Dear Mark,

For thousands of cattle in Australia’s top end, today is a day worth celebrating. After eight days of intense campaigning and public pressure following exposure of the horrendous animal cruelty, the Gillard Government has announced a suspension on the live cattle trade to Indonesia.

I cannot express in words my relief to know that, at least for now, animals will be spared from what I witnessed during Animals Australia’s most recent live export investigation in Indonesia. This is a huge step towards an end to the cruelty inflicted on all animals in the live export trade — but our campaign is not over yet.

The graphic images of Australian cattle having their tails broken, tendons slashed, eyes gouged, whipped, and kicked will never be forgotten. Neither will the culpability of Meat and Livestock Australia, which was revealed to have known of the atrocities in Indonesia for more than a decade. Such was the loss in faith in Meat and Livestock Australia and the live export trade that national meat consumption was reported to have dropped by 10 — 15% in one week.

The massive public outcry following last week’s Four Corners exposé eclipsed the backlash of almost any other political issue in Australian history. Over 100,000 Animals Australia and RSPCA Australia supporters wrote to the Prime Minister at BanLiveExport.com and at the same time countless politicians were adding additional pressure on the Government to act by speaking out against the brutal trade — many for the first time.

The announcement of the suspension on the live cattle trade to Indonesia is a welcome step, however, the weight of evidence from Animals Australia’s eight investigations confirms that only a complete ban on live animal exports to all countries will ensure that these images are not repeated. Such a move would also send the strongest possible message to other countries that animals, and their welfare, matter. We will continue to campaign rigorously for millions more animals who are destined to be shipped to slaughter in countries where there are no laws to protect them from cruelty.

Our recently launched advertising campaign featuring television and radio ads is one powerful way that we are reminding Julia Gillard that caring Australians will accept nothing short of a total ban on all live animal exports. We are seeking urgent donations to keep this campaign on air for as long as possible.

On June 20th, historic private members bills to completely phase out the cruel live trade will be submitted to federal parliament by independents Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon and another by the Australian Greens. These bills represent the animals’ best chance for an end to a trade that has willingly sent millions of animals to a cruel fate for the past 30 years. Please click here to send an instant letter to your local MP and state senators to encourage them to pass this vital legislation.

Up against a powerful industry and a Government reluctant to act, this past week has shown that the power of caring individuals voicing their concern is nothing short of tremendous. We couldn’t have come this far without you.

On behalf of those animals still depending on our help, thank you sincerely for your continued support.

Investigator & Campaign Director

Prime Minister responds to community outrage

Dear Mark

Last week we asked you for help to get justice for Bill, a beautiful Australian steer that met a terrifying and gruesome end in an Indonesian slaughterhouse after being supplied to that country by our live export industry. Last night – with your help, justice was done.

The Prime Minister has answered the calls of hundreds of thousands of Australians and suspended all cattle exports to Indonesia.

Today, the Prime Minister has heard the voices of Bill, Brian, Arthur, Dudley, Tommy and the 6.4 million animals sent to Indonesia before them.

Following an unprecedented outcry by the Australian community, the Government has been forced to act following revelations of terrible cruelty to Australian cattle in slaughterhouses in Indonesia shown on ABC’s Four Corners. Over the past week, more than 100,000 people have written to the Prime Minister, 320,000 have signed a petition to halt the trade to Indonesia and tens of thousands of others have contacted their local members of Parliament and Senators and spoken out on social media and traditional media. It is already being described as a “win for people power”.

The real win is for Australian cattle, that because of the support of the community and the media, will no longer face a cruel and brutal death in Indonesian slaughterhouses.

The collaboration of RSPCA Australia with Animals Australia, with support from GetUp! and their members, together with a growing group of politicians who spoke up against this cruelty has delivered this great result

While we all certainly need to celebrate this success, our work is not done.

We will be looking closely at the terms of this suspension and work to close any loopholes. And we can’t forget that over 3 million sheep and around 135,000 cattle will go to the Middle East this year and most will also face inhumane handling and slaughter.

We will need the help of the community again to ensure the Gillard Government hears their voice and ends the live export trade once and for all.

Personally, we at SAV do not feel that this is solely and EU citizen issue.  We feel that the more videos sent from around the world, the more ‘global’ will be the message sent to Romanian politicians.  They need to be informed how the WORLD feels about their floundering for the strays.

Today’s result:
The law was sent back to Commissions after a long debate in the Deputies Chamber.
Toader PDL proposed that the votes be secret but V. Ponta PSD said that the Union will not vote if the vote is hidden, as every deputy has to take responsability for their vote. .
Huge thanks to all the supporters that stood up at the balconies in the Deputies Chamber and to those coming all over the country.

Dear All

Australia’s ABC1’s Four Corners exposé of the treatment of Australian
cattle exported live to Indonesia showed a damning picture of this trade.
Animals Australia and RSPCA Australia jointly launched a campaign to ban
live animal export.

The Four Corners exposé featured never-before seen footage from Animals
Australia’s recent investigation (with Tracks Investigations)into the live
cattle trade to Indonesia. It also included Four Corners’ own footage,
taken a month later in the same abattoirs and showing similar atrocities
as Animals Australia’s investigators had witnessed.

to help us end this trade.

Update:

Independents Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon have announced that they will
introduce legislation to both houses of Federal Parliament to ban live
exports.
Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig announced the suspension of live cattle
exports to the 11 Indonesian abattoirs investigated by ABC’s Four Corners.

Doco reveals Australian cattle tortured overseas

By Anne Worthington for Four Corners

Updated Mon May 30, 2011 4:29pm AEST

Animals Australia filmed in 11 randomly chosen abattoirs in Indonesia and provided the footage to Four Corners (ABC TV)

Horrific footage from inside Indonesian abattoirs that use Australian cattle has revealed abuse of the animals is widespread.

Footage to be aired on ABC1’s Four Corners tonight shows animals kicked, thrashed and beaten, their throats hacked at, eyes gouged and tails broken.

According to analysis of the footage by RSPCA chief scientist Bidda Jones, some animals show signs of possible consciousness when they are dismembered.

In March this year, animal welfare campaigners Animals Australia filmed in 11 randomly chosen abattoirs in Indonesia and provided the footage to Four Corners.

More than a month later, a Four Corners team went to Indonesia and filmed in abattoirs where cattle suffered prolonged and painful deaths.

Animals Australia spokeswoman Lyn White brought Egypt’s live export trade to a halt in 2006 after exposing animal cruelty in Cairo.

She says her suspicions were raised after the live export industry released a report in January describing animal welfare in Indonesia as generally good.

“We had assumed that because there were greater level of industry involvement in Indonesia, the treatment of the livestock would have been better,” she said.

“But we couldn’t have been more wrong.”

The abattoirs featured on Four Corners are well-known to the Australian industry, which has installed equipment and provided training in Indonesian abattoirs to help with the handling of Australian cattle since 2000.

The live export industry was shown the vision from four Indonesian abattoirs prior to an interview.

LiveCorp CEO Cameron Hall described the scenes as “graphic and disturbing”, and announced the suspension of the supply of Australian cattle to three of the four abattoirs.

The fourth abattoir, Gondrong in Jakarta, was the scene of sustained suffering by Australian animals.

When asked why Gondrong is continuing to process Australian cattle, Mr Hall says training can address the issues.

A statement released by industry last week said: “A team of Australian cattle experts will fly to Indonesia this weekend to deliver this training to priority facilities, including this facility.”

But Four Corners has revealed the facility has already been visited six times by industry representatives in the past 14 months.

There are 100 abattoirs in Indonesia that slaughter Australian animals. Since the trade began 20 years ago, more than 6.5 million cattle have been shipped to Indonesia for slaughter.

Big bucks and metal boxes

Indonesia isAustralia’s key market for live cattle exports, taking 60 per cent of all cattle, and in 2010, the trade was worth more than $300 million.

The Australian livestock export industry and the Australian Government have invested more than $4 million into improving animal welfare in Indonesia over the past 10 years.

The majority of funding has been invested into Australian-designed metal restraining boxes.

The RSPCA says the boxes are inadequate and stunning the animal prior to slaughter is the only humane option.

There are currently only six Indonesian abattoirs that use stunning.

Last week the industry launched its welfare action plan, which included providing stunning equipment to five additional abattoirs by the end of this year.

The new plan also says from 2015, Australian livestock will only be supplied to facilities who meet the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) standards.

But Indonesia is already a signatory to the OIE.

Animals Australia spokeswoman Glenys Oogjes says Australia has no power to make Indonesia comply with these guidelines.

“The OIE guidelines are minimal standards for developing countries that allow practices that are illegal in Australia to take place,” she said.

Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig said in budget estimates last week that he had been concerned about the live animal trade for some time and criticised the industry for being too slow in addressing welfare concerns.

But in April, during a speech to the Northern Territory Cattleman’s Association in Darwin, he reiterated the Australian Government’s continued support of the live export trade.

“The live animal export sector is the backbone of many rural and regional communities across Australia, including northern Australia, as it provides a valuable market option for producers,” he said.

Watch the full report on Four Corners tonight at 8.30pm on ABC1.

Dear Team,

On Thursday 26th May we plan to hold a protest in London close to the
Romanian Embassy and also walk along to the Romanian Consulate Office both
of which are in Kensington.

The website put together quickly specifically for this event is below.

Primarily we are protesting about the proposed law change in Romania which
would see the systematic and on-going slaughter of street/shelter dogs in
the most barbaric fashion but generally we will be protesting about the
long-standing lack of even basic animal welfare practices within the
country.

http://afra.moonfruit.com/

If you could share the news of this protest amongst your UK supporters and
join us on the day we would be extremely grateful.  We have informed the
police and they have worked with us on a meeting place, a route etc.  We
have also been granted permission to deliver by hand any petitions
directly to the Embassy.  We need people to stand with us on the day to
send a message LOUD AND CLEAR to those in power within this country that
they must take their legal responsibilities seriously regarding animal
protection now that they are part of the EU.

Warmest regards
Chrissy Phillips
