Brazil’s Proposed Belo Monte Dam Damns Amazonian Rainforests and Peoples

The Brazilian government continues with plans to build the massive Belo Monte Dam on the Xingu River in the Amazon rainforest, despite massive domestic and international opposition.
The 11.2 billion dollar dam will flood an estimated 500 square kilometers of the Amazon rainforest and threaten the survival of tens of thousands of indigenous and traditional peoples who depend on the Xingu River for their livelihoods.
The Kayapó leader Raoni Metuktire, who gained international exposure touring the world with Sting, said indigenous men from the Xingu were preparing their bows and arrows in order to fight off the dam. “I think that today the war is about to start once more and the Indians will be forced to kill the white men again so they leave our lands alone.”

This is an appeal to help get a wolf in Serbia returned to her home and the person that originally raised her. All of the following video links and newspaper articles are direct copies and translations of recent news from Serbia.
At the moment, over 3,000 people have written to the head of the Orthodox Serbian Church asking that the she wolf is returned to the monastery and the monk who has cared for her from when she was only 15 days old.
If you wish to write also and join in fighting for the release of the she wolf, then please use the sample letter and the mail links given at the end of this post.
This wolf needs to be returned to the man (the monk) who loves and cares for her. She must not be allowed to remain in a city dog cage as she is at present.

Animal groups unite on World Day for Animals in Laboratories to stop the construction of an animal testing laboratory in Malaysia.
To mark World Day for Animals in Laboratories (April 24th), a coalition of animal protection groups has launched an international effort to stop the construction of an animal laboratory at the Masjid Tanah Industrial Park in Malacca, Malaysia. The proposal, which has only recently come to light, is a result of collaboration between the Indian contract testing company, Vivo Bio Tech, and the State government-owned Melaka Biotech.
The coalition, which includes the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), which represents animal protection organisations from 17 countries, has written to the Government urging it not to allow this facility to go ahead on humanitarian grounds. Also to be considered is the impact that allowing such a facility will have upon Malaysia’s international image in the world. A meeting to discuss the coalition’s objections in full has been requested.
Disturbingly, Malaysia currently has no legislation governing the use of animals in research. According to the company’s website (www.vivobio.com), Vivo Biotech carries out extensive animal research, including toxicity testing on a variety of species for a number of purposes, including the controversial use for cosmetic products. It has also been reported that primates could be sourced locally in Malaysia. The government of Malaysia made an important stand by re-instating the ban on the export of primates for research in 2008. Should the animal laboratory be allowed to be set up in Malacca, immense suffering, misery and death will be inflicted on thousands of animals, and potentially facilitate the trade in wild-caught macaques within Malaysia.
The coalition opposes the construction of this facility for both ethical reasons and the lack of scientific validity of using animals in testing. Action Alert Please support the international campaign to stop the development of an animal testing laboratory in Malaysia
We are writing to request that you join with us in opposing the development of an animal testing facility at the Masjid Tanah Industrial Park in Malacca, Malaysia. The BUAV has joined with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) to campaign on this issue and we need your help!
The laboratory, which plans to house nonhuman primates, dogs and small animals, will be the result of a RM450 million deal between the Indian contract testing company, Vivo BioTech, Vanguard Creative Technologies, and the Malaysian government-owned company, Melaka Biotech.
Malaysia currently has no legislation governing the use of animals in research. According to the company’s website (www.vivobio.com), Vivo Biotech carries out extensive animal research, including toxicity testing on a variety of species for a number of purposes, including the controversial use for cosmetic products. It has also been reported that primates could be sourced locally in Malaysia. The government of Malaysia made an important stand by re-instating the ban on the export of primates for research in 2008. Should the animal laboratory be allowed to be set up in Malacca, immense suffering, misery and death will be inflicted on thousands of animals, and potentially facilitate the trade in wild-caught macaques within Malaysia.
The coalition opposes the construction of this facility for both ethical reasons and the lack of scientific validity of using animals in testing. 24th April, 2010 is World Day for Laboratory Animals
All of us have our own particular favourites when it comes to choosing cosmetics or toiletries. High powered advertising and the glittering facades of gigantic shopping malls, make the prospect of shopping for these items quite exciting and desirable.
But how do these products reach these shelves in the first place? The journey is not easy, especially for all the animals involved in the process. Most cosmetics, toiletries and household products, are tested on animals first, before being cleared and ready for human consumption.
Small cages, cold metallic table surfaces, lethal looking instruments, contraptions to confine an animal completely for purposes of testing and experimentation; this is what a lab animal faces every day and night of it’s terrifying existence in this unnatural setting. Millions of animals are subjected to horrifying cruelty so that we humans can cream our faces, shampoo our hair and even clean our floors as safely as possible. Each product has been tested on animals first.
After undergoing painful experimentation for most of their lives, many are then euthanized so that Scientists can study the effects of a product on their internal organs. This is what an animal, chosen for the lab, faces every day of it’s life; terrible suffering followed by a wretched death.
How can we, as people who really care for the welfare of animals, deal with this type of situation and also avoid being a party to such cruelty? There are ways :
Firstly, as customers, we can refuse to buy any product that has been tested on animals.
Many large cosmetic companies have now abandoned animal testing. This is indicated on the packaging of the product you buy, so read everything carefully before making your purchase. You can also ask sales people or the Manager of the store to help you, though, most of them may not be even aware that products are tested on animals. You can help educate them.
If you are really fond of a particular product and the packaging tells you nothing, locate the contact number or email address of the manufacturer on the same packaging and contact the concerned person directly. Ask if the product has been tested on animals as you do not wish to purchase any item that involves cruelty to an innocent animal. This helps a great deal, as customers are all important, and you are a customer.
If you are in doubt about the safety aspect of products, related to testing on animals, log on to the National Anti-Vivisection Society site and read about the safe alternatives to animal testing.
To make a compassionate and informed choice, you can go to the PETA India lab animals’ site and find out exactly which company tests on animals and which does not. There are approximately 800 which do not resort to animal testing now.
On this one day of the year, when we pause and reflect on the terrible plight of these animals, make a silent pledge to yourself to avoid using any product that involves this type of cruelty. And on behalf of all the animals you will save in this way, we thank you.

It is stated in the Serbian press today that President Tadic of Serbia may be adopting ‘Mila’, the dog from Belgrade who had all of her legs hacked off in a frenzied attack.
President Tadic – the animal saviour ? – Only when he actually implements Serbian legislation(which was passed in 2005) to actually protect animals!
Whilst we are happy that this situation brings Mila’s case to national attention and most importantly, hopefully provides life long care and attention for Mila, it also makes President Tadic appear to be an animal saviour in this undertaking.
President Tadic will only be regarded in a positive way, as an animal saviour, by the global animal welfare / rights movement when he acts to stop the mass killings of stray dogs and cats right across Serbia. Basically, when the President implements Serbian national legislation that stops the mass killing of stray animals which became law on 02/11/2005, then people will say that he has actually moved with the times.
If the president had undertaken this commitment in the past and acted to stop the abuse and suffering of stray animals in Serbia, then the situation where ‘Mila’ has had all her legs hacked off may never have happened.
The president is currently responsible for the mass killing of Serbian strays, and he is also the man who can act to change this (his) policy. Until he does, the simple ‘adoption’ of a dog which has been abused under his current regime will do little to gain him friends around the world who care about animal suffering.
Real protection of real animals across Serbia needs to be shown by implementation of existing Serbian legislation, not just a publicity stunt using an abused animal which has suffered from your non-implemetation regime.
Mr. President, lets see implementation of existing Serbian animal welfare legislation; only then can we consider you to be a true friend of the animals.

Moran, Gallegly & 54 Others Respond to Supreme Court Ruling on Animal Cruelty
Chairs of Animal Protection Caucus Introduce Bill Making Crush Videos Illegal
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Co-chairs of the Animal Protection Caucus Reps. Jim Moran (D-VA) and Elton Gallegly (R-CA) introduced, along with 54 other cosponsors, a bipartisan bill authored by Gallegly and designed to overcome the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down federal law barring the sale of so-called “crush videos,” which graphically depict the abuse and killing of animals.
Gallegly’s original bill passed the House in 1999 on a bipartisan vote of 372-42 and in the Senate by unanimous consent. President Clinton signed it into law. For 10 years, it shut down the crush video industry.
“Violence is not a First Amendment issue; it is a law enforcement issue,” Gallegly said. “Ted Bundy and Ted Kaczynski tortured or killed animals before killing people. The FBI, U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice consider animal cruelty to be one of the early warning signs of potential violence by youths. This law is one step toward ending this cycle of violence.”
“The Supreme Court decision is a blow to the effort to prevent animal cruelty and a victory for the profiteers behind the `crush’ video industry, which glorifies the killing of defenseless animals,” said Moran. “For 10 years, federal law had worked to dramatically reduce the proliferation of these videos. Now, Congress must act to restore these commonsense protections against animal cruelty.”
The more narrowly focused legislation would prevent video depictions of drowning, impaling, burning and crushing of animals, while addressing constitutional concerns outlined by the court.
“Animal abuse and profiting from these actions are wrong,” said Rep. Betty Sutton (D-OH), a member of the Animal Protection Caucus and original cosponsor of the bill. “We must close the loopholes to crack down and end the trade in crush videos. Today, we are unequivocally restating, with a narrowly tailored measure, that it is unacceptable to videotape and sell extreme, cruel, and illegal depictions of the torturing, maiming, or mutilation of animals.”
“When the law banning animal cruelty videos was passed in 1999, the videos depicting the crushing of small animals virtually disappeared from the market,” said Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), another original cosponsor. “The implication by Chief Justice Roberts that the law should be circumscribed to require that the depicted conduct be `cruel’ will be addressed by this new bill.”
“Animal cruelty is not something to celebrate and circulate online,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), an original cosponsor and Animal Protection Caucus member. “On the heels of yesterday’s Supreme Court decision, we’re taking immediate and bipartisan action to protect animals without infringing on the right to free speech. The bottom line is that we need to protect animals from being tortured or killed in a manner that is criminal or morally reprehensible. No one should be allowed to profit from so-called crush videos or other images of animal cruelty.”
“While I am disappointed in its ruling, I have the highest respect for the Supreme Court,” Gallegly said. “They left the door ajar for us to continue to outlaw these heinous actions and we intend to do so.”
“I refuse to stand by while people profit from the mutilation and torture of helpless puppies, kittens and other animals.” said Moran. “I look forward to continuing to working with Congressman Gallegly to respond to this decision while preserving the constitutional freedoms all Americans hold dear.”
