VERY URGENT ACTION REQUIRED TO STOP ELEPHANT CALVES BEING SENT TO HELL HOLE ZOOS IN CHINA – Please Act Immediately To Prevent This.

Animals Asia Elephants

We have just had the following URGENT ACTION request from our friends at Animals Asia.

Take a look at the disgusting conditions in which this animal is being kept.  Do you want another six elephant calves torn from their families in the wild to end up suffering like this purely as a simple ‘attraction’ at a Chinese zoo ?

– If not, then please contact the Zimbabwe authorities to protest about them possibly allowing this by using the e mail links given below.

Time is very short – there are just a few days left at most –

***PLEASE ACT NOW AND SEND YOUR COMPLAINT****

Thank You – SAV.

——————————————————————————————-

We need your help urgently. Within the next few days the Zimbabwe authorities will decide whether to transport four to six elephant calves, captured from the wild and removed from their families, to zoos in China.

One of four Zimbabwe calves sent to Chinese zoos in November 2012 has already died due to the stress of capture, transport and captivity.

The standard of animal care at Chinese zoos remains far from satisfactory with facilities unable to provide for the needs of these baby elephants.

These animals were born in the wild and they belong in the wild.

Please urgently email the Zimbabwe environment minister, and the national parks authority using the contact emails below.

Please politely request that the elephant calves are not sent to China and the authorities work with conservation organisations in Zimbabwe to rehabilitate these orphan calves back into the wild.

SAMPLE LETTER TO SEND

Dear:

Minister Nhema, Mr Edson Chidziya, Mr George Pangeti and Dr Hilary Madzikanda

I am writing to express my deep concern about the transfer of wild-caught elephant calves from Zimbabwe to Chinese zoos.

Elephant calves have a very close bond with their mothers and with their female relatives. The removal of calves from their herds in the wild into captivity is devastating. The young elephants suffer severe, unrelenting stress, which affects their physical and psychological development. Many calves die.

The standard of animal care at Chinese zoos remains far from satisfactory, with facilities unable to provide for the behavioral and physiological needs of these animals. Following the transfer of four calves in November 2012, one has already died at Taiyuan Zoo. The others are likely to become ill soon.

It is my understanding that more wild-caught elephant calves are awaiting transportation to China. I respectfully appeal to you to stop the transfer and to work with Zimbabwean conservation organisations to rehabilitate these calves back into the wild.

The decision will be made in the next few days, therefore please send your email as soon as possible and please ask your friends and family to do the same.

Help us show the authorities that the world will not tolerate such gross exploitation of wild animals.

Thank you,

Germany: Zookeeper Killed by Tiger; Which is Shot and Killed by Zoo Director. 500 Tigers Remain Globally in the Wild, But 7,021,836,029 Humans On the Planet. What Will They Shoot Once Tigers Are Extinct ?

What will they shoot and kill when all the endangered animals have been ‘removed’ from the planet by the human species ?

– other humans ?

German zookeeper killed by tiger at Cologne zoo

Police and zoo officials have confirmed that a 43-year-old female zookeeper has been killed by a tiger at Cologne zoo.
5:41PM BST 25 Aug 2012

The attack happened around 10.00am (GMT). The tiger, named Altai was four-years-old and was moved to Cologne Zoo in April last year.

The zookeeper, who has not yet been named was mauled and bitten and later died of her wounds in hospital.
Theo Pagel, zoo director, told reporters,”today is surely the most terrible day in my career”.

He went on to describe how he wasn’t present when the incident took place but did shoot and kill the animal on arrival.

He said an investigation into what happened was underway and it appeared that “the keeper made a mistake“.

It is believed that the woman was cornered by the animal after it found its way through a gate that had not been properly shut.

Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest and best-known in the country and is home to some 10,000 animals from 700 species.

Food for thought:

Amur Tiger: included on CITES Appendix I, global population in the wild is estimated to number 500, while 421 cats are kept in captivity; or maybe 420 now. ( also see – BBC, “Amur tigers on ‘genetic brink’ )

In comparison: mankind, not included on any CITES list of endangered species,  global population is estimated to number 7,021,836,029 mid-year 2011.

Magnificent animal? Their only utilities, of those lazy and coward beasts is to make lovely carpets (I prefer those made from white tiger skins) and to be stuffed to be shown in museuns. Future (I hope it will be very son) kids will know that those stinking “Magnificent Animal” have been eliminated by man, the Lord of Earth

The simple fact to watch the photo of that beautiful (some say it) and huge animal makes me sick. I hate every time more the people who insist to protect and keep alive those specimens all around the worls. Theuy are cruel beats, coward creatures, they are simply dangerous, useless, lazy, they live their senseless existences only to hunt, chase smaller animals, kill them, eat them and sleep more than 18 hours a day. The Zoo administration should be charged with a penalty because they didn’t kill the beast two or theee years ago...

I think you’ll find there are no tigers in Africa. They’re indigenous to India and the Far East; but you’re correct, they are very highly feared. But, if you would like to see them become extinct, you’re fast getting your wish. Poaching, loss of habitat and illegal hunting has left a comparatively small number of tigers in the world today. Soon the only tigers left will be the ones in zoos.

I hope it happens as soon as possible, a worls withou those coward beasts…

Yes, you are right, let’s release all the tigers that are today in captivity aroud the world, take all of them to Suberia anda than… shot to death all those coward beasts. I give my approval…

‘Netto’ or ‘Nutto’ ??

Lets hope he never produces children !!

We are now able to provide many more photographs regarding the August 2012 expose by campaigners who visited the zoo.

As said before, the beautiful flowers and gardens give the visitors to Palic Zoo the impression that everything here is wonderful for the animals.

We understand that the Brown Bear, the Chimps and two Canadian Wolves are the animals suffering the most.  Depression due to a lack of any stimulation to make their lives worthwhile.

Here are a selection of photographs taken during the August investigation.

The beautiful flowers and gardens give the visitors to Palic Zoo the impression that everything here is wonderful for the animals.

The August 2012 expose by campaigners who visited the zoo shows a very different picture.

The Brown Bear is in massive depression – having simply existed in this shack of a cage facility for some 30 years.

This is the reality of Serbian zoos in 2012;  an attraction for human visitors to ‘enjoy’ the animals; but endless days of nothing to enjoy; just boredom in terrible conditions for the animals who exist there.

Here are a few pictures of the Brown Bear which has suffered boredom and confinement in its small enclosure for over 30 years.

In another post to be published very soon, we will be showing more photographs of other animals which are existing but not really ‘living’ at Palic Zoo, Serbia.

Visit us again soon to see more !

Libya: Finally Some Help for Tripoli Zoo Animals.

Thank you Austria!

Fate of Animals in the Tripoli Zoo:

As the National Transitional Council struggles to establish its legitimacy and, indeed, to get the government in Libya running, some residents of Tripoli who have been suffering for days are finally getting some relief.

CNN reports that a team of animal-welfare experts from Austria’s Four Paws International has arrived in the Tripoli Zoo to tend to the animals who — unlike human residents of Tripoli — had no choice but to remain where they were as missiles were fired and Kalashnikovs shot bullets into the mammal house.

Fifteen members of the zoo staff braved the fighting to feed and water the animals every day; without this care, they would have died after three or four days.

However, with running water only recently restored to Tripoli, the hippos were in poor shape; they could only drink the water left in their pool, but were unable to swim. They have survived and now have sufficient water.

But a Siberian tiger, Osama, has died. A doctor from Vienna, Dr. Amir Khalil, who rushed to Tripoli to help the animals after seeing a TV report, says Osama died due to his age (the tiger is possibly 21 years old) and also the stress he endured.

The Tripoli Zoo opened in 1986 and was undergoing a major reconstruction when the war broke out. The South Korean construction company that was working on the project left due to security concerns. The zoo’s director, Dr. Abdulfatah Husni, says the NTC has pledged support to the zoo and that he hopes there will be exchanges with zoos around the world and the arrival of new animals who have not been traumatized by the violence of the war.

Serbia: 27/07/11 – Investigations Reveal An Illegal Zoo Confirmed Operating, Combined With A Minister Who Appears Unable To Perform His Job Requirements !

Obviously our main concern is now the current welfare and long term future of the animals which are currently existing at Novi Pazar.  It is very early days into a positive result, but we will endevour with our Serbian welfare friends to ensure that good, permanent and much better quality homes are found for all the current animals at this ILLEGAL hell hole zoo.  – SAV

Very Important Update – Wednesday 27/07/11

‘VUK’ Zoo facility; Novi Pazar, Serbia.

Regarding the combined efforts of animal welfare organisations to expose the horrendous conditions at ‘VUK’ zoo facility in Novi Pazar, Southern Serbia, we have now been given a fantastic update by ‘Help Animals’, Belgrade.

http://www.helpanimals.org.rs/index.php/action/index/eng/19/Home

We now have official confirmation from the Ministry of Environment, Mining and Spatial Planning that they undertook an inspection of the facility on 5th of July 2011, and that it was found that the owner of zoo park, one Mr. Ismail Redzepovic, from Novi Pazar, does not possess any documentation in relation to this facility being operated / kept as a zoo park.

Official letters are as follows:

zoo vrt-vuk,odg.str

Further, he (Mr. Ismail Redzepovic) does not even possess any form of licence for any kind of economic activity at this facility.

We are informed that he “just has something like a kind of agreement with Belgrade zoo park, from where it appears that allegedly, he was supplied with the animals he has.”  It is also alleged that some of the animals were given “as a gift”.

There are many issues that concern us greatly with regard this zoo park situation; the main ones being the complete ignorance of the Serbian government Ministry (Ministry of Environment, Mining and Spatial Planning) that they have any idea what is happening.  Once again, it comes down to animal welfare organisations exposing the situation ‘in the field / reality’, while government ministers appear to simply sit back, turning a blind eye to what is actually happening, whilst at the same time directing people to useless government zoo animal welfare regulations which simply exist as words on a sheet of paper !

Remember the words which inform us how tight the zoo regulations are !

This whole situation at Novi Pazar shows that the whole system is out of control, and that government ministers who are in a position to oversee what happens and strictly enforce the animal welfare regulations, are simply turning a blind eye to their official responsibilities.

We ask the following questions of the minister:

  • Why were you completely unaware of the illegal operation of the Novi Pazar zoo park facility ?
  • Why were you completely unaware that (wild) animals were being traded between Belgrade zoo park and Novi Pazar zoo park facility ?
  • Why were you as the Minister not aware of live animals being transported on civil roads between these two facilities ?
  • What would have been your response should animals have escaped from vehicles during transportation that you appear to not have been aware of ?
  • Without any official documentation (licenses) to support animals being shipped between facilities (Belgrade and Novi Pazar); is there not a bio-security risk across the country ? – the potential for animal diseases to be spread by possible carrier animals in transport between Belgrade and Novi Pazar ?
  • What checks are now going to be undertaken regarding animal record documentation at Belgrade zoo park ?
  • In accordance with the “Official Document on the Law for Animal Welfare Serbia” – Section 14 – Protection of Animal welfare in Zoo’s –

Clause 71:

Why were you as the Minister, not aware of:

The proprietor of zoological park or a mini park, sanctuary or a nursery/ breeding facility for wild animals has an obligation to provide”:

  • Keeping official record of every individual animal, as well as a record of all sold or exchanged animals, or animals that are given to third parties as a gift ?
  • Financial means that are necessary for continuous work of the zoo

Clause 72 states.  Person responsible for the protection of animal welfare in zoological park, sanctuary or breeding facility for wild animals must have completed studies on academic level with title – diploma – master in veterinary science (doctor for veterinary medicine ) or biological science (diploma zoologist /biologist – master)  or completed basic studies in the length of minimum of 5 years in the field of veterinary science or minimum of 4 years in the field of biological science.

  • So what academic studies in animal welfare and zoo keeping were undertaken by Mr. Ismail Redzepovic ?
  • Is he (Mr. Ismail Redzepovic) qualified with a diploma ? – is he a master in veterinary science (doctor for veterinary medicine) ? or has he specialised in biological science (diploma zoologist /biologist – master) ?
  • Did Mr. Ismail Redzepovic complete basic studies for a minimum of 5 years in veterinary science ? – or did he undertake a minimum of 4 years in the field of biological science ?
  • What has been his ‘training in the welfare field’ ?
  • What training did the Minister, in collaboration with and approvals of acting as Minister for the environmental protection, provide as the program for training of the persons that are going to provide animal welfare from clause 2 of this section ? – what did the minister do regarding Novi Pazac zoo ?

Clause 73.

Movement of wild animals that are under the special regime of animal protection in conjunction with local and international regulations can be carried out only in-between zoological parks, sanctuaries and breeding facilities with approval by minister and acting minister for the environmental protection”.

  • Why, as minister, were you completely unaware that wild animals had been moved between Belgrade and Novi Pazar zoo parks ?
  • The movement and trading of animals is only allowed to be approved by the Minister – so why such a massive failure here ? – could it be that the minister does not care as long as he has words and paper legislation attempting to show that regulations exist ?

This expose is a massive embarrassment for the government and the ministers, showing simply that they have no control over what is happening.  Animals are suffering hugely as a result.  Paper documentation and ‘Weasel Word’ government legislation for the alleged protection of animals in zoos is supposed to exist in the form of “Official Document on the Law for Animal Welfare Serbia” – Section 14 – Protection of Animal welfare in Zoo’s.  What a joke this legislation is; legislation which means nothing being overseen by people who do nothing – government ministers.

They should all be ashamed of themselves.

This information is being passed to the EU Legal Affairs section, Brussels, as further evidence why Serbian ministers need to get their act together regarding the enforcement of Serbian animal welfare legislation before Serbia is allowed EU accession.

Our thanks go out to all our supporters who have sent messages relating to this issue so far.  This is not the end; probably just the beginning !
