And now Slavica:

This is ‘Bundas’ who was left at the shelter.

Bundas was dumped by his owner who did not want him any more.  Bundas is a very kind and sweet dog who was very sad when his owner was gone, despite what his owner had done by dumping him.

Bundas is very welcome to EPAR shelter, we love him very much.

This is ‘Aki’, a very kind and sweet female, and her new owner.  They will live in Subotica.  We will  visit them  after 3-6 months to ensure that everything is going ok.  The lady (new owner) has signed a contract to say that she will provide care for Aki.

Pictures of Agnes on arrival at EPAR Shelter

Agnes arrived at the EPAR shelter from Belgrade, where he had lived on the streets.  Agnes was named after the lady (Mrs. Strugar) who with her husband Llija, gave care to as many street dogs as possible.

Mrs. Strugar asked EPAR if they could take two dogs which they were caring for, Agnes being one, and the other dog who is not named, is so very scared that he spends most of his time currently at the EPAr shelter in his wooden house.  It is not possible to show a photo at the moment of this dog, as he eats and drinks in his little wooden house, and because he was beaten with a shovel whilst living on the streets of Belgrade, naturally he is very scared of people and what could happen to him.

Mrs. Strugar has been described as an Angel in Belgrade, as she rescues as many little puppies as she can find from the garbage containers on the streets when people have just dumped their dogs into them.  For several weeks at the start of their ‘meeting’, Mrs. Strugar started to give some food to both agnes and the other dog now at EPAR shelter, building up their confidence in people.  Once this had been done, Mrs. Strugar was able to help Agnes and the other dog by asking if it was possible for the animals to be taken in by EPAR shelter.  This was agreed on and they were both moved to the shelter.

The EPAR vet provided Agnes with essential vitamins for his coat, and he was given a complete wash to help any skin problems he was having. He now has a big, warm coat to keep him cosy in the winter months.   The other dog, who has now been named ‘Llja’, is also healthy and being cared for, but he is still very wary of people.  He will gradually improve with all the care and love he is getting at EPAR shelter.

Agnes and Llja are now being cared for very much at the EPAR shelter, they have a home to live in, have had medical treatment, and are getting to learn that not all humans want to hurt and kill them.  Some humans want to help and protect them.

Belgrade is a very dangerous place for all street animals, Agnes and Llja were two lucky dogs who were helped by good people in belgrade, and who brought them all the way to EPAR shelter, Subotica, using their own transport.

Belgrade is a city with many shinters out on the streets looking for animals to capture and kill.  The introduction of a No Kill Sterilisation, vaccination and Microchipping / Identification management programme would ensure that street animals in Belgrade do not have the opportunity to meet with dogs owned by careless owners who turn their own dogs onto the street each day and most importantly, to reproduce and make yet more and more stray dogs which have to be caught and killed by the shinters.

Everyone apart from Senior Serbian Veterinary persons and all those in Serbian Government can see that No Kill Sterilisation is the only sensible way forward to reduce street and stray animal numbers.  So it has to be asked why they in government are still so ignorant and dismissive of the only sensible solution to stray animal management.  We would like them to explain to us why they are so many years behind animal welfare NGO’s on the issue of stray animal control management.

Serbia: ‘Api’s’ Story – The Little Dog Who Was Dumped at the EPAR Shelter Pregnant and in a Coma

api-21

The following SAV link shows latest news and pictures from the EPAR No Kill shelter, Subotica, Serbia – EPAR is part of the ‘Serbian Animal Voice’ alliance of animal welfare organisations.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/12/04/serbia-new-pictures-and-news-from-epar-shelter-subotica/

Well here we can give you the story of Api and how she arrived at the shelter, and the things that happened thereafter.  Api is now looking for a new loving home where she can enjoy the rest of her life.

This is Api’s Story:

Note:  although we use the name ‘Api’ throughout this story, little Api was not given her name until she recovered from her illness.  We refer to her as ‘Api’ throughout for convenience.

This is the story of ‘Api’, a little female dog who currently lives at the EPAR shelter, Subotica, Serbia.  Early one morning earlier this year, a cardboard box was left outside of the EPAR shelter by persons unknown; this box contained little Api, who although it was not known at the time, was a very sick and ill little dog.

On looking into the box left at the gates, it was immediately seen by shelter workers that Api was unconscious, as there were no signs of life from her and no attempt made by her to get up or even move within the box.   A vet was called by the shelter and he came along immediately to see Api.  His diagnosis was that Api had gone into some form of a coma, the type and origin of which was not known, that she was also pregnant, and that the arrival of the puppies was imminent.

Because of the coma she was in and the chance of causing her an untimely death, the vet declared that Api should not be given any anaestheitc, nor should the pups be delivered by caesarian.   A conservative approach of allowing a purely natural birth was decided on, but an approach for which the outcome was unknown for both the mother and the puppies.

Everyone involved was very concerned about what was going to happen; but to everyones amazement, and despite still being in a coma, Api’s body reacted to the need of her babies and she started to give a natural birth to eight beautiful little puppies.  Due to her coma, Api was still unable to produce milk for the puppies; which is an essential requirement for the youngsters during the first few hours of their lives.

But for many hours things did not improve.  It was heartbreaking for all the shelter staff to witness the deaths of each of the puppies during the next few days, despite all the staffs special efforts to provide food and warmth, love and care to the little dogs; simply to keep them alive.  Despite the deaths of her babies, the shelter still had Api who was clinging on to life.

Over the next two weeks, Api was carefully monitored by the shelter staff, and then, suddenly, one day, Api showed signs that she was coming out of her coma !

At this time, the name Api had not been given to this sweet little dog – she was still simply known as the beautiful little ill one.  Now the survivor could be named – she would be called ‘Api’.

Api gradually became aware of her surroundings, aware of the people who were with her and caring for her during her recovery, and then she decided to have something good to eat, to have a drink of water and to stand up and walk around a little.

Now everyone at the shelter could see that Api had pulled out of her coma and that for the first time, there was real hope amongst everyone that little Api was going to survive her ordeal.

During the time that Api was very ill in her coma and fighting for every minute of her life, an evil man managed at one time to get into the shelter and record all of Api’s suffering and pain during her illness using his mobile phone camera. This man decided to put the footage he had taken of Api’s suffering on a ‘Youtube’ video link, and trying at the same time to imply that the shelter did not care for their animals and that the suffering and agony of Api was typical of what was always happening.

This footage on Youtube was produced with the intention of deceipt and misinformation about conditions and treatment of all animals at EPAR shelter.  It has not worked, as with love and care and proper veterinary attention when it was immediately required, little Api, who had by then been given her name by the shelter staff, was fully recovered from her ordeal.

Api has repaid all the shelter staff for saving her life, by giving them love, attention and kindness.  Api has decided to move into one of the shelter dog houses with another little female dog named ‘Fibi’ and with two males named ‘Bobi’ and ‘Gile’.

Now, as you can see from the photographs, Api looks like this – a beautiful healthy and strong little dog.  So very different from the day when the uncinscious little bundle was left dumped in a box at the front door of the shelter and when a sick man decided to try and pretend that all dogs at EPAR shelter were uncared for and left to suffer.

Api has beaten her coma, has survived her fight for life and is proof that the EPAR shelter loves and cares for all animals they take in, whatever their initial situation.  The EPAR shelter team are now ready to try and find a loving permanent home for Api where she can continue to give her new onwners lots of love, attention and very happy times.

Can you be the home that takes little Api ?

If you would like to offer Api a permanent home, or simply to give a donation to the EPAR shelter to help provide care and veterinary attention to animals in need, then please contact the team at EPAR shelter in the following way:-

E mail : epar@yunord.net

Web Site: www.epar.org.rs.

With love and thanks from a very greatful Api and all the wonderful team at EPAR who battled to keep this little dog alive; we hope to hear from you very soon about Api.

Sponsored by:  Susanne Max, Prague, nokilling.nu-masters.net

ENG: A dutch investor is planning to reactivate a former communistic factory farm for up to 67 000 pigs without daylight, fresh air nor straw in Hassleben, East-Germany. We ask the Federal State Environmental office of Brandenburg to reject Mr van Gennip’s application for such gigantic “farm” does not comply with European directives for the protection of pigs and it is against the dignity of animals. We appeal to your ethical and judicial judgment: Save the life of thousands of pigs. Do not suffer animals in such inhumane industrial conditions which also have an negative ecological impact to the environment due to well known pollution of factory farming.

*** DESPERATE NEWS:
WE HAVE A CHANCE TO MOVE OUR TWO LAST LIONS ***

Romany and Gypsy, five-year-old male and female disabled lions, have
lived in the confines of Buhusi Zoo for most of their lives. We have
been offered the chance to move them to a sanctuary in Holland.

They must be moved before December 31 or they will be euthanized.
Euthanization in Romania is brutal.

In the last month and half with increased medicine, more care, and
better food, we have watched these two loving creatures improve.

They are not without some pain, but they are vastly capable of living a
good life. They are, we feel, a symbol of love and kindness. We would
like to see them have a better chance. And we want to let children
know that they are worth saving. Having a disability is not a cause of
hiding them or killing them.

We need to raise 6000 euro for their medical care and transport.
donations can be made through out website www.thelionsroar. eu (a
European link will soon be posted to allow donations in euros)

THE INCREASINGLY SAD STORY OF TWO REMAINING DINGOES

A male and female dingo living together in one cage will be moved to
Ploisti Zoo in Romania on Dec. 15th. We NEED to find homes for the two
remaing dingoes. One female lives in the adjoining cage and another
female, who was badly wounded (and now recovered),lives in another
awful concrete cage on the other side of the nearly empty zoo. They
need seperate enclosures.

We want to raise $2000 US (in addition to what we have raised) to
encourage a zoo to take them with our building them proper enclosures.
they too must be moved by December 31 or face a horrible death.

CHRISTIAN THE LION

Honorable Officials of the Republic of Korea:This draft law undoes humane policies established in 1991. In fact, it allows any animal abuser to bypass punishment by simply claiming the abused dog or cat was intended for meat or medicine. Thailand and the Philippines have banned dog meat. Most Koreans do not consume dogs and cats. Why does Korea continue to sacrifice its integrity and global image to appease a minority interest?

THE HYPOCRISY OF SAVING DOGS WHILE EATING PIGS?
============ ========= ========= ========= =========

Kinship Circle recognizes that some feel it’s hypocritical to protest the consumptive use of dogs and cats while other sentient creatures live in wretched conditions and die horribly under the knife.

============ ========= ========= ========= =========

I respectfully ask the Korean government to not amend the Animal Protection Law of 1991 to classify some dog breeds as livestock and others as companions.

The distinction between “pet animals” and food-source animals merely allows the consumptive use of certain dogs and cats. Those bred as family companions are protected, while other dogs and cats — if purposefully raised for food or medicine — are not.

This law turns a blind eye on the cruelty inherent in the dog/cat consumption trade: Prolonged beatings, dismemberment, hangings, live boiling, and more brutal “customs” thought to enhance flavor and potency.

Moreover, if Korea enacts this amendment, it becomes the only nation to openly permit the slaughter of dogs and cats for human ingestion. I urge Korean officials to cease all efforts to legalize this vile trade. Taiwan,

Please enforce animal protection laws that afford ALL dogs and cats immunity under “pet animals.” Please explicitly outlaw the killing of any of these animals for food or medicine.

Thank you,

For Jonah: A Narration from Maria

jonah

Dear all,

I had to do something for Jonah so I’ve written some words for him and narrated them on the link below. I hope this message reaches those in Turkey who denied this sweet dog a second chance. Feel free to share with friends of animals.

Love from Maria xx

http://www.maria-daines.com/music-78.html

 Jonah

A short tragic life lived in pain

Not pain that leads to something better

To recovery, or a quiet peaceful home

Safe with those you know

Where you are wanted for your happy presence

Treasured for your soft ears

And trusting eyes

Welcomed for your gentle spirit

Called upon when you stray too far

Missed when you are out of sight

Or a little too far from loving arms

Arms that would have cradled you

As you slept, dreaming of love…

Now, dear Jonah, you slumber safe

In the eternal shelter of a million caring hearts

For not all human beings are cruel

The ones who let you down

The callous brutes who could not see

How much you mattered

Those that trespassed through your right to life

Those that dragged barriers across your final hope

Drawing curtains of ignorance around your sorrow

So your suffering might be alone

They, and only they, each and every one that stole your escape

Keeping you far from rescue

They may waken each morning

With the knowledge that they matter least.

For their aging broken souls carry boulders of emptiness

Their shallow agenda will weaken and be rendered useless

Their eyes shall dim with cowardice

And their hollow, worthless shame

Shall become a prison for their lack of dignity.

Yet you, dear creature of another world

Resting soundly now, your body healed of ache and pain

Renewed and repaired, you are at one with the Rainbow

Aloof from this planet where a species of savages roams

You shall be remembered always, far from this dumb world

You will shine brightly as a butterfly in moonlight

You are amongst the friends who gathered you to their hearts

Friends who tried to pull you closer through an unfathomable distance

Friends who wished you an almighty strength

To fight an interminable struggle of indifference

They will never know the power, Jonah

Or the pleasure of man’s beautiful best friend

A friend who would be devoted to their very being

Loyal and enchanting, a comrade in compassionate war

The antidote to human angst and a miracle beyond all reason

Each heart encased in fur shall live amongst the brave forever more.

Those who let you down

And those who were not content with living their own wretched life

Those who blocked your path to recovery simply because they could

Those so ignorant that they possess nothing of any value

Their empathy is shipwrecked somewhere in a shrunken sea

They are already forgotten…

Whilst you remain a rock of hope and a beacon of our need

A symbol of all that we may overcome

You were not ruined, they could not break you

For you are what they can never be.

You live inside those that care for life

You belong to everyone that ever cared.

And through your suffering this night shall never end

For wherever the voiceless guardians unite

Wherever they stand tall and turn against the cruelty

Wherever a plea is heard

There will be no silence. No apathy

No challenge worthy if not borne of love

Your life and death will never be over.

Your brief moment in this bleak space and time

Will not be in vain.

You are our memory

We promise.

Please watch some or all of the following footage and then you will understand why we have complete trust, faith, belief and support in Paul and all the Sea Shepherd crew.

One day in the future, if there are no more whales in the oceans, due to extinction by the hunters, kids of the time will ask their parents why they did little or nothing to stop the slaughter and why they in effect allowed the mass extermination of these beautiful innocents of the oceans.

Sea Shepherd are fighting to ensure that the day never comes and that the whale killers are put where they belong – in the history books.  Please give them your full support.

Safe sailing all you guys on ‘Operation Musashi’ – KICK THE WHALE HUNTER BUTT and kick it long and hard !!!

In memory of Robert Hunter – a Direct Action Hero.

Paul Watson says:

In March of 1976, he and I stood on the heaving ice floes off the coast of Labrador as a large sealing ship bore down on us.

The ice cracked and split beneath our feet as I said to Bob, “When it splits, I’ll jump to the right and you to the left.”

Bob looked straight ahead and calmly said, “I’m not going anywhere.”

And he meant it. And because he stayed, I stayed, we brought that seal killing ship to a dead stop.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin departed the Port of Brisbane today with an international volunteer crew of 48.

The crew includes 33 men and 15 women. 14 of the crew are from Australia and 4 from New Zealand with the rest of the crew hailing from Japan, Canada, Great Britain, the USA, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Hungary, and Bermuda. 8 of the crew are representing Animal Planet for the documenting of the 2nd season of the series Whale Wars. The other 40 crewmembers make up the crew for Operation Musashi. 23 of the crew are returning veterans and for the remaining 25, this is their first time on a Sea Shepherd campaign.

Included in the crew that departed from Brisbane is Daryl Hanna, a longtime dedicated environmental activist and actor whose films include Blade Runner, Kill Bill, Roxanne and Splash.

The Steve Irwin will make a brief stop for fuel before proceeding to the Ross Sea to intercept the Japanese whaling fleet.

The Japanese whaling fleet is targeting 935 threatened Piked whales plus 50 endangered Fin whales in an established Whale Sanctuary in violation of a global moratorium on commercial whaling.

“Our objective is to sink the Japanese whaling fleet – economically.” Said Captain Paul Watson.

Sea Shepherd has given the name of Operation Musashi to this year’s campaign in reference to the legendary samurai ronin and master strategist Miyomoto Musashi who is to Japan what Ned Kelly, Robin Hood and Jesse James are to Australia, England and the United States.

Musashi wrote of the “two-fold way of pen and sword” and that means that confrontation plus communication is the strategy to be followed this year. Sea Shepherd will physically block the Japanese harpoons and we will be producing a dramatic television series to communicate the problem and our solution to the world.

All Sea Shepherd tactics are designed not cause bodily injury. Last year, the whalers accused Sea Shepherd crew of throwing “acid” on them. While technically rotten butter is butyric acid, it is less acidic than beer or orange juice. But it does stink very bad and thus interferes with their work.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society expects the Japanese to be more aggressive this year. They are losing money and their image as whale butchers is becoming a growing embarrassment. Last year the whalers threw concussion grenades and fired live shots at the crew of the Steve Irwin. We expect they will be more hostile facing another year of losses.
The Sea Shepherd crew are also concerned over Greenpeace allegations that Sea Shepherd is a violent organization. “This kind of irresponsible rhetoric could get us killed,” said Steve Irwin 2nd Officer Peter Hammarstedt of Sweden. “If Greenpeace continue to make these unsubstantiated accusations, it could serve to justify violence by the whalers against us. We would like to request that they cease and desist from making remarks that may possibly endanger our lives.”

The whales do not have time to wait until awareness is changed in Japan. The killing must be ended now and the key to success is to interfere with profits. Sea Shepherd intends to make sure that the financial losses of the Japanese fleet exceed their profits. This is the only language that the whalers understand.

Captain Paul Watson expects to intercept the Japanese whaling fleet in the Ross Sea area around sometime during the last 10 days of December.

“Hopefully we will arrive in time to give the gift of life to the whales this Christmas and hopefully we will see 2009 as the last year that these outlaw whalers continue to slaughter these intelligent, defenseless and gentle sentient creatures.”

Commentary from Anthony Marr

Everyone knows that this voyage is dangerous, perhaps, after last year’s shooting, more so than ever before. Therefore, all on the Steve Irwin are heroes knowingly sailing into harm’s way for the good of those who cannot even say thanks in a way we can understand.
Being the pragmatist that I am, I would now suggest forming a contingency plan that can be swung into action immediately and with full force in the event that Japanese violence results in injury or, the Whale God forbids, death, on the part of Sea Shepherd. I wouldn’t say so had the Captain himself not been hit by a Japanese bullet, and indeed could have been killed had he not been wearing a kevlar vest. Since the Japanese sniper was probably not aware of our Captain wearing a vest, and the bullet did impact on his chest, this act was one of attempted murder.
Such a contingency plan should aim for using such an incident to deal an immediate fatal blow not only to the Japanese whaling industry, but to the reputation and the soul of Japan. Forming such a contingency plan can safeguard us from knee-jerk reactions and falling into a state of disarray. And the existence of the plan should remind Japan and its whalers that any such murderous act will be an act of industrial and spiritual suicide on their part.

This in a sense is a sad statement, because their firing a bullet at a Sea Shepherd member is morally no better and no worse than their firing a harpoon into the defenseless body of a whale, or cutting the throat of a helpless dolphin.

May the Earth Force be with you!

Anthony
