7 Easy Ways to Help This World Elephant Day

wed 1

by Alicia Graef – August 10, 2015

On Wednesday, August 12, animal lovers around the world will be coming together to celebrate elephants and support a future where they’re respected and protected for the fourth annual World Elephant Day.

World Elephant day was launched in 2012 by Canadian documentary filmmaker Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand. On the same day, Sims’ film Return to the Forest premiered, which explores the journey and beautiful transformation that takes place when captive elephants are returned from a life with us to their home in the forest and how vital their presence there is.

wed 2

Despite being a charismatic species loved by people of all ages, elephants in both Africa and Thailand are in serious trouble. Since the first World Elephant Day, individuals, celebrities and dozens of organizations that are working on solutions that will ensure their future survival around the world, have joined in support because the threat of losing them forever is becoming a very real possibility.

Poaching in Africa has reached unprecedented levels, which some believe could wipe elephants out entirely within the next 10 years if it continues at its current rate, and there are now estimated to be less than 40,000 Asian elephants left in existence, who continue to face the threat of poaching, habitat loss and being taken for the tourism industry.

“So many people around the world love elephants but aren’t aware that elephants are in crisis. World Elephant Day helps increase security for elephants and expand habitat because it creates an opportunity to raise a rallying cry. We have to turn up the volume about the elephant crisis in order to put more pressure on leaders to take meaningful action, attract desperately needed resources, and to convince people to not buy ivory,” Misty Herrin, #SaveElephants campaign director for The Nature Conservancy, said in a statement.

wed 3

Unfortunately, wild elephants aren’t the only ones in trouble. Animal advocates have also been working to end their exploitation in captivity and entertainment and raise awareness about why elephants belong in the wild, not circuses, zoos or tourist attractions.

How to Help

This year elephant advocates will again be stepping up to raise awareness about the plight of captive and wild elephants by hosting and attending events, urging officials to take action to protect elephants and using social media to gain support and there are a lot of easy ways to help.

Support Increasing Protection Under the Endangered Species Act

In June, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a petition to have African elephants declared as two separate species – forest elephants and savannah elephants – and upgraded from threatened to endangered under the Endangered Species Act, which would add even more strength to laws intended to protect them.

Please sign and share the petition urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reclassify elephants and upgrade their status to endangered.

Tell the U.S. to Crack Down on the Ivory Trade

As the second largest market for ivory behind China, the U.S. has been called on by wildlife advocates to step up its efforts to tackle wildlife trafficking with meaningful action. Now it’s hoped a proposed rule which was formally announced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in July will virtually wipe out the market in the states by applying more restrictions to imports and exports and banning the sale of ivory across state lines.

Please sign and share the petition urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to support a ban on ivory.

You can also make a public comment in support of tougher regulations for the ivory trade directly at the Federal Register until September 28.

Don’t Buy Ivory

That should go without saying, but even legal ivory and antique items help keep the market going and help provide a cover for the illegal trade of ivory from recently killed elephants.

Support Elephant Sanctuaries

Learn about and support organizations working to give captive elephants a better life by returning them to natural environments where they can live freely like the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and Elephant Nature Park in Thailand and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Africa. In the U.S. check out the Elephant Sanctuary and the Performing Animal Welfare Society.

wed 4

Be a Voice for Captive Elephants

While more and more areas are banning the use of wild animals in circuses and Ringling Bros. recently took a big step by announcing it would retire its elephant performers, there are still other traveling shows around the world that continue to use elephants. We can send a strong message that it’s time to stop by avoiding companies and venues that continue to use them by speaking out for elephants like Nosey, who desperately needs to be retired, and by signing the petition asking Congress to pass the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act, which would ban the use of wild animals in circuses for good.

We can also help give a voice to elephants in zoos who need help like Asha, Lucky and Lucy by signing petitions on their behalf and asking countries like Zimbabwe to stop taking calves from the wild for captivity.

Make an “Elegram”

The Nature Conservancy, which is an official sponsor of World Elephant Day this year, is asking supporters to get a little crafty and make 20,000 handmade images for its #Elegram Project, which will be matched with $150,000 by generous donors for elephant conservation work in Africa. Just paint, draw, sketch or sculpt an image of an elephant, take a photo of it and upload it to their gallery.

Spread the Word

If you’re spreading the word about efforts to help elephants on social media sites, check out World Elephant day for badges and banners to share and add the hashtags #WorldElephantDay #GoGrey #BeHerd #Elegram #SaveElephants #JoinTheSTAMPede #96Elephants and #SayNoToIvory.

Victory! 39 Rescued Circus Animals Returned to the Jungle

In another victory for circus animals rescued in Peru, 39 of them are now free from their past lives and enjoying their new home in the Amazon rainforest.

The animals, including several native species of monkeys, coati mundis and kinkajous, were rescued byAnimal Defenders International (ADI) in partnership with Peruvian authorities, following the country’s 2011 ban on circus animals.

The rescue effort, dubbed Operation Spirit of Freedom, has lasted for months and has saved almost 80 animals from a life of exploitation in circuses and the illegal wildlife trade.

After spending three months constructing new habitats at the Pilpintuwasi Wildlife Sanctuary in the Amazon, these animals were finally flown over 600 miles from ADI’s Spirit of Freedom rescue center in Lima to Iquitos by the Peruvian Air Force and taken by boat down the Amazon River with support from the Navy.

The mission includes animals like Pepe, a lonely spider monkey whose touching love story reached us on Valentine’s day when he finally got the companionship of another of his kind after spending eight years alone chained by the neck.

Now, Pepe and dozens of others will be able to live out their days in an environment that’s as close to their natural habitat as it gets, where they’ll have plenty of space to explore and the opportunity to socialize with each other. According to ADI, while all of their futures are secure at their new home, some may be eligible for release in the future.

ADI President Jan Creamer described the effort in a statement:

The grueling 15-hour relocation operation began at 2am, and we raced against a tight schedule to catch and load the monkeys, coatis and kinkajous into their travel crates. We traveled by road, air and river across Peru to reach the animals’ forever home in the Amazon rainforest. Our team gave the animals treats and held nervous individuals’ hands to keep them calm during the flight. All the animals were torn from the wild, so it was magical to take them back to the jungle. After Pepe the spider monkey was released, he gave me a big hug before heading out into the trees. One by one, all the animals scampered from their crates into their wonderful new homes.

The move to the jungle marks one of the last phases of this operation. For the next part, 33 lions and a tiger will be flown from Peru to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado this June.

In even more good news, those big cats will be joined by Cholita, an abused bear who was being kept illegally by a circus. Since we first heard about this elderly Andean bear’s heartbreaking story, she has been moved to ADI’s rescue center in Lima where she’s getting the love and care she deserves as she’s prepared for the journey to her new home.

Pathetic Tricks In A Circus Is NO Fun For An Animal

UK: The Political Joke That Is Wild Animals In UK Circuses – But NO JOKE For The Animals !

SAV Comment:

This is special for us here in the UK at this present time.  See our words from the dogs mouth re the UK General Election in May this year – https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/03/09/england-from-the-dogs-mouth-uk-elections-may-2015/

Over the last 6 months or so, the UK government led by Conservative David Cameron has had no less than 3 opportunities to ban the use of wild animals that remain in a few British circuses.  3 times the government has failed due to the fact that the Bill has been ‘talked out’ (not given enough time to be passed; by a small number of Conservative Members of parliament.

In 2009 the government Ministry Defra published the follow up to a public consultation – you can read it here:  http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20100202100434/http:/defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/circus-wild-animals/consultation.pdf

Links – http://www.ad-international.org/media_centre/go.php?id=3797&si=12

http://www.captiveanimals.org/news/2013/07/wild-animal-circus-ban-under-threat

The outcome – wild animals are still used in a few British circuses.

To allow wild animals to be used in circuses is to ignore the calls of the 94% of respondents to the 2010 public consultation on this matter, to dismiss the reams of evidence and opinion published in Hansard, and to overlook the outcome of dozens of hours of parliamentary debate, dating back to 2005 and earlier; all of which clearly demonstrate the overwhelming support for a ban on all wild animals in travelling circuses

So, come May 2015 and the UK General Election; it could be suggested that animal welfare campaigners DO NOT give a vote to politicians who have ducked, dived and dithered for the last 10 years or more regarding wild animals being used in circuses; despite 94% of the British public calling for a ban when there was the public consultation ! – and the government works for us ? – don’t think so !.  In the last 2 weeks, just 3 Conservative MP’s, namely The Independent, Andrew Rosingdale,  Phillip Davies, and Christopher Chope have scuttled the wishes of 94% of the British public; voters !  – The Bill had every chance of becoming law, but as Parliament will be winding down in the coming weeks in order to allow campaigning for the election; there is no real chance of the law being passed.  We will have to wait yet another series of months, years ?? before the issued has another chance and wild animals in circuses are confined to the history books.

The current situation could be represented like this: – David Cameron MP (Prime Minister) – man or mouse for animal welfare in the UK ?

 david+cameron+mouse

The current government of the UK have had their chance to help animal welfare legislation – they have failed beyond belief.  Thus they do not get the vote in May 2015; simple as that.  Support and votes will only be given to political parties who actually come forward and declare their intentions to help animals and their welfare.

BUT – Help Asian Animals in the Circus;

FOR ASIAN ANIMALS, do better than the UK clowns in government – Sign to stop the cruelty.

Take the pledge now – and say ‘NO’ to animal performance cruelty.

The animals forced to entertain the cheering crowds at circuses and in zoos and safari parks around Asia lead a life of misery and fear.

SIGN THE PLEDGE

These animals suffer terribly, both in and out of the spotlight. They live in dark and dismal cages or cells, and endure abuse, intimidation and neglect. Having to perform unnatural tricks to roaring crowds, under bright lights and with blaring music is a terrifying, and often painful, ordeal for the animals and a shame on those who choose to watch.

No voice, no choice.

Say no to performing animals.

Please sign our pledge and ask your friends to sign too.

Thank you,

David Neale
Animal Welfare Director.

UPDATE 17/10/14.

SAV Comment:

94% of the British public want an end to wild animals being used in travelling circuses in the UK.  On 17/10/14 the UK government led by David Cameron, Prime Minister; kicked 94% of the British public in the teeth by NOT allowing a vote to ban the use of wild animals in English circuses.

In May 2015 the  British public will have a General Election and have the opportunity to eradicate David Cameron and his Conservative Party from government.  This issue is just another example of how Cameron’s ‘rich boy’ Tory government are completely ignoring the wishes of the British general public – and instead only doing what they want to do whilst giving 2 fingers to everybody else – in this case 94% of the public !

We say ‘roll on May 2015’.  In the meantime; we will continue to expose the Cameron government for all their animal abuses; the fumbled badger killings recently being yet another example.

Congratulations to Malta for doing the right thing with circus animals today.

Fingers crossed for a ‘Goodbye David Cameron’ in May 2015.

There are plenty of clowns relating to the circus; and David Cameron Prime Minister is the biggest clown of all !!

The following is the message late today (17/10/14) from Liz Tyson; Director at the UK ‘Captive Animals Protection Society’ (CAPS):

Dear Mark,

Malta comes good for animals in circuses but Westminster lets them down again.

We were delighted this morning to hear that Malta has now passed a ban on the use of ALL animals in circuses.

We were really pleased to be able to provide advice and support to local groups in Malta who have been working hard on this campaign for years and it is heartening to see the proposals finally make it into law.

But our delight tuned to dismay at our own Government when, at the second reading of his Private Members Bill to ban wild animals in circuses, MP Jim Fitzpatrick revealed that the Government had intervened to block the proposal.

This is in spite of repeated assurances from the Prime Minister and Minister responsible for the issue that they were supportive. We told you earlier this week that a damning letter from Nick Clegg to a constituent raised alarm bells over the Government’s true intentions on this matter and it now seems that those concerns were well-founded.

We know how much you, like us, were hoping that today would be the day when we would take that important step closer to seeing an end to the cruel use of wild animals in English circuses. We know that you have worked hard alongside us to make it a reality. We also know that, like us, you won’t be giving up easily.

Just moments after the objection was raised to the Bill, we were in contact with our campaign partners and Jim Fitzpatrick MP and are now in the process of working together to challenge this new obstacle.

We won’t give in until all circuses are animal-free.

We wanted you to be the first to know about today’s news as we know that the future of wild animals currently being exploited in circuses in the UK is important to you. We are sorry that we cannot share the good news we all so wanted to hear. But we must continue.

The second reading is rescheduled again for next Friday, the 24th October. So we will be doing all we can between now and then to secure a positive result for the animals.

Thank you, as ever, for your support,
Liz Tyson, Director CAPS.

http://www.stopcircussuffering.com/news/europe/circus-inspections-reveal-multiple-failings-mps-consider-wild-animal-ban/

The bill to ban wild animals in circuses has been blocked by Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell at its second reading today. This is the second time that Mr Rosindell has blocked the bill, introduced by Jim Fitzpatrick MP and championed by ADI.

It is difficult to comprehend why anyone would block this popular and long-awaited legislation, sabotaging efforts to bring the suffering of circus animals finally to an end – although Mr Rosindell has previously written a brochure foreword for the now disbanded Great British Circus, where shocking elephant abuse was exposed by ADI.

Despite his support for this outdated industry, we sincerely hope Mr Rosindell will respect his constituents’ wishes, and the will of the public and fellow MPs, and not oppose the bill at its next reading on October 24th.

Despite interventions by Mr Rosindell, the circus bill still provides the best opportunity to secure the ban ahead of the general election.

Here we go yet again – the ‘other’ part of the UK coalition government who are now telling us there are more important things to be done.  And this from the man who has a 7% popularity vote from the public this week ! – would you not think (as a so called ‘Liberal’) that he would realise that there are many votes to be won out there from a party that shows interest and action for animals ?

“Animal advocates from CAPS and campaign partners at the Born Free Foundation have today expressed their shock at indications from the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg of a back-track on the promised ban on wild animals in travelling circuses in England”.

Said Liz Tyson, Director of CAPS:

We have heard time and time again that the Government is still committed to introducing the ban before the next general election but this most recent communication from Nick Clegg appears to tell a different story. We are urging anyone concerned about the continued use of wild animals in circuses in this country to take urgent action and ask their MP to support Jim Fitzpatrick’s Bill, which will have its second reading in Westminster on Friday 17th October”.

Said Chris Draper, Programmes Manager for Captive Wild Animals at the Born Free Foundation:

We have been concerned for some time that the Government does not intend to fulfil its promise to ban wild animals in circuses, and this latest indication does little to settle our fears. We are in a bizarre situation where the public and Parliamentarians have been united in favour of a ban for some time, but our elected Government continues to stall. And all the while, wild animals such as tigers and zebras continue to be hauled around England. We are calling on the Government to make good on their promise and take action now to end this outdated practice.”

———————————————————————

Just days before MP Jim Fitzpatrick’s Bill to ban the use of wild animals in English circuses is given its second reading in the House of Commons, a concerning letter penned by Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has arrived at CAPS HQ.

In it, and despite repeated assertions that the promised ban is still very much on the Parliamentary agenda, Clegg states that he “understand[s] why it was felt that other policy issues had to take priority for the final parliamentary session”. We are deeply concerned that this indicates that the ban has been shelved by the authorities.

But all is not lost!

Jim Fitzpatrick’s Private Members’ Bill has its second reading in Parliament this Friday. If the initiative is successful, the ban could be introduced in spite of the Government’s failure to act.

This is the final push!

We have just a few days to make out voices heard. Please ask your friends and families to get involved by writing to their MPs. It takes a few moments and could make the world of difference. Click here to write now.

Tell me more about the Bill!

The article says:
This circus neither have a permit nor the health certificate for the animals!!!

They could use the Nowruz holidays and  the chaos of that time to enter Gheshm and perform their show during the holidays ( I don’t how it is possible with SO many animals and equipment. F.).

But, the authoroties found out later on and closed the circus and ask them to obtain health certificate for the animals. Something that the owner/manager of the circus wasn’t able to accomplish .

It adds that the department of environment added to the number of the cages and is waiting for necessary permits to transfer the animal to somewhere else.”

Sorry for the inconvenience. Please share it with your friends.
