Arturo, Argentina’s only living polar bear, lives in a place where temperatures regularly soar to 40 degrees Celsius.

Yet the Mendoza Zoo refuses to let him go to Canada.

Arturo the polar bear lives in a concrete enclosure by himself at the Mendoza Zoo in Argentina.

Temperatures in the area can regularly soar to more than 40 degrees Celsius. — and Arturo’s only access to water is a pool roughly a foot and a half deep. Arturo deserves to live out his remaining days in a place where he can keep cool!

By polar bear standards, Arturo is elderly at the age of 29. And he’s lonely, too. After his companion died two years ago, Arturo has been experiencing signs of stress and even depression. He rocks back and forth in his pen, pacing and baring his teeth: signs, some animal behaviourists say, that he might be succumbing to mental illness.

So far, the Mendoza Zoo has blocked Arturo’s transfer to Canada’s International Polar Bear Conservation Centre as they say he is too old to travel. But this could be the bear’s only chance at a happy, healthy life.

Ask Mendoza to stop Arturo’s suffering and send him to Canada, where he can grow old in comfort and peace.

We ask that you exercise your authority so the polar bear Arturo, who lives in deplorable conditions in the Mendoza Zoo, is moved to Assiniboine Park Zoo in Canada, where a natural habitat and a better life are awaiting him. We plead that you intervene on this issue and ask the officials in Mendoza who have the polar bear Arturo prisoner to accept Arturo’s transfer to the reserve so he can live in suitable conditions. In December 2012, a polar bear died in Buenos Aires due to heat, causing unease in Argentina and in the international community. After this death, refusal to transfer Arturo causes scandal in the world and Mendoza is becoming sadly famous for this, exporting an image of a retrograde province. Say No to death and suffering! Help Mendoza be part of change, be part of the future. Help Mendoza go back to being good news to the world! Aditional information The Association of Zoos and Aquariums in its Polar Bear Care Manual dictates that “great care should be taken to monitor the interaction between high temperatures and high humidity”, “Techniques to raise or lower humidity within indoor and outdoor exhibits include …. pools in which the bears can swim.” As you can see, Arturo hasn’t been able to swim for 28 years. It also dictates in Article 1.3: “institutions must have a regular program of monitoring water quality for polar bear pools and a written record must document long-term water quality results and chemical additions (AZA Accreditation Standard 1.5.9). Monitoring selected water quality parameters provides confirmation of the correct operation of filtration and disinfection of the water supply available for the animals. Additionally, high quality water enhances animal health programs instituted for polar bears” As you can also see here, this seems to be non important to the Authorities in Mendoza, Arturo´s pool is fill with stagnant water.

We ask you please to give your full support to the work being undertaken in Subotica by NGO’s to help solve the problem of un-sterilised owned and stray dogs.

As we always say, sterilization and identification marking of stray animals is the first step to long term numbers reduction.  Just as important is public education – that owned dogs need to be sterilized by their owners, and they should not turn unsterilized animals out onto the streets every day to reproduce with non sterilized stray / street animals.

It would take little to introduce a public education programme showing that owned animal sterilisation is so important to te long term reduction of stray animals on the streets – animals which suffer terribly.

On July 3,2014. a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed between the city of Subotica and NGO “Anima Subotica” about solving the problem of stray dogs on the streets of this city. On this occasion, the Association for the Protection of Animals “Pets Are Worth Saving”, “EPAR – OIPA SERBIA / Alliance for the Conservation of Nature, animal rights and the rights of the people, and the Society for the Protection of Animals, “Alex”, Asylum Alex sent an open letter to the mayor of Subotica, the Minister of agriculture RS, Director of veterinary directorate, veterinary inspection and the general public pointing out certain shortcomings and incompleteness of this Memorandum which only seemingly solves the problem of stray dogs, without concluding and providing concrete ways for the long-term solution and elimination of the real source of stray dogs and cats.

We hereby request the cancellation of this Memorandum making it an illegal act because it allows the continuance of irresponsible owners and keepers of pets and illegal treatment of animals and public money.

SOCIETIES FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS REQUEST CANCELLATION OF MEMORANDUM Association for the Protection of Animals “Pets Are Worth Saving”, EPAR Serbia, Alex and injured party citizens sent an open letter and the public request for the cancellation of the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the City of Subotica and the Association of Citizens “Anima Subotica”. The request states that the Memorandum is considered incomplete and they demand its cancellation, because it allows the survival of irresponsible pet owners.

“Anima Subotica” did not want to comment on the negative reactions of these associations, because they believe they work for the benefit of animals, they treat every animal taken off the streets, sterilize and manage to find a home for it and do not return it back to the street. They consider asylums or shelters are not a solution, but only sterilization, education, responsible ownership, punishing irresponsible owners, as well as mandatory micro-chipping.

If they consider asylums or shelters are not solutions then why did they sign the Memorandum whose Clause 5 states “building shelters and improving conditions in existing shelters”?
The same Clause states “killing dogs in a humane way in accordance with the law”. We all know how public shelters kill their dogs in Serbia. We’ve seen lots of horror photos and we definitely wouldn’t sign that Memorandum. Would you?

Also there is nowhere to be found in Memorandum any word of punishing the irresponsible owners. That is why we are calling this Memorandum incomplete. Some parts are missing and some Don’t Benefit Animals At All!!

Dear supporters,

Thank you all very much for signing this petition and giving your support to stray animals on the streets of Subotica.

On July 13 EPAR / Alliance for the Conservation of nature, animal rights and the rights of people sent a request to the Mayor asking him for a copy of the document to see what he has done on our request for the cancellation of the illegal Memorandum signed on July 3rd since we know there are no initial conditions for the fulfillment of this Act for the following reasons:

1. There is no legal asylum in the city Subotica which could shelter 900 animals abandoned on the streets EVERY YEAR by the irresponsible owners.

2. Euthanasia of the healthy pets as a measure to reduce the number of stray animal population is prohibited by Law and is punishable by up to three years in prison.

3. Without legal asylum in Subotica, transportation of captured dogs to other cities across Serbia is inconsistent with Law because other municipalities have the same problem with abandoned animals and irresponsible owners.

4. Re-homing of animals can not reduce the No. of stray cats and dogs because the rhythm of new abandoned animals far outweighs the rhythm of re-homed ones. By signing this Memorandum Mayor gave support to the illegal treatment of abandoned pets in Subotica and to the public money which will be used to carry out the illegal process at the expense of citizens and animals, but for the benefit of a small group of people.

OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR DEBLASIO

Enough is enough. When will the ban happen?

I recently wrote this Open Letter to Mayor deBlasio imploring him to keep his promise and ban the horse-drawn carriage trade. These are some excerpts: “This has gone on too long. The horses are suffering in the heat and humidity and the public has not seen any sign of movement toward a ban. You were the first mayoral candidate ever to take animal cruelty seriously, or so it seemed–and many of us volunteered in your campaign office, showing up at every debate to cheer you on and proclaim our support for a humane mayor. So what happened? Why has this been put on the back burner? Bills, public hearings and more debates will take this into next year at least. This is not what any of us expected or supported.”

“By stalling and not owning this issue you have allowed the Daily News to control the dialogue and negatively influence public opinion, which resulted in unfavorable polling–literally turning the percentages around against us. Before the Daily News began this onslaught, every poll taken consistently showed 75 to 80% of respondents in favor of a ban. This is a consequence of a deliberate campaign of misinformation, all driven by an editorial board that is feeling the sting of political defeat. This newspaper is not your friend and is not the horses’ friend. It is using this issue as a metaphor for your progressive agenda. Please understand this. If the Daily News wins on this issue, they will look for others on which to defeat you. Please ban this inhumane and unsafe business now.”

Mayor deBlasio and his administration have not handled this issue well. They have “fiddled while Rome burnt.” He did not own the issue. He never mentioned the horses who have made press during his first six months in office: Blondie, Spartacus, Ceasar and Pumpkin. We wanted him to address the many bogus criticisms the press threw at him but he ignored them until they got legs of their own. His comments have gone from “But we are going to quickly and aggressively move to make horse carriages no longer a part of the landscape … They are not humane, they are not appropriate for the year 2014. It’s over. So, just watch us do it.” said in December 2013 – TO – a statement said just last week: “Now we’re going to turn to a series of new priorities, and certainly I’ve said many times, and I’ll say it again: I think we need to ban horse carriages in New York City and we’re going to act accordingly,” We’re working on the details now with the City Council, but clearly there’s going to be a legislative process.” It’s over. DRIVERS ACCUSE ACTIVISTS OF THREATS

Drivers will stop at nothing with their lies; contrived Facebook pages

The NYC media, for the most part, supports the drivers and all their lies. NY1 is no different. The most recent lie is saying that activists are threatening Christina Hansen after she worked her horse for a long period of time past the heat suspension. NY 1’s Josh Robin gave Hansen screen time with his article Carriage Driver Accused of Working Horse in Hot Weather Says She’s Being Threatened With Violence. He included a Facebook or Tweet comment, which Hansen had provided to him. I sent Robin an e-mail asking him for verification that it was authentic. I did not hear from him. Robin did not even use the word “alleged” threat. He simply took Hansen’s word for it. Very unprofessional reporting.

A supporter of the carriage trade posted this screen print of comments on our Facebook page, No Walk in the Park. We saved and deleted it from the page. As it turns out, these same comments were provided to Josh Robin by the carriage supporters. We think that is very odd AND a set up. The comments are vile and we do not believe they are genuine. We know none of the people and we do not know the origin. I checked with some of other pro carriage ban pages and it did not originate with them either.

We believe these comments are photo shopped or in some way contrived to make us look bad. The drivers and their supporters have been known to make up fake names on Facebook in order to post on our pages since we have banned many of them. If anyone knows any of these people, let us know. We do not condone this kind of behavior. We prefer to fight this issue on its merits – not on gratuitous, nasty comments that have nothing to do with the horses.

bogus polls tell differently – don’t believe them

BOGUS: polls showing 60% of people opposed to a carriage horse ban – Since 2006, every poll taken about a carriage horse ban has shown between 75 and 80% of respondents in favor of a ban. So what happened? In a nutshell – the Daily News has been allowed to control the dialogue with their half truths, specious omissions and outright lies. This is not the way a newspaper is supposed to behave. If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth – Often attributed to the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, it has a lot of truth and should be fair warning to thinkers that the same thing is happening in NYC.

Mayor deBlasio won the mayoral primary in September but he was not endorsed by any of the local newspapers. The editorial boards in NYC are mostly right wing conservative and were not happy about this. The Daily News began a hatched job on the mayor – ripping into him almost every day – publishing the most bizarre yellow journalism articles filled with lies and exaggerations. Mort Zuckerman had enjoyed privileges at City Hall under Mayor Bloomberg that he expected to continue under a Quinn administration. When it seemed that Mayor deBlasio was serious about banning the horse-drawn carriages, The DN took the lead on this issue going so far as to launch a petition. The editor in chief of the DN is a transplant from Rupurt Murdoch’s failed UK paper. Other editorial boards, including the NY Times, NY Post, AM-NY and TV stations like Fox News, NY1, and Pix 11 followed. Many reporters have continued to promote the drivers’ lies as their opinions shift into supposedly fact driven articles. The carriage trade hired the infamous anti-animal Cavalry Group to fight this battle for them. This is the anti-animal lobby group that supports puppy mills, horse slaughter and a weakening of animal cruelty laws around the country. The Teamsters have also joined the fray, going against the first pro union mayor in decades – a very foolish action. There’s been no fact checking, no investigative journalism and gratuitous dishonesty. Unfortunately, people will often believe what they hear on TV or read in the newspapers without questioning. This is why the media is so powerful. We have been cut out of interviews and ignored. The truth about this inhumane and very unsafe industry is not getting out there.

The Daily News does not care about the horses or the drivers. Instead, they are being used as poster children – a metaphor for deBlasio’s progressive agenda. If the right wing media can get deBlasio to cry uncle on this issue, this will open the door to other things. And he will likely lose the next election because he flip flopped. So when you hear about the Quinnipiac poll showing 60% of respondents opposed to a ban – you must also realize that these polls were taken after an extended brainwashing period. Polls like this are meaningless to critical thinkers.

Will Mayor deBlasio be strong enough to stand up to this and keep his word — or will he cave? Only time will tell. Do you want Mort Zuckerman/disgruntled Daily News owner; the Teamsters; Liam Neeson; and the carriage drivers running NYC – or do you want the man you voted for – Mayor deBlasio?Please wake up to this. Following a letter we sent to the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, the United Nations demanded that China accounts for their fates

In response, China has had to provide new information about their cases and has confirmed that most of the musicians have been jailed for “separatist” activities – because China believed their songs challenged its rule.

China revealed that Gongpo Tsezin had been released on bail because of “several illnesses he suffers”. Recently another singer, Gebe, was released within a month of his arrest.

Today we paid a visit to STA Travel’s flagship store in London, Victoria with ‘Bully’ the bull to ask them why they are still promoting the cruel Pamplona fiesta – Watch what happened here

Six weeks ago we contacted STA Travel about their promotion of the Pamplona Bull Run and bullfighting. We pointed out how they are not abiding by the ABTA Animal Welfare Guidelines, of which they are signed up to and called for them to stop selling trips from 2015 and talk to us now about the issues.
The company has however refused to talk to us, aside from one tweet last week. As such we decided to book an appointment to see them in their flagship store today. 

Despite STA saying on Friday that they were reviewing packages and not selling trips to Pamplona a member of our staff, pretending to be an interested customer, was offered a trip to the festival on sale and also their ‘Europe 2014’ brochures are still in store with five different Pamplona trips promoted. 
Our friend ‘Bully’ the bull then joined and we revealed we were from the League. We handed over a copy of ABTA’s animal welfare guidelines and yet another request to meet with their CEO.

Bull Running Festivals

The ‘running of the bulls’ is a practice which involves letting loose up to a dozen bulls to run with and in front of thousands of jeering crowds along a designated route to their final destination, the bull ring. 

The Sanfermines or Pamplona bull run is the most publicised bull run which attracts thousands of International tourists each year, but there are bull runs and bull running festivals which operate in many towns and countries across Spain and Mexico, and in many other countries such as Portugal, Peru, Nevada, France, California and more recently Arizona.

The Pamplona Bull Run

The Pamplona Bull Run takes place during the San Fermin festival in Spain every year between the 6th July and 14th July. This year’s campaign against this cruel festival has seen the League appeal to the student travel operator, STA Travel asking them to stop promoting and selling trips to the festival through their supplier TopDeck Travel. 
STA Travel are an ABTA member and despite being signed up to ABTA’s Animal Welfare Guidelines, which deem bull running and bullfighting as ‘unacceptable practices involving animals in cultural events and activities’, are still confusingly selling packages that support tourist attendance at the Pamplona Bull Run. 
We have written to them to ask them why they do this. We have called them. We have emailed them. But they refuse to talk to us about why they continue to support bull running and bullfighting, knowing full well it is in breach of the Guidelines.  

So we need your help

Please contact STA now ahead of the festival starting on Sunday, and ask them to do the right thing and stop promoting Pamplona Running of the Bulls.
Each morning bulls are forced to run a kilometre down the cobblestone streets of the town, chased by cheering participants and spectators. Once released, the bulls are frightened with gun shots, electrocuted with cattle prods and kicked and hit by jeering spectators, often down concrete or cobbled streets which they slip and slide on, suffering broken legs and other injuries in the process. 

The bulls are chased into a holding pen at the bull ring, to await their deaths at the bullfights, during the ‘corrida de toros’ that take place later that evening. Whilst in the holding pens some may be subjected to further ‘weakening’ which can involve the shaving of their horns (an excruciating process which leaves them disorientated and more sensitive to pain), being debilitated with laxatives, having vaseline rubbed into their eyes to impair vision, and by being drugged. 

In front of jeering crowds, the bulls are then tortured and antagonised by the matadors on horseback, waving flags and repeatedly stabbing the confused animals in the neck and back. The injured, bleeding bull, weakened and exhausted, is then killed with a sword by the picador.

If the animal is not killed immediately, it is stabbed repeatedly until paralysed. When the bull finally collapses, its spinal cord is cut, but the animal may still be conscious as its ears and tail are cut off and kept as a ‘trophies’.
Bull fights and fiestas attract people from all over the world; including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America and Europe, including the UK. Many are unaware of the bulls’ fate after the initial ‘running’. Frustratingly, revenue generated from curious tourists ensures the survival of fiestas such as San Fermin.

Even though the fiesta is often described by package selling tour operators as ‘a spectacle not to be missed’, the harsh reality is that the spectacle they are referring to is based on savagery and cruelty, with no regard for the welfare of the animals at the centre of the attention.

However, like many cruel sports, bullfighting and cruel fiestas continue to be justified by those involved as being part of the country’s history and culture. The League argues that this is a poor excuse for a practice that most people in Spain, the UK and around the world view as ritualised animal abuse.

The pro-bullfighting lobby would have us believe the faux ‘contest’ between a willing man and an unwilling bull is ‘art and culture, a magical rite of life, a just and honourable way of life where man and bull combine to create unique and unrepeatable moments’, an argument that couldn’t be further from the truth. 

Recently, the popular video sharing portal, YouTube, closed down channels devoted to Spain’s “national fiesta”, removing content showing bloody scenes of bulls being lanced by picadors, which it publically categorised as animal abuse.

We are asking for the public not to support this barbaric practice and to boycott any and all forms of bull running fiestas and bullfights, opting for a humane but yet exhilarating festival such as La Tomatina, coined the world’s biggest food fight, where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets, and no animals are hurt as a result.

Kendall Jones is using social media to document her hunting exploits in Africa, and outraged wildlife activists want to shut her down.

School’s out for the summer, but 19-year-old Texas Tech cheerleader Kendall Jones isn’t your average college student hustling at a corporate internship or grinding through a part-time job at the mall. Instead, the avid hunter has hauled her pink bow and arrow across the Atlantic to shoot lions, leopards, and zebras in South Africa. Thanks to Jones’ gruesome Facebook photos documenting the bloody summer spree (which she is apparently filming for a television show), wildlife activists are working to get the teen’s page banned from the social media site and her access to the continent revoked.  

Jones, who has a bright smile in every picture with a carcass, claims to be an animal advocate. “Hunters are the biggest conservationists there are,” she wrote on June 25 as a comment below the photo of her and a dead cheetah. “We want animal populations to grow and thrive!”

Never mind that fewer than 10,000 cheetahs are left in the wild and the animals have a notoriously difficult time reproducing in captivity.

The college sophomore grew up watching her father hunt and accompanied him on a hunting trip to Zimbabwe when she was nine. “As badly as I wanted to shoot something I was just too small to hold the guns my dad had brought,” wrote Jones on her page. She spent her time taking candy and toys to “under privileged children” instead.

But Jones was determined to become a trophy hunter. Unlike hunting duck or deer during a specific season to prevent overpopulation, wealthy animal hunters pay thousands of dollars to safari companies that organize opportunities to kill rare beasts. The animals that are shot are handed over to a taxidermist, who usually cuts off and preserves the head, which is then taken home as a trophy.

Advocates of the business claim that the money the hunters bring in helps bolster African economies while ensuring that native people take care of the animals and land. The logic is that if hunting is outlawed, no cash comes in and local folks will have no reason to maintain the animals’ habitat, which will cause the creatures to become extinct anyway. 

Jones got her first trophy in 2008 when she was 13. She headed back to South Africa to kill what safari hunting enthusiasts refer to as the big five game animals: lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and southern white rhinoceros. The rhino is considered a near threatened species; it was the first animal Jones ever shot.

The following year she headed out “on a 28 day safari and took an elephant with a shot from a .416 Remington and finished it off with my dad’s .470 Nitro Express,” Jones wrote. Two weeks after that trip she returned to Africa to kill a leopard and a hippo, both of which are considered vulnerable species. “I was lucky enough to have all of my hunting adventures professionally videoed and put onto DVD,” wrote Jones, who will be featured on a television show on the Sportsman Channel in 2015.  

Jones’ desire to be a reality TV star is what spurred Cape Town resident Keiron Brown to launch a Change.org petition asking African countries to ban the hunter. “She has publicly stated that she hopes to have a television hunting show and she is using endangered and helpless African animals as a stepping to further her popularity on social media platforms,” wrote Brown. So far more than 11,200 people have signed.

A petition on Avaaz.org is asking Facebook to delete Jones’ page because all the photos of her cheesing it up with dead wildlife promote animal cruelty. Nearly 60,000 individuals have expressed their support for it.

Hunting aficionados are rallying behind Jones. More than 40,000 people have “liked” her Facebook page over the past month. Like many big game hunters around the globe, the smiling teen feels no need to stop her activities. “I just want to THANK all of my supporters for their continued encouragement and backing!” wrote Jones on Tuesday. “I will continue to hunt and spread the knowledge of hunting and wildlife conservation.”

I arrived on the 6th of June to Favignana Island’s main port. We were walking to find a taxi when I heard a young kitten crying out after been kicked by a taxi driver who then jumped in his taxi and nearly reversed over it. I ran over and quickly realised the kitten who was only 3/4 weeks old had such a horrific eye infection it could not see and so bad her eyes were not visible. The kitten was blinded by the infection and was crying out for its mom across the road. The photo shows the kitten on the mother’s back as this was the only way of getting her around. I reunited the two and was shocked to look around and see so many malnourished stray cats and kitten.

I tried to find a vet but they don’t exist on the island, no one could help me and the locals advised this has been the situation for many years with most looking on and not doing anything about the problem. Thanks to the goodness of a kind volunteer on the main land this little kitten received medical help but yesterday evening it was confirmed to me the brave little kitten didn’t make it. So I want to make sure her life was not wasted and I want to petition on her behalf for all the other cats and kittens on the island. Please help bring an end to this horrific suffering by signing the petition below. Thanks kindly in advance..

Please help us get the support these animals need on Favignana island. I’m asking the mayor of Favignana island to help control the numbers of stray cats on the island by implementing a simply solution by arranging for a vet to visit the island once monthly to spay/neuter thus controlling the cat population and to check on their general health.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Until this is done more and more stray cats will multiple and many more will suffer like this kitten. Please sign this petition to tell the mayor of Favignana Island to resolve this horrific situation.
