for, our Government is under intense pressure to respond. Australia now has a new Agriculture minister who is willing to meet with and listen to animal welfare advocates about the inherent problems of live animal export. Please help spare millions more animals from suffering by sending a short, polite message to encourage Minister Ludwig to ban the cruel live export trade:
