** URGENT **04/05/09 Europe: Last Call Today to Take Action in Europe for Seal Product Trade Ban

  eu-aw-logo  canada

We are only a few hours away from learning the outcome of one of the greatest efforts the ProtectSeals team — together with you — has ever undertaken. And there is still time to help.

This campaign has been a marathon — a fight of more than a decade now, for me — and tomorrow’s vote on a proposed European Union seal product trade ban could mark the beginning of the end of this senseless slaughter. If this proposal is passed, we will be one step closer to a future where baby seals are safe from being clubbed, shot, and skinned before they’ve even taken their first swim.

But even now, we cannot stop. We must make every minute count in the leadup to this vote.

I need your help to ensure that every elected representative walks into tomorrow’s meeting with one focus: passing a strong ban that will stop the cruelty and save the seals. Please, whether this is your first action on behalf of seals or your tenth, stand with us one more time and do the following right now:

1) Sign our petition, and ask everyone you know to sign, too. Remember, the winner of our contest to recruit petition-signers will join me in Canada next spring to visit the seal pups!

2) Write to your Members of the European Parliament. Make it clear that their constituents are counting on them!

3) Send a message to your Environment Minister. Preserving wildlife — including seals — is their responsibility!

I have been carrying this sadness — a burden you have shared with me — for such a very long time. Tomorrow, finally, I hope to rejoice.

Thank you for your continuing support and belief in what we are doing. None of this would be possible without you.

With hope in my heart,

Rebecca Aldworth

Dear Friends,

The bullfight scheduled for the 25th of April did not take place. According to an article the inauguration was postponed for an undetermined time. The article says that this is due to the fact that the owners want to finish the works completely before the inauguration.

The inauguration will take place but the problem is to know when. They won’t give up and there is a complete black out concerning this issue in the Panamian newspapers. It’s impossible to find any article about this.

Please continue to send protests (emails can be find on our website at “Latest Campaigns”).

On the other hand we have bad news concerning Panama, whilst we fought to prevent this inauguration, another bullring with capacity for 2000 persons, was built and inaugurated in the province of Chiriquí, last 18th of April.

Bullring in Panama

24th of April of 2009

Last saturday was inaugurated in Chiriquí (Panama), a small bullring with capacity for 2.000 persons,

Serbia / Uk: Press Release From (Uk) RSPCA Regarding Serbian Animal Welfare

We would like to  share the following news with you, all of our friends and fellow campaigners around the World.  For several days now we have been debating if this should be posted, as we know there is opposition about this from some Serbian campaigners, especially regarding the involvement of ‘ORCA’ at the meeting.

Yes, we are fully aware of the goings on at ORCA Belgrade in the recent past, and we have posted this information on this site – see links to past news at

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/03/07/activists-4-serbian-animals/

But, we consider that the meeting with President Tadic and the signing of the petition calling for a Universal Declaration of Animal Welfare can only be positive news for the animals of Serbia.  Maybe Serbian politicians are finally realising that, and as we have always campaigned along the lines of, Serbia should not be allowed accession (membership) of the EU until it vastly improves its animal welfare legislation.

We hope that the information given in the Press Release (given below) by the Uk Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) shows that the link between better animal welfare legislation and EU membership may have finally hit home in Belgrade.

The animal welfare framework law covers all species, and includes research animals, the protection of farm animals, transport and slaughter and the protection of wildlife in captivity, as well as forbidding wild animals in circuses.

Links to both Serbian circus and zoo posts below show that the current situation is dire; and so in our opinion, anything which will change this for the better is worth applauding.  We hope that you agree.

Circus and Zoo links:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/10/15/prisoners-of-the-medieval-belgrade-zoo/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/10/05/action-against-circus-belgrade-october-5th-08/

As stated, some campaigners in Serbia are not particularly pleased with the news given below due to ORCA being at the meeting.  But we feel that if new legislation improves animal welfare in zoos and circuses alone, regardless of anything else, then it is a very positive step forward.  One thing can be assured, with implementation of the animal welfare framework law, NGOs will be able to monitor and report failures in the system to the authorities.  Once it becomes an EU member state, Serbia can be formally reported to the Commission if serious failures in legislation implementation are continually seen.  This can result in state prosecutions by the EU Commission if necessary.  Some members of SAV have been involved with similar processes against Uk authorities during the past few years relating to failures in animal welfare legislation implementation, and now have considerable experience of what is required should it be necessary to help giving advice in the future.

We hope that like us, you feel that the news given in this PR below is reason to celebrate for once.

As always, anyone can leave comments on the site; that is down to the individual.  Maybe it will encourage more debate.  We respect every persons views, especially our friends who live and experience the daily troubles of Balkans strays.  All that can be hoped is that the issue will unite campaigners rather than drive wedges between them; there is only one way the future will improve for animals, and that is for cooperation between parties who should all be on the same side – the animals side !!!

President of Serbia meets with RSPCA ahead of first animal welfare law

Thursday, 23, Apr 2009 12:00

Serbia has today signalled its intent to improve animal welfare following a meeting between the country’s president and the RSPCA, ahead of the introduction of new legislation to better protect animals next month .

RSPCA International’s Senior Programme Manager for Europe, Alexandra Hammond-Seaman met President Tadic after Serbia joined a long line of countries worldwide signing a petition calling for a Universal Declaration of Animal Welfare.

Alexandra said: “It was a great honour to meet President Tadic and discuss such a vitally important issue. The Minister for Agriculture, Saša Dragin signed the petition and confirmed that Serbia will be adopting its first animal welfare framework law in May.”

Serbia is a potential country to join the European Union, and this move will allow the country to harmonise with current EU legislation on animal welfare.

The animal welfare framework law covers all species, and includes research animals, the protection of farm animals, transport and slaughter and the protection of wildlife in captivity, as well as forbidding wild animals in circuses.

After the adoption of this law Serbia will adopt the full EU legal framework on animal welfare into national legislation, as one of the prerequisites in the process towards the EU integration.

Alexandra added “RSPCA International has been actively engaged with Serbia for over five years now, by providing assistance and training with issues such as dog population control and stray dog management. We also work very closely with Serbian government agencies and the veterinary profession on improving farm animal welfare in the Country. We look forward to continuing to play a central role in helping to enforce the law.”

RSPCA International attended the meeting with another non-governmental organisation, the Organisation for Respect and Care for Animals (ORCA) which has in the past worked in Serbia to promote responsible pet ownership.

ENGLISH:

PROTEST, 09.05.2009. THE VOICE OF ANIMALS IN SERBIA

Goals

 Legal baundaries

 The ways to achieve goals

Incorporation in the Law for the benefit of animals:

No Kill sterilization strategies, because they are the only moral, economicallyjustified way, and in the unison with all current laws and the Serbian Constitution, the way of achieving control of and reducing drastically the pyramid of reproduction of dogs/cats, without any killing.

Suppression (prohibition, banning) of keeping wild animals of all kinds in captivity, as well as their torturing and killing for fun, which is called HUNT, CIRCUS, ZOO, because in the third millenium this manner is not the kind of sport, education, fun, science, but the way of disturbing the natural chain of food and the harmony which Nature by itself creates as the perfect creator, whose creation is Homo sapiens as well, and not the competent active creator.

protest12

Suppression (prohibition, banning) of existance of armed civillian groups which destroy fauna, without objective possibility of surveillance (and they are also danger for humans too)-which is the benefit of all residents of the Earth; and which make damage in the human society also, in this case in Serbia, directly or indirectly, for the cause of personal interest. Weapons should ONLY be owned by the police and the military of the state, and by on all legal ways checked individuals, but only for the purpose of protection of personal integrity, and they have to prove that it is endangered.

protest13

Suppression (prohibition, banning) of the breeding of the fur-animals for the sake of taking their fur – because it is unnecessary brutality towards these animals, in the third millenium, when the technology of production of cloth is developed, and because humans have also their own skin, which covers their body, so it is not necessary and its harmful to cover their body with the double fur-cover.

Suppression (prohibition, banning) of religious ritual slaughtering of animals – from the same reason that is forbidden to ritualy slaughter humans, considering that cruelty towards living beeings IN NOT the foundation of any religion, but false explanation for criminal acts of villainus minds who misuse religion in this way, abuse it, to satisfy their own psychopatic motives.

protest14

Suppression (prohibition, banning) of experiments over animals – because science has proved that the conclusions of experiments on animals CANT be applied to Homo sapiens, and because it is not necessary to provoke pathological condition to find the solution for the problems that same animals have, so it is completely unnecessary sufferings and deaths of enormous number of healthy animals caused by this nonsensical experiments, as well as the tossing away large amounts of public money which is used to finance false scientists and their unnecessary “works”; and education which leads to conclusion of uselessness of the results of these experiments over animals can be carried out with the use of CD, DVD and written literature, because Homo sapiens in on the level of consciousness on which he has the ability of imaginative coclusions from the age of 5; the quality of human consciousness arise durigh the growth of the person, so the victims and the expenses in this case are not needed. Same money should be used in financing real science, so that the real problems with the fiziological and patofiziological functions of the Homo sapiens could be solved.

EU: Written Declaration for Strays – Please Try the Following and Target Your Specific, National and Regional MEPs for Support.

euun00017

21/04 – ** Additional Info ONLY FOR UK Citizens:

If you would rather contact your MEP(s) at their Uk offices, instead of the European ones, you can find all Uk contact details via the following link.

Simply click on the Uk region (Constituency) you live in, using the colour coded map, and then you will be provided with a full index of all your regional MEPs, including their Uk contact details.

This is now the final campaign route we can come up with to get a result on the written declaration for strays.  We have until 7th May latest to get 396 or more signatures to support the written declaration for stray and pet animals.

At the moment, we have around 170 from MEPs right across Europe.

So we are in need of at least another 225 or more from across Europe.

It sounds a lot, but if we work together, then it is easily possible.

One of the problems I have personally experienced to date when trying to contact all my own national MEPs, is that IF YOU ARE NOT DIRECTLY FROM THE NATIONAL CONSTITUENCY REGION which the MEP represents; then the MEPs does quite often not really want to get involved with an ‘alien’ citizen from another part of the country.  That is understandable as the MEP should deal with their own regional constituents, not all national constituents.

This coming week at the EU, a lot will be happening to try and get a result with regard this Written Declaration.  On Wednesday 22nd there will be a demonstration and a press conference at Strasbourg.  Invitations have ALREADY been sent out to every MEP asking them to attend this.

On Thursday 23rd, campaigners have been given permission to visit offices of MEPs in Strasbourg and to talk to them directly about the stray and pet written declaration.  If they are lucky they will be allowed to say a few words about why the legislation is so important.  MEPs will be be given a dossier and material on the stray situation throughout Europe.

From information we have now obtained, due to massive amounts of e mails on many subjects and a large workload, many MEPs don’t even know about the existence of this declaration.  But, if they are made aware, then we may have a good chance of getting many of them to support it.

So, if from now we can keep it to regional campaigners contacting their own regional (ie. Constituency) MEPs ONLY in their own country and no other, then we have a much better chance of building up wider support across the EU and getting a result, especially as the EU elections take place in June and then the MEPs will be after YOUR VOTE for them.

Maybe they can now do something for you in return – ie. sign the declaration !

The following link gives details of how to find your own national and regional (Constituency) MEPs:

First go to    http://www.europarl.europa.eu/members.do

Then click on the map of the country in which you are a citizen.

For some countries, such as France, Italy and the Uk, you will be presented with a list of constituency regions for your country within the EU.

For example:

France : Nord-Ouest has 12 MEPs in the constituency.

Italy : Nord-Occidentale has 23 MEPs in the constituency.

United Kingdom : South West has 7 MEPs in the constituency.

Click specifically on the constituency in which you live.

This will then give another list of all the MEPs who represent that constituency.

Click on each and every one of the names on this list and you will get a personal profile of that MEP.  At THE END (BOTTOM) THERE WILL BE TELEPHONE NUMBERS GIVEN TO CONTACT THAT MEP DIRECT IN BOTH BRUSSLES AND STRASBOURG.  Make sure you note the correct phone number for either Strasbourg or Brussels depending when you are going to telephone.

Important Note – for some member states, there is currently NOT a constituency system in existence.  When you click on your country, you will be given a full list of ALL THE MEPs who represent your member state.;  examples include:

Sweden – 19 Members of the European Parliament

Latvia – 9  Members of the European Parliament

Greece – 24 Members of the European Parliament

The Parliamentarians (MEPs) schedule is a follows for the next couple of weeks; they will be in:

Strasbourg on the 20th – 24th of April,

in Brussels on the 27th – 30th of April

and again in Strasbourg on the 4th – 7th of May.If you can, then please telephone the relevant constituency MEPs at the relevant location (Strasbourg or Brussels) and kindly, politely, ask them to give their support to the Written Declaration for pet and stray animals before the 5th of May.

With luck, this way we will obtain a lot of direct and widespread (international) contact with very many MEPs.  If many of them support our / your request and give their signature to the declaration, then there is every chance that we will be able to easily achieve the number of signatures required for this declaration to continue.

Good Luck and please give it a try – for the stray animals of Europe.

The Written Declaration for European Stray and Pet Animals

NOW HAS ONLY THREE WEEKS OR LESS UNTIL ITS CLOSURE.

The *** FINISH DATE IS Thursday 7th MAY 2009. ***

This is a final call to everyone across Europe to please contact your own national MEPs and ask them to sign up to this declaration.  Most of the hard work has been done for you (see links below); the last leg is down to individual citizens in their own EU member states to rally support from their national MEP’s.

Also, please distribute this site link to as many animal welfare organisations as possible on your contacts list, asking them to get their members and supporters to e mail MEP’s.  Even international friends can help us in Europe by putting the word out to contacts in animal welfare organisations.  International pressure will help.

Declarations lapse after three months in the register if they have not been signed by at least half the MEPs.

There are 785 Members of the European Parliament, and in order to prevent this declaration from finishing on 7th May, we need to gain signatures from at least 50% of MEPs.  It is a very tall order but not impossible.

MEPs right across Europe need to be contacted.

For full details of how to find your national MEP’s, including names and sample letters to copy and e mail, please view the SAV links above.

Please act NOW for the stray animals of Europe.

Finally;

Today, 17th April, Diana and I have finalised a paper which is going to be included as part of a submission to Mr. Alain Hutchinson MEP, co-author of the Written Declaration on Stray and Pet animals, during the following week by a team of campaigners from ‘SARS’.

A copy of the paper can be viewed by accessing the following link:

 to-hutchinson1

The SAV submission deals specifically with the stray situation in Serbia, currently a non-EU member state but one seeking membership over the next few years.  Other submissions which will be presented to Mr. Hunchinson will be associated with the situation for stray animals in other EU member and current non-member states.

We have been limited to the amount of space for our particular submission, but hope that you will find it is short but informative, the photographs of the situation for Serbian strays on the final pages say everything in our opinion.  We hope that this paper is a part justification for

1                    Serbia to seriously address its national stray population situation, and

2                    The European Union to implement Union-wide legislation in the very near future which will give member states no option but to implement better welfare legislation for stray animals.

The final words from Diana and I state the following:

With the EU elections this June (2009), we feel it is the responsibility of our elected members of the European Parliament to immediately pass and implement EU-wide legislation for the protection and welfare of all European stray and roaming animals. Europe cannot wait another ten years for action”.

Europe cannot keep dismissing this issue of stray animals.  Europe needs to act and act now.  We hope that the signatures given to this declaration will be a good indicator as to how much ‘animal welfare’ actually means to each and every MEP.  This is an ideal time as the views of each MEP in relation to this Declaration can be used by Euro citizens when deciding who to cast their vote(s) for at the EU Elections this June.

Thank You for your time and efforts for European Strays –

Mark and Diana – SAV.

Please, make these last few weeks productive weeks for the stray animals of Europe.
