Uk (London): People’s March Against Animal Cruelty – Photographs. ALSO – Ireland: Video Footage From ARAN.

Dear Friends,

The demonstration which happened in London against animal cruelty was a huge success with about more than 1,000 attending the event.

People walked through Central London.

It was a long day – some went on to demonstrate outside a laboratory where they test on animals.

The unique thing about the protest was that it was organised by the “people” and not one organisation. It was in the real sense a “people’s voice”.

Here is a link of some of the pictures we got from London :

HOPEFULLY NEXT TIME THIS CAN BE A GLOBAL EVENT on same day with same issues.

Thanks

Animal Rights Action Network

Dear ARAN Member & Supporter,

In London last weekend, over 2000 people marched through the busy streets to protest animals used in painful, unscientific and unreliable experiments. The event in London was just one of many held across the globe to mark ‘World Day for Animals in Laboratories’an international day of action to abolish deadly animal experiments in favour of modern, sophisticated medical research.

Please be sure to view the exciting footage of the London rally – click here.

Did you know animal experimentation goes on behind closed doors in Ireland? That’s right, these animals are caged up in steel, cold, chilling rooms waiting to be dissected for experiments that are actually holding back medical progress and delaying the day when we can find vital cures for Cancer, HIV, Stroke and Heart disease. In Ireland those same animals need your active support. Since 2006, ARAN has organized the only national march and rally against cruelty to animals in Ireland and each year it grows stronger and stronger!

Watch footage of ARAN’s main march and rallies in Dublin, Ireland. 2006, 2008, 2009 rally footage and TV3 news footage.

Once you view the above links, won’t you pledge to become more active with ARAN and pledge to attend our rally on October 3rd, 2010 in Dublin? We can never overly stress how important your voice and active participation actually is. Leaving the work up to someone else will never end animal abuse. Sitting back wishing it would all end, will never end animal abuse either. It takes just a couple of moments out of your day from time to time, and can genuinely make a huge difference. We cannot do it without you! Please click the ‘reply’ on this mail – take two minutes to let ARAN know you care and take two minutes to tell us what you can do to help those poor animals. They really have no one else but you, is it to much to ask considering the pain and suffering these poor creatures go through?

Thank you for everything you are doing for animals!

Germany: Lufthansa Decide to Stop Flying Animals to Laboratories.

Great news: Less than one day after PETA posted photos of 50 forlorn beagles who were transported by Lufthansa airlines to a Charles River Laboratory (CRL) in Scotland, Lufthansa announced that it would no longer transport dogs and cats to laboratories!

Dogs and cats are used in a variety of laboratory experiments. They’ve been forced to inhale and/or ingest toxic substances, addicted to drugs and alcohol, purposely deafened, blinded, burned, infected with diseases, or used to test various products. Thousands of dogs are poisoned every year to test drugs, vaccines, and medical devices. Beagles are often used because of their size and gentle nature.

The experiments are legal when “properly conducted” in a laboratory setting. Experimenters—and animal suppliers—who violate the minimal standards set forth by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), often get little more than a slap on the wrist—if that. Since 2007, Marshall Farms, the breeding facility where the dogs in the photos originated, has been cited for more than 20 violations of the AWA. CRL, which is one of the world’s largest breeders and users of animals for experiments, has violated federal laws more than two dozen times since 2007.  (It was recently fined $14,000 by the USDA for negligence in the deaths of 33 monkeys in its Nevada facilities.)

Every year, millions and millions of animals—dogs, cats, primates, rats, mice, rabbits, sheep, and just about every other species you can imagine—are tortured and killed in laboratories across the globe. So Lufthansa’s decision to stop transporting dogs and cats to laboratories, while a small victory, is significant. One more company has washed the blood from its hands by refusing to ship animals to their death. Air Canada stopped shipping dogs to laboratories in 2007, and major airline carriers, Cathay Pacific and Qantas, refuse to transport any animals to laboratories. Just a couple of weeks ago, the state of Utah stopped requiring animal shelters to hand over dogs and cats to universities and other institutions for use in laboratory experiments. Every victory helps, even the small ones.

And Lufthansa’s quick decision to stop shipping dogs and cats to labs shows that public outcry truly makes a difference. Not even one day passed between when PETA posted the photos—and an action alert encouraging people to contact the company to complain—and Lufthansa changed its policy. Few companies want to tangle with PETA, or all the caring people who make the victories possible.

We still have a long way to go (PETA is now trying to persuade Lufthansa to extend its policy to other sentient animals), but, we are making headway—slowly, but surely. Please see StopAnimalTests.com to find out how you can help put a stop to animal tests.

Petition Link: – NOTE – THE PETITION IS NOW CLOSED.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/Royal-Intervention-to-Save-Moroccan-Animals

Unfortunately, despite trying to give support to Moroccan animal welfare campaigners by asking His Royal Highness to personally intervene and help animals in his country, we have only just been able to get together 1,000 signatures when we were aiming for a total of at least 5,000.

The petition has been open since September 2009, and in approximately six months 1,000 signatures have been achieved.  At this continued rate it will take some two and a half years to reach even our target total; that is two and a half more years of suffering without intervention and action for the animals of Morocco.

So now it has been decided to close the petition.

Despite the probable wishes of some to now contribute their signature to this campaign, it will not be possible. People have had over six months already to put their name into a box – a matter of a few seconds to undertake. So now we move on, and with the petition closed, we have to act to present what signatures we have to the Royal family of Morocco.

Contact will be made with our Moroccan campaigners to ask and decide on what move is next regarding the petition. We would like to thank everyone who did give their name to the petition. It is disappointing to only have reached one fifth of our aimed target, but maybe lessons can be learned with regard future challenges such as this.

A full copy (electronic) of all the signatures will now be made and forwarded to friends in Morocco. In this format, we hope that a paper printout of all the signatures and comments can then be produced. We then envisage that the paper copy of the petition can then be sent to His majesty asking for him to take action on behalf of Morocco’s animals. We will provide further information on events as things happen.

Special thanks to everyone who did sign and put the petition word round.

SAV.

Uk: ‘Uncaged’ Expose (Uk) Political Party Policies on Animals – The Conservatives’ Animal Protection Rating is 0.37% and to Bring Backk Hunting.

VOTING ADVICE AND HOW WOULD ANIMALS FARE UNDER A TORY GOVERNMENT?

In this final week before the (Uk) election we’re publishing our expert voting recommendations in each seat to help you use your vote to speak up for defenceless animals.

VERY IMPORTANT ***** For Uk residents ONLY ******–

Please enter your postcode to:

Find out which constituency you are in and who your election candidates are.

Find out where your candidates stand on the Protecting Animals in Democracy manifesto and our voting recommendation.

Send the Protecting Animals in Democracy questionnaire to any candidates who haven’t yet answered it.

At www.vote4animals.org.uk you can also find out more about party policies, the animal protection manifesto we are asking candidates to support, and more about the groundbreaking Protecting Animals in Democracy project.

Conservatives offer little hope for animals

With over 5000 emails sent to candidates, and thousands of replies received from election candidates, some revealing patterns are emerging about the relative commitment of the parties to animal protection.

So far, we’ve tried to stay as party-neutral as possible, but a comparison of party responses is now showing a clear message.

Most alarming are the Conservative candidates. We have received a miniscule 14 positive replies out of a possible 3774. The Conservatives’ animal protection rating is therefore a pretty nasty 0.37%. Not one Tory out of the 629 surveyed has agreed with all six of our animal protection manifesto points. More Tories than any other party simply aren’t bothering to reply to their constituents’ questions about their stance on hunting and other animal issues.

Labour score 16.3% and the Lib Dems 24%.

As usual, the Green candidates are the most supportive with a 54% agreement rate. In fact 95% of the actual responses received from Green candidates were positive.

The Conservative tactic to hide their intention to bring back hunting could well be working. So please click here to write to the letters’ page of your local paper to alert fellow voters to the barbaric consequences of a Conservative victory.

With best wishes

Serbia: At Long Last, Belgrade City To Introduce a New ‘Animal Police’ Unit Formed Aimed at Targetting Animal Abuses

There has been press coverage this week of new proposals which are supposed to be introduced by the Serbian authorities, particularly in Belgrade City.

The article link and a Google translation of the article are provided below.

Basically, after all the bad publicity with what happened to ‘Mila’

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/serbia-after-mima-in-bulgaria-now-we-have-mila-another-dog-which-has-had-all-its-legs-chopped-off/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/serbia-president-tadic-to-adopt-mila-but-where-is-implementation-of-the-real-serbian-animal-welfare-legislation-from-04112005-mr-president/

and all the protests levelled at the Serbian authorities, including demonstrations on the streets (see newspaper article for pictures), one Dr Vladimir Terzin, wants to establish an ‘Animal Police’ unit staffed entirely with animal lovers, who will also receive specific / specialist training for the job.

This police unit will be responsible for making sure that Serbian animal welfare regulations are applied and that perpetrators are punished accordingly.

At the moment, this specialist unit is for the City of Belgrade only, but we (SAV) sincerely hope that positive lessons will be learned from the establishment of this unit which can then be transposed into other cities and towns around Serbia.

We are informed that the city of Belgrade has, in collaboration with the local university (vet ?), been actively engaged in castrating animals around the city for several months now, and that this is being paid for with funds out of the city budget.  This can do nothing but help to reduce the numbers of stray animals currently being born into a life of abuse and misery and eventual death on the streets of the capital city.

It must be remembered that it has been common for thousands of stray dogs and cats to be rounded up and killed by shinter teams in the city of Belgrade every year.

Link – SAV presentation to Mr. Alain Hutchinson MEP (Belgium):       To Hutchinson

Despite the police unit only initially being established in Belgrade city, we consider that at last there are hopefully some positive changes ahead with regard stray and pet animals within the whole of Serbia.  As an NGO which has been campaigning for several years and pushing for much better welfare advances for both strays and roaming (owned) animals within Serbia, we can do nothing but regard this move by the Belgrade authorities as a very positive one.

But this does not mean that we simply sit back now and accept everything we read or are being told.  Experience of the Serbian government and local / city authorities and their shinter teams, combined with very negative / non actions from the Public Prosecutors department(s) over the last five or six years has taught us that we take nothing given as a verbal statement as the truth, regardless of who makes it and their political position.  We have been fed too many promises in the past, only to never even see them start to materialise or at best, or their implementation simply fade away in a very short time, taking the suffering back to how it was – terrible !

With our animal welfare friends and colleagues in Serbia, Germany and other nations, we will be closely monitoring what actually happens now in Belgrade city by the newly formed special ‘Animal Police’.  If we find that there are no improvements, no legislation implementation or no prosecutions of the animal abusive perpetrators during the coming months, as we are informed there will be, then we will scream, shout and take our case directly back to the EU.  For our non EU supporters of SAV, we must point out that Serbia is currently NOT a member state of the European Union (EU).  In order to achieve EU membership (accession); a state such as Serbia must show that it IS implementing its own national ‘rules of law’ / legislation in order to gain membership of the EU ‘club’.

Possibly, this establishment of the animal police test unit and the promised prosecutions of those who commit serious crimes and abuse against innocent animals is the first step towards enforcement of this ‘rule of law’ by the Serbian authorities.  It is far too late, but better late than never !

Whatever happens, we are watching and we will not hesitate in informing you all of the (hopefully) great advances or (sadly) the continuing failures for animals which will happen in the coming months and years.  Our aim has been and will continue to be a voice for Serbian animals; that will never change, regardless of the political situation, the time and the place.

Now it is down to the Belgarde authorities and their new animal police to ensure that verbal quotations are followed up with real actions.

We are watching !

SAV.

Lets hope that these scenes become history due to the work of the new Animal Police.

English Translation – via Google Translate:

In Belgrade soon, “police animal”

Tanjug | 26.

The city administration in the future plans, in cooperation with the MUP, form a “police animal,” said the now deputy secretary of Municipal Affairs and Housing Vladimir Terzin.

He told Tanjug news agency explained that the unit worked on the model of similar services in the world, with the obligation to take care of all animals in the territory of Belgrade.
The service said Terzin, you should have no more than five to eight people, who would care for životnjama on the street, but also those udomljenim which, as noted, their bosses are not maintained adequately.

“Za početak se planira odlazak dve osobe na obuku u inostranstvo, kao i nabavka specijalizovanog vozila u te svrhe”, najavio je Terzin.”For a start we are planning two people going abroad for training, as well as supply of specialized vehicles for these purposes,” said Terzin.
According to him, the city launched the campaign with the Veterinary Faculty in Belgrade for the sterilization and castration of animals.
He recalled that the Mayor Dragan Djilas and city leaders support the weekly protest over the association for the protection of animals, called “Stop violence against animals” because of frequent attacks on dogs in the city.
Thinking about introducing a 24 – hour SOS lines through which could apply specific cases of animal abuse, said Terzin.

Đilas na protestu “Stop nasilju nad životinjama”Djilas to protest, “Stop violence against animals”

Protest rally, “Stop violence against animals, which were organized by the Association for the Protection of Animals, was held today in front of the Old Palace.

The protest was joined by Belgrade Mayor Dragan Ðilas, Secretary of Municipal Affairs and Housing Predrag Petrovic and Assistant Secretary for Municipal Affairs and Housing Vladimir Terzin. The event was organized by the Society for the Protection of Animals, the Association “European Initiative 17” and the Association for the Protection of Animals and civic consciousness “Phoenix.”

As stated by the organizers, the protest was organized because of terror against the frequent killing of pets and street animals, sometimes even ownership, culminating in the case of Dog Mile, where all four legs amputated.

Plan of the city government is that in the next year and a half to build a three asylum abandoned animals. Shelter in Rakovica is open for several months, and the future of these facilities will be in Mladenovac and Palilula. Also, the city has launched a campaign with the Veterinary Faculty of sterilization and castration of animals, in cooperation with the MUP special vehicle will be provided for two members of the “animal police” whose training is financed in the abroad – said Predrag Petrovic.

At today’s protest strongly supported the intention to create a police animal, and proposed the introduction of SOS Hotline for reporting of animal abuse that would function 24 hours. The Associations welcomed the city government for the positive response to their letter regarding the introduction of fees for pets, which pointed to the problem of animal records, which is why the introduction of fees will be postponed until the full adjustment records.

The purpose of the fee for pets is primarily to further the udomljavanje dogs and will not pay for those citizens who Udom animals from an asylum, and those who pay taxes next year we will issue vouchers on which the free power that sterilizes their pets, said Predrag Petrovic.

She Wolf Appeal – A Message From Rev. Gray – Society of St. Francis

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/serbia-a-global-appeal-for-your-help-to-return-a-she-wolf-taken-from-a-monk-back-to-freedom-and-her-home-please-write-sample-letter-included/

A message of support for the she wolf freedom campaign to the Serbian Orthodox Church has been written on our Comments section by Rev. David Gray – Society of St. Francis.

Thank you Rev. Gray for your support of the appeal.

——————————————————————-

Comment:

In our modern world, knowledge increases as our innate human wisdom declines. To take a sentient wolf who has a quality of life relationship with a human being into captivity is an act of fear and prejudice that demans faith and demeans humanity. Has the church and state forgotten so much?

Please, I appeal to your higher nature as people of wonderful physical, mental, emotional and spiritual integrity, do what in your true heart you know to be right and release this wonderful wolf to the life it was gifted to live with its human friends. If you require, I am happy to send you my “Great Apes of Belle Vue” by email, which tells the story of my own encounters with Great Apes in captivity and the faithful and scientific miracle of inter-species communication that crosses our percieved boundaries and opens our minds and hearts to possibilities few dream of yet which, once realised, we can never step away from.

You have the power to make a fearful decision or an enlightened one. How you use that power will have implications for your own soul. Not only wolf, but YOU will be released from a bondage you may not even realise constricts you if you act with grace and compassion and free yourselves and the wolf from the captivity you have allowed to embrace you all.

Please do not dismiss this message as the words of a sentimental mind. I work with deep and dangerous situations every day; with tragedy and sorrow. I know how cruel the world can be – but I also know its inexhaustable capacity to be amazing and enriching.

With deep love to you in the name of Christ and St. Francis.

Rev. David Gray – Society of St. Francis.
