USA: SPEAK OUT AGAINST COYOTE KILLING ‘TOURNAMENT’ IN MAINE

ACTION ALERT

SPEAK OUT AGAINST COYOTE KILLING ‘TOURNAMENT’ IN MAINE

Right now in Northern Maine (Jackman), predator hunters are killing coyotes as part of a contest “tournament.” Sponsored by the Jackman-Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce, the “kill” runs from December 16th through January 30, 2010. Prizes are awarded for those hunters who kill both the most coyotes and the largest individuals. Ethics aside, random coyote killing will do nothing to protect Maine’s deer herds, as tournament sponsors contend. A copious and growing body of literature shows that coyote population reduction efforts through lethal control are futile, given the species’ resiliency and ability to biologically rebound.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1- Contact the Jackman-Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce and express your concern about this hunt. Points to convey:

  • Let them know that their name as a Chamber of Commerce will be deeply tarnished by their support of this blood sport.
  • The principles behind tournament/bounty systems are ecologically and socially flawed, and no federal or state wildlife agencies endorse this as a viable coyote management strategy.
  • If you live outside of Maine, convey that you will not be spending your tourist dollars in Jackman until they stop sponsoring coyote/predator killing contest hunts — and that you’ll encourage your friends and family to do the same.
  • Let them know that you believe that this “tournament” is ethically indefensible, ecologically reckless, and counter to sound scientific wildlife management. It is important to point out that this coyote slaughter is not hunting, and is in direct opposition to Maine’s long tradition of sustenance hunting.
  • As an area that prides itself on being a “working forest”, the Jackman-Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce should support forestry practices that will support adequate wintering habitat for deer – not scapegoating coyotes. As confirmed by state biologists and researchers, deer are suffering in Northern Maine from a loss of wintering habitat- not from predation.

2- Cc your letter/comments to (and call) Governor John Baldacci; urge him to tell the Jackman-Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce to call off the coyote killing “tournament” — in perpetuity (in 2005 Governor Baldacci came out against a coyote contest hunt in Washington County and directed the state Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife to tell “tournament” organizers to cancel the event because it was not an effective way to control the coyote population).

Uk: Campaign to Stop China From Introducing Bullfighting – Also Excellent Result in EU Court re ‘Human Rights’ and the Uk Ban on Hunting (an Existing Uk Law)

League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) Web Site Link:  www.league.org.uk

Stop China from introducing bullfighting!

The Chinese government plans to introduce bullfighting in the country.

A Spanish matador is already in charge of operations, with a shipment of bulls and cows for breeding planned for as soon as January.

The construction of a bull ring is also due to start in the New Year and be complete by October.

We need to act now!

China may want to support Spanish culture, but would only promote a cruel past time that the vast majority of Europeans abhor and that most Spaniards have no interest in.

STOP THIS EXPORT OF CRUELTY!

Join the League, Animal and CAS International and send an email to the Chinese President by clicking here and urge him to stop these plans.

Bullfighting is bad enough where it is, we can’t allow it to start in other countries.

Thank you for your help and best wishes.

PS  If you would like to donate to our campaigning work, please visit the League Against Cruel Sports website.  All donations will be gratefully received.

In a landmark legal ruling, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the Hunting Act does not breach human rights legislation.

The case, brought by the Countryside Alliance and Brian Friend, 70, of Axminster, rested on whether or not the Hunting Act 2004 breached the rights to a private and family life, freedom of association, and protection of property. The court rejected all arguments.

The court rejected arguments that the Hunting Act infringed an individual’s right to a private and family life on the basis that hunting is a public activity and it is not integral to an individual’s identity. The judgment also made clear that the ban on hunting had “not created serious difficulties for earning one’s living”.

Welcoming the ruling, Douglas Batchelor, Chief Executive of the League Against Cruel Sports said: “This is a victory for common sense. No-one has the right to chase and kill animals purely for sport. The Hunting Act is a landmark piece of animal welfare legislation and today’s decision sends a clear message to politicians and the hunting community alike that the ban on hunting is here to stay.”

An Ipsos-MORI poll in September found that 75% of the public support the ban on fox hunting, and 84% and 85% support the ban on stag hunting and hare hunting respectively.

Petition Wording:

A Request for Royal Intervention to Save and Protect the Animals of Morocco

Target:

His Majesty King Mohammed VI Of Morocco

Sponsored by:

Serbian Animals Voice https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/

To request direct intervention by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to prevent the terrible suffering of animals throughout Morocco.

With intervention by His Majesty to greatly improve animal welfare in Morocco, we feel that this would greatly attract many more tourists to the country – tourists who have recently been shocked by the terrible treatment of animals and who will never return because of what they have seen.

Your Majesty King Mohammed VI,

Many of the signators of the petition which is presented here are citizens from around the World who have visited Morocco for their holiday(s).

Whilst very much enjoying their stay in Morocco, many of them have been deeply shocked by witnessing the terrible suffering inflicted on many animals %u2013 donkeys and horses are left standing and hobbled in the midday sun while their owners rest in the shade; and the terrible condition of harnesses which these animals are fitted with, very often comprising terrible wooden homemade yokes which are not adequate or suitable for the work which the animals are expected to undertake.

Animals are also regularly seen to have ulcerated eyes and open and festering wounds to many parts of their bodies; despite this, they are still beaten by the owners with wooden sticks the thickness of a young childs arm.

Cows are tethered on the back of trucks with ropes less than 6 inches (15cm) long; they are left standing in the blazing sun for hours at a time, crying out for water and shade.

Throughout most towns and cities in Morocco, street animals (cats and dogs) suffer most terribly.  Local authorities are poisoning stray dogs and cats on a nightly basis using Strychnine poison put onto scraps of food to lure (bait) the animals.  They die long and terrible deaths as a result of eating this bait.  Please see petition photo which shows a dog in the City of Khenifra that has been poisoned using Strychnine.

Dogs and cats very close to Marrakech (within a 30km radius) are now being killed with Strychnine poison.  In several cities, dogs are also being killed by gunshot.  Unfortunately, some of them are still alive when they are buried.

We call on you sir, Your Majesty, to please act immediately and stop the daily abuses suffered by the majority of animals throughout Morocco.

Your majesty, you are a kind and compassionate man; we ask that your compassion be given to other living beings.

We have faith Sir that this petition will result in your intervention which will help the animals of Morocco being treated with more care and respect.

Thank You very much, Your Majesty.

European Union Enlargement Commissioner: Olli Rehn

Sponsored by:

Serbian Animals Voice (SAV)  https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/

loz1

Several Balkans states are now seeking either full membership (Accession) to the European Union (EU), or are attempting stronger links with the EU.

These include:  Republic of Macedonia,  Montenegro,  Serbia,  Bosnia
and Herzegovina,  Croatia and Kosovo.

Serbian Animals Voice (SAV) has been campaigning for the improved welfare of Balkans animals for several years.  We have extensive experience and data relating to the terrible daily suffering inflicted on animals, despite existing Balkan states national legislation which should legally prevent much of this.  There is very little evidence to show political and municipal authority enforcement of animal welfare legislation. %u2013 details of this on a %u2018nation by nation%u2019 basis can be seen via our site at https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/

In October 2009, SAV wrote to Commissioner Olli Rehn; EU Commissioner for Enlargement, expressing our deep concerns regarding an apparent lack of existing national animal welfare legislation implementation and enforcement by governments throughout the Balkan states.

Over 25 prime evidence links from the SAV site were provided to Commissioner Rehn, each of these containing many sub links, showing extreme Balkans animal suffering video footage which relate to our concerns.  A few examples are shown in the following links –

**WARNING Graphic Animal Suffering**:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZSXlSH4pEA&feature=channel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sewZvVbQro0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAEfxbysd_Y&feature=channel

We have expressed our concerns to the Commissioner, that even when provided with such evidence, clearly showing extreme animal abuses, nothing with regard investigation and prosecution is being followed up by the Balkans authorities to press charges; to enforce (the) often existing national animal welfare legislation.  In Serbia for example, the Public Attorney appears to be dismissing all evidence provided by animal welfare campaigners; instead, they themselves are themselves being accused of obstructing them (the Public Attorney) from getting on with their legal work.

In our letter, we have reminded Commissioner Rehn that (on his website) his very own words declare:

The European Union currently has 27 Member States. The Western Balkan countries, Turkey and Iceland may also join once they meet the conditions for membership. The aim of enlargement is simple: to extend the area of peace, stability, democracy and the rule of law, and prosperity and well-being throughout Europe.

We draw particular attention to the statement by Commissioner Rehn of – democracy and the rule of law, as it is felt that despite Serbian animal welfare campaigners providing large amounts of evidence to Serbian legislators, no action appears to ever be taken by Serbian authorities to apply the rule of law, a fundamental condition necessary for EU membership.

If no action (in the form of prosecutions against animal cruelty) is being shown to be taken by Serbian legislators following the production of evidence and documented requests by animal welfare campaigners, then we declare that Serbia is not meeting some of the necessary and fundamental aims of EU enlargement with regard showing the implementation of both democracy (ie. requests by animal welfare campaigners) and the rule of law (ie. by not prosecuting perpetrators of causing animal suffering), even when evidence is provided.

As a consequence, Signators of this petion request that Commissioner Rehn now fully investigates if there is actually any animal welfare legislation enforcement by Balkans states requiring EU membership prior to them being granted official EU membership.  Or is animal welfare legislation implementation simply being ignored.

We request the implementation of democracy and the rule of law for all animal welfare issues within Balkans states at all times prior to their EU Accession.  Where this is not happening, we rquest the EU demands it prior to accession.

After years of taking action and being able to put the finger on grave infringements and acts of abuse by going undercover, we have finally persuaded e few European MP’s to present  a written question, in European Parliament, in a walk towards the introduction of a new text of law that will put an end to all these acts of cruelty.

As a result of the expansion of the EEC we will be needing more signatures to find a majority of MEP’s who favour the new text of law. Fortunately we find that there are animal friends  throughout all parties across all borders who are willing to help us to convince the members of their own parties to vote in favour of animal rights.

We can achieve this only by petitioning and sending letters to ALL these MEP’s.

To have an easy access to all these letters we’ve had Hubert set up a user friendly system:

only the e-mail adresses listed are valid since the whole file has been updated.

– you click onto the countries and a new mail, including all adresses, will be provided.

– you can send your own personalized letter or you can use, sign and send the model we provide.

We are counting on you to send these mails by massive numbers to show that we are behind this, as Europeans, and to put pressure on the European Parliament as a whole.

This mail will be spread all over Europe and a follow-up will be done through the web-site of www.Beestjes.org.

On the web-site you can see which MEP’s have signed already ( the list will be updated regularly ), so you can go on mailing those who haven’t done so, yet.

We cannot afford to pass up on this opportunity and let go to waste all the efforts of the past years as happened to us on the issue of the contested bull-fights.

Please make an effort to spread this mail as wide as possible to sites, contact groups, blogs, etc.

THERE’S NO TIME TO WASTE. WE ARE COUNTING ON YOU!

SAMPLE LETTER FOLLOWS

Dear Madam,

Dear Sir,

As you are certainly well aware of, every year more than 54 million animals are sacrificed in  all kind of experiments.  These animals are made to suffer and end up being killed. This is inhuman and cruel and it is absolutely necessary that all possible efforts are made to use methods that do not involve animals.

As citizens of the EU we need your help to protect as much as possible of these animals and therefore we are urging you to sign the Written Declaration on the promotion  of alternatives to animal research and testing  53/2009 ,and help us convince your colleagues to do the same.

We specifically demand that more money will be made available by the EU for scientific research into alternative testing methods to replace the cruel and inhumane testing currently performed upon animals. To make this possible, we must find 50%  of all European MP’s prepared to sign this Written Declaration 53/2009. If we fail to do so the issue will, again, be abandoned and be pushed ahead of us by a length of time. Time, we feel, we don’t have.

Please, this is VERY IMPORTANT!

The Written Declaration must be signed BEFORE 20 JANUARY 2010!

These animals are depending upon you!

The names of those members of the  EU parliament who signed this declaration will be published on several websites.

Thank you for your time and for taking an interest in this issue.

Sincerely yours,

A.U.B. dit is zeer belangrijk! De Schriftelijke Verklaring moet getekend zijn voor 20 januari 2010. De dieren rekenen op u.

Wij danken u alvast voor uw medewerking.

Met vriendelijke groeten.

Uk: Give Your Support to Fight Against a (Conservative Party) Repeal of The Hunting Act

The Result of Hunting British Wildlife – Kent, England. – Photo SAV.

The next general election in the United Kingdom (Uk) must be held on or before Thursday 3 June 2010.  This will decide who will be the next government (and opposition party).

Source:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_United_Kingdom_general_election

The British people have always been a nation who are on the whole, very animal welfare supportive

As an Englishman, it is a tradition which I am very proud of.

I would like to introduce the following excellent campaign which has now been established in the Uk ready for the 2010 general election.

Please lend you support to this important new initiative set up as part of the fight against a repeal of the hunting act.  Ie. To KEEP hunting where it belongs – in the history books.

We really need to get everyone signing up to this list so we can lobby MPs and candidates during the campaign.

SIGN UP  ***  The address is:  www.campaignfordecency.org.uk   ***

Please pass this message far and wide

CIA Team

There will come a day when such men as myself will view the slaughter of innocent creatures as horrible a crime as the murder of his fellow man – Our task must to be free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. Albert Einstein

Polls reveal that over 75% of the British public do not support a repeal of the hunting act. We believe this is an accurate reflection of a society that does not want to see a return to their cruel and barbaric past.

On the 15th September 2004, the MP’s listed in the link below voted Against the Hunting Bill in an attempt to prevent the ban on Hunting from being passed into law. Many of them are still MP’s and are intending to stand in the 2010 General election.

You can see from the list that the overwhelming majority of politicians supporting the call for allowing hunting TO CONTINUE were / are members of the Conservative Party

Fortunately, the Conservatives are the opposition (Non Government) party in the Uk at the current time.  Long may it remain that way.  The Conservative party has declared that if elected into government in the 2010 general election, it will repeal (bring back) the legislation about hunting, so allowing British Wildlife animals to be hunted yet again.

Fox Myths – The hunting community has played a key role in vilifying foxes for their own purposes.  Click on the following for more info:

http://www.campaignfordecency.org.uk/Myths

The following photo is from SAV files; it was taken by SAV founders during the mid 1990’s and shows a fox which was killed by the hunt in the county of Kent, England.

Never before have we (SAV) released this image; but now it is necessary.  It shows the real side of foxhunting; the side that puts the ‘they die of a quick bite to the neck’ into the bin.

As shown here, hunted foxes are literally ripped apart whilst still alive by foxhounds of the hunt.

Voting Conservative at the 2010 election will bring this animal abuse back to the fields of the Uk; and the vast majority of British people DO NOT WANT IT ever again.

So please, sign up for decency and the CONTINUATION of enforcement of the Hunting Ban in the Uk:

www.campaignfordecency.org.uk

A return to a Conservative government is a return to this:

FOR FOX SAKE, fight against a Conservative Party repeal of the hunting act.

Thank You – SAV.
