Clustrmap Update – 10th March 2010.

Dear all;

you may have seen that our ‘site visitors’ map (global map on the left) and associated national index has changed in the last 24 hours.  Now it appears very sparse with red colouring.

This is a normal procedure as the system archives all the visitor data on an annual basis, and 10th March is ‘our archive’ day.

The great news is that we have had over 25,00 vistis to the site since 2008, and this last year (12 month period) alone saw in excess of 15,300 visits.

We will continue to update news and put out campaign data as often as possible.  SAV is an entirely volunteer run site and has to fit around other animal investigation work and also some specific things which are undertaken on behalf of other (Uk based) animal welfare organisations.

We welcome your comments, so please keep them coming !

With hopes that you will stick with us and be a real voice for the animals.

Looking forward to even bigger visitor numbers in the coming twelve months. Lets paint the map red with visitor ‘dots’  !!

Your assistance is needed to submit email letters to the Prefect of Dolj, Romania.

 The prefect is offering to propose or amend some articles of the Animal Protection Act. Unfortunately the only options being offered to “solve” the problem of stray dogs are adoption and euthanasia. In Romania, “euthanasia” is not reserved solely for the humane vet-administered means of ending a dog’s life; leaving poisoned food in the streets, clubbing dogs in a burlap bag, and shooting them are all considered “euthanasia”.

Irresponsible actions must be stopped. It is not true that there is no funding. Authorities can reallocate money spent on euthanasia campaigns to more humane and responsible campaigns, like spay/neuter. We have included two sample letters that you can use to email the Prefect of Dolj County. Please copy one of these letters (or write your own original statement) and paste it into an email addressed to either

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We, citizens of the world, many of whom are your co-nationals, kindly ask you to give a moment of reflection to our letter and our suggestions.

It has come to the attention of the entire international community (the whole world) the atrocities committed in your country against animals and because you are a Kennel Club we should underscore: against DOGS. It is of the utmost importance to remember that all dogs have a common ancestor.

Discrimination against non-pure breed dogs is as outrageous as discrimination against people. For the restoration of the image of your country and your people (excluding those extraordinary people who dedicated their lives to save and protect animals) which has been tarnished by the barbaric acts of cruelty please consider the following.

1. Please join all rescue groups in your country, all animal welfare associations, all good people to lobby your government to introduce better laws for the protection of animals and to IMPLEMENT it.

2. Please suggest to all your affiliates (national groups, local, regional associations) including individual members to adopt a stray dog (in their hometown). Where one pure breed dog can find love, food and shelter, there should be enough Love, Food and Shelter for just one more Dog. (Remember how we used to feed our pets during the communist regime: leftovers from our meals and we all were happy?)

3. Please consider donating a percentage of the revenue from Dog Shows to Romanian Animal Welfare Associations.

4. Please edit and publish a pamphlet and distribute it to the public attending dog shows in Romania, advising people to adopt a dog, (regular dog) to spay/neuter.

5. Please advise your international guests to also adopt a dog after a dog show. This could be the most rewarding “souvenir” from Romania–a dog who will love you unconditionally.

6. Please, as an internationally recognized association, start a petition to stop your government from killing stray dogs and to (again) introduce and implement better laws for the protection of animals and implicitly harsher punishments for the violators of this law.

When the image of your country and people have been tarnished so badly world wide, it will look like some kind of quiet complicity, which we hope is not the case.

Be a pioneer in this noble world- wide struggle to improve the life of animals in your country, and your example will be followed by other countries and you will have the entire world on your side.

We thank you very much for the time you accorded to our letter. We hope that you will join us, be a voice for the voiceless, as we are a voice for the voiceless who have the same rights as all human beings: To live in peace on our planet.

To Whom It Concern,

It has come to my attention that your community officials have proposed a decidedly cruel and exploitative manner to reduce “homeless” animal numbers. In efforts to curtail a stray population, you are challenging any security extended to animals as stipulated in the Animal Protection Act, and are instead recommending an immediate and public slaughter to address this issue. I am asking that you cease such a barbaric plan.

Please allow me to elaborate. While all countries engage in animal production, distinguishing animals as commodities rather than sentient beings, progressive governments are promoting greater visibility to preclude allegations of misconduct and brutality. Unfortunately, you are asking that the global audience apathetically regard this proposed killing as a necessary and logical solution. Addressing animals as targets of abuse is inherently inhumane and barbaric, given that it substantiates the precept of animals as products, speciesism, rather than fundamentally equal and deserving of compassion, free from exploitation and suffering. To aspire to such a principled and equitable foundation should be the goal of all societies, and you should thus refuse participation in any event that incurs such cruelty on animals, and in this situation particularly cats and dogs who hold such international recognition, respect, and compassion.

Rather than choose complicity in the savage treatment of animals, your communities can avoid any potential global boycotts of tourism within Romania as well as Romanian exports, by observing compassion instead. This can be achieved by establishing and practicing humane animal welfare standards, including the immediate cessation of random and vicious poisonings, law enforcement freedom to investigate perpetrators of crimes against animals, strict penalties for those guilty of harming animals, and shelters for spaying, neutering, and medical purposes. Furthermore, I ask that you be willing to accept volunteer and international assistance, and to cultivate an ideal societal philosophy with regard to animals: One that acknowledges animals as sentient beings, like humans, and worthy of empathy, compassion, and respect.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

Italy: Please Take Action NOW for the ‘Canile’ Dogs – Sample Letter and E mail Addresses Included in Post

Update 01/03/10:

It has been noted that campaigners have been having some problems with regard the one large e mail listing originally provided.

We have been in contact with the originator of this listing and we can confirm that there should not be any problems with the addresses given; all have been checked and are ok.

But there may be a problem if all are copied en masse and sent in just one block.  So what will be seen below now is that the one original block listing has been divided into three blocks.

It is a little more work on your part, but now it is asked if the sample letter can be sent out three times; in accordance with the addresses in each block below.

It is hoped that this will make life easier and that all the mails will be delived without any comeback or failure errors.  If there are still failures, then at least the problem addresses can be traced down to one address or some of those in (any one of) the smaller blocks which make up the three. 

This three block mail route has been checked out as a trial today (01/03) and there have not been any problems.  It is hoped that you do not encounter any.

Dear  Madame or Sir,

You are representing your country and its  interests abroad. I think you might feel concerned about a serious topic which throws a negative light on Italy.

The disastrous situation in regard to abandoned dogs in the so called “canile” makes me and many people around me think twice about going on holiday to Italy, even to buy any Italian products. There is no doubt that the terrible and disgusting so called  “concentration camps” for dogs is bound to profit from thirst for money.

Catching dogs and keeping them in terrible conditions bring millions to some people who pursue this bloody business in collaboration with local politicians.

Why does Italy not spend that money on neutering or sterilization of dogs so as to stop their uncontrolled breeding ?

Any normal human being who has seen the cruelty of Italian dogs in these places can never again feel at comfort while travelling to Italy or buying Italian products.

Who would be able to still enjoy a holiday in Italy or take pleasure on eating Italian dishes and drinking Italian wine while having knowledge of incredible pain and sorrow which dogs in canile must endure?!  The only fault of these dogs is to have been born as dogs in Italy – a country that apparently does not care at all for animals.

 Italy, the land of Christianity, the residence of the Pope, the land of Canile! Canile, where unbearable suffering of dogs feeds the ever growing greed for money.

It is hard to believe that those beautiful Italian people with their beautiful culture, beautiful music and beautiful seaside, who go on Sundays to their beautiful churches and send their prayers to God are treating their dogs in a way that even an animal itself would not do.

More and more people realize what is going on and there will be accountability sooner or later. And there is  no  way  to completely hide this hell no matter how many people are involved.

They keep  the gates of canile shut for visitors, they employ foreigners who fear for their jobs, they drive away animal helpers from abroad.

I myself, am determined not to travel to Italy or to buy anything it comes from Italy until canile is replaced by animal shelters where dogs are treated well. Until then I will certainly do everything I can to let as many people as possible know what is going on in “bella Italia”.

So, if you really want to make a difference, then do it right now!

once again the end of the Spanish hunting season is upon us, and what happens to Galgos who have not “performed” or otherwise fulfilled the expectations of their owners ?

They are disposed of by hanging them on trees (or whatever other means comes to hand), so their feet barely touch the ground to perish, slowly suffocating for many hours, even days.

There is a term in Spain apparently for this: “piano playing”, “piano players” – after the way the animals struggle desperately to free themselves – usually in vain …

I can assure you – have seen these horrendous pictures of hung Galgos for many years now. And I am sick of it to a point that defies description.

WHY do authorities still turn a blind eye to these atrocities, when organisations in and outside of Spain have highlighted this for many years and demanded that it be stopped ???

Is this yet another of Spain’s hallowed traditions that the populace is loath to let go, like the bull fights ? A manly ritual designed to bolster the feeling of dominance over defenceless animals in a society that still has need of such archaic “traditions” ??

Spain in the 21st century ???

I demand of you, and your govermment, Sir, that immediate steps be taken to once and for all commit this impossible outrage against all that God ever demanded of us in terms of compassion to ALL HIS CREATURES to history !!!

There is NO excuse for it, never was. Spain has much to lose from tolerating such behaviour from people that do definitely NOT represent anything a country like yours should be proud of.

Macedonia: 16/02/10 Update – Still No Change – Your MASSIVE Action and Support Now Needed – Please Read On ….

As you can see from the letter sent to us on 16/02/10, things are not changing in Macedonia, despite the wishes of the public for the authorities to show much more compassion.  The wishes of the people of Macedonia are being ignored by the Macedonian authorities.

The following is a direct copy of the letter received on 16/02/10 by SAV, from Macedonian campaigners: 

Dear friend of animals,We ask for your help again in order to stop the massive killing of the homeless dogs and the inhuman treatment in Skopje, in the holding facility Vardarishte.  

Despite all efforts to change the condition, nothing has been changed for better, there is no consideration for the reactions by the Macedonian citizens who are disgusted from the principle of massive killings, disgusted from the standards for the dogs stay in the holding facility Vardarishte, disappointed from the functioning of the facility.   

   

Although as a public institution it is obligated to operate transparently in front of the citizens, it hides public data, it is closed for public and for visits, except for the total 6 hours per week (of which 3h on Friday, from 9-12h when people are at work), there is prohibition of free movement within it, the recording and photographing are the most strictly prohibited in order for the glamorous camp photo of the 21st century not to be seen.  

1. Currently, in the holding facility almost all small puppies are dying from freezing, pneumonia, viruses, because it is very cold and temperatures are below 0, and the holding facility is half closed type of facility, without any possibilities for working in winter!  

And the few dogs that have surgery done / sterilized, die because they are outside, freezing. The dogs lie on frozen water, frozen concrete, with no place to hide or get warm even for a moment. They continue washing the cages with heavy flows of water, without removing the dogs from cages. The dogs stay in the cages and die in tremendous torments!  

Simultaneously continues the practice of massive killing, officially around 70%, unofficially much more.  

 

2. People who catch dogs are completely incompetent, rude bullies (with the exception of maximum 5 out of 36 dog catchers). Hunting massively, saying that there won’t be any dog on the streets, not even leaving the dogs that are quiet and for whom the people take care of, vaccinated, sterilized….They say that it has been ordered and that every stray dog is to be caught – believe it, there is massacre and genocide, and only in Skopje there are around 10 000 homeless dogs! 

 

3. The dog-catchers also carry bats while catching, going in 8 teams, in three shifts, with unmark vehicles, massively and roughly catching a part of the dogs, and part of the dogs they don’t even take them to the holding facility but surely kill them in other places – for this we testimonials by citizens whose dogs have been caught and who had gone the same day to look for their dogs.However, the dog-catcher have been telling them that their dogs had not been caught (despite the photographs of the dogs being caught) or that they have been adopted, of course, without giving them information about location!  

4. The latest strategy in the holding facility is that on every cage they put papers on which it is written that the dog is too aggressive – we claim that it is a disgusting lie in almost all cases, because they never want to say who concretely (including name, analysis and evaluation) has put the paper.Believe me, almost all dogs marked like this, even those who are so dear, peaceful, social, with randomly written label – ‘AGGRESSIVE’  to justify the killing, declared without any official document to show, official evaluation by competent person.  

 
    

  

    

 This is the main excuse for the death of almost 90% of caught dogs, dogs that we didn’t manage to save.
  

Despite all our reactions, calls, meetings with the authorities, organized protest (under the slogan No to Bloody Skopje), we fail to stop or change anything, we have never succeeded anything because obviously this is a fixed defined “strategy” for solving the problem of excessive dogs population.  

 There is no holding facility on the entire Macedonian territory, where the CNR program should performed! Instead, here rules the system of massive poisoning, dog tournaments, torture, murder with guns.  

Please help us in any way, please start to put pressure once and for all to put an end to the violent and extremely cruel principle – we will do everything for this to be stopped, everything that you think that could and should be done. We ask for your support because without assistance from abroad, the struggle for salvation and life of over 10 000 dogs in Skopje, and many more in other places in Macedonia, is lost in advance.

Say NO to extension of the hunting season in Italy

Since Silvio Berlusconi‘s (photo right) re-election as ItalianPrime Minister in 2008 his hunting-friendly government has attempted to emasculate the country’s hunting law on a number of occasions. To date three such initiatives have been stopped as the absurd draft proposals have led to a storm of protest and substantial resistance by politicians and the public. In summer 2009 we managed to stop new proposals by Senator Orsi. His draft law included an extension of the hunting season, hunting in nature reserves, more huntable species and hunting licences for 16 year olds.
As a ‘frontal assault’ by the Berlusconi administration is clearly doomed to failure, they are now turning to salami tactics. In December 2009, Senator Giacomo Santini from Berlusconi‘s PDL party has submitted a proposal for a new law which would lead to an enormous extension of the hunting season.

Present regulations permit hunting from the 3rd Sunday in September to the end of January – one of the shortest hunting seasons in Europe at present! The Santini proposal foresees permitting hunting of Turtle Dove and Quail from the beginning of August, and the shooting of Blackbirds and other song birds until the end of February.

The Italian nature and wildlife protection organisations are targeting three of Berlusconi’s ministers. They are all in key positions (EU Legislation, Environment and Deputy Prime Minister) and their actions could be decisive in determining the success or failure of the new proposals to make the law books.

Please help end the horrific treatment of dogs by sending protest emails to organizations that support the Iditarod.   Six dogs died in the 2009 race, including two dogs on Dr. Lou Packer’s team who froze to death in the brutally cold winds. What happens to the dogs during the Iditarod includes death, paralysis, frostbite (where it hurts the most!), bleeding ulcers, bloody diarrhea, lung damage, pneumonia, ruptured discs, viral diseases, broken bones, torn muscles and tendons and sprains. 

During training runs, Iditarod dogs have been killed by moose, snowmachines, and various motor vehicles, including a semi tractor and an ATV. They have died from drowning, heart attacks and being strangled in harnesses. Dogs have also been injured while training. They have been gashed, quilled by porcupines, bitten in dog fights, and had broken bones, and torn muscles and tendons. Most dog deaths and injuries during training aren’t even reported.

Dog beatings and whippings are common. During the 2007 Iditarod, eyewitnesses reported that musher Ramy Brooks kicked, punched and beat his dogs with a ski pole and a chain. Jim Welch says in his book Speed Mushing Manual, “A training device such as a whip is not cruel at all but is effective.” He also said, “It is a common training device in use among dog mushers…“

Iditarod dog kennels are puppy mills. Mushers breed large numbers of dogs and routinely kill unwanted ones, including puppies. Many dogs who are permanently disabled in the Iditarod, or who are unwanted for any reason, are killed with a shot to the head, dragged, drowned or clubbed to death.

Jon Saraceno wrote in his March 3, 2000 column in USA Today, “He [Colonel Tom Classen] confirmed dog beatings and far worse. Like starving dogs to maintain their most advantageous racing weight. Skinning them to make mittens. Or dragging them to their death.”

During the race, veterinarians do not give the dogs physical exams at every checkpoint. Mushers speed through many checkpoints, so the dogs get the briefest visual checks, if that. Instead of pulling sick dogs from the race, veterinarians frequently give them massive doses of antibiotics to keep them running.
